The Roots Invite Gary Wilson to Play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

We are all in for an exciting treat, as on October 27th, Gary Wilson will be joining Questlove and The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon! While you might think of him as the king of weird, there is no denying that Gary Wilson hits home with his honest, sincere, and sometimes even creepy musings on life and love, set to his special mix of funk, avant-garde jazz, and AM Gold inflected tunes. It's no wonder Gary's fan-base includes folks like Beck ("... My man Gary Wilson rocks the most." - Beck on Odelay's "Where It's At") , Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Stones Throws' Peanut Butter Wolf, and The Roots' Questlove. The collaboration of Gary and Questlove will certainly be something exceptional, particularly given that Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is known for its bizarre sketches.

Gary will also be in New York for CMJ, playing October 19th at Cake Shop, following O'Death.

To celebrate his performance on Late Night, along with his CMJ show, Gary is giving fans an Mp3 of "In The Night", off of his anticipated LP release, Electric Endicott.

Electric Endicott is due out digitally on October 26th, with a street date of November 9th, 2010, on Western Vinyl.

Furthur | Red Rocks | 9/24/2010

Two of the world's greatest road warriors, Phil Lesh & Bobby Weir, made their almost annual stop to the venue the epitomizes everything organic, granola, hippie and The Grateful Dead.  As many venues as both Lesh & Weir have played, every show at Red Rocks is just a little extra special.  Phil while doing his donar rap -- mentioned his love for the amphitheater and has said on at least a few occasions it is his favorite venue in the world.

Outside fans were arriving pretty early filling up the lower south lot and upper north lots first.  The weather couldn't have been any better, and those who live here in Colorado know late September at Red Rocks is precarious, at best.  There was some vending in the lots, though by and large it was fairly quiet.  Grateful Web, however, was hawking our "Make Love Not War" t-shirts in light of election season and America's never-ending political quagmire.  Give one as a gift to your political nemesis!  Email us if you'd like one or want more information. 

My friends went inside early to scope out some good seats.  I stayed back to guard the fort, which really means playing hacky sack with my new neighbor friends, drinking some beers, talking about which run at MSG was the best (I say 1990, hands-down -- another said '87, another said '88 - this continued through our hackin), and having a great time in the gorgeous Red Rocks parking lot.

The band came on around 8pm.  The sound where I was sitting was superb, but considering I was sitting literally over the heads of the soundboard folk, this would make sense.  Futhur is finishing their late summer/early fall tour here in Colorado.  You may wonder how in the world does a 70 year old another 62 year old just continue to tour -- but I must tell you I thought both Bobby and Phil both looked pretty well-rested and enthused on stage last night, which has not always seen the case with Weir during the past few years.  But Bobby seemed more engaged than I have seen him in a while, yet still giving John plenty of space to roam.  Furthur shows for me are pretty tame experiences, but I did find a few moments last night when John really opened things up and hit some pretty nice peaks, particularly in 'Fire on the Mountain,' which was more than apropos considering the recent fires in the near-bye foothills.    

I think Chimenti is a fine piano player, but personally I’d prefer more Hammond organ stuff and less piano. Furthur is mellow enough already, which is why I really think they would benefit more from a big Brent-esque organ sound more than all the piano playing.  Just my 2cents – with that said,  I would be a very happy camper if I could play piano as well as Jeff, so nothing at all personal toward him.  Joe Russo, on the other hand, is a groove machine.  This guy is really great and impresses me more each time.

The Dresden Dolls Announce First Tour in 3 Years

After a long hiatus, The Dresden Dolls are thrilled to announce their first live tour in 3 years! The pioneering and influential "punk cabaret" duo comprised of Amanda Palmer (piano, vocals) and Brian Viglione (drums, guitar, bass) will be kicking off a few weeks of dates starting on Halloween at Irving Plaza in NYC. The date marks the exact 10th anniversary of the birth of the band (Viglione met Palmer on Halloween night of 2000, at an art/salon party at Palmer's house, at which she was playing her solo songs on piano.) "Amanda's songwriting was so brilliant and raw, I couldn't have designed a more perfectly suited counterpart. I knew then I'd found my musical accomplice.", says Viglione. They will also make a stop in New Orleans for a special gulf oil spill relief-benefit for BTNEP, an organization that is working to preserve, protect, and restore the Barataria and Terrebonne estuaries of Louisiana.

Since The Dolls' last performance (which was at Rock The Vote in DC on the Inauguration Day of President Obama), Palmer has been tirelessly busy building her solo career and online empire, centered around the 2008 release of her Ben Folds-Produced solo album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer". The album was accompanied by a hardback-book of the same name and included a collection of dead photographs of Palmer and short stores by author Neil Gaiman (to whom Palmer recently became engaged). Palmer also recently released a donation-based Radiohead covers ukulele EP titled "Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele", setting the tech community abuzz about how a donation-based model can earn a mid-level artist a living wage.  Before they embark on tour, Palmer will be starring as the Emcee in the American Repertory Theater’s production of Kander & Ebb's dark weimar musical "Cabaret". Meanwhile, drummer/producer and talented musical jack-of-all-trades Brian Viglione has appeared on 30 albums since 2008, most notably, Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I–IV". Viglione's latest hard-hitting album, "Face Of The Sun", which he produced and co-wrote, is available digitally via Bandcamp and will be featured on his new website , www.brianviglione.com. Amidst the busy recording and teaching schedule, he's toured internationally with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Martin Bisi, Botanica, and The Cliks.  "A great strength of the band has always been that we've always given each other time to explore creative areas outside The Dresden Dolls, then bring what we've learned back to the table. Our love for the music and playing together is mirrored by the continual support of our fans, and we're more than ready to deliver the goods to them."

The current wave of theatrical artists are citing The Dolls and their flamboyant emotional and theatrical antics as an inspiration, from up-and-coming theatrical-pop artist and Dolls’ fan Marina & The Diamonds to Lady Gaga (who lists The Dresden Dolls as an influence on her MySpace).

"It's been really inspiring to see an evolution towards theatrical freedom among indie bands over the last ten years", says Palmer. "When we were starting out in 2000, we were surrounded by the likes of The Vines and The Strokes. People often wrote us off as a gimmick because of our weird theatrical bent. Now we're surrounded by comrades...Antony, The Scissor Sisters, The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, CocoRosie, the list goes on and on. People aren't as afraid take risks onstage. It's inspiring, and I'm proud we've played our little part in the continuum of empowered freaky people."

Phish: Coral Sky Amphitheater (audio & video!)

On October 19th, JEMP Records will release Coral Sky, a 2-DVD set capturing Phish’s November 2, 1996 performance at Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL. The complete, uncut concert was created from archival videotapes of the multi-camera lawn screen feed and the audio was mixed from multi-track masters in stereo PCM and 5.1 surround.

Amid the swaying palms and soft breezes of South Florida, the two-and-a-half hour plus concert showcased some of the most unique and compelling playing of the band’s career, including a transcendent pairing of “Crosseyed And Painless” and “Run Like An Antelope.” Santana’s Karl Perazzo was featured on percussion throughout the show. Perazzo, who had become acquainted with the band members during their 1992 and 1996 summer tours with Santana, added polyrhythms that explored new space within Phish's music in this deeply experimental show. Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks sat in for the encore, “Funky Bitch.”

EOTO Announces Fall Tour Spanning Both Coasts

Consummate road dogs EOTO just announced a jam-packed fall tour with headlining dates spanning both coasts before topping off a wildly successful 2010. The 30+ day tour will kick off on September 21st featuring 11 dates with DJ's MiMOSA and MartyParty on the west coast and then beginning in October the duo will fly solo in the Mid-West before heading east for the remainder of the winter.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of this project from drummers Michael Travis and Jason Hann. Born out of their shared love of electronic dance music, EOTO's M.O. is to take the free-wheeling party vibe of a DJ set to the next level by using organic instruments, innovative performance technology, and uncharted musical exploration. Live drums, guitars, and keys, and vocals are mixed, remixed, and sampled on the fly using cutting-edge programs. This is all done without a script, and without a net.

Hann plays a hyper EQ'd drumkit, chock full of multi-touch screens and MIDI controllers, and throws a number of effects on his otherworldly vocal styles. Travis takes on subsonic frequencies, generating the band's crushing low end with analog, digital, and software synthesizers, occasionally picking up guitar or a bass guitar and showing off his proficiency with instruments of all shapes and sizes.

Hann, has been playing percussion professionally since the age of 12. Years of collaborating, touring, and recording with the likes of Youssou N'Dour, Isaac Hayes, Dr. Dre, Loreena McKinnett, SCI, and a slew of other established artists running the gamut from Latin jazz to R 'n' B and soul allows him to move fluidly between styles. Adding to this is his depth in African and Latin drumming traditions, allowing the futuristic EOTO sound to keep itself rooted in the past.

For the last 16 years, Travis has been the drumming octopus in SCI. He morphs roles to melodic multi-instrumentalist in EOTO, providing the raw basslines and harmonic tapestry that fill out the soundscape of the duo. Both Hann and Travis have the chops and stamina for physically demanding, EOTO improvised sets, which have been known to go upwards of 4 straight hours.

"When we're playing live for 3 hours a night, it's like playing tribal drums in a ceremony," Hann explains. "I'm looking at one person at a time out there, and thinking "what can I do to make you dance?"

Hann and Travis play almost 200 shows a year, together, EOTO has played more than seven hundred unique showcases in 48 different states in the five years since the project's inception. Each set is recorded and released (www.livedownloads.com) so fans can capture their unique EOTO dance throwdown, reliving the experience again and again.

Tori Amos "Live from the Artists Den" DVD Released July 13

On July 13, 2010 Artists Den Records will release the Limited Edition DVD “Tori Amos: Live from the Artists Den,” featuring a private solo performance by the Grammy-nominated artist for just 100 fans in the Veterans Room of New York’s historic Park Avenue Armory. The DVD’s release coincides will the nationwide premiere of the second season of “Live from the Artists Den,” the hit public television series spotlighting extraordinary artists performing in extraordinary settings, which features Amos’s concert in addition to shows by Ringo Starr with Ben Harper, Corinne Bailey Rae, David Gray, and others.  For local listings, visit TheArtistsDen.com

The DVD’s special features include two songs not included in the televised broadcast, a 20-minute interview with music journalist Alan Light, a tour of the Veterans Room with Amos, and a 34-page scrapbook containing behind-the-scenes photos and a history of the historic venue.


Tori Amos is one of the most influential and respected artists of the modern era.  The double-digit Grammy nominee has recorded 11 acclaimed studio albums – and gone platinum nearly 20 times – since emerging in the early ’90s.

Amos closed 2009 with a special solo show for 100 fans in New York City’s Park Avenue Armory, an immense historical landmark built in the late 19th century as both a military facility and a social club.  Described as “Greek, Moresque, and Celtic with a dash of the Egyptian, the Persian, and the Japanese,” the Armory’s ornate Veterans Room provided a fitting setting for one of the most eclectic and culturally curious artists in music today.

Of playing the unique room, Amos said, “Let’s face it: when you’re playing in a room that doesn’t have a lot of personality, then you have to bring everything yourself.  It’s sort of like a bad blind date—you hope the food’s good, and if the waitress is entertaining, you’ll make it through.  But when you have a magical place, then all of a sudden it’s a conversation, and you could be falling in love on your first date.”

The DVD features both hits and rare fan favorites spanning Amos’ catalogue, from her breakthrough 1991 debut “Little Earthquakes” to her acclaimed 2009 album “Abnormally Attracted to Sin.”

The “Live from the Artists Den: Season 2” compilation album is currently available on iTunes and features “Ruby Through the Looking Glass,” a rare song Amos played to open this special show.

Denver-Based Guitarist Grant Gordy To Release Debut Album May 11

Grant Gordy, the Denver-based guitar player whose lifelong study of music, from Bill Evans to The Beatles and beyond, has informed his own writing and arranging, will release his self-titled debut album on May 11.

“[He] belongs to the new elite family of American acoustic practitioners who are pushing the ever-expanding envelope of a musical frontier … Bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, classical and even ‘dawg’ are all audible influences in Grant’s musical vision,” says David “Dawg” Grisman, whose David Grisman Quintet Gordy subbed in and would ultimately join as guitarist. “[His] guitar stylings offer a rare blend of flat-picking virtuosity, jazz exploration and classical sensibility …”

“Pterodactyl,” “Grapes” and “Lila” are just three of the compositions on the new CD, which also includes Gordy’s “Blues to Dawg” that he invited Grisman to contribute his signature mandolin playing to. Each song in the collection exemplifies Gordy’s spirit of adventure and sense of self.

Gordy describes himself: “At heart, I'm really an improviser; that's what very first drew me to playing music — the idea that you can make things up as you go along — but I'm also very interested in composition. I like the idea of a group of musicians having as much room and freedom to explore and improvise as they want, but within a context of a compelling arrangement that can be exciting for, and draws in, the listener.”

A perverse product of the Arizona desert, Bob Log III has been diligently travelling the globe since 1996, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dexterous limbs and digits, this super star sonic showman has to be seen to be believed.

Clad in his cannonball man, extra tight jumpsuit and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum, stomping his homemade foot cymbal and playing slide on an old archtop guitar.

Teddy Charles Quartet at KItano | NYC

Teddy Charles is considered to be one of the great jazz vibraphonists and composers of all time, playing with such jazz legends as Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. As a student at Julliard in the mid 40s, he haunted New York's jazz clubs, occasionally sitting in with the bands on vibes or piano. His break came unexpectedly one night when he was asked to sit in on piano with Coleman Hawkin's band for the overdue Thelonious Monk. Soon after, Charles began to appear regularly with the top jazz groups of the day, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Buddy De Franco, playing alongside and writing for such jazz stars as Coltrane, Parker, Max Roach and Miles Davis. Recently appeared with Max Roach, David Amram, Lee Konitz. In the early 1950s he began leading his own groups, composing, producing and recording original works such as No More Nights, Blues Become Elektra and Word from Bird.

HOWARD LEVY HARMONICA SCHOOL

The Howard Levy Harmonica School online has appreciatively received a warm and enthusiastic response from the harmonica playing community and student base from around the world.  The Howard Levy Harmonica School, an online video-exchange-based learning site for harmonica players created by ArtistWorks, is led by Howard Levy, arguably the world’s most prominent harmonica master. The nature of this innovative school is its appeal to players from novice to virtuoso. HLHS students learn by video exchange with Howard Levy, submitting clips of their playing to Howard for his review. Howard then provides a personalized video response to the student offering guidance on mastering the lesson. The exchange between teacher and student are permanently recorded and paired on the site for the entire Harmonica School to learn from, and breaks new ground in learning a musical instrument online.
