Pop Montreal News : Free Arcade Fire Show

We are happy to announce a very special BIG SHOW we have planned for the 10th anniversary of the POP Montreal festival. SiriusXM Canada will present and broadcast a free outdoor show by The Arcade Fire on Thursday, September 22nd, at the place des Festivals of Quartier des Spectacles in downtown Montreal. The show is a grand thank you by The Arcade Fire to Montreal, Quebec and Canada and will celebrate an amazing year for the band where they toured the world in support of their outstanding record, The Suburbs, and won awards for album of the year at The Junos, The Brits, and The Grammys. "Our band couldn't exist without Montreal. After having had the chance to tour extensively around the world, we're very excited to finally come home. And to do so the Montreal way, we hoped to play a free outside show, on the very last day of summer as a big 'Thank you' to the beautiful city we love so much", says Régine Chassagne, member of The Arcade Fire, "We're happy to be a part of the 10th anniversary of POP Montreal. And we're proud to play a role in the French release of Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains, (Soulever les montagnes) -a book that has influenced our lives and our careers. Hoping to see you at the show… we're crossing our fingers for great weather." Montreal's own Karkwa, 2010 Polaris Prize winners, will open up the event.

We would like to thank our production partner evenko for helping us mount this amazing concert as well as all our funders, partners and sponsors that are helping make this possible. SiriusXM Canada, Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, Agence Métropolitaine de Transport (AMT), ALDO, McAuslan, La Ville de Montréal, le ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l'Occupation du territoire (MAMROT), SODEC, Tourism Quebec and Tourism Montreal, who all have been integral in putting this event together. We thank them for supporting and continuing to support Canadian Independent Music.

SiriusXM Canada will broadcast the live concert exclusively for Sirius and XM subscribers throughout Canada and the U.S. on Sirius channels 152 and 161 and XM channel 151. This live broadcast is the latest opportunity for SiriusXM subscribers to experience unique and exclusive live musical performances from some of Canada's most influential artists.

The show will take place during the In Town, Without my Car ! event in Montreal organised by the Agence métropolitaine de transport and CAM, an amazing initiative we are pleased to support with a concert that will animate the downtown core. We are pleased to work with the great local company ALDO who, like the band and the festival, is a company that has sprung from Montreal to planet-wide fame. In keeping with the themes of environmental responsibility, ALDO is proud to by an official partner and will provide free eco-responsible water stations for concert attendees.

The show will coincide with the French release of Tracy Kidder's book Mountains Beyond Mountains (Soulever les montagnes), which documents the story of Paul Farmer, one of the founders of Partners In Health. For this show, the band is offering a special deal: as of today the first 100 people to make a 200$ + donation to KANPE will receive 2 passes to the VIP area at the show and a copy of the book. To participate visit kanpe.org. KANPE is a Montreal-based partner organization of Partners In Health dear to the band's heart. KANPE's work seeks to reverse the cycle of poverty in Haiti by encouraging financial independence, and enabling every person to live healthy and with dignity. VIP access for the show can also be acquired by purchasing a Super Pass on POP Montreal's website, where an option to donate to KANPE will be available to all.

Band Of Skulls Announce Select U.S. Dates

Southhampton, UK trio Band of Skulls are taking some time out from recording their second album to play select tour dates in the U.S. Currently recording at Rockfield Studios in Wales, the band will bring the driving guitar force and Wall of Sound harmonies of their live shows back to the states to play four shows in California before heading to Manchester, TN for their Thursday night slot at the Bonnaroo festival. They will be performing new songs at these shows along with favorites from their debut album 'Baby, Darling, Dollface, Honey.'

After spending two years touring in support of their debut album which was universally embraced by the U.S. press including SPIN (Best of Coachella), Rolling Stone (Best of SXSW) and Entertainment Weekly (Your Next Favorite Band) and culminated with a sold-out show at the Forum in London in late 2010, the band retreated to a studio in Norfolk UK to begin writing the follow-up. They returned to their home studio in Southampton to start the recording which they are now completing in Wales. The album will be mixed by Nick Launay (Grinderman, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire) and is scheduled for release in 2012. The album will be preceded by a single and EP released in late 2011.

Lapis Luna Vintage Jazz & Classic Swing Music

Lapis Luna brings you the captivating jazz of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s with a classic glittering sound. Standards, enchanting ballads, obscure swing-era gems, and vintage melodies the way they were meant to be heard: vibrant, fun, romantic, and cool.

The Lapis Luna Quartet is in an open run on Thursday evenings from 9pm to Midnight in the Plaza Hotel's Rose Club on Fifth Avenue at Central Park South. There is no cover, but there are marvelous drinks and champagne — of course!

The band is Shawn Aileen Clark on vocals, John Merrill on guitar, Chris Pistorino on bass, and Brian Floody on drums and percussion.

New York Magazine has identified Lapis Luna as an 'Ultimate New York City Wedding' band choice for four years running, and accordingly they were the wedding band for Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Geoffrey Arrend's (500 Days of Summer) nuptial celebration. Lapis Luna has also recently been featured as the swing band in the ad campaign for Kate Spade's new fragrance 'Twirl.'

In addition to their open engagement at the historic Plaza Hotel, Lapis Luna has other exciting performances in the city this spring, including:

Friday, May 20, 2011, 7:30pm to 9:30pm with the Lapis Luna Six. Smalls, 183 W. 10 Street at Seventh Avenue. A concert at one of the best jazz clubs in New York City. $20 at the door. Begin your evening in the sweetest, swinging way.

For more information on Lapis Luna, including full schedule, song list, and videos, please go to www.lapisluna.com or their Facebook page.

Agnes Obel To Make North American Debut at SXSW

Danish songwriter/composer Agnes Obel will be making her North American debut next week in Austin at SXSW. Agnes will play three special shows plus her US radio performance debut on KCRW. The live session with KCRW will air on Saturday, March 19 at 4:00pm EST / 3:00pm CST. After gracing stages in Austin, Agnes will make her way to New York City for a special one-night only performance at Rockwood Music Hall on Tuesday, March 22.

Agnes has made waves overseas since releasing her debut album Philharmonics on Play It Again Sam. PIAS America is proud to release the album in North America on April 12. The album was hailed by critics who have compared Agnes to artists such as PJ Harvey, Joanna Newson and even Roy Orbison. Philharmonics topped the charts in her native Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium and in France, where it was certified Gold on January 21, which just so happens to be St. Agnes Day.

Listening to Philharmonics, it’s easy to see what’s made Agnes such a success. Stripped down and centered around her evocative voice, Philharmonics is a striking work. Opening with the haunting instrumental of “Falling, Catching,” the song melds into the plaintive ballad “Riverside, which was recently featured on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” Perez Hilton featured “Riverside” on his site, calling it “exquisite” and saying it “hits our sweet spot.” The lilting harp-based tracks like “Just So” and “Beast” rub shoulders with the poignant melodies of “Avenue.” Brother Sparrowbegins as a mournful elegy that morphs halfway through the song into an upbeat bit of chamber folk. Agnes covers John Cale on “Close Watch,” which Chris Douridas from KCRW said, “triumphs over the original but makes you ever so grateful all over again for Cale’s lyrical brilliance.” (Download “Close Watch” here on Facebook.) From start to finish, the album is as beautiful as it is sparse.

Jazz for Curious Listeners

FILM SHOW: Sing Me A Swing Song: Great Jazz Vocalists – Ethel Waters

Host: Father Peter J. O’Brien

7:00 – 8:30pm
Location: Maysles Cinema - 343 Lenox Avenue between 127th & 128th Street
DONATION SUGGESTED| For more information: 212-348-8300

Vocalist and actress Ethel Waters (1896-1977) was a key figure in the development of African American culture between the two world wars. She broke barrier after barrier, becoming the first black woman heard on the radio, the first black singer to perform on television, the first African American to perform in an integrated cast on Broadway, and the first black woman to perform in a lead dramatic role on Broadway. As a singer Waters introduced over 50 songs that became hits, including standards of the magnitude of "St. Louis Blues" and "Stormy Weather." Her jazzy yet controlled vocal style influenced a generation of vocalists, black and white, and her career, encompassing stage, song, and screen, flowered several times in comebacks after tumbling to lowpoints.

See Ethel Waters perform on film andearn about the rise and fall and rise again of a great American artist of song, and hear recordings that document the sound and style that made Ethel Waters such an influence.

The band is scheduled to play both days of this year’s Life is good Festival in the Boston area alongside three stages of headliners, including Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, OK Go, Ben Harper & Relentless7 and many more.  All proceeds go to benefit The Life is good Kids Foundation whose mission is to provide support to kids who face life-threatening conditions such as the trauma of violence, poverty and loss.

The Giants’ kids album, Here Comes Science, released in September 2009, has received praise across the board for its unique and exciting fusion of rock, education and humor. Boing Boing described the album as “top-notch pop music with humor that's aimed at both kids and adults” and called the album“better than great. Perfect.”

Statewide Emergency @ The Fox Theatre

Statewide Emergency is a rock and roll quartet that plays honest original music with complex melodies and quality musicianship. Although much of the vocals and guitar are rooted in blues and alternative music (The Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age), the rhythm section is inspired by more straight ahead rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Dead Weather leaving more intrigue than doubt about what genre the band plays. One music writer described it as “balls-to-the-wall rock laced with blues and an alternative touch.”
