The 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival will begin on Thursday July 7th with none other than Sonny Rollins as the Special Nights’ headliner. This jazz legend had been on the festival’s wish list for a very long time and the birthday edition is an excellent occasion. His concert is preceded by the Michel Portal Quintet. The Nathan Daems Quintet, opens the Special Night after having won Young Jazz Talent 2010, the youth contest held yearly on the festival’s fringes.

On Friday the 8th of July, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia, together with special guest Gonzalo Rubalcaba will perform, with Dave Holland Quintet and Al Foster/George Mraz Quartet feat. Fred Hersch. The day’s opener is a coaching project in co-operation with University College Conservatory Ghent called Quartet dal Cuore feat. Paolo Ghetti.

July 9th is the festival’s first Saturday and a Special Night as well. B.B. King, Mavis Staples and the trio of Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland will be present.

On Sunday July 10th, the festival’s first four days will be concluded by Return to Forever IV Hymn of the 7th Galaxy Tour (an excellent band with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale). Thursday July 14th three jazz queens will line up with Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. Three current icons will pay tribute to the women of song from the last generation. They will be preceded by Jef Neve and his trio and Philip Catherine Plays Cole Porter.

Both revelations Agnes Obel and Agnus & Julia Stone are on stage Friday July 15th. This day will be supplemented by local band  Absynthe Minded. It’s a day dedicated to bands currently breaking through internationally and striving to meet high expectations in the future.

Gent Jazz Festival announces Gotan Project who are electro-tango masters and a retro-funk musician Raphael Saadiq on July 16th. Nouvelle Vague will be the first group to play on the initial day of the Gentse Feesten.

Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub feat. Trixie Whitley & Brian Blade will play on the closing day, July 17th. The festival organization looks forward to this concert after having cancelled Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub last year due to a motorcycle accident. But we are looking forward to vocalist Trixie Whitley as well. Last year her performance won hearts and minds with a special project. Later that day groups include: BackBack which is a local band, Red Snapper and Morcheeba with frontwoman Skye in the original line-up.

The music contest ‘Young Jazz Talent Ghent, an initiative in co-operation Duvel-Moortgat brewery will take place at the festival grounds’ entrance. Free entry every time right before the first concert on the main stage.

New names @ Gent Jazz Festival 2011

Gent Jazz Festival (7-17 July) is able to add more great names to its line-up. On Saturday 17th July we are honored to welcome the masters of contemporary tango, the Gotan Project, as well as retro-funk artist Raphael Saadiq.

Thursday 14th July we are glad to present to you three queens of jazz, Sing The Truth: Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves & Lizz Wright continue the legacies of Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. The women will follow a performance by Jef Neve and his Trio, who have become the favorite of the crowd. Gent Jazz Festival will be opened by the winner of Young Jazz Talent Gent 2010, the Nathan Daems Quintet. It will be the start of a great festival day which will be headlined by an artist that festival director Bertrand Flamang dreamt of programming 10 years ago. For the 9th of July we previously announced BB King and Steven De Bruyn, Tony Gyselinck & Roland and they will be accompanied by gospel and blues diva Mavis Staples.

  • Nathan Daems Quintet is the winner of the youth competition Young Jazz talent 2010. The jury said about them: “If the members of this band keep on inspiring each other and if leader Nathan Daems takes control a bit firmer, this quintet has great perspectives.” This year they open the 10th edition of the Gent Jazz Festival. One year later we are looking forward to the result.
  • More than fifty years ago, Mavis Staples took her first steps into music history when she became a member of The Staple Singers. This blues and gospel diva is in topnotch condition and proves it on her recent album ‘You’re Not Alone’. She’s back, better than before, all thanks to Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) with whom she made a collaboration.
  • Jef Neve hardly needs any introduction. He is without a doubt the Belgian jazz pianist of the moment. He performs in his trio with Teun Verbruggen and Ruben Samama.
  • Sing The Truth: Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright & Angelique Kidjo are the best female jazz singers of their generation. Earlier they had sung in a project featuring the music of Nina Simone. This time they interpret and revise the music of three legends: Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta.
  • Raphael Saadiq: This contemporary funk soul brother brings his own version of the Motown and Stax sound he grew up. Raphael Saadiq stands for funky and danceable soul.
  • Gotan Project (photo): The French-Argentinean collective, Gotan Project succeeds at mixing and matching the passion and sensuality which are typical of tango. Adding a dose of electronic elements give a contemporary feel and makes it possible for the band to reintroduce tango in the 21st century.

Gent Jazz Preview

Step by step, summertime is getting closer … the most beautiful period of the year with many festivals to choose from. One of those splendid festivals, is GentJazz, which takes place from July 8 to July 19 in the gardens of De Bijloke, one of the most beautiful sites of the city, an ideal environment for those who like to be busy with music, dance and other forms of art.

gent jazzNowadays, many different musical styles are often categorised as jazz. However, these styles can be divided into two distinct sections: on the one hand, jazz based on tradition (traditional jazz, mainstream, bop, avant-garde, free...); on the other hand, jazz which has developed from diverse forms with more popular musical trends, the so-called fusion with funk, soul, singer-songwriter, techno, world, hip-hop,…

The Gent Jazz Festival aims to give a true and present-day representation of both movements, with a progressive approach, presenting both legends and newcomers, both national and international, allowing musicians to convey their artistic adventure.

The festival consists of two parts, both created around their own musical idiom. The theme of the first part of the festival is pure, genuine and classic jazz. Today's jazz with a recognition for the past. Today's jazz confronting the past. Senior jazz musicians looking at today's society. Fusion is the keyword for the second part of the festival. This section aims to present jazz as a living genre with influences from many musical styles.

This year, the Gent Jazz Festival opens with a Special Night featuring BB King.

Other highlights this year are: Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest, Sing The Truth Nina Simone Tribute, George Benson, Jamie Lidell, Lambchop, Rodrigo y Gabriela (photo), Marianne Faithfull, Jamie Cullum, etc. Line up: www.gentjazz.com.

Lambchop completes line-up of the Gent Jazz Festival

The last group for the Gent Jazz Festival (July 8th to 19th inclusive) is Lambchop. This American band completes the line-up of Friday, July 17th, featuring José James and Rodrigo y Gabriela. As we had already announced, BB King, Jamie Cullum, George Benson, Jamie Lidell, Marianne Faithfull, McCoy Tyner Trio feat. Bill Frisell and Joe Jackson will also be present.

Over the past 15 years, Lambchop has become one of the most exciting bands within the Americana genre. With their subtle mix of country, rock, pop, folk and soul, the group centered by Kurt Wagner has released 10 albums. Year by year, Lambchop has developed into a musical collective built around front man and creative mastermind Kurt Wagner, one of the best song writers of his generation. The driving force behind Lambchop has one of the most recognizable, warm and serene voices and at the same time. He writes ironic lyrics in which the melancholy is never far away and Wagner reveals himself as a wonderful narrator.
