The Werk Out Festival Announces 2011 Lineup

Ohio’s up-and-coming jamband powerhouse, The Werks are thrilled to announce their second annual Werk Out Festival, held Thursday through Sunday  September 8–11 at Zane Shawnee Caverns in Bellefontaine.

Building off the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s Werk Out Festival gets even better with two nights of The Werks.  Special guests include the nation’s top tribute act, Dark Star Orchestra performing with former Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux recreating a historical Jerry Garcia Band show for the first time ever.

Additional performers include String Cheese Incident side projects EOTO (percussion, loop and trance duo) & the Kyle Hollingsworth Band (SCI’s keyboardist leads a funky quintet), as well as the Donna Jean Godchaux Band (Grateful Dead), Australia’s Ganja Giri, super group The Everyone Orchestra, keyboardist Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers Band) and over 50 total bands.

Fusing psychedelic and shredding guitar, a screaming classic rock organ, funk slap bass, and modern dance beats and synthesizers, The Werks have created a style all of their own - "Psychedelic Dance Rock." These highly unique and highly danceable grooves have earned them a devoted following, as well as invitations to perform at some of this summer’s hottest festivals, including the All Good Festival, Electric Forest (formerly Rothbury), Summer Camp Festival and Wakarusa.

Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead live experience by recreating historic setlists.  They have been acclaimed by Rolling Stone, USA Today and have had five members of the original Grateful Dead join DSO on stage. Along with special guest and former Grateful Dead & Jerry Garcia Band member, Donna Jean Godchaux, this year’s Werk Out Festival, marks the first time DSO has ever recreated a historic Jerry Garcia Band performance.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of EOTO, the project from String Cheese Incident members Michael Travis and Jason Hann.  Born out of their shared love of dance music, the duo’s M.O. is to take the free-wheeling party vibe of a DJ set to the next level by using organic instruments and innovative performance technology.

As a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Kyle Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his own mark in the new, always-evolving music scene.

Donna Jean Godchaux got her start at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Fame Studios, performing with Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge’s and Boz Scagg, before later joining the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band.  Her band fuses music drawn from her tenure as a member of the Grateful Dead as well as originals of their own.

The Everyone Orchestra conductor/founder Matt Butler has taken its participants, both on stage and off, on improvisational journeys with the most diverse of lineups. Tuning in to his energy, the band and audience utilize The Conductor as their pivot to the set mood of each passing jam as The Everyone Orchestra balances the challenges of live group improvisation with triumphant tension and release conduits of music which head deep into the soul.

Ganga Giri personifies the sound of Traditional Australian Didjeridu creating a powerful rhythmic style. The ensemble mixes pumping, percussive Didjeridu, fat tribal beats, funky dub bass lines, ethnic instruments and world percussion sounds to create a unique tribal-technological, deep earth dance experience.

Although not a household name, keyboardist Johnny Neel is a Grammy award nominee, recognized for his work with the Allman Brothers Band, Lonnie Mack and Gov't Mule. His songs have been recorded by the likes of John Mayall, Irma Thomas, Travis Tritt and many others.

Rounding out the rest of the lineup includes Jamie Janover, Family Groove Company, RoeVy, The Twin Cats, The Floorwalkers, Fiddleworms, Romeo Champagne, Jones for Revival, Blue Moon Soup, Wheels, Soul Rebels, Fletcher's Grove, The Folkadelics and Glostik Willy.

The Werk Out Festival is produced by AlchemyHouse Presents, Funky Bean Productions and The Werks Music, LLC

Cas Haley at the Fox Theater on 12/1/2010

Cas Haley is breaking out on his own terms.

Connection, his Easy Star Records debut, is aptly named. It’s all about those deep-running connections that make him what he is—those unbreakable links between artist and audience, between styles of music, between art and life, and most of all, between all people. As Cas points out, reggae’s core message is, after all, "one love."

His crystalline voice and funky, easygoing beats earned Cas a second-place finish on America’s Got Talent, which in turn netted him a measure of fame and a following. But the contest also locked the Texan singer/songwriter/guitarist into a major label deal that didn’t feel right. So, not wanting to be turned into a manufactured product, he struck out on his own. The superb result: Connection, a collection of songs basking in the philosophical and musical maturity that comes from staying true to his artistic vision.

Raised by musician parents, Cas grew up surrounded by the sounds of blues and 60s-70s rock. He got serious about the guitar at age 12 and was "taught by the tribe" of musicians passing through the house. "The kitchen would be turned into the practice room or for jam sessions, so I was pretty much born into that lifestyle," he says. And from the very beginning he was more inclined to create his own music than to slavishly learn covers.

Also prominent at home were the Bob Marley records his mother would play, which made a profound impression. After a period of heavy immersion in the sounds of the ska/punk/skateboard culture, Cas was blown away by the classic reggae-pop of bands like UB40 and Sublime, and his mature style began to take shape.

Those pop-inflected island grooves and his joyful, versatile voice helped bring Cas to the brink of stardom on America’s Got Talent and sell 30,000 copies of a debut album with virtually no promotion. And they’re fundamental to the soul of his music—what he calls the "relaxing, effortless playing where everything fits together." Elements of soul, blues, and pop swirl through Cas’s strong reggae beats. Just like disparate musical styles, "we’re way more connected than we think," Cas says. "We separate ourselves in so many different ways, but the whole theme of the album is that we’re all connected."

"Every color," he sings in the title track, "is created from the same light."

Easy Star, the leading U.S.-based independent reggae label, is the ideal home for Connection. The label has been stretching beyond its strictly roots-reggae format, signing progressive bands and artists like John Brown’s Body, Tommy T, and The Black Seeds. “Cas’s sound is unique, accessible, and a great way to keep expanding the Easy Star audience," says CEO Eric Smith. "And it’s not often we come across a singer-songwriter this talented, regardless of genre, so we had to work with Cas.”

Mixed by Danny Kalb (Ben Harper, Beck), Connection bristles with chill grooves, rocking guitars, and funky horns, all fueling Cas’s irresistible melodies. Meanwhile his lyrics effortlessly balance simple, spiritual truths with thoughtful reflection. Cas’s songs recognize the complexities of life—love, family, worldly troubles and uncertainties—but always come back to the central message of connection.

It’s the journey that matters; Cas is aiming for success on his own terms. "If I’m not doing it authentically then I don’t want it," he says. His only goal: "To authentically express myself and help others do the same. Because it’s a sweet life to be able to do that."

7 Walkers, featuring Bill Kreutzmann and Papa Mali, Announce Dates

Legendary drummer and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann, together with funky bluesman and voodoo electronic pioneer Papa Mali, officially unveil 7 Walkers’ spring plans. 7 Walkers, which also features bass virtuoso Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, JFJO) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson and Friends), will stop at select markets and festivals through out the country, all in anticipation of a new album release. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

7 Walkers recently spent time at an Austin, Texas studio, recording an album to be released later this year. In addition to a brand-new batch of Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan lyricist) originals that were co-written with the band, the new album offers up favorites from the Grateful Dead repertoire, Papa Mali originals, and some New Orleans and Southern songbook interpretations. Overall, the result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture the unique collaboration between these two very different musical shamans.

Bill Kreutzmann (who played every show in the Grateful Dead’s illustrious 30 year career as well as The Dead incarnations since) first met funky Papa Mali at a festival in 2008. Bill recalls in a recent interview, “We first met at the Oregon Country Fair last year. He was the headliner on the main stage, and I sat there and watched him and went, ‘This guy's for real man, I like this guy.' Then we met, after that he came over to my trailer that I was staying in and you couldn't separate us, we talked for hours. It was just one of those natural things, you know? You can't plan it; You can't make it happen. And then we started playing together.”

Live audio recordings of the 7 Walkers can be heard at the newly re-launched www.billkreutzmann.com.

Meanwhile, at nugs.net, fans can now download live BK3 recordings from their 2009 Colorado shows. Another potent Kreutzmann musical project, BK3 first toured in 2008 and featured a rotating lineup including such players as guitarist Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and bassists James "Hutch" Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers), and Mike Gordon (Phish).

Bill Kreutzmann is also working to support the efforts of University of California at Santa Cruz, who has committed to helping to archive all things Grateful Dead. As Kreutzmann explains, “I am incredibly happy that the kind archivists at UC Santa Cruz understand the social value of [the Grateful Dead’s] priceless archive, and its hallowed meaning to our most beloved ‘Dead Heads.’ Without the care it is now going to receive, these treasures would be lost.”

RJD2 @ The Highline Ballroom in New York City

RJD2 isn't that cute little droid acting as one half of a Greek Chorus in the Star Wars saga. But he did, start his set as a robot named 'Commissioner Crotchbuttons'; Complete with welders mask and "the world's first scrotum powered music machine" (a modified MPC sequencer that spins around on his lower waist). Yes, it's even more amusing than it sounds.

RJD2, also known as Ramble John "RJ" Krohn, played the Highline Ballroom in New York City to a sold out crowd in support of his new album "The Colossus". Over the past decade, RJD2 has made a name for himself in the world of sample-based/instrumental hip hop. Think of him as a cross between DJ Shadow and a darker, more cinematic and less commercialized Moby.

Tonight, RJ's energetic performance behind the turntables is complemented by a giant screen showing kinetic imagery from such films and shows as The Matrix, Desperado, Transporter 2, and Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Early in the set, the crowd went crazy for "A Beautiful Mine", his most well known track and the theme music from AMC's Mad Men. Oh, so, now you might have heard of him, right? Okay. Moving on.

Fortunately, RJ isn't complacent enough to stand behind turntables and mixers for the entire performance. Instead he breaks out a guitar and is joined by a backup band including bass, keyboard & drums and breaks out into his brand of funky hip hop bouncing between his DJ setup and guitar.

About two thirds into it, the set loses steam. RJ breaks out a bass guitar, introduces singer Aaron Livingston, and shifts gears from fast and funky (on the verge of crunkadelic) beats to slow R&B. Much of the audience is slightly confused. But for those who have heard 'The Colossus' know that RJ is trying to expand beyond the cut and paste. And, while RJ's clearly a talented instrumentalist and producer, his recent journey into soul music seems like he's been inspired by Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds. The crowd listens politely. Granted, it's not that it's bad, per se. It just doesn't fit within the RJD2 universe. Next to awesome tracks like "Let There Be Horns" and "1976" this R&B stuff is pretty boring in comparison.

RJ proclaims that he and Mr. Livingston "just finished a record together. I think it's some of the best shit I've ever done." According to a recent tweet, this new project/collaboration is called 'Icebird'. Apparently, RJ is very excited for us to hear it. But, let's be honest. Unless it resembles his previous albums, it's not what RJD2 fans want. Keeping it separate might be a good idea.

As if he senses that the crowd was getting antsy, he shifts back into gear with "The Horror" and "Ghostwriter" (Arguably, his two best songs). This is the high point of the show and proves that when RJD2 is at his best, he's a brilliant force to be reckoned with.
