Frank Sinatra/Count Basie Reprise recordings coming from Concord

By the early 1960s, Frank Sinatra and Count Basie had already cemented their respective reputations as two of the most versatile and enduring entertainers of the 20th century. When these two titans united in the studio for recordings on Reprise — Sinatra’s own label, which he’d launched at the start of the decade — the results were historic. The first album was simply titled Sinatra-Basie: An Historical Musical First, a 1963 release that climbed to the top five on Billboard’s pop album charts over the course of a 42-week run. A year later, It Might As Well Be Swing rose to #13 during a 31-week stretch on the same charts.

On September 6, 2011, Concord Records will reissue both of these recordings in a single collection, Frank Sinatra & Count Basie: The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings. Under license from Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE), the 20-song compilation is enhanced via digital restoration and remastering, and includes brand new liner notes from music journalist and historian Bill Dahl that provide historical context for these pivotal recordings. Also included are original anecdotes from Quincy Jones, who produced It Might As Well Be Swing.

“It’s virtually impossible to imagine a more swinging combination than Frank Sinatra — the premier pop vocalist of an adoring generation — and the mighty orchestra of Count Basie,” says Dahl in his liner notes. “Such a scintillating summit meeting actually unfolded not once but twice in the studio. This collection brings together both of these historic album-length collaborations, first out on the label Sinatra founded, Reprise. It’s a thoroughly satisfying soiree.”

Dahl provides background information about the history of Basie’s orchestra in the decades leading up to the two recordings. He also discusses Sinatra’s transition from Capitol to Reprise and the artistic freedom that came with it, as well as Neal Hefti’s arrangements for both albums, Quincy Jones’ production of the latter, and brief annotations of every song in the collection.

“Another memorable collection between the Chairman and the Count would soon be recorded for posterity by Reprise, [with Jones] arranging and conducting 1966’s Sinatra at the Sands,” says Dahl. “But even performing for those hip high rollers in Vegas couldn’t top what Sinatra and Basie accomplished during these two studio collaborations. This was musical history in the making, as fabulously fresh and frisky now as it was back then. Let the swinging commence.”

Buck Owens pre-Capitol 1950s recordings reissued on RockBeat

Buck Owens is synonymous with the Bakersfield sound of country music that also gave rise to the Maddox brothers and Rose, Tommy Collins, Ferlin Husky and in later years Merle Haggard.

Owens’ earliest recordings for independent labels in Southern California — ahead of his lucrative career on Capitol Records in the ’60s and ’70s — have been collected on Buck Owens — Bound for Bakersfield 1953-1956: The Complete Pre-Capitol Collection, scheduled for release on September 27 on RockBeat Records through e0ne Entertainment. The suggested retail price is $14.98.

The 24-song reissue opens with selections from his first known session in 1953 in Hollywood, which produced two singles (“Down on the Corner of Love” b/w “It Don’t Show on Me” and “The House Down the Block” b/w “Right After the Dance”) on Claude Caviness’ Pico Rivera-based Pep Records. It closes with a 1956 Bakersfield session that produced singles on Chesterfield Records and an album on La Brea Records. Included are previously unreleased alternate takes including an overdubbed version of “Hot Dog.”

Liner notes for Bound for Bakersfield were written by Rich Kienzle, a music historian with special expertise in West Coast country. RockBeat VP or A&R James Austin and Jim Shaw of Buck Owens’ Buckaroos compiled the collection.

According to Kienzle’s notes, “Buck Owens was 21 when he rolled into Bakersfield from Phoenix in May, 1951, a part-time musician and laborer who had his eye on a musical career. It would take some time. There were lessons to be learned and dues to be paid. But in the final analysis, the Buck of legend, of the raw honky-tonk vocals, catchy commercial tunes, twangy Fender Telecasters and churning, aggressive ‘freight train’ rhythms was forged in Bakersfield's honky tonks and recording studios there and in L.A. from 1951 to 1957.”

Owens is best known for his later Capitol Records hits like “Tiger by the Tail,” “Foolin’ Around” and “Act Naturally.” But his ’50s pre-Capitol recordings find him working in a honky tonk milieu (except for the rockabilly tracks such as the 1957 single “Hot Dog”). One can hear early flashes of the distinctive sound he'd perfect at Capitol, the sound that made him famous.

With his indie singles earning him both regional recognition and buzz from A&R departments at both Capitol and Columbia Records, Owens passed on New York’s Columbia (whose producer told Owens to “hold on” until he could come to the West Coast) in favor of Hollywood-based Capitol Records, which made him an offer on the spot. Owens was known to Capitol from his work on sessions by one of the originators of the Bakersfield sound, Tommy Collins. Buck’s own first Capitol session in 1957 aimed for a pop-rock audience, trying, as he later said, “to make the biggest hillbilly in Bakersfield into somethin’ he wasn’t.” In 1959, he was recorded as his true, honky-tonking self, with great success.

Kienzle notes, “Buck Owens was always known for his spot-on instincts. Clearly, his expectation that he’d have no recording career beyond Pep and the odd demo or two was a rare miscalculation. These raw, primal performances, blended with hundreds of hours onstage at the Blackboard (club in Bakersfield), were essentially part of a long rehearsal for the fame that came soon enough.”

Reggae Band Tribal Seeds Announces National Fall 2011 Tour

San Diego based, award-winning reggae band Tribal Seeds announced today the dates for their upcoming fall 2011 tour.  The shows will span over 25 dates in two months, kicking off in Tucson, Arizona at The Rock on October 12, 2011.  Tribal Seeds have become known for their spiritually driven, refreshing rock vibe, that they have intertwined with the roots style of reggae music.

Of the tour, the band shares, “We look forward to bringing a new show with songs from our latest EP ‘Soundwaves’ and new twists to some of our older fan favorite songs. Fans might get sneak peak of some brand new unreleased stuff as well! Have to come out and see for yourself!”

On July 19, 2011, Tribal Seeds gave listeners a brand new EP entitled “Soundwaves,” which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Charts. Their previous efforts,  their debut, self titled album, “Tribal Seeds” was released in 2008, and their second album “The Harvest” was released in June of 2009. iTunes named both albums the “Best Of” in the Reggae genre, for their respected years. Their debut album helped garner them the “Best World Music” title at the San Diego Music Awards in 2008, and “The Harvest,” which contained fourteen new and original songs, debuted at the number 5 spot on the Billboard Reggae Charts.

Tribal Seeds have toured throughout the United States, and have also performed in Mexico, Guam, Aruba, and Hawaii. Following a two year hiatus, except for one gig opening for Jane’s Addiction on New Year’s Eve in 2009, Boulder-based rock and roll band Rose Hill Drive has returned to debut the addition of new member bass player Jimmy Stofer and an entire album’s worth of brand-new material.

In 2003, guitarist Daniel Sproul, his vocalist brother Jacob and childhood friend drummer Nate Barnes began practicing in the basement of the house on Rose Hill Drive in Boulder, Colorado that the Sproul brothers grew up in. Since then, they’ve released two full-length albums, 2006’s self-titled debut and 2008’s “Moon Is The New Earth,” several EPs, and developed a worldwide fan base. In 2009, the trio went on hiatus.

In the ensuing months, Jacob switched from bass to guitar, bassist Stofer came on board, and the newly formed quartet began writing new material, which eventually became the band’s third studio album, 2011’s “Americana.” Stofer was previously a member of such local favorites as Hello Kavita and Dualistics.

Rose Hill Drive’s raw, emotive rock has earned the group high praises from both critics and fellow musicians alike. The band has opened for Wilco, The Black Crowes, Queens Of The Stone Age, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Stone Temple Pilots and The Who, among others.

The Dang-It Bobbys Release New Album 'Big Trouble'

The Dang-it Bobbys, whose sound The New York Times described as “lovely riffs on bluegrass, country and folk music,” will release on September 20 its sophomore album, BIG TROUBLE, the follow-up to its 2009 debut, SOMETHING IN THE AIR. The Dang-it Bobbys, led by multi-instrumentalist Kris Bauman, explore what the word “Americana” truly means on the upcoming release, which features musicians from the New York City bluegrass, jazz, rock and country music scene, The band is a real melting pot of American music, showcasing the talents of blues/funk guitarist Luca Benedetti (ulu), jazz/classical violinist Alan Grubner (Henry Threadgill, Howard Levy), jazz bassist Chris Higgins (Pat Metheny), bluegrass mandolinist Dan Marcus (Norah Jones), and the 2001 RockyGrass Dobro champion, Todd Livingston (Earl Scruggs).
The Dang-it Bobbys’ unorthodox background is clearly evident on the autobiographical title track “Big Trouble,” a cautionary tale for would-be travelers to Mexico, juxtaposing a bluegrass style 4/4 and English lyrics with a traditional Mexican 3/4 feel and “gringo-ized” Spanish. On “Hey Guess What,” the cyclical form, heart-wrenching harmonica and mantric snare drum provide the backdrop to a mother’s attempt to come clean to her daughter. “Heading Out,” an unconventional ballad, showcases the band’s range of both intensity and tenderness.
The Dang-it Bobbys garner influence from all facets of American music, from bluegrass and country to jazz and blues. It is this flavorful stew of styles, coupled with the artistry of the adroit musicians featured on BIG TROUBLE, that give The Dang-it Bobbys an unquestionably American sound.

“This album is from my heart,” says Ziggy Marley of his second solo album, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide).  Embracing both the spiritual and emotional side of life, Ziggy has definitively come into his own as an artist.  The twelve-track album, released early July, showcases Ziggy’s tightly rolled talents as a songwriter (writing all cuts), musician (playing most of the instruments) and producer (shepherding all dozen tracks, with three co-produced by Grammy winner Ross Hogarth).  The only thing more joyful than making it, says Ziggy, is the anticipation of the global tour he expects to kick off this summer.

Written “all over the world,” Love Is My Religion expands upon the personal, social and political themes explored in Ziggy’s debut CD, Dragonfly. Its musical center is clearly reggae, peppered by African percussion and other flavors.  Opening with the subversively danceable “Into the Groove,” Ziggy delves into an upbeat meditation on finding one’s self.  On the title track, “Love is My Religion,” his message is one that “people need to hear,” a unifying devotion to love that “needs to be preached in churches and mosque and synagogues.”  The notion of overcoming stereotypes and superstition informs the slinky “Black Cat,” while the romantic “Make Some Music” finds a partner in the mid-tempo “A Lifetime.”

Friendship is one of the album’s recurring themes, whether as the core of monogamous love or the connective tissue of global brotherhood.  “Friend” and “On the Beach in Hawaii” each offer an ode to love.  In “Keep on Dreamin’,” Ziggy extends the idea into the spiritual world, reconnecting with his father through dreams.  The album’s most political song, “Be Free,” implores the listener to reject the manipulating power of fear.  Slavery and its continuing effects are explored on “Still the Storms,” which laments the crises in nations like Sudan, Rwanda and Sierra Leone by analogizing the path of hurricanes with the path of slave ships.  The album closes with the simple and the complex: an acoustic guitar version of “Love Is My Religion” and a bass-heavy, trip-hop mix of “Be Free.”

After two decades as the driving creative force behind The Melody Makers – a triple Grammy winning act, Ziggy released his debut solo album in 2003, Dragonfly, which featured such guest artists as Flea and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mike Einziger and DJ Kilmore (Incubus).  He has contributed to a variety of soundtracks including 50 First Dates and Shark’s Tale, in which he delved into acting for the first time, playing the character of Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish.

In addition to his musical skills, Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other developing nations.  More recently he has thrown his support behind the Youth AIDS campaign.

The Rapture Announces U.S. Tour Dates

The Rapture recently shared “How Deep Is Your Love?,” the first album track from In The Grace Of Your Love, along with Emperor Machine’s remix of the track via Adult Swim (downloads for both below!). Now, we’re excited to share the news of The Rapture’s first full U.S. tour in support of the album, which will see them on the road from late September through October!

The band has set the bar high with the first track, but this is just the beginning.  Produced by Philippe Zdar (Phoenix, Beastie Boys, Chromeo), the writing and recording process for In The Grace Of Your Love connected the band back to why they started playing music in the first place. Drummer Vito Roccoforte explains that they “focused on the process more than the results. We approached the album in a fearless manner, with nothing to lose.” By recapturing the fun and love for the process, the results were definitely a win.

Will Hoge Reveals More Details About NUMBER SEVEN!

Nashville singer/songwriter Will Hoge is primed to release his 7th studio album, NUMBER SEVEN, on Sept. 27 on Ryko.  Throughout his career, Hoge has survived and thrived through endless miles in vans and buses, landing a mainstream record deal early in his career and triumphantly overcoming a life-altering accident two years back.  If, as mentioned in Rolling Stone and elsewhere, Nashville has finally landed on the national rock and roll map, Hoge has been there all along.

Now, Hoge comes forth with NUMBER SEVEN, an album that poignantly captures his penchant for lonesome blues as well as country influences that have always been present in his music.  “Gone” would sound comfortably at home on contemporary country radio, while “No Man’s Land” is a twanging exposition of the gulf between men and women.  At the same time, Hoge’s poetic side is represented by two thought-provoking songs.  “American Dream,” a profile of a homeless man living amidst a devastated economy, gets right to the core of this tragic situation by stating “I’d give it all right back to just be looked at like a man.”  A similar claim to dignity suffuses the epic “Illegal Line,” which humanizes the oft-demagogued issue of immigration.

“People complain that there’s nothing from current musicians that has any sort of weight or political commentary,” says Hoge. “And I think rock and roll is a little lesser for that at this point.  So, I really wanted to go there on this album and talk about some things that aren’t necessarily being talked about by other artists right now.  I’m really proud of this album. Everything I’ve been through in the last couple of years has caused me to slow down and be more thoughtful about what sort of music I’m putting out. The process of creating music has changed too.  For the first time, I feel like this album really encompasses everything about me as an artist.  I’m just ready for everyone to hear it!”

The album’s grand finale, and first single, “When I Get My Wings”, looks to that other musical city in Tennessee for inspiration and lets Hoge uncork on a full-throated Otis Redding-style vocal with a heavenly host of Memphis-inspired horns.

Elephant Revival To Tour the Northeast Starting in September

Indie acoustic quintet Elephant Revival will tour the Northeast and beyond behind its sophomore release, BREAK IN THE CLOUDS (June 2011, Ruff Shod/Nettwerk Records), with praise for its songwriting, instrumentation, multi-genre style and spirit ringing in its ears.

The tour starts in mid-September, with dates in venues from New York City, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to Kentucky, Boston-area (return show) and Indiana.

Chicago Sun Times says, “The melodic, finely tuned songs are a tribute to the collaborative songwriting talents of each band member,” who are Bonnie Paine (vocals, washboard, djembe and musical saw), Sage Cook (electric banjo/guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, viola and vocals), Dango Rose (double-bass, mandolin, banjo and vocals), Daniel Rodriguez (acoustic guitar, electric banjo/guitar and vocals) and Bridget Law (fiddle and vocals).

The band plays a variety of folk instruments, from washboard to fiddle, electric banjo, djembe to musical saw, but the band goes further with originals that snap and sparkle with traditional balladry, Scottish/Celtic fiddle, psychedelic old-time, indie rock, rustic Americana, world beat, traditional jazz and an occasionally hip-hop beat.

“Elephant Revival is not five musicians supporting one songwriter, but friends in full collaboration for the betterment of music,” says The Huffington Post, “both their own and what folk means to modern America, which is inevitably embedded in the lyrical content.” BREAK IN THE CLOUDS was recorded in Lyons, Colo., and was produced by David Tiller (Taarka) in his studio, The Distillery.

“We have elements from many different styles of music. The cohesive quality comes from the honor and respect we hold for each other and our fans.” Rose told Relix magazine, which wrote, “The band’s multi-layered musical style comes from the various musical breeding grounds of its players” a particular quality that puts Elephant Revival far ahead of the rest of the crowd. “We create in service to the music,” Rose said. “We do not control what it is or what it will become.”
The band will play a special end of the summer concert at the State Bridge in Bond, Colo., with DeVotchKa and Gregory Alan Isakov on September 10.
