Del McCoury and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band Celebrate Mardi Gras

In honor of Mardi Gras this week, Bluegrass Legend Del McCoury and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have shared the song “One More ‘Fore I Die” off their upcoming collaborative album, American Legacies (out April 12th).  Click HERE to stream/download the track, which premiered at NPR yesterday.  The two also filled the historic Preservation Hall yesterday for a special performance on Lundi Gras Day. Today they will team up again for the Preservation Hall Parade that occurs annually on Mardi Gras.  The parade will gather on the corner of Dauphine and Frenchmen Streets and will commence at 2:00pm.  The parade route will conclude at Preservation Hall.

Del and the PHJB will also celebrate the advance release of a special Mardi Gras themed vinyl edition of American Legacies. About American Legacies:

American music fans have an unprecedented opportunity to hear two masterful groups explore the common ground where bluegrass and jazz meet when the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band release their collaborative American Legacies project on April 12th via McCoury Music and Preservation Hall Recordings.  Inspired by the success of the Del McCoury’s participation on 2010’s PRESERVATION, a PHJB project made with multiple artists to benefit New Orleans’ unique Preservation Hall venue and its Music Outreach Program, the set offers a dozen songs filled with deep respect and joyful virtuosity.  Complementing the release, the two groups have announced a joint tour that will feature them performing on their own and together in a groundbreaking concert experience.

American Legaciesis a no-holds-barred tour of songs and sounds that sum up the simultaneous (and often intersecting) histories of two distinctively American musical forms—the jazz that has drawn music lovers from around the world to New Orleans for more than a century, and the “hillbilly jazz” of bluegrass, created more than 60 years ago by Del McCoury’s one-time employer, Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys.

Jake Shimabukuro & His Ukulele Top Billboard This Week

Jake Shimabukuro has conquered the Billboard music charts this week with his instrument re-defining new album, Peace Love Ukulele. The album debuted at #1 on the "World Albums" chart (the ukulele virtuoso's best showing to date), blazed the "Heatseekers" chart with a Hot Shot debut in the 4th position, and also made it onto the “Independent Albums” chart at #31. Peace Love Ukulele, out on Hitchhike Records, has shattered the first week sales records of all previous Shimabukuro releases.

The Honolulu native and his stalwart ukulele skills were recently featured on NPR'S “Weekend Edition,” where he voiced his conviction that "if everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place.”’

Bing Crosby: Seasons (Deluxe Edition)
Bing's final album, originally released in 1977, has never been available on CD, let alone with 13 bonus tracks! This new deluxe edition features the original twelve tracks plus Bing's very last recordings, made at a BBC session three days before his death, and five poems recorded for fan clubs but never distributed. Includes from the original release 'Seasons; On the Very First Day of the Year; June in January; Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year; April Showers; June Is Bustin' Out All Over; In the Good Old Summertime; Summer Wind; Autumn in New York; September Song; Sleigh Ride', and 'Yesterday When I Was Young', plus the bonus poems 'Around the Corner; If; The Singers; Lucy Gray (Solitude)', and 'The Slaves Dream', and the BBC recordings 'Feels Good, Feels Right; Nevertheless; The Only Way to Go; Summer Wind; The Night Is Young and You're So Beautiful; There's Nothing I Haven't Sung About; As Time Goes By', and 'Once in a While'!

Bing Crosby: Return To Paradise Islands (Deluxe Edition)
Bing's collection of Hawaiian favorites was recorded in 1963 by Frank Sinatra's Reprise label and has never been available on CD or even reissued at all! And for this edition a new stereo mix has been created from the original session tapes that is simply, well, paradisiaical. Bing is accompanied by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra on 'Keep Your Eyes on the Hands; Forevermore; Love and Aloha; Beautiful Kahana; The Hukilau Song; The Old Plantation; Lovely Hula Hands; Frangipani Blossom; Farewell My Kane; Adventures in Paradise; Return to Paradise', and Home in Hawaii'. Six bonus tracks include a brief session outtake of 'Return to Paradise' and five previously unissued Hawaiian tracks recorded in 1961 featuring 'My Little Grass Shack (in Kealakakua, Hawaii); The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai; Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula; Ukulele Lady', and 'King's Serenade'.

Bing Crosby:
On The Sentimental Side (Deluxe Edition - previously unreleased album)
Recorded in 1962 and never released, this collection of popular songs, many dating back to Bing's boyhood, has been long rumored to exist by Crosby fans, and finally appears here with five bonus tracks! The original album is all medleys: 'My Bonnie/The Band Played On; Always/Wishing; Remember/Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet; All Alone/In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree; How Can I Leave Thee/A Bird In a Gilded Cage/The Sidewalks of New York; If I Didn't Care/Blueberry Hill; Beautiful Dreamer/The Last Rose of Summer; Roll On Silver Moon/Now the Day Is Over; Tom Dooley/The Old Gray Mare; Together/What'll I Do; Look For the Silver Lining/Say It With Music', and 'Did You Ever See a Dream Walking/A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody'. The bonus tracks hail from Bing's 1950s CBS radio shows with Buddy Cole; they include 'Because; Love's Old Sweet Song; Smilin' Through; Whither Thou Goest', and a 1960 take of Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral'!

Bing Crosby: Bing On Broadway (new album)
When it came to interpreting show tunes, Bing had few peers. This brand-new collection of rare material features him singing selections from such legendary Broadway musicals as 'South Pacific, The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Can-Can, Anything Goes, My Fair Lady' and many others, accompanied by Buddy Cole & His Trio on 17 tracks and John Scott Trotter on two tracks. Includes 'Swanee; Carolina in the Morning; Mandy; How Long Has This Been Going On?; My Heart Stood Still; Crazy Rhythm; Ain't Misbehavin'; Fine and Dandy; But Not for Me; New Sun in the Sky; Taking a Chance on Love; It's Only a Paper Moon; All Through the Night; Come Rain or Come Shine; A Cockeyed Optimist; It's All Right with Me; Hey There; Heart', and 'Get Me to the Church on Time'.

Bing Crosby: El Senor Bing (Deluxe Edition)
Bing loved Spanish music, and for this 1960 collection, recorded for his own Project label, he was accompanied by none other than the Billy May Orchestra— the CD debut of this LP! Includes from the original album 'Ramona/Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy);. Marta/The Rose in Her Hair; Again/Allez-Vous-En (Go Away); In the Still of the Night/I Could Have Danced All Night; Pagan Love Song/Cuban Love Song; Down Argentine Way/What a Difference a Day Made; Heavenly Night (Cielito Lindo)/My Shawl; Malaguena (at the Crossroads)/Andalucia (The Breeze and I); How High the Moon/Old Devil Moon', and 'C'est Magnifique/Taking a Chance on Love'. There are six Spanish-flavored bonus tracks from Bing's 1950s CBS radio sessions with Buddy Cole & His Trio including 'Papa Loves Mambo; Floras Negras; Solamente Una Vez; No Te Importe Saber (Let Me Love You Tonight); La Borrichita', and In 'A Little Spanish Town', plus the markedly different mono mix of the original album. 'Muy sabroso!'

Bing Crosby
: So Rare: Treasures From The Crosby Archive (2 CD set/new album)
Carefully compiled by Crosby archivist Robert S. Bader, this career-spanning collection of rare and unusual recordings from Bing Crosby's personal archive includes his first solo radio performance from 1931, some rare private recordings and unknown outtakes as well as the first album appearances of several rare single tracks–many of which are mixed in stereo for the first time! Includes 'Just One More Chance' and 'I'm Through with Love' from Fifteen Minutes with Bing Crosby; 'Buckin' the Wind' from a Spanish radio promo disc; 'Where the Turf Meets the Surf', Del Mar race track's theme song; Kraft Music Hall performances of 'Over the Rainbow,' 'As Time Goes By', and 'Why Don't You Fall in Love with Me'; 'I'll Be Seeing You' from a 8/31/44 British broadcast; 'You're the Gem State Wonder, Idaho; Santa Claus Is Coming to Town', a 1954 recording for Shriner's Hospital; 'My Old Kentucky Home', recorded for the Kentucky Junior Derby; radio performances of 'What Do You Mean, You Lost Your Dog?; We're in the Money (The Golddigger's Song); I Hear Music; I Can't Get Started; Pledging My Love; Because', and 'The Yellow Rose of Texas; So Rare' from The Ford Road Show; the Columbia singles 'Straight down the Middle' and 'Tomorrow's My Lucky Day'; first-time stereo appearances of the MGM singles 'The Second Time Around' and 'Incurably Romantic'; a 1960 private recording of 'Anthem of the Clams'; a stereo TV outtake of 'Pennies from Heaven'; the Reprise singles 'Far From Home; How Green Was My Valley; Step to the Rear', and 'What Do We Do with This World'; Reprise outtakes of 'Live a Little' and 'Don't Let a Good Thing Get Away'; the unreleased singles 'Take a Longer Look' and 'The Human Race', and 'That's What Life Is All About' live from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on March 17, 1976. 34 tracks, 26 unreleased!

Bill Evans Soulgrass Special Edition w/ Special Guest Sam Bush

bush_evansTHE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB IS VERY PLEASED TO PRESENT THE KING OF NEWGRASS SAM BUSH AND JAZZ-SOUL SAX MAN BILL EVANS IN A VERY SPECIAL APPEARANCE APRIL 2-5.  BILL EVANS SOULGRASS SPECIAL EDITION SPECIAL GUEST SAM BUSH FEATURING DENNIS CHAMBERS, RICHARD BONA, RYAN CAVANAUGH AND CHRISTIAN HOWES (SAT AND SUN ONLY

Bill Evans

Throughout his 20-year career as a solo artist, saxophonist Bill Evans  has explored a variety of musical settings that go well beyond the confines of traditional jazz, including hip-hop, fusion, reggae, Brazilian and slamming funk.  Evans stepped into more adventurous territory with his 2006 Grammy nominated release Soulgrass, blending jazz, funk and bluegrass into a seamless and wholly unique hybrid of quintessentially American styles. He collaborated on the project with an exciting and eclectic group of all-stars, including Vinnie Colaiuta, Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Bruce Hornsby, John Scofield, Victor Wooten and Mark Egan.

His follow up to that widely acclaimed project, found him pushing the envelope a little further in that direction on The Other Side Of Something. “It’s an extension of Soulgrass,” he says of his latest release. “I am always trying to push the envelope and take the music somewhere it hasn’t been before. I am just beginning to explore all of the possibilities. I have been touring a lot over the last two years, using the banjo and fiddle as my rhythm instruments, so by the time I started writing new music for the new CD, I was over-flowing with ideas. One of the first ideas I had was to sing for the first time on one of my CDs. The saxophone and voice are very similar in range so it seemed like a very natural thing for me to do. It is, of course, another instrument so I have been working very hard at it. People will hear a new side to me that they have never heard before”.

The Other Side Of Something features Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Richard Bona, Victor Wooten, Dennis Chambers, as well as his regular touring band of Chris Howes, Ryan Cavanaugh, and Joel Rosenblatt.

Evans first joined Miles Davis group at the age of 22 in 1980, and went on to record six records and tour the world with Davis numerous times over a four-year period. He then toured and recorded three CDs with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and later played with Herbie Hancock, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Steps Ahead and Mick Jagger, among others. The saxman has been touring almost exclusively with his own band since 1990, playing well over 100 concerts per year worldwide. He has recorded 15 solo CD’s and received two Grammy nominations, one for Soul Insider(2002) and the other for Soulgrass ( 2006).

Sam Bush

Though he admits a certain discomfort with the moniker "King of Newgrass" Sam Bush has more than earned it. As cofounder and leader of the seminal progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival through 18 years during the 1970s and '80s, Bush is responsible for influencing legions of bands like Nickel Creek, Yonder Mountain String Band, and String Cheese Incident, to name just a few.

When not heading his own band, Bush has spent the past 15 years as a supersideman with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, and the Flecktones; spearheaded boundary-stretching collaborations with Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, and David Grisman, and driven nearly every "bluegrass supergroup" imaginable with his inimitable mandolin playing.

icon) on mandolin . Bill Evans and Sam Bush have teamed up before to produce an invigorating blend of styles that gets the audience up out of their seats. Sam also hosted the Bluegrass awards last year in Nashville and came home with the "best mandolin of the year" award.

Dennis Chambers is a drummer whose propulsive style and versatility have enabled him to play in combos or large groups, and work with fusion and hard bop bandleaders. He has released two sessions as a leader and recorded and played with Parliament and Funkadelic, Special EFX, David Sanborn, John Scofield, Mike Stern/Bob Berg Band, Randy Brecker’s Band and Michael Brecker’s Band, Mike Urbaniak's Band/Bill Evans Band/CTI All Stars/George Duke/Stanley Clark's Band/Steve Kahn's Eyewitness Band/John McLaughlin Band. 2005 till now: Santana - 2007: Tower Of Power.

RICHARD BONA Dubbed “The African Sting, Richard Bona has been recognized as one of the planet’s five revelations of the past decade. A complete artist, an absolute master of his art, and a melodist of rare elegance and sensuality, he’s also a poignant singer, and a member of that exclusive club, "the world’s best bassists. ”His unique style is situated at the crossroads of a horde of influences - jazz, bossa nova, pop music, afro-beat, traditional song, and funk.

RYAN CAVANAUGH Whether playing traditional bluegrass music, or adding a unique twist to a modern fusion quintet with master saxophonist Bill Evans, Ryan Cavanaugh strives to be original and innovative on the banjo. Having shared stages with Jazz legends such as Bill Evans, John McLaughlin, and Bluegrass legends like Sam Bush, Cavanaugh's journey has taken him from the fiddlers' conventions of VA to the Jazz audiences of Europe.

CHRISTIAN HOWES
has already made an indelible mark and is poised to be a path-finding figure on the contemporary violin. He’s won recognition and kudos from artists and critics alike. Says guitar pioneer Les Paul, with whom Christian has made numerous appearances: “There is nobody better than this guy.” The prominent artists Howes has performed and/or recorded with include Greg Osby, Randy Brecker, James Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Akua Dixon’s Quartette Indigo, Billy Hart, D.D. Jackson, David Murray, Steve Turre’s Sextet with Strings, Jane Monheit, Dr. John, Frank Vignola, and Lenny White, to name a few.
