The Dodos at Fox Theatre | 09.27.11

The drums hit you in the chest first, spraying your speakers like swift gunshots. But then Meric Long’s finger-picked chords kick in, cascading across Logan Kroeber’s brass knuckle beats like only the best Dodos songs can.

This forward motion feeling has driven the duo since 2005, but several key changes lift their fourth LP (No Color) to another level. For one thing, the band reunited with Portland producer John Askew, the man behind the boards of the Dodos’ first two full-lengths,Beware of the Maniacs and Visiter. Having an old friend around was like adding an honorary third member; a voice of reason who can isn’t afraid of vetoing ill-fated ideas. Ideas like glossy layers of vibraphone that lost their luster halfway through.

The main focus of No Color was to bottle the frenzied folk approach that’s been there since the beginning. And it works damn well, from the dagger-drawing dynamics and brain-burrowing choruses of “Black Night” to the hairpin turns and splashy percussion of “Good.” And then there are the songs that’ll make you want to dub old episodes of 120 Minutes, including the instrumental break of “Don’t Stop” and the sneak attack solo that weaves its way around the steely rhythms of “Don’t Try and Hide It.”

“I have a love for ‘90s riffs that I haven’t gotten to showcase in this band,” says Long. “The most fun I had with this record was when I got to strap on the electric guitar and come up with Billy Corgan riffs while the tape was rolling.”

There’s less room for error than there’s ever been.  “We’re more naked this way,” explains Long. “You can hide a lot of your mistakes on an acoustic, but with an electric, every single note is much louder and more piercing. So I have to be way more on top of my playing now.”

Tony Adamo's What Is Hip

The recording of the song "What is Hip" on singer/songwriter, Tony Adamo's new CD (entitled WHAT IS HIP) came from a suggestion made by the legendary horn player and Tower of Power co-founder, Stephen "Doc" Kupka. During a recording session with Adamo and his producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker, "Doc" suggested several TOP songs Adamo might want to cover. Adamo choose "What is Hip" and "This Time it's Real." Kupka, along with jazz great, Eddie Henderson hold up the horn section on "Hip." In the re-grooved "This Time It's Real," Mic Gillette, funk icon in his own right, wrote the horn arrangement and plays (trumpet & trombone) along with TOP horn member, Tom E. Poltzer (tenor sax). Poltzer plays lead solo with "Doc" Kupka on bari sax.

Talk about a kool struttin' and soul funkin' sound. Adamo is deep in the groove on these two Tower of Power hits. Producer/guitarist, Jerry Stucker loaded up the WHAT IS HIP CD with big city cool. Phish: Coral Sky Amphitheater (audio & video!)

On October 19th, JEMP Records will release Coral Sky, a 2-DVD set capturing Phish’s November 2, 1996 performance at Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL. The complete, uncut concert was created from archival videotapes of the multi-camera lawn screen feed and the audio was mixed from multi-track masters in stereo PCM and 5.1 surround.

Amid the swaying palms and soft breezes of South Florida, the two-and-a-half hour plus concert showcased some of the most unique and compelling playing of the band’s career, including a transcendent pairing of “Crosseyed And Painless” and “Run Like An Antelope.” Santana’s Karl Perazzo was featured on percussion throughout the show. Perazzo, who had become acquainted with the band members during their 1992 and 1996 summer tours with Santana, added polyrhythms that explored new space within Phish's music in this deeply experimental show. Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks sat in for the encore, “Funky Bitch.”

THE BLACK BUTTERFLIES Tuesday, September 7th 9 PM at NUBLU

While this is just the debut release from The Black Butterflies, a group led by 27-year-old saxophonist Mercedes Figueras, veterans would do well to prick up their ears and take note. The Butterflies deftly blend the Latin rhythms of Figueras' native Argentina with free and post-bop noodling and tantalizing natural-world percussive elements, into full, invigorating music that sprouts, twines and flourishes over the 63-minute span of this entirely satisfying album.

The title track kicks off the record. It is a relaxed, comfortably humid piece that sways from a melodic opening into more forceful strains on the wind of Figueras' sax and swingingly persistent conga thumps. The piece never reaches--nor even strives for--the anthemic quality the title might suggest. Instead, the labor sweats happily, singingly under the sun. Appropriately, the tune--and, thus, the album--takes flight on the crystalline wings of Dan Tepfer's echoing, solo keyboard statement. It's appropriate not only for fashioning a sly musical equivalence to the band's moniker, but by spotlighting in Tepfer one of the group's, well, keys. Tepfer's polished electric tones lace the Latin rhythms and strings them up on a brightly modern line that still never smoothes the crisp, pulsing edges of the traditional beats. As mentioned, it's this facile navigation of divergent musical fields and the ability to rake loose from the passage a lively new hybrid that makes listening to The Black Butterflies so palpably intriguing. Ears laugh at their good fortune.

"Afro Blue," with its inevitable rekindling of saxophonist John Coltrane's spirit, also sparks the ghost of Albert Ayler, the twining sax statements of Figueras and her (even more?) experimental mate, Tony Larokko, rendering the Coltrane vehicle as a mighty, squealing, squawking, melodically impassioned conversation between the lost giants of the avant-garde. The saxophonists pause for a breather midway through, revealing front and center the rolling-thunder percussion the listener's body already knew was there. Tepfer contributes another light yet zinging solo over the drums before backing off to give conga man Bopa "King" Carre, percussionist Fred Berryhill and drummer Kenny Wollesen even more space to break loose and rumble.

The first of Figueras' two original pieces on the album, "Pipi's Blues," follows "Afro Blue" with the type of jumping cadence saxophonist Joe Henderson might have favored with the mid 1960s support of pianists McCoy Tyner or Andrew Hill. Only here Tepfer remains electric, adding the swirling bluesy punch of organist Jimmy Smith, while also not refusing to jut off on Larry Young-like angular departures.

Larokko contributes the next two numbers, "Spiritual Travels" and "Yah-Yah," the first a jolting, percussion-heavy piece full of strong repeated sax figures that again recall the journeys of Ayler. The latter, the album's most experimental piece, evolves from whistles and an array of percussion instruments that erupt into a cacophony of insect and animal noises--nature's nighttime rhythm section--that in turn give way to the African chants that supply the song's title and the singing of Figueras. Her voice is strong yet slightly coarse and splintered like the timbre of her sax, relating in insistent, desperate Spanish the tragic tale of "Los Ojos Azules," a Bolivian song popularized by the late Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, while accompanied by an increasingly complex and urgent layering of rhythmic human voices and drums. The whole ultimately explodes into a screeching battle of horns--the saxophones' cries themselves sounding almost human at times--that burns out through extended, passionate playing, leaving only the snaps and twangs of nature and the soft, compelling "Yah-yah, Yah-yah" chants of dancers or workers.

Yet, lest it be thought the band has gone irrevocably, unrestrainably tribal, it closes on the infectious Figueras piece, "Music Heals All Wounds," a soulful "Auld Lang Syne" with Caribbean accents. (To belabor the Ayler connection--or to kill it, finally--this most certainly is not "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe.") Figueras' tune delivers as advertised--a warming salve that demands multiple healing doses on the spot, then lingers, replaying itself for hours in the listener's brain to pleasant, calming effect.

Yes, this is the debut release from a new band whose young leader has issued only one other record under her name, Elefante (2007), a free-improv set from Figueras and drummer Martín Visconti. But make no mistake, 1 de Mayo also happens to be one of the best overall records of 2010.

Performing Artist Jill King To Release New Album RAIN ON FIRE

Songstress Jill King releases on April 6 a new studio album, RAIN ON FIRE (Foundher Records), which the artist describes as life-changing for its renewal of her passion for music and for life and as a gift for listeners who might need a similar lift upward.

The new CD is a collection of heartfelt and thought-provoking love songs and ballads written and co-written by King that mesh blues, pop, R&B, country and jazz into her solid folk-rock sound, elevated by her stunning vocals and the slide and steel guitar vibe of Australian Michael Flanders, who produced the album with King.

It includes “Beautiful World,” “California” and “I’ll Keep Loving You” — three songs that reflect King’s life journey through joy and sorrow — as well as “Mark on Me,” which features a spoken-word intro and outro by Steven Johnson, the grandson of blues legend Robert Johnson, and the sensual “Undertow,” which was featured in the February 26 episode of the Web soap “Venice The Series.”

King and Flanders were joined in the studio by an array of respected musicians and friends including Congress House Studios’ Mark Hallman on bass, drums, loops, percussion, B3 and piano as well as Brady Blade (drums, percussion), Victor Broden (bass), Jason Millhouse (fat guitars), Bruce Holloway (guitar), Phil Madeira (piano, accordion, B3), Savannah Jo Lack (violin, string arrangement & performance), Rob Mackay (strings, tenor ukulele), Denise Locke (keyboards), Alex Torrez and Ben Flanders (percussion), and Thom Flora, Doug Stokes and Nels Andrews (background vocals) and a gospel choir made up of Marsha Hancock, Alana Griffith, Christina Taddonio.

A special-edition version of the CD includes a fascinating book by King that intricately details the impetus behind each of the songs, an essay on the making of the album and documentary photography by Nashville-based artist Whitney Jones.

King will put together a band for extensive touring behind the album that includes shows through August across the Southeast and California and Texas.

Born and raised in deep-South Arab, Ala., King was singing solos in church at 3 and was playing guitar and writing songs by age 10, when she made her first record at a local studio. Being surrounded by heaven-and-hell ideologies and later her brother’s death from cancer have influenced her life, her songwriting and her sound: a mix of genres, moods and messages.

Bing and Ruth Premiere Debut Single "Rails"

Brooklyn band Bing and Ruth is an 11-piece ensemble led by composer and pianist David Moore.  Described by the New York Times as "making the most of layered and atmospheric melody," the band utilizes clarinets, voices, cellos, and a buffet of other acoustic instruments to craft expansive soundscapes and quiet microtonal textures.  Formed among friends in 2006, they have self-released two records, the "Bing and Ruth" EP in 2006, and the full-length "Kentile Floors" in 2007.

In it's young life the ensemble has garnered a reputation for unique and engaging life performances, with recent shows in the New York area including the Wordless Music Series, the MATA Festival, the WFMU Festival, Stochastic Brooklyn, and the Darmstadt New Music Series at Issue Project Room.  They have shared the stage with a wide variety of performers among whom include Múm, Max Richter, and So Percussion.

Additionally they have become known for their habit of performing in unique spaces not normally associated with music; places like an abandoned meat locker, a rural chicken coop, a vacant apartment, and a warehouse rooftop.

David, along with Bing and Ruth, was recently commissioned to create two new multimedia works with filmmaker Sébastien Cros that saw their premier at the 2009 MATA Festival in New York City.

The ensemble has recently completed work on a new full-length album with an expected release in 2010.

The Motet perform "The Best of Halloween"

We are very excited to announce that on January 22nd and 23rd The Motet will be performing "The Best of Halloween" at CERVANTES' MASTERPIECE BALLROOM'S Grand Re-Opening 7th Anniversary Party. For these shows we will be featuring the fantastic vocalist JEN DURKIN (Deep Bannana Blackout, Mickey Hart Band, Bernie Worell Band) and the slamming east coast horn duo of Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis (Soulive, Lettuce), aka "THE SHADY HORNS".  Get ready for these guys to blow the roof off the joint!  We are also extremely excited about the virtuosic guitarist DAN LEBOWITZ (ALO, magicgravy) coming in from San Francisco to join us for these two epic nights of great music!

And as this is somewhat of a reunion gig for us, don't be surprised to see our old friend and guitarist Ryan Jalbert (Brett Dennen Band) up there rocking out. Also, flying in direct from Portland Oregon will be vocalist exraordinaire Jans Ingber. And, per usual, we will have Motet regulars: Garrett Sayers on bass, Joey Porter on keys, Dave Watts on drums, Scott Messersmith on percussion, Gabe Mervine on trumpet, Kim Dawson on vocals, Matt Pitts on bari, and perhaps a few others yet to be named...

Yes folks! You heard it right, this will be a 13 member band including a four piece horn section, three vocalists, two guitars, and percussion. The concept, of course, will be for us to perform music by the artists of our past Halloween shows: Talking Heads, Tower of Power, Jamiroquai, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, and Herbie Hancock. This is going to be a once in a lifetime band, so please get your tickets soon.

Now as a added bonus, MAGICGRAVY, the ever exciting trio of Dave, Dan, and Garrett will be opening both nights! Be ready for some mad-improv-soul-jazz insanity to warm your body up...
