Live Dead at The Starry Plough, May 2

On a cool Berkeley evening I walked into The Starry Plough to catch The Grateful Dead cover band Live Dead. The Plough was once again packed with young and old local “Dead Head” hippies, sporting heavy beards and tie-dye shirts. Others danced wildly by the stage, as Live Dead opened their first set a little after 9:30 pm.

donnaDonna Jean Godchaux, Grateful Dead vocalist in the 1970s, will return to Philadelphia on March 7th to host a table at the annual WXPN Beggar’s Banquet fundraiser to be held at Penn’s Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. For more information, go to http://www.xpn.org/support-xpn/2009beggarsbanquet

And since Philly Dead Heads are never satisfied, there’s more. After the Dead’s May 1st concert at The Spectrum (their 51st at the venue), Dead Heads will be able to stroll across Pattison Avenue to McFadden’s, a club located inside Citizen’s Bank Park, where they can – for FREE – see the brand-new Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Mattson. Good deal, huh?

This band is a new one, having morphed out of the former Donna Jean and the Tricksters. Donna Jean Godchaux was of course a member of the Grateful Dead. Jeff Mattson is a founding member of the Zen Tricksters, Long Island’s legendary Dead-oriented band, and has played with Phil Lesh and Friends. Together with David MacKay (a member of Muscle Shoals favorites, The Fiddleworms), Joe Chirco (Long Island’s hardest-working drummer), and Mark Adler (a member of Donna Jean’s original Heart of Gold Band), they’ll keep folks dancing ‘til the wee, wee hours.

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue @ Boulder Theater

photo by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review was formed in 2005 from the top players of the foremost Grateful Dead tribute bands in the Rocky Mountain region, Shakedown Street & Dark Star Orchestra. Based originally on a premise of player interchangeability to suit the situation, compatibility and success have coalesced the band into its present configuration. The band's forte lies in its faithful rendering of Grateful Dead material, both originals and covers, and the Grateful Dead's trademark style of improvisation. Achieved through a careful balance of comprehension and execution of the more defined musical elements of the material with a fearless passion to connect with the elusive "X factor" that Jerry Garcia affectionately spoke of, RMGDR remains aligned with the Dead's creed of playing off the energy of the audience and making them an integral component of the overall dynamic.

The Dead Trees play at Larimer Lounge on December 2nd

The Dead Trees- for the Grateful Web

When it all started out, Matthew, Noah, Tad and Michael weren't really a 'band' exactly but the fruits this "not band" ended up being the much loved Fort Music EP earlier this year.

Last spring, The Dead Trees self released Fort Music EP was widely supported through the Coalition of Independent Music Stores and landed these friends from Boston to supporting Albert Hammond, Jr. on a national tour. They just about burned down the Metro in Chicago, abandoned a broken down van somewhere in Iowa (which is heavily chronicled in Daytrotter.com) along the way playing shows that LA's The House Of Blues in LA and Webster Hall in NYC.

The band plan on touring in support of King Of Rosa throughout the fall/winter of 2008, and into 2009.

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue @ Boulder Theater

Rob Eaton of DSO - photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review is the apex of Colorado's vast cadre of uniquely talented and "Deadicated" musicians. Over the years, many regional bands have offered up their best efforts toward keeping alive the unparalleled music and party spirit of the phenomenon that was the Grateful Dead. From this cross-pollenating web of specialized tribute musicians has shaken out a pool of players deemed most apt, by popular opinion and support, to offer the truest interpretation of the essence of that legendary band.

Unlike many "put a quarter in the jukebox" tribute bands, Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review delivers a caliber of genuineness, spontaneity and artistic integrity by weaving their own measure of "X factor creativity" into the songs, jams and transitional interludes.  Chemistry, both personal and musical, is an important ingredient of the musical high generated by RMGDR. This chemistry exists both among the band members themselves and between the band and their all-important audiences. It is a closed-loop of positive energy that feeds on itself and tends to elevate gyrating bones off the floor.

Perfect harmony with this chemistry emanates when the band is joined by their good friend from Dark Star Orchestra, Rob Eaton. The consummate Grateful Dead tribute musician, Rob is proudly presented as special guest of Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review at the Boulder Theater. Don't miss what is sure to be a very special evening!
