Cursive to Support Alkaline Trio on Spring Tour Dates

Cursive will support Alkaline Trio on their upcoming spring tour dates, which will take the band across the country and back beginning February 16th at the Glass House in Pomona, CA, and wrapping up April 2nd at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA.

Since the release of their sixth studio album Mama, I'm Swollen on Saddle Creek Records last March, Cursive has crisscrossed the country multiple times as a headliner. The band - long known for their indefatigable touring schedule as well as their incendiary, cathartic live show - completed their most recent tour in mid-December. Cursive's shows throughout 2009 drew acclaim, with Indianapolis, IN's Nuvo Weekly remarking, "Opening with 'Bloody Murderer' from their breakthrough album The Ugly Organ, the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums" and Melophobe declaring, "Cursive has proved that they are not only solid musicians, but incredible performers with a stamina that can be matched by few."

Cursive also released videos for three songs off of Mama, I'm Swollen over the past ten months: "From The Hips" (here); "I Couldn't Love You" (here); and "Let Me Up" (here). The band also made their much-deserved network television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 13, 2009 (watch it here).

DOUG KEITH: "The Lucky Ones"

Doug Keith, an exceptional artist and performer, is set to release his new full-length, The Lucky Ones, in March, 2010 (exact date tbc).  The Lucky Ones, an 11-song collection on indie imprint The Village Label, vividly showcases Keith’s strengths as a guitarist and songwriter, capturing significant emotional truths in every song.

The material on The Lucky Ones ranges from the acoustic starkness of "We Left Everything," to the surging electricity of "The Lucky Ones," to the buoyant textures of "Skip James Radio." His simple-yet-poignant lyrics are layered over soaring instrumental arrangements that are expertly tailored to create distinct aural atmospheres. The link connecting each track is Keith’s weathered, knowing voice, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.

Although The Lucky Ones is only his second full-length solo album, Keith is no stranger to the studio or the life of a touring musician.  Music has been his passion for years, and it shows in the beauty and intimacy of his current work. Keith started his career playing bass with punk trio The Gods Hate Kansas, and went on to play with several other punk/avant-garde bands, including noted noise-rock combo Up the Empire.  But Keith always worked on his own material, releasing a four-song EP and half of a split 7" single under the name The First Person to See an Elephant.  Here’s to Outliving Me, his official solo debut in January of 2009, was the first release under his own name and his introduction to international audiences. With The Lucky Ones, Keith delivers a moving batch of songs that are a worthy follow-up – and natural progression – to his stunning debut.

Keith’s songs are honest and the emotions are pure, and this comes across in his raw beautiful live performances.

Grayson Capps | Live At The Paradiso

Hailing from South Alabama and spending over a decade in New Orleans, acclaimed singer-songwriter Grayson Capps has found listeners the world over enthralled by his stinging tales of the Southern Gothic. Nowhere is this more evident than in Holland where his shows draw impassioned fans who hang on every lyric.

In May 2008, Grayson headlined the legendary Amsterdam music venue, The Paradiso, for a solo acoustic performance. Playing for over two hours, he enthralled the audience with stories from his life and song favorites from the entirety of his repertoire, including "Get Back Up," "Poison," "Washboard Lisa" and "A Love Song For Bobby Long."

The performance was captured on a high definition five camera video shoot, but inexplicably the master footage disappeared shortly thereafter. Just as inexplicably, a DVD from the filming turned up this summer at the Hyena Records' Amsterdam office.

The footage has been rescued for release and, as a memento to fans, it will finally be available on December 8 as DVD entitled Live At The Paradiso.  A companion audio recording of the performance will also be released as an mp3 exclusive album download at all major digital music stores.

Marco Benevento | Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency

At the outset of 2008, Marco Benevento took over New York City's then brand new Greenwich Village music venue, Sullivan Hall, for a month-long residency. He would call it home for five Thursday nights in January, inviting a who's who in modern jazz and improvisational rock music to play with him each week in a different configuration.

Hauling his own baby grand piano from his Brooklyn apartment to the Sullivan Hall stage for the event, Benevento led his musical co-conspirators through two sets a night of daring and consistently breathtaking improvisations. Whether it was the Bitches Brew-esque sonic explorations of his collaboration with Steven Bernstein, Bobby Previte and DJ Olive, the glorious post rock ferocity of a line-up with Brad Barr and Joe Russo or Benevento's own regular trio with Reed Mathis and Andrew Barr celebrating the release of their debut album Invisible Baby, every set took on a life all its own.

As the sold out crowds that gathered for each week's performance will attest, these shows were the stuff of legend in the recent history of downtown New York City's music scene. Thankfully, director Karina Mackenzie captured all five nights on high definition video along with multi-track recordings and artist interviews that are now available on a DVD release from The Royal Potato Family entitled Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency. While it's Marco Benevento's name at the top of the billing, what the film portrays is a family of fearless, faithful, one-of-a-kind artists making some of the most vital music of their time.

Live Dead | The Starry Plough | 10.10.09

Live Dead were quite the frequenters of the Starry Plough in the Spring and early parts of the summer of 2009. During a short hiatus away from Berkeley the band toured other parts of California such as South Lake Tahoe, Eureka, and the famous Brookdale Lodge in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Here We Go Magic Release Black Cab LIVE Session

It's been a big year for Here We Go Magic following the release of their much celebrated self-titled debut (Western Vinyl), and now they have their sights firmly set on 2010 with a new album, a new record label, and an ever expanding sound. Having just signed to Secretly Canadian, the band is targeting Spring of 2010 to release their highly anticipated follow-up to 2009's breakthrough record.

The band have spent much of the year on the road touring with indie giants including Grizzly Bear and are currently supporting The Walkmen before playing Austin City Limits.

Here We Go Magic are also hard at work recording the self-produced sophomore album in a house they've commandeered in upstate New York, and while the first record was the result of Luke Temple getting creative in his bedroom, this release is a fully fledged team effort.

With an eye towards 2010 the band is looking forward to expanding their audience as their unique sound continues to permeate throughout the indie world.

The Last Waltz LIVE @ Boulder Theater

Back in 2005, Denver's number one "jamband", Polytoxic, wanted to put on a show that could showcase all the great local musicians they had been playing with for the past few years.  They decided to re-enact The Band's "The Last Waltz", a concert film by Martin Scorsese from 1978 of The Band's last performance that included all of that era's greatest musicians - Eric Clapton, Dr John, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, etc.  Polytoxic’s show was held at Dulcinea's in Denver's Capitol Hill area on May 25, 2005, and Polytoxic planned on it being a fun little show that would garner a little bit of interest.  It sold out in minutes, surprising band and fans alike, and became the biggest show they had ever thrown.  So big, in fact, they decided to do it again in 2005, this time on the night before Thanksgiving at Cervante's Masterpiece Ballroom.

Polytoxic's "The Last Waltz Revisited" immediately went from a "fun little" idea at a small venue to their biggest event of the year.  It has become an annual event, playing to capacity crowds.  This year marks the 5th anniversary of their "Last Waltz Revisited", and it boasts over 40 guest musicians from the Colorado area (and a few from other cities), a full horn section, and over 30 songs from The Band’s extensive catalog, focusing primarily on songs played at The Last Waltz.  It has become a tradition for many of those involved in the show, as well as for many of the people that come out and see the show year after year.

This year, the show has been added for the first time in Boulder, at the Boulder Theater.  The plan is to bring in many Boulder-area musicians to participate, and start an annual tradition there as well, bringing the musical community together and giving something back to the community as a whole.

Polytoxic's "The Last Waltz Revisited" will be performed in Boulder at The Boulder Theater (2032 14th St, 303-786-7030), Friday November 20th. Doors are at 8pm and show starts at 9:30 with Buck Perigo performing Arlo Guthrie’s entire “Alice’s Restaurant”.  Tickets are $15.00/advance, $18.50/day of show.  For ticket info go to http://www.bouldertheater.com/boxoffice.php or call the theater.
