Sugar Hill Records to Release Nickel Creek Titles on Vinyl

Sugar Hill Records is excited to announce that they will be releasing a trio of Nickel Creek titles on deluxe vinyl - exclusively for Record Store Day, Saturday April 16th.  The titles include Nickel Creek’s now Platinum certified debut, Nickel Creek, the GRAMMY award winning This Side, and their final Sugar Hill release, Why Should The Fire Die?. All titles are deluxe two-album sets featuring digitally remastered audio.  A mandolin autographed by the members of Nickel Creek will be given away online as part of a Record Store Day promotion as well.

Nickel Creek, who began their relationship with Sugar Hill Records in 2000, were named “music innovators for the New Millennium” by Time Magazine.  Their self-titled debut Nickel Creek received widespread critical acclaim, garnering multiple award nominations, and has sold over one million albums to date. The 2002 release, This Side, captured the Grammy for “Best Contemporary Folk Album.” Their third album Why Should The Fire Die? continued their folk-pop innovations, and debuted at Number One on the Independent Album chart when it was released in 2005. The band parted ways in 2007 after their Farewell (For Now) Tour.

Blair Announces Feb/Mar Tour With Say Hi

Brooklyn-based artist Blair has announced new tour dates in support of Say Hi this February and March. The lengthy jaunt will launch February 18th at Neurolux in Boise, ID and wrap up March 30th at The Media Club in Vancouver, BC. The tour includes a hometown show on March 7th at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, as well as two dates during this year's SXSW festival. Blair's debut full-length Die Young was released early last year by Autumn Tone Records.

Die Young is a winsome mix of dreamy, hazy indie pop influenced by Blair's love for '90s FM radio (think Beck and Nirvana) and the records spun on her mother's turntable (like Bob Dylan and Neil Young) while growing up in New Orleans, LA. The album was written - in both her hometown and Los Angeles, CA - and re-recorded over the course of five years. The songs were finally laid to tape in New Orleans using both traditional studios and makeshift home setups, with the help of producer Keith Ferguson and a host of musician friends filling out the parts.

As her airy vocals tell stories of heartache, daydreams and memories, throughout the album Blair shows herself to be a nimble musician and songwriter with an innate sense of sumptuous melody. G. Love Premieres "Fixin' To Die" Video

G. Love premieres the video for title track "Fixin' To Die" featuring Scott and Seth Avett today over at Vevo. Be sure to catch G. G. Love To Release New Album Produced By The Avett Brothers

G. Love's new album, Fixin’ To Die, is set for release on February 22nd on Brushfire Records. Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, and produced by Scott and Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers), this new body of work is arguably G. Love’s most sincere and candid work to date. After a chance meeting in Boston last fall, G. Love and The Avett Brothers forged a friendship and bonded over their love of back road blues.  After performing together onstage and discovering their shared musical heritage, G. Love invited Scott and Seth Avett to not only produce his new album, but perform on it as well.
The result is Fixin’ To Die, a collection of G. Love originals, rearranged traditionals, and a classic cover, many simmering for over a decade, all sharing a common goal: to strip away all pretense and capture the original spirit and sound G. Love has cultivated over his entire career but never fully embraced until now. From the ragged jangle of its opener “Milk & Sugar” and floorboard stomp of Bukka White’sFixin’ To Die,” over the loping lilt of “Home” and longing for “Katie Miss,” through the greasy fried “Get Goin’” and moonshine reverb of “Heaven,” to the hip shake hootenanny in Paul Simon’s infamous kiss off “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” G. Love and The Avetts deliver a life lesson in how to find a song’s sweet spot.
It was an emotional recording session and I was truly blown away by the level of focus, care and passion Scott & Seth brought to it.  It was a tremendously positive and encouraging experience. This is the most inspired I’ve ever felt making a record,” G. Love said.
As Scott Avett says, “There’s a little bit of this record on all the previous G. Love records, you just had to look for it. This is the record we all knew he should make and he could make, but again, he had to open himself to the core to make it. That’s the difference.”
G. Love will tour the U.S. extensively in support of Fixin’ To Die in 2011.

Bob Marley's Wailers Continue His Legacy With New Single To "Keep Them Belly Full"

On a trip to Colombia at the end of last year, legendary reggae group The Wailers gave out hundreds of pairs of shoes to under-privileged children from the money they had raised from foregoing their daily riders.  During their extensive travels that followed, they were often confronted with one of the worst plights, yet one of the easiest problems to solve – hunger.
The Wailers’ leader and musical director Aston “Familyman” Barrett decided to collaborate with the World Food program and the United Stations because he felt that he wanted to make a contribution to help put an end to hunger around the world.  The result of their efforts culminated in a new track called “A Step for Mankind,” which is their first studio song in 16 years.   The song was recorded specifically for Oniric Records’ compilation CD Solution for Dreamers: Season 3 and is available at iTunes with ALL proceeds from the song going towards the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP). The Wailers are now asking for your help.
“A Step for Mankind,” written by Wailers’ vocalist Duane Stephenson, is a call for world unity and strength to support the ongoing struggle against world hunger. The band is joined on the track by new lead singer Koolant, a fresh talent from the heart of St. Thomas known for blazing a positive future for reggae music with his work. The track also introduces Dr Dre protégé Bishop Lamont, an up-and-coming rapper, contributes an unforgettable flow in the track’s breakdown.  Graced by the Wailers’ undeniably distinctive groove., “A Step for Mankind” is a small taste of more music forthcoming from the Wailers, who recently entered the studio in Jamaica to begin work on an album of all-new material.
The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide. The Dodos To Release "Time To Die" This Fall

With a title like Time To Die, you might think the Dodos’ third disc is their ‘mature album,’ a deadly serious undertaking punctuated with string sections and synths. Nice try kid, but you’ve got it all wrong. While indie rock’s go-to guy, Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), hopped behind the boards this time, the Dodos’ wildly-percussive style is still centered around two key elements: the punchy percussion of Logan Kroeber and the Fahey-infused finger-picking of frontman Meric Long. Oh sure, you’ll hear a horn blast here and there, but it’s never enough to distract you from the group’s riffs and rolls.

“I’m glad that we were able to keep things simple on this record,” says Long, “Because when your band gets a little popular, there’s this tendency to say things like, ‘Let’s add an orchestra on this one!” That works for some people, but it would detract from this band.”

Indeed, and as right as Long may be, Time To Die introduces one major addition to the Dodos’ creative core: Keaton Snyder, a 21-year-old music school dropout who plays a mean vibraphone. As Long puts it, “He’s a better musician than Logan and I combined. I don’t even know what’s going on with his music theory ideas half the time.” On a similar note, Snyder—a classically-trained musician—is constantly learning what ‘being in a band’ entails. In fact, he didn’t even know how to react when a chord was yanked during his Dodos debut. “After the show,” says Long, “he was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve never had to plug anything in before.’ It was hilarious.”

All jokes aside, you’d never know Snyder was the Dodos’ third man without looking at the new album’s liner notes. Not because he’s missing in action half the time; he’s just locked in step with Long’s steady-handed strumming and Kroeber’s canon-like beats. That, and Snyder’s actual sound/physical presence isn’t all that different than the visceral elements explored on the Dodos’ previous two albums, 2006’s Beware of the Maniacs and the band’s buzz-stirring breakthrough, 2008’s Visiter.

“The vibraphone is pretty crazy and loud,” says Long, “and if you put it through some effects, you can make it sound like a guitar or synthesizer. It still has that element of something you’re hitting, though, which is central to how Logan and I play our instruments.”

That’s the thing about Time To Die: It expands the Dodos’ Ginsu-sharp sound without smothering it. It’s not the death of everything you adored about the duo; it’s a rebirth, revealing some serious career standouts (the widescreen payoff of “Small Deaths,” the string-and-drum spasms of “Longform,” the delicate/distorted dynamics of Snyder’s “Troll Nacht” parts) along the way.  Which isn’t a surprise when you hear how many months they spent writing the damn thing earlier this year.

“After Visiter, we had a lot of options for which direction to go,” says Long, “But I knew we wanted to make a rock record. Being an acoustic band—primarily, at least—sort of works against this idea, but Phil’s production showcased that side of our band.”
