Truth & Salvage Co. Singer Arrested & Jailed...In His Hotel Room?

Tim Jones, one of the four singers/songwriters of the musical group Truth & Salvage Company, was shaken awake and ripped out of bed at the Marriott Hotel by Visalia Police while asleep in his hotel room.  Jones was subsequently handcuffed, taken to jail and cited for trespassing and resisting arrest in his own hotel room.

Truth & Salvage Co. toured with The Black Crowes throughout 2009 and is currently on tour in support of their debut album scheduled for release May 25, 2010.  While on a recent road trip to Visalia, California, the band finished their show at the Cellar Door and returned to the Marriott Hotel in Visalia at approximately 1 AM.   Two Visalia Police officers and a Marriott security guard entered Jones' room about an hour later and arrested Jones.  According to sources close to the band, the Visalia Police officers unsuccessfully attempted to awake and arrest Walker Young, another Truth & Salvage Co. singer who was sharing the room with Jones.

Instead of spending the night in his hotel room, Tim Jones spent the night in a Visalia jail cell.  He was finally released at noon the following day.

Jones was set to be arraigned in the Tulare County Superior Court on March 9, 2010. Legal representatives of the band arrived at the courthouse to answer for Jones, only to find that the District Attorney’s office had not filed any charges against Jones at the time of the arraignment. To date, the Visalia Police have refused to release the police incident report to the Jordan Law Group who serve as the Truth & Salvage Co. legal team.

A source close to the band said, "It's an abuse of authority for police and hotel security to enter a person's hotel room without a warrant, wake them out of a sound sleep, cite them for trespassing and then haul them off to spend the night in jail."

Jones did not have any outstanding warrants; he wasn’t suspected of, nor accused of, any crime prior to being violated by the Visalia Police and Marriott Security.  He subsequently received medical treatment for injuries suffered during the arrest.  Jones and his fellow band members, intend to aggressively pursue their legal rights.

Jones recently filed a claim for damages with the City of Visalia.

Phish's WaterWheel Foundation/Mimi Fishman Foundation Auction

For the second time in as many years, the WaterWheel Foundation and the Mimi Fishman Foundation have teamed together to create a very exciting on-line charity auction. All proceeds from the auction will mutually benefit the Foundations, both of which have strong ties to the band Phish. The WaterWheel Foundation was created by Phish in 1997 to oversee the band’s various charitable activities.

The Mimi Fishman Foundation was established in1999 by Miriam "Mimi" Fishman (the late mother of Phish drummer Jon Fishman) and David Shulman, as a vehicle to raise funds for various charities important to Mimi.

The on-line auction is currently live with the bidding coming to close on Tuesday, May 25. The auction consists of 13 ticket/memorabilia packages, each representing a tour stop on the 1st leg of the Phish 2010 Summer Tour.

In addition to a pair of reserved tickets per show, the additional items include band signed posters by Phish famed poster artist Jim Pollock, rare David Welker posters, Jon Fishman signed drumsticks, and more.

Kinetix Announces New Album And Summer Tour Appearances

Denver, Colorado rockers Kinetix continue to build upon their DIY success of the previous five years, having spent 2009 logging more than 10,000+ miles criss-crossing the country setting concert hall and music festival audiences on fire with their soul-powered rock and roll. Now in 2010, the band has rededicated themselves to the studio and have produced their finest album to date. Uniting soaring vocal harmonies, muscular guitar riffs, deep bass, R&B flavored electronic organ drenched in reverb, a tireless work ethic and extreme attention to detail on the production of both their new album and live shows, Kinetix is set to continue assembling an army of intensely loyal fans from coast to coast.

With a band name derived in part from motion and energy, Kinetix's rise from their humble Denver roots into a popular nationally touring band has been nothing short of spectacular. Formed by a group of college buddies at Lamont School of Music at Denver University, Kinetix was originally merely a vehicle to blow off steam and play music at weekend hangouts. The new album builds upon the band's reputation as a live tour de force, but now heralds the rock quintet as studio musicians capable of creating an album worthy and almost certainly destined for mainstream radio play. Early listens of the new Kinetix album have garnered praise among fans and industry insiders alike as a more mature continuation of the keyboard and guitar driven sound Kinetix has always been known for.

Keller Williams Announces "Keller on Your Couch"; new album out May 25

Keller Williams releases his first-ever all-covers collection, amusingly titled Thief, on May 25, 2010. Recorded with the Keels—husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny KeelThief includes songs originally written and recorded by as wildly diverse an assemblage as anyone’s ever likely to dream up.

Now, with the announcement of his “Keller On Your Couch” contest, Keller and the Keels are on the lam, and they have no idea where they'll end up. The reward for assisting in their capture is a 90 minute private acoustic performance by Keller and The Keels in the winner's living room for them and up to 49 of their friends.

Jazz Guitarist Jake Hertzog tours Midwest

It’s almost safe to say that this sounds like nothing you’ve heard before.  To say that Hertzog is a shredder that can’t be stopped is just to get the conversation started.  Playing somewhere between jazz and rock, this is what “Metal Machine Music”  might have sounded like if Lou Reed had intended it to be something more than a pile of shit to get him out of his contract.  Wanna hear young Al DiMeola on speed?  What else can I say?  This is the guitar record you play when you absolutely, positively need to have your mind melted.  Yngwie Malmsteen and Charlie Christian rolled into one, all this kid has to do is not run so fast that he trips over himself and the world will be his oyster.  Hot stuff for shredder ears.

Guitar Player Magazine is calling him "…the blazing wunderkind." The Boston Phoenix has declared him "...the WOW! factor." Award-winning jazz guitarist and composer, Jake Hertzog, is making it big in New York City. Jake’s second studio album, Patterns, just released this April 2010, is already Guitar Player Magazine’s Editor’s Pick. Jake is a monthly contributor to GP Magazine’s ‘Lessons’ section under the alias Hey Jazz Guy and has been coined as the Jazz ambassador to the non-jazz world.

Jake’s debut album, Chromatosphere (2009), brought him critical acclaim including a five page interview in Guitar Player Magazine (June 2009) highlighting his unique technique and approach to modern jazz guitar. Both albums, recorded and produced by Grammy Award-winner, Joshua Paul Thompson.

Furthermore, he stands as musical director and lead guitarist for Nickelodeon's The Naked Brothers Band stars, Nat and Alex Wolff. They have concluded two national tours and have performed on national television shows including Good Morning America, The View, Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, The Today Show and many others.

Past achievements include winning the Grand Prize in 2006 for the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition in Switzerland. In the festivals 44-year history, he holds title at 20 years old as the youngest ever prize winner. He was invited back in 2007 to showcase his original music in the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jake is an Alum of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and recipient of several performance scholarships.

The Mynabirds Announce Spring Tour, Album in Stores Now

With this week’s release of her debut album as The Mynabirds, Laura Burhenn has officially turned the page from her role as one half of Georgie James.  Following The Mynabirds’ acclaimed first single “Numbers Don’t Lie,” Laura is giving another taste of What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood (Saddle Creek) with the bouncy, kiss-off anthem “Let The Record Go.”  Download the track HERE and if you haven’t heard “Numbers” yet you can check it out HERE.  For the next week you can also stream the full album HERE on Saddle Creek’s website.  Catch Laura and her band live when they kick off their spring tour on April 30th, which includes dates opening for Josh Ritter.

What We Lose draws from the gospel, old soul, and rock n roll that Burhenn was raised on, and many of the lyrics are inspired by a Zen-like view of the themes of loss and recovery.  With a surprisingly husky voice, considering her small stature, Burhenn adorns her words with a rich and emotive tone.  In the studio, singer-songwriter/producer Richard Swift helped carry out Burhenn’s vision, resulting in an album packed with both subtle detail and immediate charm.

The album also includes some notable guest artists.  Tom Hnatow (These United States) played pedal steel, Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) arranged the horns on the album and backing vocals were provided by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) and engineer/producer AJ Mogis (Monsters of Folk, Cursive, Tilly and The Wall).

Dierks Bentley Takes The Tonight Show "Up On The Ridge"

Award winning singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley will debut the lead and title track from his forthcoming bluegrass-influenced album UP ON THE RIDGE on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, tonight,  Tues., April 27.  The track, written by Bentley and Angelo Petraglia, features Petraglia on acoustic guitar, Sam Bush on slide mandolin and background vocals by Alison Krauss.

“This is the most fun I’ve ever had making music,” says Bentley.  “The songs, the production, the collaborations...everything came together so organically and naturally...it’s been a blast.   Now, we’ve got tv offers and a tour...I feel the same excitement and nervousness I felt when we were getting ready to release my first album 6 years ago!”

As anticipation builds for the artistically-daring collection, music critics are stirring with a first taste of the June 8, 2010 release.  CMT’s Chet Flippo predicts it will be a “career landmark” for Bentley, and MusicRow magazine is already calling it “the first masterpiece country album of 2010.”

National Jazz Museum in Harlem 2010 May Schedule

We invite you to join us at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem as we venture to the very birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, for a month-long focus on the Crescent City of today.

We take our Jazz for Curious Listeners theme, “Tuning into Tremé,” as an allusion to the critically acclaimed new HBO series, which itself is named after one of the oldest black neighborhoods in the United States. Curated by Larry Blumenfeld of the Wall Street Journal, this journey will encompass the gumbo of cultures and musics that make New Orleans so special while pointing the way to its post-Katrina future. The Saturday Panel on New Orleans will extend and elaborate this critical inquiry.

Our flagship discussion series, Harlem Speaks, begins with Harlem resident and master tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, and ends with the veteran vibraphonist David Samuels, whose eclectic musical tastes will add spice to the conversation. Trumpet man Randy Sandke’s latest book is making waves in as a fresh and at times controversial look at race and economics in jazz history; he’ll share the whys and hows at Jazz for Curious Readers.

As always, we never just give you all talk and no play, so the instrumentalists will have their say on stage, as pianist Steven Schoenberg performs a solo concert for Harlem in the Himalayas and the NJMH All Stars blow their horns for dancers at Jazz at the Dwyer.

Trumpeter/author Randy Sandke, author of Where the Light and the Dark Folks Meet: Race and the Mythology, Politics and Business of Jazz (Scarecrow Press, 2010), has performed at festivals, clubs, and concerts around the world and has recorded over twenty albums as a leader as well.

As a composer, Sandke has had pieces performed at Carnegie Hall, the 92nd St. YMCA, and Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center. The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band performed six of his suites.

Tonight’s focus, however, is on Sandke’s literary achievement and insights.

Randy Sandke’s previous book, Harmony for a New Millennium, details a method of exploring non-tonal harmony in the context of both composition and improvisation. He has also written scholarly articles on jazz history for the Oxford Companion to Jazz and the Rutgers University Annual Review of Jazz Studies.

In his recently published work (see above) Sandke conjoins his experience as a working musician with his scholarship to produce a work that debunks many of the hoary myths surrounding the role of race in jazz history. In what promises to be an intriguing (and perhaps controversial) discussion, Sandke will explain his thesis and why he was inspired to write Where the Light and the Dark Folks Meet: Race and the Mythology, Politics and Business of Jazz.

Set in New Orleans, David Simon's new HBO series “Treme” picks up three months after the floods that resulted from the levee failures after Hurricane Katrina. Culture, which in New Orleans means a tight braid of music, cuisine, dance, visual art, and street life, is the primary focus of the series, as indeed it was and is the defining element of the city's identity and its recovery. Familiar faces from Simon's actors' troupe show up as fictional cultural fixtures: Wendell Pierce (detective Bunk Moreland on The Wire) plays Antoine Batiste, a trombonist we first encounter subbing with the real-life Rebirth Brass Band. Clarke Peters (detective Lester Freamon on The Wire) plays the Mardi Gras Indian Chief Albert Lambreaux, chanting out some of his best lines while beating a tambourine. The true-life heroes of New Orleans jazz figure prominently too: In addition to Rebirth, the list of musicians making cameo appearances, often in performance, includes trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, saxophonist Donald Harrison, and Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, and drummer Bob French.

These 90-minute conversations, led by writer Larry Blumenfeld, who has written extensively about New Orleans since the flood, will use the HBO series to frame a wide-ranging consideration of jazz culture in New Orleans and its role in recovery. Excerpts from the show will be screened, and special guests-musicians, participants in the series, and scholars-will join in the discussion.

In Sidney Bechet's memoir, Treat It Gentle, the late, great clarinetist's real grandfather is supplanted by Omar, a fictional figure based on a folk tale, all the better to convey stirring truths about the true origins of New Orleans jazz. Real and imagined intermingle pointedly in New Orleans, in all walks of life. What can the fiction of “Treme”-which is named for the “Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, long a hothouse for jazz culture-tell is about the city's real culture before and since the flood?

In our first session we will see the manner in which “Treme” plugs directly into an indigenous culture that has served as a lifeline for a New Orleans still inching toward recovery. That lifeline is extended principally by traditional jazz and brass-band musicians; the Social Aid & Pleasure Club members that mount Sunday parades; and-perhaps the most mysterious and essential group of all-Mardi Gras Indians, who dress in elaborate feathered and beaded suits four times a year. We'll consider the roots, traditions and depictions of these culture-bearers and their connections to familiar music.

Harlem resident Wayne Escoffery is one of the most talented rising stars and in-demand sidemen on tenor saxophone in jazz. Born in London, Escoffery grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where he sang in a renowned local boy’s choir and began taking sax lessons. At 16 he attended JazzMobile in Harlem, and by his senior year in secondary school had met Jackie McLean at The Artist’s Collective in Hartford.
McLean gave Wayne a full scholarship to attend The Hartt School, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance, and became known as one of McLean's prize pupils. He went on to attend and graduate from The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at The New England Conservatory in Boston with a Masters degree.

Since then, he has performed with a plethora of internationally respected musicians and has become known for his beautiful sound, impressive technique and versatility. As well as performing with his quartet, his group Veneration and a collaborative group with vocalist (and wife) Carolyn Leonhart, Wayne Escoffery currently performs locally and tours internationally with Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet, The Tom Harrell Quintet, and The Mingus Big Band/Orchestra/Dynasty.

Following the current HBO series, we note that perhaps more so than in any other American city, New Orleans represents the blending of African rhythms and forms with European harmonies and musical sensibility to transform our ideas about music and seed ongoing innovation. Looking at that lineage-from Congo Square to Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino to the Nevilles, Wynton Marsalis to Lil Wayne-and as portrayed in the series, Larry Blumenfeld and our live audience will consider what that mixture means.

Veteran Dave Samuels is widely recognized for his fresh new sound and creative approach to both the vibraphone and marimba. Although he’s best known for work with his current ensemble, The Caribbean Jazz Project as well as for his long tenure with Spyro Gyra, Samuels has also worked with a broad scope of artists ranging from Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Carla Bley and Pat Metheny to the Yellowjackets, Bruce Hornsby, and Frank Zappa.

Samuels has been performing and recording with his group The Caribbean Jazz Project for over a decade; their most recent CD, Afro Bop Alliance, garnered a Latin Grammy and was also nominated for a Grammy. Some of his other recording projects include Remembrances, a percussion recording that features a commissioned marimba concerto for chamber orchestra and soloist composed by Jeff Beal, and Double Image—the vibe-marimba duo consisting of Dave Samuels & David Friedman—which is celebrating thirty years of performances. Double Image performs music which spans many styles - from jazz standards and original compositions to through-composed pieces and spontaneous improvisations, demonstrating Samuels deep versatility and spirit of collaboration.

In addition to his playing, Samuels is a respected educator and author and some of his new works can be found at MalletWorks.com and JazzBooks.com. Samuels has been voted “Best Vibes Player” in both Jazziz and Modern Drummer magazines, and was recently featured on the online jazz television show, Jazz it Up!

Last month, Jazz at the Dwyer featured a romping Caribbean band; this month we’ll swing you into good health with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem All Star Big Band! The famed Big Band Swing era was full of dance bands that stomped and grooved with jitterbugging teens and adults following their every move. Tonight’s show is much more than nostalgia, it’s reclamation of an essential part of the dynamic that made jazz popular. Bring your dancing shoes!

Weeks into the current HBO series that observes a city built on culture must be rebuilt with culture. That's precisely what is happening in New Orleans. How is this happening? Who are the artists and activists and organizations behind this cultural rebirth? And what can we learn from this experience about the role of culture in our lives and the needs of every American city?

Larry Blumenfeld, curator of this four-part JCL series on New Orleans, writes about music and culture for The Wall Street Journal, Village Voice and many other publications, and is editor-at-large of Jazziz magazine. He is a former Katrina Media Fellow with the Open Society Institute, researching cultural recovery in New Orleans.

Railroad Earth: New Album, New Bassist - On TOUR

After celebrating the end of their first decade together with a massive fan release, Railroad Earth Retrospective: 2001-2009, the tightly-woven unit of Railroad Earth is embarking on a new chapter in their musical journey. The rootsy Americana ensemble will hit the stage again on their first tour of 2010 with a new bass player, a new record deal (One Haven Music), and a new album in the can (to be released late Summer 2010) for what is expected to be a great year for the revitalized Railroad Earth. With Spring tour dates mostly focused on the Eastern Seaboard, fans can expect an newly energized live show with surprises around every bend.

After coming off a highly successful 2009, Railroad Earth is preparing for another year of sold-out theaters and large club performances. The band has built up some incredible steam over the past few years with highly notable performances on some of the most prestigious stages in the country, including; the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury, 10,000 Lakes Festival and many more.

Collectively, Railroad Earth wields an impressive arsenal of sounds, with each player bringing a variety of instruments and tones to the collective. The unique howl of an edgy rock-inflected violin, a fat-toned acoustic guitar with sounds bordering on a classic Gibson motif, wild fanning mandolin chording that has an almost piano-like attack, rolling or clawing banjo and dobro, and a slamming rhythm section driven by precise, rock-hard drumming and an aggressively, pumping upright bass. All of this delivered with surprisingly unique vocals, powerful harmonies and world-class songwriting.

To be more precise, Railroad Earth features songwriter/singer, Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, electric guitar, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and newcomer Andrew Altman (Upright bass), formerly of the Southeast band, The Codetalkers .

Railroad Earth’s unique sound is one that may be hard to categorize, but is also damn hard to shake! Each live performance is like a journey into the beating heart of American life, its heartaches and its triumphs. A true musical celebration, this is one tour that is not to be missed.
