Guitarist Mike Keneally + Drummer Marco Minnemann = Evidence of Humanity

One bright morning, world-renowned drummer Marco Minnemann (Eddie Jobson's UZ, Nina Hagen, Necrophagist, Paul Gilbert, David Torn and countless others) settled down behind the DW kit in his secluded hideaway, punched the record button, and proceeded to pound out an astounding 52-minute improvised solo. When it was finished, he christened it Normalizer 2 and offered it as a sort of gift to a handful of his favorite guitarists, hoping that they would each add their own signature madness to the mix.

Multi-instrumentalist Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Dethklok, Joe Satriani and, again, countless others) was someone Marco hoped would dig the idea. In the throes of recording his intense and complex Scambot 1 album (released last year on Exowax), Mike leapt at Marco's offer-- the creation of Evidence of Humanity would be a joyous, freewheeling counterpoint to his meticulous work on Scambot. "A fun ride," Mike would recall.

Frequently, while recording his parts, Mike would respond improvisationally to a section of Marco's drum solo, recording a melodic statement on guitar, keyboard or bass, and then overdubbing orchestrational support to the original improvised part. On other sections, Mike would compose movement strenuously in unison with Marco's initial improvised outburst.

The ecstatic result is something like two of the world's foremost musicians improvising together, but not at the same time. It's a record unlike any other that Mike has recorded (but probably closest to Nonkertompf, his indefinable, mostly instrumental 1999 solo extravaganza). Evidence of Humanity seems to have a life of its own, mutating and maturing with each listen.

Accompanying the Evidence of Humanity CD is a DVD, containing a tasty reimagining of the original concept. This time, Mike and Marco got together in real time and vaulted into the ether for another 52-minute musical improvisation, a feat that was videotaped for your pleasure and entitled Elements Of A Manatee. The DVD also includes an insightful conversation between the two kindred musical spirits, shot in the back seat of a car hurtling toward the Southern California desert's dilapidated Salton Sea.

Christopher Paul Stelling Reveals Strange Darkness

Brooklyn-based songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling unveiled a new live performance video for his song “The Museum vs. Jesus,” as well as a live cut of his captivating track, “Strange Darkness,” both of which premiered at Jonny Leather’s new site, Mecca Lecca. Although Stelling doesn’t have an official release out (yet), he’s been busy finishing up nearly 50 songs in anticipation of his 2011 debut- all while mesmerizing NYC audiences all summer.

Performing in the live setting is precisely where Stelling excels. As he puts it, “A recording, the way I make it, is the way I give a performance in a studio. I play to the room. I react to the environment live. At this point, I haven’t had the privilege of spending any serious amount of time in the studio. The recordings I have are all the result of one overnight recording session at a college upstate. I did 20 songs in 12-hour stretch. Recording is a privilege that costs money, and I’m broke. I look forward to trying someday, though.”

With a heartfelt voice, dynamic finger-picked guitar stylings, and a songwriting approach that combines folkloric, mythological, and religious imagery, Stelling has forged a style all his own, yet hauntingly familiar.

Kyle Park To Release FALL EP on September 21

Country singer Kyle Park, who believes his fans deserve more than one album every 12 months, will release on September 21 his second EP this year that will ultimately become the foundation of a full-length album he will release in 2011.

The featured single from Park’s FALL EP is “All Night,” a love song with smart lyrics about how long it might take to heal a broken heart, with or without a new paramour. Again, Park’s pure country voice and pure country vibe shine through in his modern country, “rock with a twang” style.

Park spent the year touring, and he will continue on the road behind the new release. The recording artist routinely plays 200 shows a year in venues, music festivals and intimate honky-tonks, in all corners of the Lone Star State.

As Robert K. Oermann of MusicRow advises, “Lend him your ears.”

Soulive Pays Tribute to The Beatles on 'Rubber Soulive'

New York City's preeminent soul jazz trio, Soulive, bring the funk to The Beatles' iconic repertoire with the release of Rubber Soulive due September 14 on the band's own Royal Family Records. Featuring renditions of 11 classics by The Fab Four, including "Come Together," "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Revolution," Rubber Soulive takes its place in a lineage of classic instrumental albums by the likes of Booker T. & The M.G.'s, George Benson and Count Basie that have paid tribute to The Beatles.  Soulive will announce an extended U.S. Fall tour to support the release in the coming weeks.

"We've always been big Beatles' fans. They're consistently in heavy rotation in all of our lives. And then for Halloween last year we had a great show in D.C. by trying out an all-Beatles set. The material was so much fun to play that we decided it had to be put to wax," explains Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno. "At first we thought about doing all of Rubber Soul, but with so many amazing songs to choose from we expanded the scope and picked the ones that lent themselves to our sound, and where we could  best add a Soulive flavor."

Recorded over four days at drummer Alan Evans' own Playonbrother Studios in upstate New York, Rubber Soulive presents the band back in its original trio format. After a handful of albums experimenting with different vocalists and horn sections, it's apparent from the album's opening track, a greasy rendition of "Drive My Car," that a return to form was in order. For the next 40 minutes, Soulive add their inimitable stamp to one classic after the next from The Beatles’ adored catalog. A stately bounce informs "In My Life" punctuated by a majestic organ break courtesy of Neal Evans. "Eleanor Rigby" finds Alan pushing insistent syncopation into the backbeat and Neal covering a full string section with his two hands. A gorgeous rendition of "Something" makes clear that while Krasno can get down with the best of them, he can also dig deep into the heart of a ballad as he rings every last drop of emotion from the classic George Harrison melody. The trio rounds out the set with a three-dimensional version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The performance concisely encapsulates the definitive Soulive sound built upon the trio's shimmering, wah-drenched guitar licks, soaring Hammond organ lines and relentlessly propulsive swing.

Over a decade into their career, Soulive are having more fun than ever recording and performing together. This past March the band set up shop at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg for a two-week residency dubbed Bowlive that featured special guests ranging from Talib Kweli to Susan Tedeschi to Raul Midon. The event will be documented on a forthcoming DVD release this winter. They operate their own state-of-the-art recording studio, as well as, their own record label Royal Family Records that alongside recent Soulive projects is preparing to offer up albums by Eric Krasno, Lettuce and Break Science. In early 2011, the fledgling indie will release the highly anticipated debut album from the acclaimed, young R&B vocalist Nigel Hall. In the coming months, however, the focus is clearly on the lineup that put them on the forefront of the soul jazz revival. With a fall tour on the horizon and a delectable new album filled with red hot renditions of classics by The Beatles, things are starting to "Come Together" for the original three, right now, all over again.

MARIO PAVONE'S ORANGE DOUBLE TENOR At Cornelia Street Cafe

Playscape Recordings is proud to announce the forthcoming world premiere of bassist/composer Mario Pavone's Arc Suite t/pi t/po, a suite of original compositions commissioned by chamber music America's 2009 new jazz works: commissioning and ensemble development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Pavone wrote the music for his long standing sextet, orange double tenor, which will perform the work live for the first time on june 8+9th at the Cornelia Street Café, before heading into the recording studio on june 10+11th.

The subsequent recording, also titled arc suite t/pi t/po, will be released by playscape recordings in November to coincide with Pavone's 70th birthday and 45th year in music. Orange Double Tenor features Tony Malaby and Jimmy Greene (saxophones), Dave Ballou (trumpet), Peter Madsen (piano), and Gerald Cleaver, (drums). Also part of this project are Steven Bernstein and Michael Musillami who, along with Pavone and Ballou, each arranged individual movements within the suite.

"I have reflected on the 1960's ... a time of incredible change and transformation ... and on being there and taking in not just the musicality of Trane, Cecil, Ornette, Mingus and Monk, but the physical prescence of these giants and the sociopolitical issues their work addressed. I look to re-envision and re-interpret in today's idiom, and in my compositional systems, the feeling, ethos and energy of that time and those players."

Jack Grace Band & Luther Wright and the Wrongs

With a new CD titled Drinking Songs for Lovers, one might be forgiven for believing that Jack Grace should ease up a little. A singer, songwriter and guitarist who has made a career out of following no one’s rules but his own is probably going to keep doing his thing until his liver lays down the law.

He’s earned praise from press and peers, and even a couple of legends. Opening for Jerry Lee Lewis afforded him a quotable anecdote after Lewis, listening to the band’s set backstage at BB Kings in NYC, quipped, “he sounds like that Cash kid, only good.” After Lewis’ set, Jack shook his hand and told him it had been an honor to share the stage with him. Lewis leaned in and said, "I really enjoyed your set."

A consummate live performer, lyricist, singer and guitarist, Jack is at the helm of a powerhouse band that plays kick the can with any musical genre that it stumbles across. Intelligence, humor and unpredictable cross-pollinations of musical categories await. But don’t take our word for it. "If you don't laugh and cry at the same time as Grace and his gracefully loose band navigate their way through such gems as ‘If You're Gonna Raise a Drunk’ and ‘Morning Margaritas,’ you better check your pulse. You might be disgracefully dead." – James Reaney, London Free Press (London, ON)

Luther Wright has been writing, recording and performing music for over 16 years now. In 1994 he joined up with Sarah Harmer to play lead guitar in the Canadian, pop-rock band, "Weeping Tile" (WEA/Atlantic). During the next 5 years of full-on touring and recording Luther and his roots compadres formed the now-renowned, country/punkgrass road daemons, "Luther Wright & The Wrongs".

Known on one hand for their brilliantly executed, country/bluegrass reworking of Pink Floyd’s classic The Wall, Luther and the band have also recorded and released three all-original albums, Hurtin' For Certain (1997), Rogers Waltz (1999), the valentine gone awry, Guitar Pickin' Martyrs (2003), and the recently released, Instrumentality. Also to boot, they made two cds of original childrens music under the guise of Butterfingers.

1320 Records to Release John Hughes' RESET THE WAREHOUSE May 18th

STS9's boutique record label, 1320 Records, proudly presents Reset the Warehouse, the new studio release from John Hughes (May 18th, 2010 / 1320 Records).  A new recording studio, a new record label, and a new record allow John Hughes to step out from the familiar surroundings of Hefty Records, the label he founded in 1996, to strengthen his creative partnership with 1320 Records.

Though Hughes has collaborated with label-founders STS9 for years, this marks his first official release on 1320-an alliance long in the making, given both parties' shared mission of creating and supporting new music under artist-run labels.  Like Hefty, 1320 is an independent, musician-run collective that stresses cooperation between the artist and label.

According to Hughes, "Working with 1320 affords [him] the freedom to focus entirely on the music and the live performances in support of the record."

And, STS9 adds about Hefty, "few contemporary American labels have had as much influence on [the band]. We are extremely honored and excited to be apart of the 'Reset' release."

Hughes has recorded and released over a dozen albums under various aliases and groups like Slicker, Brood, Some Water and Sun, and Bill Ding, as well as under his own name.  His latest creation, Reset the Warehouse, represents the prime selections from a productive period of meticulous tracking and experimentation at his HFT Studio, located outside of Chicago.

Working with a team of veteran musicians and trusted collaborators, Hughes has assembled a cohesive union of styles and recording techniques, resulting in a record that explores uncharted directions while remaining rooted in sounds and beats that a listener may only describe as "classic."

As Hughes explains, "I wanted this recording to have a live, gritty sound, so I took it outside of the computer as much as I could. It was mixed through a board to tape, and the synths are all analog. Within the context of an electronic record, the live performances also help give it a warm, organic feel."

When it came time to edit and mix the tracks, Hughes looked to vibraphonist Rick Embach, who was involved in the sessions from the earliest stages, as well as his old friend Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv.  Hughes brought his recording sessions to Eustis' studio in Chicago, and together they mixed the tracks thorough an analog mixing board and then to two-track tape, giving the album the finishing touches and appropriate analog "glue" it required.

Visit here to view the entire supporting cast of Reset the Warehouse.

The Reset the Warehouse track list is as follows:

1.  A Reflection of the Times

2.  Waukee Wallop

3.  Another One

4.  Reset The Warehouse

5.  Pterodactyl Piano Bar

6.  Little Dot in the Sky

7.  Done Everything

8.  Moan Pop Asheesh

9.  Witchfinger

10.  You Don't Love Me

11.  Wow, I Think I Love You

12.  Naphtha Jets

As his work in the studio continues to evolve, and interest in his music continues to soar, John Hughes takes to the road this summer with label mates STS9, in support of Reset the Warehouse.  Hughes will perform this August and September with STS9 at select events in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and at the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
