BOOMBOX CONTINUES ‘DOWNRIVERELECTRIC’ TOUR IN COLORADO

After a completely sold out Colorado tour in early 2010 with return trips this past summer to play the Mile High Music Festival and to close out the Westword Music Showcase, BoomBox returns for 7 dates with Sub Swara and their genre-bending bass music from Brooklyn, NY. These dates are sure to sell out quickly and all tickets are on sale now.

You can currently catch BoomBox on the East Coast leg of their ‘downriverelectric’ tour with stops in the mid-west before they make it to Colorado.

BoomBox, born out of legendary Muscle Shoals, AL features Producer/Engineer/DJ/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history, inspiring vision and pop culture influences to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard in the live music scene today. Their signature sound and high-energy shows bring live music to a new, elevated level.

BoomBox released their sophomore album, downriverelectric (available on iTunes) on June 30, 2010 using analog recording sessions and some of the same vintage gear as their Muscle Shoals predecessors. The album, with over 5000 units moved via their website in the first month, pays homage to the musical memoirs of Muscle Shoals’ past and to the rhythm of the Tennessee River, which has long inspired the group. From brand new cuts such as Dungeons and Watergun to live fan favorites Headchange and Mr. Boogie Man, the album deliberately weaves a variety of dance frenzy beats filled with catchy songwriting and soul shuttering low end.

Sub Swara creates, constructs, produces and plays genre-bending bass music that parallels the diversity of their hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Consisting of Dhruva Ganesan and Dave Sharma, Sub Swara’s musical genome brings together a wide assortment of DNA – from dub to hip-hop, dancehall to punk rock, and all the global sounds in between.

Phish Fall Tour 2010

Omara Portuondo, Nov 3 @ Boulder Theater

Singer. Born in 1930 in Cuba. The daughter of a Cuban baseball player, Portuondo began her career as a dancer at a famed Havana nightspot called the Tropicana. She started a duo with her sister Haydee, singing in clubs. The two later formed the group Cuarteto las d'Aida, which toured the United States and Europe, beginning in 1957.

In Miami at the time of the revolution, Portuondo decided to return to Cuba while her sister decided to stay in the United States. Under Fidel Castro, she continued to make music and tour in many countries except the United States. Portuondo is considered one of the most famous singers in Cuba. Known especially for her boleros, or ballads, she has been compared to American blues artist Billie Holliday and French vocalist Edith Piaf. A living legend, Portuondo has been the subject of a documentary, Omara, which won an award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.

Portuondo happened to be recording at the same Havana studios at the same time as the Buena Vista Social Club, an ensemble of Cuban musicians. Producer Ry Cooder asked her to lend her legendary voice to the project. As a result, she sang her lead vocals on "Veinte Años" on Buena Vista Social Club (1997). The album sold more than 1.5 million copies and stirred interest in Cuban music around the world. Unlike many of the other performers on the album, Portuondo already had a thriving career. But Buena Vista Social Club raised her profile in the United States and won her even more fans.

Portuondo continues to perform live and make new albums. Some of her most recent albums include Gran Omara Portuondo (2002) and Lagrimas Negras Canciones y Boleros (2005).

Nneka to Join Nas & Damien Marley on Distant Relatives Tour

Fresh off of the release of her first US album debut Concrete Jungle, Nneka has been announced as the support act for the historic Distant Relatives Tour with Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley hitting the road May 2010. The tour will stop in major cities across the country in support of their Distant Relatives album, which is a celebration of not only to the bond between the two artists, but the connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Nneka is deeply influenced by her roots. The political and social states of her home country are often prevalent in her music and live performances. It is this message of awareness, hope and love that made her a perfect fit for a collaboration with Nas and Damian Marley, both legendary artists and personal influences of Nneka’s. “With this tour,” Nneka explains, “we represent the fact that we are all connected to one another, all part of one entity and one source – which is love."

The tour extends Nneka’s highly successful introduction to the United States, having been heralded by the likes of Spin, Rolling Stone, and Billboard, among others as the next “it” artist of 2010. Her stunning performance of “Heartbeat” on the Late Show with David Letterman left fans enthralled, and Perez Hilton has proclaimed her music to be “a gift to the world.” More recently, the critical acclaim piqued the interest of national retailer Whole Foods, who is now carrying her album as part of their “Artist Discovery” program.

And this is just the beginning. The Distant Relatives Tour is just the next chapter in Nneka’s ongoing crusade to spread the message of unconditional love to a family of fans across the globe. With lyrics like “come let us be truthful, surrender our pride / admit the stains on our, our chest our hands / we seek, we find” she reminds us that as a global community we are responsible, and further inspires us that we are all indeed, distant relatives.

Concrete Jungle is in stores now on Epic/Decon.

Blue Turtle Seduction: 16 States for 13 Floors Tour

blue-turtleBlue Turtle Seduction is no stranger to the road - and now their upcoming “16 States, 13 Floors Tour,” leads them across 16 states in support of their digital release of 13 Floors, proof this touring juggernaut is primed to give the fans ample opportunity to hear the latest tunes featured on the release. The bluegrass, folk, hip-hop and rock ensemble will kick off the tour in Sparks, Nevada, on April 18 before making their way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and several others before heading back west with a finale in Dunsmuir, CA, at Sengthong’s Blue Sky Room on May 16, less than a month after the tour kicks off.

Hailing from South Lake Tahoe, CA, the band released the digital version of their album 13 Floors on Feb. 10. Perhaps the truest encapsulation of the essence of the band, this release pieces influences from The String Cheese Incident to Duran Duran to The Clash into a 13 track good vibe record. Since forming in 2001, the band has worked to bring the good mountain vibes together with the easy living vibes of the coast of California. The album is at times rock, at times bluegrass, occasionally hip-hop and gypsy folk at the core. The album showcases each musician equally, with intricate undertones of a deeper side of the band. Dennis Cook of JamBase.com said of the album in a Sept. 2008 review, “… 13 Floors is a good time, plain and simple, and a finely crafted studio effort that hints at their true depths.”

Featuring Jay Seals (guitar, vocals) Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass) and Adam Navone (drums), the band met while working at a resort in South Lake Tahoe. Their combined effort on-stage leaves no opportunity for crowds to just stand there, but rather, get down and dance. Big smiles and high energy typify a Blue Turtle Seduction show, all the while spreading the socially aware message the band has grown to be known for.

Already the band has worked up thrilling stage interpretations of the songs off of 13 Floors, so fans should expect to hear the album in variation at stops along the 16-state run. And further expect those songs to lead into jam sessions, then falling back into chorus. Several highlights on this tour include the Norman Music Festival and the Hemp Hoe Down, as well as sharing bills with Oakhurst, That One Guy, Madahoochi, 56 Hope Road and Pert Her Sandstone. Spring is a great time for a road trip and Blue Turtle Seduction is really looking forward to this one.
