Phamily Reunion: Music, Camping, Vending Options for PHISH ticket holders

eotoIn just three short weeks, PHISH will make their triumphant return to Red Rocks in Morrison, CO for their first performance in 13 years at the legendary amphitheater. The band was banned in 1996 after numerous local complaints about illegal camping and unquestionable behavior of the fans in the small community of Morrison. Flash forward to 2009, where local organizers have put together an alternative to illegal camping by securing a private campground with transportation and late night music included in the ticket price.

The Phamily Reunion, which will coincide all four nights of PHISH at Red Rocks, has a solution for everyone. Ticket holders and those who weren’t lucky enough to get tickets to see PHISH, are all invited to join the all-night party taking place in serene Idaho Springs, CO. After brisk initial ticket sales in 4-day camping passes, event organizers have just released one-day passes to the event, scheduled to go on sale on Thursday, July 9th 2009.

The four-day celebration has already penned an amazing line-up of national acts including The New Mastersounds, EOTO and the “glitch goddess” Ana Sia among five new regional additions to the lineup including: Mama’s Cookin’, Stanky Pockets, Chris Webb Band, Seismic Shift and J Wail Vs. Agobi Nick. More surprises are to come and tickets are going fast, making for great anticipation of the four-day camping and music event in the beautiful Colorado Front Range July 30 through August 2. Day shows at the campground will warm the dancing feet and late-night shows will keep the festivities rolling into the night. To top it off, the festival offers the opportunity to camp under the Colorado stars, whitewater raft, fish, hike, horseback ride and soak in the hot springs.

DEADMAU5 RETURNS W/ 'FOR LACK OF A BETTER NAME'

His name may conjure up images of a lifeless rodent, but the Canadian born self- confessed techno geek otherwise known as DEADMAU5 (pronounced Dead Mouse) punches like a heavyweight.  On September 22, the Grammy-nominated, Juno Award-winning electronic music sensation who has racked up more than 5,000,000 hits on MySpace will unleash his second album for ULTRA Records--titled FOR LACK OF A BETTER NAME--and then set off on a massive fall tour throughout North America.

deadmau5Over the last two years, DEADMAU5 has gone from near obscurity to becoming a superstar as an innovative live performer.  This past spring he sold out two nights at New York City’s Webster Hall and one night at Hollywood, CA’s legendary 4,000- capacity Palladium.  This summer he’ll perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Electric Zoo in New York, Glastonbury in the U.K. and a host of other European festivals. In the fall,  he’ll launch his mammoth world-wide ‘For Lack Of A Better Name’ tour encompassing over 30 dates in North America alone, including the headlining slot on the highly anticipated annual HARD Halloween event taking place at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The trek will kick off September 23 at Ritual in Ottowa, the day after For Lack Of A Better Name drops in both Canada and the U.S.  The non-stop routing will take DEADMAU5 through markets up and down both seaboards and throughout the interior of both countries with stops in his hometown of Toronto, San Francisco, Denver, Little Rock and everywhere in between, all while wearing his signature custom-made mau5head.  The complete listing of tour markets follows below.

On For Lack Of A Better Name, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2008 debut Random Album Title, DEADMAU5 takes a different turn by incorporating various styles of music into multi-blocks of songs.  The album will include “Ghosts ‘N’ Stuff,” featuring Pendulum’s Rob Swire, and the title track, both of which he’ll perform on tour. Further details about the album will be unveiled at a later date.

Meanwhile, the video for DEADMAU5 and Kaskade’s club smash “I Remember” continues to make waves. Already garnering over 500K views on YouTube, the video has been favored by the likes of AOL as the Video of the Day and featured by both MySpace US and UK.  Shot in Manchester, U.K., the video stars favorite actor Stephen Graham (This is England, Snatch).  View the full length ten minute video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRj91VZG4Dw.

Nouvelle Vague play select US cities for June tour!

On their debut, Nouvelle Vague took cherished tracks from the late 1970s and early 1980s by acts such as Joy Division, The Clash, The Cure, Depeche Mode and the Dead Kennedys and reworked them in a gentle bossa nova style. Sung by French female vocalists, some of whom had never heard the originals before, these cult hits had new life breathed into them, and their meanings became softly subverted. In French, Nouvelle Vague means “new wave”, and “bossa nova” in Portuguese. Even the records’ sleeves wittily referenced the artwork for Jean Luc Godard’s early-’60s new-wave films.

The group expanded its musical palette on Bande A Part, adding touches of reggae, ska and blues to balmy readings of familiar numbers by Bauhaus, Blondie, Buzzcocks, New Order and Yazoo, among others. By this point, even hardcore fans who’d considered these easy-listening versions of punk staples to be sacrilege learned to enjoy Nouvelle Vague as a guilty pleasure. But what of the authors who wrote the original songs – what did these once-ruthless idealists think of Nouvelle Vague’s more fragrant approach?

Well, of those canvassed, all approved – thumbs up from Mick Jones of the Clash, Morrissey, the Undertones, Dead Kennedys and Killing Joke. And this led Oliver and Marc to the concept behind the third album: Nouvelle Vague performs duets with the original singers.  The pair wrote a ‘dream’ list of the people they’d most like on the album and, when contacted, most said yes.

So on NV3 you’ll encounter Depeche Mode’s singing “Master and Servant” with Nouvelle Vague’s leading lady Melanie Pain; Ian McCulloch of Echo And The Bunnymen duetting with Melanie on “All My Colours”; Marina Celeste performing “Our Lips Are Sealed” with Terry Hall of the Specials and Funboy Three (that’s a Go-Go’s track penned by Hall); and Magazine’s “Parade” sung by Barry Adamson and NV’s Nadeah Miranda. For additional tracks that didn’t make the final album, Chris Bailey from legendary Kiwi rockers The Saints performs a duet, likewiseSamy Birnbach of noted Belgian new-wavers Minimal Compact.

Nouvelle Vague transform Talking Heads’ “Road To Nowhere” into a dusty bar-room shuffle, its head bowed as it traipses into the sunset after a long day working the land. “Heaven” by Psychedelic Furs becomes a tender acoustic affair. A bluesy swagger through Gary Numan’s “Metal” is sung with innocence and charm by Eloisia, a young Brazilian girl who could barely speak English and knew nothing of this music. Even “God Save The Queen”, once full of menace and bile, is fashioned into a romantic flutter. Add enchanting covers of Plastic Bertrand’s “Ca Plane Pour Moi”, Soft Cell’s “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” and “So Lonely” by the Police, and you have Nouvelle Vague’s strongest album to date.

To keep it fresh, Marc and Olivier approached this album in the same spirit of discovery with which they made their 2004 debut. Back then, says Olivier, they recorded four songs for fun and played them to friends, who loved them, and also loved the idea of turning new-wave songs into something different. And so they made an album.

As with all Nouvelle Vague’s work, the real stars of the records and shows are the songs themselves.

When Nouvelle Vague play live, these well-known songs by other people become Nouvelle Vague’s songs. They own them, you might say. In the last few years the group have taken to the road as a six-piece touring outfit, playing shows and festivals all over the world.

PAUL VAN DYK: FULL TRACK LISTING FOR DOUBLE-DISC 'BEST OF' ANTHOLOGY UNVEILED

Throughout his unparalleled 15-year career in electronic dance music, PAUL VAN DYK has achieved what most musicians in any genre only dream of: a hugely successful recording career that has resulted in over three and a half million albums sold worldwide, a prestigious Grammy nomination, a high profile remixography that includes U2, Justin Timberlake, Depeche Mode and Britney Spears, multiple sold-out global tours and now his very own DJ iPhone and iPod App.  Following the June 9 (retail) and May 26 (digital) release date announcement for his next album VOLUME (Ultra Records), the dance music trailblazer has now unveiled details about the package’s track listing and U.S. tour.

van dykVOLUME is a heavyweight two-disc anthology of PAUL VAN DYK’s most memorable and requested releases of original songs from his studio albums 45 RPM (1994), Seven Ways (1996), Out There And Back (2000), the Grammy-nominated Reflections (2003) and In Between (2007), plus various remix productions.  CD 1 is a mixed collection of his original works including “White Lies,” featuring the Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta, “Nothing But You” and “Time Of Our Lives” with Vega 4, whose lead singer Johnny McDaid also lends his vocals to the brand new song “Home” that was created specially for VOLUME.  Also highlighted are VAN DYK’s stellar hits “Forbidden Fruit” and “We Are Alive” that achieved worldwide chart success.

The set additionally includes a new mix by VAN DYK--as constantly requested by his fans--of his timeless classic “For An Angel.”  Also available to coincide with the release will be a remix EP of a number of new mixes by Spencer & Hill, Miika Kuisma, Filo and Peri, Dave Darrell and others of “For An Angel.”  CD 2 consists of his most popular remixes of artists such as U2, Depeche Mode, New Order, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.  The complete track listing follows below.

In support of VOLUME, the live electronic music performer who’s known for his creative on-the-spot mastery will embark on an intense tour, appearing in 17 cities in 17 days.  The VOLUME tour kicks off June 11 in Scottsdale, AZ and will take VAN DYK throughout middle-America, making stops in such markets as Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville and Atlanta.  The leg wraps June 26 with a headlining spot at the Electric Daisy Carnival in downtown Los Angeles, the two-day festival where over 100,000 people are expected.  Select dates prior to the tour will have VAN DYK hitting San Francisco and Las Vegas for headlining one-off Memorial Day weekend performances.  The highly anticipated tour is one of the most sought-after tickets this summer.  Fans can check out www.wantickets.com/paulvandyk, the official ticket provider of the PAUL VAN DYK - VOLUME U.S. Tour, for more information.

Since announcing the PAUL VAN DYK iPhone Application last Monday, April 21, the YouTube link which depicts him demonstrating the different assets of the app has already received over 10,000 views.  “What you have is different tools that … are very, very helpful if you’re a DJ,” VAN DYK told Deanna Rilling of the Las Vegas Weekly (4/23/09) about the new technology.  “Van Dyk explains that he didn’t want a boring app that people lose interest in after a few minutes. ‘I wanted to have something more than just a gadget,’ he says. Van Dyk’s app has BPM, decibel and frequency meters, plus a torch function to illuminate the booth in case a DJ loses a contact lens or drink ticket.”

Let Out a Big Howl for Wolves: Stop Open Fire Orders

In just a few weeks, the mass killing of wolves could begin in Idaho and Montana -- and not even newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers will be spared.

We cannot stand by while this slaughter unfolds. On May 4, the wolf's federal protection will be lifted, and government agents will be free to open fire. After that, the states will launch public hunts, targeting wolves.

We must act now to call off the guns!

That's why NRDC is launching The Big Howl campaign to mobilize Americans everywhere to protect wolves in the Northern Rockies from the crossfire.

Add your voice now to our campaign. Tell Interior Secretary Salazar to reverse his decision to kick wolves off the endangered species list.

This is absolutely the wrong time to rip away federal protections from these struggling wolves. Over the past year, the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park has declined by 27 percent, with more than 70 percent of wolf pups succumbing to disease.

One pack alone lost all 24 of its pups!

If the federal protections are lifted on May 4 as planned, newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers traveling outside national parks will be in the line of fire.

That's why NRDC and our partners are filing suit in federal court to block this disastrous policy. But we must do more: we must raise a nationwide outcry that the Obama Administration cannot ignore.

And so we're calling on everyone who cares about wolves to take part in The Big Howl campaign.

Please call on the Interior Department to go back to the drawing board and submit this cruel plan to the kind of rigorous scientific review the Obama Administration has promised.

Because you have always stood up for wildlife, I'm contacting you first to take part in The Big Howl campaign.

After you send your own message, I will let you know about an easy way to spread the word to your friends and family. We need at least one million messages to save the wolves -- so get ready to rally your friends and family to add their own voices to The Big Howl.

Blue Turtle Seduction: 16 States for 13 Floors Tour

blue-turtleBlue Turtle Seduction is no stranger to the road - and now their upcoming “16 States, 13 Floors Tour,” leads them across 16 states in support of their digital release of 13 Floors, proof this touring juggernaut is primed to give the fans ample opportunity to hear the latest tunes featured on the release. The bluegrass, folk, hip-hop and rock ensemble will kick off the tour in Sparks, Nevada, on April 18 before making their way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and several others before heading back west with a finale in Dunsmuir, CA, at Sengthong’s Blue Sky Room on May 16, less than a month after the tour kicks off.

Hailing from South Lake Tahoe, CA, the band released the digital version of their album 13 Floors on Feb. 10. Perhaps the truest encapsulation of the essence of the band, this release pieces influences from The String Cheese Incident to Duran Duran to The Clash into a 13 track good vibe record. Since forming in 2001, the band has worked to bring the good mountain vibes together with the easy living vibes of the coast of California. The album is at times rock, at times bluegrass, occasionally hip-hop and gypsy folk at the core. The album showcases each musician equally, with intricate undertones of a deeper side of the band. Dennis Cook of JamBase.com said of the album in a Sept. 2008 review, “… 13 Floors is a good time, plain and simple, and a finely crafted studio effort that hints at their true depths.”

Featuring Jay Seals (guitar, vocals) Glenn Stewart (harmonica, pan flute, vocals), Christian Zupancic (violin, mandolin, vocals), Stephen Seals (bass) and Adam Navone (drums), the band met while working at a resort in South Lake Tahoe. Their combined effort on-stage leaves no opportunity for crowds to just stand there, but rather, get down and dance. Big smiles and high energy typify a Blue Turtle Seduction show, all the while spreading the socially aware message the band has grown to be known for.

Already the band has worked up thrilling stage interpretations of the songs off of 13 Floors, so fans should expect to hear the album in variation at stops along the 16-state run. And further expect those songs to lead into jam sessions, then falling back into chorus. Several highlights on this tour include the Norman Music Festival and the Hemp Hoe Down, as well as sharing bills with Oakhurst, That One Guy, Madahoochi, 56 Hope Road and Pert Her Sandstone. Spring is a great time for a road trip and Blue Turtle Seduction is really looking forward to this one.

kyleKGNU and the Boulder Weekly proudly present the 17th annual Microbreweries for the Environment benefit on Friday, April 24 at The Boulder Theater.

Since 1993, the Microbreweries for the Environment benefit has raised over $100,000 for local environmental causes.  The proceeds from this year's benefit will further the environmental efforts of University of Colorado Environmental Center, Community Cycles, Boulder Valley Inner City Outings, and Tiyospaye Winyan Maka.

Eighteen Colorado microbreweries serve their best beers for only $2 each. Participating breweries include:  Avery Brewing, BJ's Brewhouse, Boulder Beer Co, Breckenridge Brewery, Bristol Brewing Co, Dillon Dam Brewery, Flying Dog Brewery, Fort Collins Brewery, Great Divide Brewing Co, Left Hand Brewing Co, New Belgium Brewing Co, Odell Brewing Co, Oskar Blues Brewery, Pumphouse Brewery, Ska Brewing, Steamworks, Twisted Pine Brewing, Upslope Brewing Company

The evening's entertainment features music by Kyle Hollingsworth and Friends, featuring Liza Oxnard. The opening band is The Pimps of Joytime.  The soulful and funky music is sure to go well with Colorado's finest brews.

The benefit is a zero-waste and carbon-neutral event.  We encourage people to walk, bike, or bus to the event.  Doors open and beer tasting starts at 8:00pm, and music will run to 12:30am.  Admission costs $23 inclusive of tax and service charges.  Tickets are available at the Boulder Theater Box Office (303-786-7030 or www.bouldertheater.com).  This event traditionally sells out in advance.

Tell Congress to vote Yes for President Obama's clean energy budget

In the coming days and weeks, Congress will consider a budget resolution based on President Obama's proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2010. The president's proposal is a blueprint for major visionary investments that would direct billions of dollars toward the development of clean energy technologies and green jobs.

It is particularly important for Congress to pass a budget resolution that reflects the president's commitment to solving global warming. Capping global warming pollution is the cornerstone of the comprehensive effort we need to create jobs, improve our national security and protect our planet. Every year the auction and allocation of global warming pollution permits would generate billions of dollars, which would then be used for middle class tax cuts and clean energy technology research and development.

The president's proposed budget also includes important funding increases across a broad spectrum of environmental programs, many of which were slashed during the Bush administration. Specific proposals include investments in clean energy, clean water and public transportation; increasing the Environmental Protection Agency's budget; and cleaning up the nation's worst hazardous waste sites.

What to do
Send a message urging your senators and representative to vote YES on a budget resolution that provides the resources necessary to cap global warming pollution and invest in clean energy solutions and other environmental priorities.
