New Rubblebucket Mp3: "Michelle" (Beatles Cover)

Fresh off the release of the Triangular Daisies EP (Sin Duda Records), Rubblebucket is giving away the second track from the EP, “Michelle.” The track is the band’s left-field take on The Beatles’ Rubber Soul classic, which finds the band turning McCartney’s somber ballad into a spacey, orchestral groove. Download the track HERE. The band is currently on their “Triangular Tour,” which so far has taken the band from San Francisco to Maine and will end in Live Oak, FL for the Bear Creek Music Festival. After wrapping up this tour, the band will begin recording their next full-length with Eric Broucek (!!!, Holy Ghost!, Hercules and Love Affair) at DFA Studios in New York City, which should be released in early 2011.

Since the band formed in 2007, pinning down their sound has remained a difficult task.  At times, the band sounds like Brooklyn’s answer to Fela Kuti, with frenetic afrobeat rhythms rubbing elbows with infectious indie-pop hooks and catchy synths. Frontwoman/saxophonist Kalmia Traver explains, "We're children of this noisy age, with access to so much music from across time and space. We soak up all the sounds. What comes out can be unpredictable, but it will be uniquely ours."  Uniquely their own, indeed.

Regardless of where you place the band on the spectrum, the Triangular Daisies EP is a dramatic step forward for the band.  Opening with the title track, “Triangular Daisies” (listen HERE), the band pairs down the fiery grooves found on sophomore album Rubblebucketto craft a psychedelic indie-pop gem, complete with plaintive horns and infectious whistling. The EP also features the band’s undeniably contagious single “Came Out of a Lady,” (watch the video HERE) the recording of which was featured in the first episode of The Masters of Their Day project at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The Triangular Daisies EPends on a high note with the hypnotic live track “L’homme,” recorded during their set at Higher Ground this past May.

Rubblebucket started — like most great bands — at an art show in a defunct milk bottling plant in Burlington, VT.  Kalmia Traver met Alex Toth and soon formed Rubblebucket, building an eight-piece band from scratch with Toth as bandleader and trumpeter, and Traver taking on lead vocals and sax.  The band released their debut album, Rose’s Dream, as The Rubblebucket Orchestra in 2008.  The following year proved to be a big one for the band, with Rubblebucket releasing their self-titled sophomore album. SPIN hailed the band as a "must-hear artist from the 2009 CMJs,” and the band won that year’s Boston Music Award for Live Act of the Year. The band then relocated to Brooklyn, and has since been hard at work recording the follow-up to Rubblebucket, which is slated for release in early 2011.

Tapes N' Tapes at the Fox Theater

Tapes ‘n Tapes is a rock band from Minneapolis, MN, made up of Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion.

Grier said he formed the band in 2003, to “have fun with my friends.  I always wanted to see if I could play music with others and for others.”   Grier and his buddies amassed “tapes ‘n tapes” of noodling, experimental jams and declared themselves officially a band.

In the winter of 2004, the band now known as Tapes ‘n Tapes bought some recording equipment and headed out to a rustic cabin in the woods of Wisconsin.  They recorded their self-titled, now long out of print, seven song EP in three days.  Songs like “Beach Girls” and “50’s Parking” from the EP are still in their live set today.

Next up for the band was recording their critically acclaimed follow up, The Loon.  Appelwick recorded, mixed and produced the eleven song record with the band in one week at a friend’s home studio.  The Loon came out in November of 2005 on ibid records, and no one was ready for what came next.   People started to notice the foursome’s jangly, melodic brand of rock and the band started touring – gaining more and more attention from music critics and fans all over the world.  Even the Thin White Duke took notice.  “’Insistor’ is the first single, and it's cracking. It was a slow grower, but once that chorus digs in there's really no escape,” said Mr. David Bowie.  The prestigious XL Recordings re-released The Loon in July of 2006, the same month Tapes ‘n Tapes made their national television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The band then toured around the world for the next few years- playing shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Wrens.  In 2006 they were honored to play Reading/Leeds, and 2007 saw them rock out at Lollapalooza and Coachella.

When starting to work out songs for their follow up, Walk It Off, the band was asked who their dream producer was.  The obvious answer to them was Mr. Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT).  With twelve songs in hand, the band made the jaunt to upstate New York to live and work with Fridmann for two amazing weeks- one week in September 2007 to record and one week in October 2007 to mix.  However, years of touring, the political climate, and distance from friends and family had changed the band, and given them a different point of view- one that seemed to pervade their sound.  Spin praised the record saying, “the tunes are tighter and performances far more dynamic and aggressive…..they can now pull off jittery punk and understated, graceful melancholy.”  XL released Walk It Off in April of 2008, on the same day the band made their debut on Conan O’Brien.

After touring and supporting Walk It Off for the following year, it was time for a little R & R- rest and relaxation.  They purposefully took their time and tried to get back to a place where the band was fun, and not work.  They also decided to go back to their roots and do everything on their own, with no label involvement.  They cut ties with XL, and re-launched ibid records, their own label which initially released The Loon.  The brothers tapes had saved their pennies over the years and set out to make the record they’ve always wanted to make – Outside.  They wanted to record at home and self-produce, which they did over two weeks at The Terrarium in Minneapolis, MN in March of 2010.   The next step was getting the talented Mr. Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his ears to the mix.  Grier spent two more weeks in Bridgeport, CT, while Katis mixed the record to perfection.  The result is twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show.   Grier said, “We had a great time making Outside and we wanted our enjoyment of the process to be audible in the recording, and I think we succeeded.”  One thing is for sure, Tapes ‘n Tapes feel like they are making music for the right reasons – fun and pure love for music.  And as Grier always says, “Everything else is gravy.”  Outside will be released on January 11, 2011.

Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience

JASON BONHAM’S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE celebrates the life and music of his father--the legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

Blues at the Crossroads: The Robert Johnson Centennial Concerts

There’s no denying anyone who digs the Blues will really dig the once-in-a-lifetime experience that is BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS: THE ROBERT JOHNSON CENTENNIAL CONCERTS. The very special tour (set to launch in San Francisco on Jan. 28, 2011) and accompanying studio recording (to be released early 2011) commemorates the 100th Anniversary of legendary bluesman Robert Johnson’s birth with exhilarating collaborations between Big Head Todd & The Monsters, living Bluesman legend David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, and Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm. With Edwards on board, BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS has a direct connection back to the legend, as Edwards was in attendance for Johnson’s last live performance the night Johnson passed away.

“We both wanted to create a blues show that was not just another blues show, but a show that was truly unique,” said Blues at the Crossroads co-producer Ron Hausfeld, who is producing the tour with Ted Kurland Associates’ Jack Randall. “We want people to walk away saying, ‘Wow…that was cool…I’ve never seen anything like it.’”

Before the tour hits the road, BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS musicians meet this fall at Ardent Recording Studios in Memphis to put this epic collaboration to tape. The studio recordings will be released in early 2011 in conjunction with the tour.

BLUES AT THE CROSSROADS picks up the thread of Johnson’s legacy in Mississippi, at the junction of US Highways 61 & 49; the very crossroads where, as legend has it, Robert Johnson’s burning desire pushed him to make his deal with the devil – giving up his soul to write the baddest-ass blues the world had ever heard. One of the most famous Delta blues musicians, Johnson has influenced a broad range of musicians for generations with his songs, vocal phrasing and guitar style – in particular his landmark recordings from 1936-1937 that display a remarkable combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent. Eric Clapton has called Johnson “the most important blues singer that ever lived” and described Johnson's emotive vocal delivery as "the most powerful cry that I think you can find in the human voice." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an "Early Influence" in their first induction ceremony in 1986. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 in 1938 have given rise to much legend.

Performers:

Big Head Todd & The Monsters

Colorado rock band Big Head Todd & the Monsters (“Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Resignation Superman”) are known for their timeless songwriting, powerful live performances, and unique sound – all reasons the band has garnered a sizable loyal following during their two decades making music. Their landmark album, Sister Sweetly, produced numerous hit songs and went platinum in the United States following its release in 1993. Big Head Todd’s latest release is Rocksteady. The band name is a tribute to legendary blues/jazz "heads" (eg. Eddy Clean-head Vincent, etc). It was actually just a fluke, as they were scheduled to perform their first gig, but had no name. Frontman Todd Park Mohr came up with the name at the spur of the moment and it stuck. For more information: www.bigheadtodd.com

David “Honeyboy” Edwards

At age 95, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, the one-and-only Delta blues guitarist and singer (“Wind Howlin’ Blues,” “The Army Blues”) and his close friend, Pinetop Perkins (age 96), are the oldest Delta blues players still touring the United States. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi, and was a friend to Robert Johnson. He was present on the fateful night when Johnson died. Edwards was named the Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year at the 26th W.C. Handy Blues Awards in 2005 and earned Acoustic Artist of the Year honors in 2007 at The Blues Music Awards. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on January 31, 2010.For more information: www.davidhoneyboyedwards.com

Hubert Sumlin

Popular American blues guitarist and singer Hubert Sumlin is widely known for his celebrated work from 1955 as guitarist in Howlin' Wolf's band. His singular playing is characterized by "wrenched, shattering bursts of notes, sudden cliff-hanger silences and daring rhythmic suspensions.” Listed as number sixty-five in the Rolling Stone100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Sumlin, who continues to tour, is cited as a major influence by many artists, including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Hubert has cited Robert Johnson as one of his early influences, along with Muddy Waters, Charley Patton and Robert Lockwood. It has been stated that Sumlin's playing was a vital catalyst for the British blues boom by providing a link from the acoustic blues of the Mississippi delta that was more accessible to electric guitarists such as Clapton, Page, Richards and Beck. Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm

“Together, they combine the punch of old delta blues with funk, hip-hop and rock influences; one can hardly believe that this was actually recorded live in the studio with just two musicians.” – Houston Press on Burnside & Malcolm’s album, 2 Man Wrecking Crew

Drumming great Cedric Burnside, grandson of the legendary R.L. Burnside, son of drummer great Calvin Jackson, grew up at his grandfather's side and began touring at age 13, playing drums for "Big Daddy" on stages around the globe. Cedric has also brought his relentless, highly rhythmic charged style of drumming to performances with Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, and Bobby Rush. Bluesman Lightnin’ Malcolm is one of the leading, younger generation artists on the scene today. A reckless live performer, he has lived and breathed music his whole life, traveling and playing in a slashing, rhythmic style, with deep soulful vocals. Malcolm has played over the years with many of the best Mississippi blues artists, such as Cedell Davis, R.L. Burnside, Hubert Sumlin, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Jr. Kimbrough, Big Jack Johnson, Sam Carr and Otha Turner. Skilled on guitar, bass, and drums, Malcolm is an in demand session player with a telepathic sense of how to follow the older archaic styles, and is especially noted for his old-fashioned, church "shout" style on drums. 7 Walkers ft. Bill Kreutzmann & Papa Mali Pre-Release Listening Party

Famed drummer and Grateful Dead co-founder Bill Kreutzmann, guitar master Papa Mali, legendary New Orleans bass man George Porter Jr. (The Meters, Funky Meters) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball), come together as 7 Walkers for their self-titled debut release, due out November 2, 2010 on Response Records. Be among the first to hear the new album in its entirety on Thursday, October 28 at 9 PM EDT, exclusively at gdradio.net. You can also pre-order the album now only at www.7walkers.com.

With nearly all of its songs co-penned by Papa Mali and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, 7 Walkers is an electrifying hybrid of classic Bay Area rock and New Orleans funk. The highly anticipated release features a batch of brand-new originals, a guest performance by Willie Nelson on “King Cotton Blues,” and a few smokin’ instrumentals. A self-proclaimed “open love letter” to the city of New Orleans, the end result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture a unique collaboration between these very different musical shamans.

For both Kreutzmann and Papa Mali, 7 Walkers—whose name is borrowed from one of the band’s songs—is something of a dream come true. Kreutzmann has New Orleans in his DNA, literally—his mother was born there—and he’s always been partial to the city’s music. “I have a real feeling for that music and I get along with the folks down there really well,” he says.

The Crescent City, of course, also impacted native Louisianan Papa Mali incalculably. Although he grew up in Shreveport, he made frequent trips during his youth to New Orleans, where his mom’s family was from. “I bought my clothes and my records there, saw lots of live music there and began to forge my own personal style and musical identity in New Orleans,” he says.

The songwriting partnership between Robert Hunter and Papa Mali created undeniable chemistry. Their collaboration, says Kreutzmann, “reminds me very much, and not because of the personalities or anything, of Garcia and Hunter working together, in that really tight fashion. Those words, if you just read them, they’re fun stories, but when you put the music to them it sends them over the top.”

He’ll get no argument from Robert Hunter. “7 Walkers hit the ball so far out of the park it’s still sailing,” he says about the album. “It might actually have gone into orbit. I’m very proud to be part of the project. This album is sheer joy from first note to last.”

HAAM Benefit Day 2010 The Best Ever

The 5th Annual HAAM Benefit Day, held on Tuesday, September 21, brought in the largest amount of funds ever raised for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, its member-musicians and the healthcare service programs they participate in: $195,000, the organization reported today.

It was a record-breaking day all around, with the largest number of Austin area businesses making a donation or pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds — more than 200 — and the most musical performances (more than 140) heard on any HAAM Benefit Day.

“We at HAAM are incredibly pleased with the response to the fifth HAAM Benefit Day,” said Keith Carmichael, HAAM Benefit Day 2010 Committee chairman. “The number of businesses and the number of entertainers participating — not to mention the amount of funds raised, the largest ever — shows us how much this city and the people in it appreciate live music and what this organization is doing to make sure it flourishes.”

In addition to acknowledging Whole Foods Market for its generosity in serving for five consecutive years as HAAM Benefit Day presenting sponsor, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians is grateful for the tens of thousands of dollars donated not only by Whole Foods Market but also by C3 Presents and South by Southwest® over the years of HAAM Benefit Day.
It also recognizes Texas Heritage Songwriters Association for its donation that matched the contribution of the Austin community on September 21 as residents ate out, shopped and donated on behalf of their favorite music-makers.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians also announced today the date for the 6th Annual HAAM Benefit Day: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, when business, the music community and residents will again unite to keep music alive and well in Austin.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides access to affordable healthcare services to Austin’s low-income, uninsured working musicians with a focus on prevention and wellness. Since HAAM’s 2005 start, more than 2,200 of the city’s battalion of hard-working musicians have joined and gained access to regular, cost-effective healthcare services. Medical, dental, mental, hearing and vision health services are provided by Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Foundation, The SIMS Foundation, Estes Audiology and Prevent Blindness Texas. HAAM’s annual Corporate Battle of the Bands and HAAM Benefit Day have become signature events behind a great cause: maintaining the health of the musicians who help make Austin such an enviable place to live and work. Crytal Castles @ Boulder Theater | New Years Eve

Formed
in 2003 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Crystal Castles consists of
producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. They are named after the
lyrics "The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles" and "Crystal
Castles, the source of all power" both from the theme song for She-Ra's
fortress. They are known for their melancholic lo-fi sound and their
explosive live shows. Their debut album was included in NME's "Top 50
Albums of the Decade".

Crystal Castles musical style has been
described as "ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped two-dimensional
Gameboy glitches and bruising drum bombast that pierces your skull with
their sheer shrill force, burrowing deep into the brain like a fever".
The band has headlined numerous tours in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and
Australia and have also appeared at festivals around the Globe
including Ireland's Oxegen Festival, Coachella, All Points West, Leeds
Festival in England and will also take part in Australia's "Big Day
Out" 2011 Tour.

The music and live show of the Crystal Castles is not one to miss. As the band themselves say,

"we are crystal castles
we are 1 boy and 1 girl
we are named after She-Ra's home
we play rough
"
