GROOMS Announce Sophomore LP On Kanine Records

On PromGrooms' sophomore album, set to be released on Kanine Records this summer, the Brooklyn avant-rock trio has come into their own.  In every way, Prom is a more mature, unique, adventurous, and most of all, accessible record than 2009's widely-praised album Rejoicer.
Travis Johnson (vocals/guitar) and Emily Ambruso (vocals/bass) met, ridiculously, on Friendster, shortly before that website became 100% irrelevant, only to meet in person at a Valentine's Day party in the Oklahoma woods a few weeks later.  They immediately started discussing experimental music and pop, and, after relocating separately to New York in 2004, starting playing experimental music and pop together in their bedrooms.  They met Jim Sykes (drums) through a friend soon after, but didn't start playing with him until 2009, when Grooms formed and released their debut album.  That album was a dark, noisy, and tangled affair, the lyrics focusing almost entirely on Travis' religion-fixated obsessive-compulsive disorder, which he was diagnosed with in adolescence.
On this gorgeously poppy album, Prom, the experiments are with beauty, texture, and melody, and the OCD-related lyrics are nestled in lulling, comforting sounds.  The album was written with touchstones like genre-crossing records from Broadcast and Wire's “154” in mind, in between Emily dragging everyone to see terrible movies in theaters and Jim finishing up his PhD in ethnomusicology.  The result is a semi-electronic, often ambient and haunting record, that sounds variously like zombies playing surf rock ("Imagining the Bodies"), glitchy, pounding IDM ("Tiger Trees"), and creepy Spector girl-group tunes ("Sharing") among dozens of others.  Emily and Travis obsessed over the melodies this time around, pushing each other to sing better at all turns, and harmonizing in ways they'd never tried before.  The band slept in sleeping bags in the studio (Uniform, in Philadelphia), staying up late and waking up early to obsess more, and to fidget with sounds they'd never played with before. Friend Jay Heiselman mixed Prom over the 2010 holidays, diving deep into post-production to help create the intensely new direction for the band.
To Grooms, this record is about freedom: to be catchy, to be unabashedly pretty, to try entirely new types of music, and even to write their first-ever breakup song.  They hope you sing along to Prom, that you get happy and sad to it in the way you do with great pop records, and that you get just a little freaked out when their dark side shows up here and there.

Trombone Shorty captures New Orleans and national honors

Trombone Shorty’s star continues to rise as he is honored with more local and national awards. The just-turned 25-year-old New Orleans singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and all-around musical powerhouse was awarded five Best of the Beat Awards from New Orleans’ OffBeat magazine. And Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews was named among NBC News’ The Grio’s 100: History Makers in the Making, a list of the top 100 African-American men and women who are writing the next chapter of American history.

At the Best of the Beat ceremony January 28 celebrating OffBeat’s nominees, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue received the most awards of the night, winning Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for Backatown, Best R&B/Funk Artist, Best R&B/Funk Album for Backatown, and Best Trombonist. “On Backatown, Trombone Shorty has created an album that brings the New Orleans brass band and funk traditions up to date,” says Alex Rawls, editor of OffBeat. “His roots are clearly in the Crescent City, but he has the chops, charisma and stage savvy to take his music to a much larger audience.”

Backatown, the band’s major label debut, immediately hit #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart, staying there for nine weeks and now, more than nine months later, is still in the Top 5.  Backatown is also nominated for this year’s GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

This makes three times since 2007 that OffBeat has awarded Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Best R&B/Funk Band, while Trombone Shorty himself has picked up three awards for Performer/ Artist of the Year and two awards for Best Trumpeter. The Best of the Beat Award nominees are selected by the magazine’s editors and writers, and the public votes to choose the winners. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue were on hand to receive their awards in person at the celebration in New Orleans. The next morning Trombone Shorty headed to Jamaica to join Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus II in Negril, where he collaborated as a special featured guest with Gov’t Mule as well as on Warren Haynes’ solo performance.

In honor of Black History Month, theGrio.com, a division of NBC News, has announced its TheGrio’s 100: History Makers in the Making, which this year includes Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. The list is nominated by a team of experts, affiliates, and contributors from across the country, and members of TheGrio.com and NBC News editorial teams. The Grio’s 100 shines a spotlight on African-American history makers and industry leaders from 10 fields, including business, education, sports, science and the environment, media, service and activism, politics, health, pop culture and the arts.  Trombone Shorty joins First Lady Michelle Obama, singer and education advocate Jill Scott, actress Viola Davis, Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones and NBA star Kevin Durant, among others.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue’s Backatown tour continues this spring and summer beginning February 2 in Chicago with more dates across the European continent, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and all over Canada and the U.S.

Blair Announces Feb/Mar Tour With Say Hi

Brooklyn-based artist Blair has announced new tour dates in support of Say Hi this February and March. The lengthy jaunt will launch February 18th at Neurolux in Boise, ID and wrap up March 30th at The Media Club in Vancouver, BC. The tour includes a hometown show on March 7th at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, as well as two dates during this year's SXSW festival. Blair's debut full-length Die Young was released early last year by Autumn Tone Records.

Die Young is a winsome mix of dreamy, hazy indie pop influenced by Blair's love for '90s FM radio (think Beck and Nirvana) and the records spun on her mother's turntable (like Bob Dylan and Neil Young) while growing up in New Orleans, LA. The album was written - in both her hometown and Los Angeles, CA - and re-recorded over the course of five years. The songs were finally laid to tape in New Orleans using both traditional studios and makeshift home setups, with the help of producer Keith Ferguson and a host of musician friends filling out the parts.

As her airy vocals tell stories of heartache, daydreams and memories, throughout the album Blair shows herself to be a nimble musician and songwriter with an innate sense of sumptuous melody. Whether the angular guitar pop of opener "Rampage," the sweetly yearning "Hearts" (listen/download here), the sprightly whimsy of "Hello Halo," the '60s girl-group swing of "Paris France," or the soaring, lush "Wolfboy" (listen/download here), it's easy to understand why PasteMagazine.com gave her its 'Best Of What's Next' label and why Muzzle Of Bees declared Die Young "...a pop album for this generation...one of the year's most promising surprises."

Great American Taxi's Reckless Habits Winter Tour

“Fun! Look it up in the dictionary and Vince Herman’s name should appear somewhere in the definition,” wrote Elmore magazine in 2010. The fun continues for Vince Herman and Great American Taxi with a newly added leg of tour dates that kicks Great American Taxi into high gear in the New Year. To date, many of the most innovative and acclaimed players currently on the jamband/newgrass circuit have joined Taxi’s Reckless Habits Tour, which largely features the band’s signature style of country-, rock- and bluegrass-influenced Americana musical styles.

Taxi’s second and latest album, Reckless Habits, garnered impressive nods in 2010, appearing on several Best of 2010 lists. And the band’s energetic live shows have grabbed critical attention: “A few of my favorite shows from last year include any time Great American Taxi played Moe’s Alley,” said Beth Peerless at the Monterey County Herald.  Amazon.com is currently featuring Reckless Habits as part of its Fill Your Player MP3 digital download promotion of critically acclaimed releases for only five dollars.

Railroad Earth will headline a string of January shows with Great American Taxi — RRE’s Tim Carbone produced Taxi’s Reckless Habits. In February, Great American Taxi teams up with the Emmitt-Nershi Band at Whisky Jack’s in Big Sky, Montana, and Todd Snider at the Nugget in Nevada. Taxi also backs Snider on his recent release, The Storyteller Live, which includes a bonus DVD of Taxi and Todd performing at the TPAC in Nashville, Tenn.

Artists joining Taxi onstage in the past year include: contemporary troubadour Todd Snider, the exceptional mandolin virtuoso and versatile vocalist Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon and his own Drew Emmitt Band), Billy Nershi (The String Cheese Incident), and the David Nelson Band, with their exploratory improvisational jam sessions.

Reckless Habits appeared on several Best of 2010 lists; it peaked at #12 on the Americana radio charts in 2010 and finished in the Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Americana albums of the year, coming in at #54; it held the top spot on Colorado radio in April and May of 2010 and charted at #6 overall on Colorado radio for the year. The album was picked in a No Depression Top 10 of the year and continues to chart in the Top Ten for spins on Jambands.com radio.

From the stage, Mambazo's nine-man a cappella team will transport concert-goers to the open fields and idyllic world of their youth in South Africa's Zulu country, singing the traditional South African folk tunes from their forthcoming album 'Songs From A Zulu Farm' (out February 1 from Listen 2 Entertainment Group/ Razor & Tie Entertainment) as well as selections from their nearly 50 year career.

These songs speak to the universal joys of childhood. "Whether you are in Ladysmith, Virginia, or Ladysmith, South Africa," says Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder and frontman Joseph Shabalala, "children are hearing songs they will carry with them for the rest of their lives and share with their own children. We hope that these songs sung to South African children can be enjoyed by families in many other places in the world."

Sharon Van Etten Announces U.S. Tour

If your New Year’s Resolution is to finally see one of 2010’s most-loved singer/songwriters perform live, then you might be in luck! After touring Japan next month, Sharon Van Etten will embark on a six-city tour in January, followed by a string of highly-coveted international dates opening for The National.  She’ll bring along songs from her recently-released sophomore album epic (Ba Da Bing), as well as a few new gems that will steal your heart (though just to warn you, her songs might break your heart as well).  Don’t miss her this time around!

Just before Sharon launched her current tour opening for Junip, she visited the NPR offices to film a Tiny Desk Concert, which is now available online.  In this video, one witnesses a charming woman who grins humbly after each song before plunging into the next set of emotionally-charged lyrics.  And if she wasn’t busy enough, this week marks the release of I’m Giving Up On You (Polyvinyl), a 7” featuring two exclusive songs (which is sold out, but available on iTunes), plus you can find Sharon’s distinctive vocals on the forthcoming album from Brooklyn-based band Airwaves.
