Ronnie Penque: Only Road Home

You know him as bassist for the world famous New Riders of the Purple Sage. When not touring the country with The New Riders, Ronnie has been busy working with his solo project The Ronnie Penque Band. Now Ronnie and his band have released their first debut CD, ONLY ROAD HOME. The tracks of this classic Americana rock album are filled with great song writing, infectious grooves, sweet vocals, harmonies and a good old school feel. ONLY ROAD HOME is a hook-laden record with catchy melodies rocked out by Penque*s band.  This record will leave Classic Rock fans singing the songs for weeks.  The blend of Jam band, Rock, R&B, with a taste of Gospel, Country and a "Little Soul* will appeal to fans from The Grateful Dead, Tom Petty to The Eagles.  Penque’s song  writing has elements of  the greats before him like Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter. His voice brings back memories of Don Henley, Jerry Garcia, or Paul Simon. ONLY ROAD HOME is a fresh sounding old school Classic Rock album set to delight Classic Rock, Pop and Jamband fans alike.

The Ronnie Penque Band will be doing a string of CD release parties and shows in the Northeast

Jan 8th 2011 at 9 PM:  Mexicali Live, 1409 Queen Anne Road Teaneck, NJ 07666 Tickets can be purchased at www.mexicalilive.com

The Ronnie Penque Band is led by singer and bassist, Ronnie Penque. The band includes Ron's brother, Chris Penque on rhythm guitar, Jeff Pearlman on keys and vocals, Katie Pearlman on drums and vocals, and Andy Trister on lead guitar.  CD Available at www.ronniepenque.com

Ronnie's Bio:

Ronnie is best known as the bass player and vocalist of the world famous New Riders of the Purple Sage. When not working with NRPS Ronnie spends time with his solo project RONNIE PENQUE BAND which includes his brother Chris Penque on guitar, Andy Trister on lead guitar, Jeff Pearlman on keys and vocals, and Katie Pearlman on drums and vocals.

Ronnie started his music career as the original bass player in the popular New Jersey Grateful Dead cover band, Ripple. Ripple was formed in 1978. During the Ripple years Penque would also moonlight with other bands like Wig Jam and Splintered Sunlight. After Ripple retired in 2003, Ronnie was asked by keyboardist Melvin Seals of The Jerry Garcia Band to join his band, "Melvin Seals and JGB". Ronnie toured with Melvin and JGB for 3 years as lead singer and bassist. Penque then joined up with Buddy Cage and Johnny Markowski in Stir Fried which led to the reforming of The New Riders of the Purple Sage in 2005.Ronnie and the New Riders play over100 shows per year throughout the United States and Canada.

If the name Penque is familiar, Ron's uncle the late Romeo Penque was one of the most famous woodwind and flute players in the music industry who was best known for his work with Miles Davis. At age 12 Ronnie was taught to play bass by his father Ron Penque Sr., an accomplished session bass player for 20 years, who gave Ronnie his 57 Precision bass (Dads Bass) upon his retirement. Some of Ronnie's musical influences are The Grateful Dead*s Phil Lesh, NRPS bass player Dave Torbert, Donald Duck Dunn, John Entwistle, Paul McCartney and Jack Casady, among others.

Through the years Ron has also played with many other bands and great musicians including Bobby Weir, Mickey Hart, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, Melvin Seals, Robert Hunter, Wig Jam, Splintered Sunlight, Jeff Austin, Neon Gods, Stir Fried, John Popper, Jeff Mattson, John Dawson, Tony Trischka, Pete Sears, Buddy Cage,David Nelson, Barry Sless, Keller Wiliams, Donna Jean Godchaux, Jeff Pevar, Tom Constanten, Michael Falzarano, Johnny Markowski, Mark Karen, Jack Casady, GE Smith, Mookie Siegel, Pinetop Perkins and Tex Logan.

Kids of Widney High Release Full-Length Documentary

“After I take over the world, I want to learn how to play the bass,” says effervescent, long-time Kids of Widney High member Cain Fonseca. One of nine singer/songwriters, Cain is a young adult from East LA with developmental disabilities who—along with the rest of the Kids—writes, records, and performs his own unique brand of rock music.

Begun in 1988 at special-education high school Joseph P. Widney High, the Kids grew out of an adaptive songwriting class that is still in operation today and continues to churn out specialized musicians and singers, some of whom have formed their own permutation of “Kids of Widney High”-esque bands.

Having in the past been compared to the likes of: Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Langley Schools Music Project, and Florence Foster Jenkins, the Kids of Widney High have been covered in both concert performances and on album recordings by such hot bands as: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Aquabats, and Osaka Popstar (comprised of members of: the Ramones, the Misfits, and Black Flag). They also boast a dedicated fanbase that includes everyone from Marilyn Manson and Fiona Apple to actor James Garner and filmmaker Spike Jonze. Playing the LA leg of the Warped Tour some years back, a prominent record producer handed to the Kids their first album—made by an earlier lineup of members—that had at one time been owned by Kurt Cobain.

In the past, the Kids have worked with musical luminaries Jackson Browne (who assisted them with the recording of the second of four albums they have out to date), Mr. Bungle/Faith No More frontman Mike Patton (who took them on their first tour along with Bungle, and who put out a Kids album on indie pioneering label Ipecac), and various producers/writers from South Park who worked with the Kids and a similar group, MTV’s How’s Your News, on a television pilot some years back. The Kids were also prominently featured in comedic hit film The Ringer starring Johnny Knoxville and Katherine Heigl.

Having now broadened their artistic endeavors to encapsulate: fine art, films, music videos, short documentaries of their own, creative writings, poetry, and fashion designs, the Kids decided upon taking their first headlining, full-length tour up the West Coast (from Los Angeles to Seattle and back) two summers ago. Along the way, the Kids played a number of gigs at high-profile venues, made time for local print/online media syndicates and radio shows, exhibited their artwork and short films, and read their writings (including one oration at Beat epicenter City Lights in San Francisco).

Sponsored in part by Sony PlayStation, this tour was also an opportunity for the majority of Kids members—all of whom come from financially challenged backgrounds—to see a world outside of the city of Los Angeles. But, as Kids member (and self-proclaimed “class clown”) Peewee proudly intones, “We’re not here to tell a sob story. No! We’re having fun. Are you having fun?”

Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a vibrant, life-affirming, funny, and wholly compassionate film that explores just what happens when a specialized group of artists such as the Kids of Widney High finally take to the road as they visit new cities and peoples, teaching their fans about the changing world of the disabled community at large. Along the way, the Kids fight, they love, they grow apart and together, they party—as do all raucous rock bands on such rapid-fire tours!—and come out the other end, as Kids frontman Shelly Goodhope says of himself, “A better man.”

Supplemented by over ten years of footage from various venues, fans, groupies, and the Kids themselves, Act Your Age is also an incredibly intimate portrait of a subculture that has been for far too long misunderstood and, ultimately, disenfranchised in the eyes of the general mainstream public.

Comparable to such independent mainstay music documentaries as: Dig!, End of the Century, and Fugazi’s Instrument, Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a poignant and often funny look at a group of artists who are ready to challenge conventional notions about persons with disabilities and contemporary art in America today.

It’s time for everyone to see the world through the eyes of a Kid!

Keller Williams Announces NYE Run, SPCA Benefit show

Keller Williams has announced plans for a set of very special East Coast New Year’s Eve concerts. Starting on December 29 in Virginia and concluding on NYE in North Carolina (details below), each show on the “Celebrate the Holidays” run will feature three sets built around a different theme. Set I will be reggae, dub and funk versions of Keller favorites with Jay Starling on keys, Mark D on drums and Keller on bass. Set II will feature the bluegrass stylings of Larry Keel on guitar and his wife Jenny on bass with Keller playing his mini twelve-string (wanna-be mandolin) guitar. And Set III will be old school Keller on acoustic guitar with his trademark looped-out dance grooves. Big screen video visuals will be provided by Scott Sunn.

Before the NYE run kicks-off, Keller bring his three-set extravaganza to his hometown of Fredericksburg, VA for his annual holiday concert to benefit the SPCA. To celebrate the ten year anniversary of the event, which will take place on December 26 at the Fredericksburg Field House, Keller has invited local marching band Elby Brass to join the show for set break music. 100% of the concert’s profits will go to support The Fredericksburg Regional SPCA. Less than 3% of The Fredericksburg Regional SPCA’s budget is received from the City of Fredericksburg, forcing the branch to rely almost solely on individual and corporate donations and fundraising events like this. The Fredericksburg Regional SPCA is a “no-kill” shelter whose mission is to tackle the problem of pet overpopulation through education, adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter.

Keller’s SPCA benefit show and NYE run will cap a very busy year for one of the hardest working men in music. May saw the release of his acclaimed all covers album Thief featuring Larry and Jenny Keel. Praised by Blurt as "impressive.... a great effort that's bound to bring in a few more fans,” the album features completely retooled versions of songs by everyone from Amy Winehouse to Ryan Adams. Moving from covers to kiddos, Keller’s latest album finds him breaking into the world of children’s music with the appropriately titled Kids. A sure hit for parents and children alike, Kids is due October 26 via SCI Fidelity, this will be Keller Williams’ sixteenth album.

Keller will tour in support of Kids with select November dates in the Pacific Northwest as the “Super Music Friend” on the Yo Gabba Gabba tour. Keller will also be playing for older kids with evening shows in the same cities. Prior to the Kids tour Keller will be touring theaters all over the country, details below.

Keller Williams Picks the Winner for Keller On Your Couch

When Keller Williams announced the release of his first-ever all-covers collection, Thief, last spring. He also launched the much talked about “Keller and The Keels On Your Couch” contest. In the contest, anyone who ordered Thief via www.kellerwilliams.net was entered to win a chance for a 90 minute private acoustic performance by Keller and The Keels in the winner’s living room for them and up to 49 of their friends.

Now, five months and many entries later, Keller releases the name of the lucky winner of the “Keller and The Keels On Your Couch” contest. Watch the video of Keller himself picking and announcing the winner.

Recorded with the Keels—husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny Keel—Thief (May 25, 2010 SCI Fidelity Records) includes songs originally written and recorded by as wildly diverse an assemblage as anyone’s ever likely to dream up. Thief offers up Keller-versions of songs by an [almost] unthinkable collection of artists from: Amy Winehouse (“Rehab”) to the Grateful Dead (“Mountains of the Moon”), the Butthole Surfers (“Pepper”) to Kris Kristofferson (“Don’t Cuss That Fiddle,” which opens the album, and “The Year 2003 Minus 25,” which closes the album). The set is filled out with tunes by Ryan Adams, the Presidents of the United States of America, the Raconteurs, Patterson Hood, Danny Barnes, Cracker, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Marcy Playground. All over the place, indeed, but that’s the way Williams likes it. And in his hands it all makes sense—like everything he’s ever touched, whether from his own pen or someone else’s, it all becomes Keller Williams' music.

Look for Keller on tour now. www.kellerwilliams.net

Greensky Bluegrass Performs with Grateful Dead Drummers, Announces NYE Run in Denver

As summer fades and autumn arrives, the music of Greensky Bluegrass is piquing new ears and peaking out. This past weekend at the Hoxeyville Festival in Northern Michigan, the band offered the crowd of thousands two surprise guests to close out their Saturday night show by inviting the Grateful Dead drumming duo of Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart on stage for a bluegrass-infused version of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider”. The set closing sit-in was filmed and can be viewed on YouTube here:

Additionally, Greensky Bluegrass announced today that the quintet will be ringing in the New Year in Denver, Colorado with two nights of raging bluegrass at Cervantes' Other Side December 30 and 31. Tickets for both shows will go on sale September 6 at www.cervatnesmasterpiece.com or www.greenskybluegrass.com with special hotel rates available for fans at the band’s website.

To celebrate the New Year’s Eve announcement and the special guest appearance of the Rhythm Devils over the weekend, the band wants to share a free download from their most recent double live CD All Access: Volume 1. For a limited time, an extended 13 minute version of the song “Train Junkie” is available for a free download here.
