GARAGE A TROIS Announce New Album & Tour

On April 12, Garage A Trois will release Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil via Royal Potato Family. Aptly described by photographer John Margaretten as "a transformative, punkalectic, pornographic seizure of sight and sound," the modern day post rock/freak jazz supergroup will support the album with west and east coast tour dates in April and May. Garage A Trois, a force greater than the sum of its colossal parts, is comprised of Seattle-based saxophonics master Skerik, Brooklyn sound-sculptor/keysman Marco Benevento, Texas-born punk rock vibraphone hero Mike Dillon and New Orleans funky drummer/beat scientist Stanton Moore.

Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil follows Garage A Trois' 2009 release, Power Patriot (the band’s debut with Benevento replacing original member Charlie Hunter). In the words of Stanton Moore, "the band set out to capture the highly flammable, rock-driven, avant pop album we all knew we were capable of making." Recorded at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, LA (where masterpieces by The Neville Brothers, Stevie Wonder and The Wild Magnolias have been cut) with revered engineer/producer Randall Dunn (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Sun City Girls), Always Be Happy, But Stay Evil is indeed the finest representation yet of the band's sinewy, fourth-dimensional, polychromatic songwriting. It's sure to fuel the fire for a growing legion of fans amassing around the most dangerous instrumental band on the scene today.

Old 97's at the Boulder Theater

Old 97’s make their triumphant return on October 12th with The Grand Theater Volume One, their eighth studio album, from New West Records.  The band, who Rolling Stone says have “evolved…into master-class rock & roll songwriters,” recorder over two dozen brand new songs during the studio sessions and will be releasing a second volume in 2011.  The 12 song album was once again produced by Salim Nourallah (the band’s previous release, Blame It On Gravity) and engineered by Jim Vollentine (Spoon).  Legendary for their blistering live performances, the Old 97’s spent a week of pre-production recording the new songs completely live at the nearly 100-year old (and reportedly haunted) Dallas venue Sons of Hermann Hall.  The band set up on stage like they normally do during concerts, so it was instantly conducive to whether or not certain new songs would translate well in a live atmosphere.  After deciding what new songs make made the cut for proper recording, the band moved the production to Treefort Studios in Austin, TX.  Basic tracks for these studio sessions were recorded mostly live, resulting in an album that is as vibrant, immediate and sweat drenched as their praised live show.  Frontman Rhett Miller stated, “The Old 97’s have hit a great stride, found our second wind.  I feel like we found the secret to capturing the live energy people rave about after they see us play.”

The Grand Theatre Volume One was predominantly written during Rhett Miller’s 2009 solo tour abroad.  The lyrics are filled with character studies while the sound – expertly rounded out by band members Murry Hammond, Ken Bethea and Philip Peeples – is Garage-Rock=meets-60’s-British Invasion without abandoning the classic 97’s sound.  Rhett Miller offered, “The Grand Theatre centers around a suite of songs I wrote during a month-long tour of England, Ireland and Scandanavia.  Opening for the great Steve Earle meant watching a master Texas songwriter at work and I soaked up these strange surroundings and turned them into songs.  I was writing at a furious cli in the midst of the most intense kinds of planes, trains and automobiles.  I can see an epistolary strain running through the songs.  All my years of Anglophillia make these fell like a collection of love letters, or a collection of letters home.  I wrote the title track in the dressing room of Leeds’ Grand Theatre.”

The album’s first single, “Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)” is an exuberant rocker.  “Like a lot of songs on The Grand Theatre, “Every Night…” is more complicated than it first appears.  The speaker has some issues.  What can I say?  The Old 97’s have been making anger and depression sound fun since 1993” said Miller. “Champaign, Illinois” re-imagines Bob Dylan’s classic Highway 61 Revisited track, “Desolation Row” with brand new lyrics by Rhett Miller.  Miller said, “The one song on the record that dates further back is ‘Champaign, Illinois.’  A few years ago, during a long, late-night drive through Southern Illinois, I kept myself awake by rewriting the lyrics to ‘Desolation Row.’  I played it around live a little, but never recorded it for fear of repercussions from Dylan’s legal team.  When the 97’s were putting this record together, we kept bringing “Champaign” up with a sort of bittersweet longing, sad that we would never be able to use it.  Finally, it occurred to me, “Why not?”  Through a series of phone calls, Dylan’s manager approached the legend with a live recording of the tune from the old Café Largo in Hollywood.  I couldn’t believe it when word came back through the channels that Dylan liked the tune but wanted to read they lyrics.  I never typed faster.  Apparently, Dylan liked it enough that, not only did he approve the release, but he wanted to split the publishing 50/50 with the band.  A co-write with Bob Dylan, even in absentia, is an enormous honor.  What a cool dude.”

An Old 97’s record would not be complete without songs from bassist Murry Hammond.  He has two strong contributions on The Grand Theatre Volume One, “You Smoke Too Much” and “You Were Born To Be In A Battle.”  Like Miller’s songs, Hammond has a highly literate style yet harkens back to an older school of writing, which creates a balance on the record.  Speaking of the record, Hammond stated “I’m a big 60s garage punk fan, and my favorite moments on this record have a thick vibe in that direction…while I’m proud of my stab at 60s Johnny Cash in ‘Born To Be In a Battle.’ I’m just as thrilled as the way the bass generally bubbles all over the place and the background and harmony vocals swim in the old plate reverb.  It gives me that same smile I get listening to my heroes the Zombies, Chocolate Watchband, Syd Barrett, etc.  I’m proud of how the band can be garage and raw but very Technicolor at the same time.  This is one of my top favorite records of ours.”

Chris Massey's The Nue Jazz Project Upcoming Appearances

Chris Massey is following his ambition of making a name for himself as a new breed of young talented player in the world of jazz. Growing up in small town Uniontown, Ohio where he picked up his first pair of drumsticks a the age of 9 he took his first steps into his musical career as a Jazz Performance major at Youngstown State University in 2000.

Among performing with such modern legends such as Donald Harrison Jr., Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Chris is also an accomplished composer and arranger. Gaining inspiration from notable drummer-composers such as Brian Blade and Jeff "Tain" Watts; Chris has began composing his first works in early 2001. Chris also has been teaching lessons of all age varieties from the skill ranges of beginner to advanced college for over a decade.


Chris above all else is a modern drummer taught in the old tradition of swing; his ethos is to "put his sound" underneath a player and let the fire start to spread. He is currently residing in the New York City area and performing with/leading his modern jazz group "The Nue Jazz Project". He has performed in many venues across the city such as Smoke, Cleopatra's Needle, Smalls, Fat Cat, 55bar, The Garage, The Iridium and many others. He currently finished recording his debut album entitled "Vibrainium" due to be released in Fall 2010

Parlovr Unveil Cover Art & Tracklisting / East Coast Tour To Be Announced Soon

Meet Parlovr (pretend the V is a U when you say it). Over the last few years, these three Montrealers have been bringing their manic melee of indie pop to the musically-curious masses. They’ve already amassed plenty of attention from tasters and tastemakers alike via their blissfully bizarre tracks and seizure-inducing live shows; however, after recently signing onto the Dine Alone Records roster, the band is ready to make some serious noise in the new decade – in more ways than one…
Initially formed in a Mile-End loft during the winter of 2006 by guitarist/vocalist Louis David Jackson and keyboardist/vocalist Alex Cooper, the current incarnation of Parlovr came about in 2007 when drummer Jeremy MacCuish entered the fold – a catalyst to the fusion of the foiling songwriting styles of the original two. Since, the band has taken off on its own sonic tangent, appropriately dubbed “sloppy pop” in the past; stripped down but salacious and spastic.
The music is about as diverse as the city that spawned it – an interweaving of styles that takes on a shape and shimmer of its own. Raw and reverb-soaked, their independently-released, self-titled debut dropped in late 2008, recorded and produced by Martin Horn at Digital Bird Studios.
The songs found therein are rooted in dramatic dynamics not unlike those that exist between Cooper and Jackson’s foiling songwriting styles – quiet and loud; screams and whispers; sing-alongs and spacey instrumentals; warm low-end and crisp, shimmering leads; short pop jabs and extended epics. You get the idea, right? It’s quirky, it’s catchy, and while it’s full of familiar throwbacks to ‘60s pop, ‘80s post-punk, and ‘90s garage, it’s also refreshing.
Since its release, the album has garnered some great ink in pretty much every well-respected left-of-centre publication here in Canada – Hero Hill, Chartattack, and Hour among them. Even some from the south are taking notice, with Spin magazine calling the band one of the “5 to watch” out of Montreal (it’s pretty much the new Seattle) and The New York Times sharing kind words about their live show. It’s obvious the bandwagon is starting to fill up, and everybody on it is dancing.
Parlovr has spent time bringing their melodies on the road, having toured extensively throughout Canada, New York, France and Europe alongside indie pop peers like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.
With all of the pieces in place, Parlovr seems set to bring their melodic mayhem to a widespread populace for the new decade.
It’s 2010, and it’s finally cool to say you listen to Parlovr music.

Garage A Trois | New Album, Tour Dates

Garage A Trois is a collaboration between four of the most visionary improvisers of the time: Skerik on saxophones, Mike Dillon on vibes, Marco Benevento on keyboards and Stanton Moore on drums. And while improvisation is at the heart of what this quartet has built its reputation on at their legendary New Orleans Jazzfest sets and rare, but in demand, club tours, it's the intricate sonic collages, tightly orchestrated arrangements and positively modern approach to instrumental songwriting that's at the heart of their latest album, Power Patriot.  Set for release October 27 by Brooklyn-based label The Royal Potato Family, Garage A Trois will play select tour dates to support the new recording in November and December.
