RJD2 | Paradise Rock Club - Boston, MA | April 8, 2012

Heading to The Paradise, I’d never seen RJD2 live. No, like many of my fellows, my experience with the artist had been restricted to lone headphone listens of his dusty-funk compilations. And, to be honest, I thought that was good enough. Foolish me.

RJD2 Releases The Glow Remixes EP as Free Download

Renowned producer/DJ RJD2 and his label Electrical Connections are jump-starting the new year with the release of The Glow Remixes on January 3. The three-track digital EP is now available as a free download exclusively through Bandcamp and includes “The Glow” original music video.

The Glow Remixes features new remixes of “The Glow”, a track from his acclaimed 2010 release, The Colossus. One track comes from Paolo Palazzo, who was selected by fans as the winner of RJD2’s recent remix contest. The Chicago heavyweight DJ duo Flosstradamus also gives the original cut a dancefloor-friendly makeover, while Candy Panther completes the EP with his laid back, mid-tempo club adaptation.

Two new pre-orders available today

RJ’s Electrical Connections is also pleased to announce the new record from The Insane Warrior, We Are The Doorways, coming February 1. Starting today, fans can pre-order the CD or digital version of the album exclusively on Bandcamp. Pre-sale includes an immediate free download of a track from the release, “The Water Wheel.” Another track from the album, “Then You Hear Footsteps” is available for free to all fans.

A strictly instrumental affair, We Are The Doorways was loosely inspired by horror and sci-fi film scores of the 70s and early 80s. At times jazzy, psychedelic and introspective with blissful ambient passages, the record still maintains the attention to groove that RJD2 is known for. Unrestrained, open passages - often without rhythmic elements - recall the work of both Eno and John Carpenter.

In addition, an RJD2 & The Insane Warrior limited edition deluxe package is available for pre-order starting today. Available only on Bandcamp, this special offer includes the We Are the Doorways CD,

RJD2’s 2002-2010 vinyl box set (including Deadringer LP, The Horror EP, Since We Last Spoke LP, and the exclusive Tin Foil Hat EP), The Colossus LP, a signed silkscreen poster, and The Insane Warrior’s We Are The Doorways CD.

About RJD2 and RJ’s Electrical Connections

RJD2's music is a no-format collage of cut-and-paste hip-hop, psychedelia, and kitchen sinkism combining disparate elements to make for soulful, moody portraits of the world. Born Ramble John Krohn, the innovative producer’s ten-year career reached a turning point in 2009 after he scored the award-winning theme to the hit AMC show, Mad Men. In early 2010, The Colossus became RJ’s Electrical Connections first release, hailed by SPIN as “his finest album since 2002’s instrumental hip-hop classic Deadringer, balancing punchy funk…with soul ballads.” Filter subsequently called Krohn “the real deal, in a world full of one-dimensional derivatives” while Relix deemed The Colossus a “kaleidoscopic album” with “fist-pumping hip-hop tracks and spastic dance numbers that deserve a place on your heavy rotation playlist.”

The Insane Warrior's We Are The Doorways presents yet another unique landmark in the ever growing catalog of RJ's Electrical Connections.

RJD2 Declares Let There Be Horns!

RJD2 is pleased to present the first video for his new, so-close-you-can-taste-it release, The Colossus, out 1/19 on RJ’s Electrical Connections. The video for “Let There Be Horns,” the opening track off the new record, documents the life of a Minotaur in modern times. Directed by Thom Glunt, it’s a fish out of water story we can all relate to.

Also, RJ kicks off the first leg of his four-legged tour this weekend, starting out in our nation’s capital (all dates below). If you’re low on cash but wouldn’t dare miss the show in your area, check out RJ’s “Tweet to Win” contest on his site, where participants have an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to any show of their choosing, or the grand prize, “The Colossus Deluxe Package,” which includes, among other things, a DJ lesson from RJ himself!

And if that weren’t enough, this week marks the release of RJD2’s iPhone remix app, finally giving fans and tinkerers alike the chance to experience a bit of what it sounded like in RJ’s studio as he worked on The Colossus. The application, called Touch Mix, was created by Future Audio Workshop, the makers of the well-received deadmau5 remix app.  RJD2 announced the news on his website Monday as part of his “Monday Madness” series, telling fans, “you can make your own mixes on the fly with 5 cuts, and also get a sneak preview of another track from The Colossus.”  There are more details about how the Touch Mix app works on their site.

RJD2 To Give Away Free Stuff Every Week Until The Colossus Hits Stores in 2010

This morning RJD2 took to his website to announce that he will be giving away free records, MP3s, and more each Monday from now through the release of his forthcoming full length, The Colossus, on January 19th, 2010.

It all kicks off with a giveaway of a super rare vinyl test pressing of "The Horror" EP, originally released in 2003 on Definitive Jux records and in line to be reissued on November 17th via RJ’s newly formed label, RJ’s Electrical Connections, now home to nearly all things RJD2 past and present.

So far this year has seen the re-release of 2001’s Your Face or Your Knee Caps on August 18th and a limited edition box set entitled RJD2 2002-2010, out last week. A strictly vinyl affair, the box set includes full length LP versions of Deadringer, "The Horror" EP (first time on vinyl!), Since We Last Spoke, "Tin Foil Hat" EP (a brand new EP of 7 unreleased songs), a hand silk screened, signed and numbered poster, a download card for the box set content, plus a beautifully printed box.  Additionally, a space will be left in the box for The Third Hand LP released on XL Recordings in 2007 and a space for The Colossus.

"The Horror" is just one of three reissues to hit stores next month – the other two being 2002’s Deadringer, out November 3rd and 2004’s Since We Last Spoke, also out on November 17th.

And of course topping it all off is RJD2’s new album, The Colossus, to be released on January 19th. Only time will tell what additional prizes he has up his sleeve. Until then, read RJD2’s note and enter for a chance to win here.

RJD2 Releases New Album, The Colossus, Jan. 19, 2010

Whether it be releasing albums on labels including Definitive Jux, XL, Fondle ‘Em, Eastern Conference, or now his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections, producing music by Diverse, Acelayone, and Dice Raw, remixing artists including Massive Attack, Mos Def, Fallout Boy, Cannibal Ox, Booker T, Polyphonic Spree, or releasing albums as Soul Position, RJD2 (aka RJ or Ramble Krohn) has been remarkably inventive and productive in creating music throughout his ten year career. And of course, this doesn’t include the work RJ has done for various television shows, including CSI, and Mad Men (for which he won his first award, ASCAP’s Best TV Theme), films, including Wimbledon and Freedomland, and commercials for brands including Saturn, ESPN, Lion’s Gate, Levi’s, Nike, and more. Throughout this constant influx of studio work, RJ has toured the world and traversed the continental US yearly, most recently with a full band. No matter the outlet throughout this decade, the goal for RJD2 has always been the same – to make a piece of music that is going to hopefully rearrange one’s brain, or at least provide some relief from real life for a moment or two. With his newest album, The Colossus, RJD2 manages to do it once again, perpetually looking forward with a clear reverence for the past.

The Colossus is RJD2’s fourth album, and the first he’ll release on his own label. In addition to re-acquiring the master recordings of his Definitive Jux catalog in its entirety and re-releasing them, this new label marks a huge step for RJ as being completely independent and working on his own terms, artistically and business-wise.

As RJ’s last album, The Third Hand, was his first truly solo album, with no guest performances whatsoever and very little sampling, he decided to move in the opposite direction on The Colossus and create an album that is as collaborative as possible, while also being an “overview” of all the different types of working approaches RJ has used over the years. Some songs are strictly sample-based; some are live; some songs are completely instrumental while others are vocal songs, some featuring guest vocalists, with RJ taking on the duty in others; he brought a few rappers on board, as well. It was all tracked at the same time and in the same place, which gives the album a cohesive feel, but it also manages to retain the diversity throughout that has become a trademark for RJD2. The Colossus features Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, Foreign Exchange), Kenna (Star Trak, VA Beach), Aaron Livingston (The Roots’ Guns Are Drawn), Columbus MC’s The Catalyst, Illogic, NP, and a slew of instrumentalists. Additionally, it marks RJ’s debut behind the drum kit.

The Colossus, out January 19, 2010 on RJ’s Electrical Connections, is RJD2’s most sonically lush and varied record he’s ever created. It is a kaleidoscopic look forward, as well as back.
