David Grisman Bluegrass Experience @ Boulder Theater

David Grisman is normally associated with the bluegrass wing of country music, but his music owes almost as much to jazz as it does to traditional American folk influences. Because he couldn't think of what to call his unique, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz without leaning toward one idiom or another, he offhandedly decided to call it "dawg music" -- a name which, curiously enough, has stuck. A brilliant mandolinist, with roots deep in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, Grisman's jazz sensibilities were strong enough to attract the admiration of the HCQ's Stephane Grappelli, who has toured and recorded with Grisman on occasion.

Bobby Long News & Tour Dates

Bobby Long, the young British singer-songwriter who has built an expansive worldwide fan base through constant touring over the last year, will be featured on National Public Radio's popular World Café program going out to its affiliate stations on Tuesday, April 27.  Carried nationally on over 200 radio stations through out the U.S., the show will be culled from Long's recent appearance on WXPN's weekly Free at Noon broadcast along with an interview with World Café host David Dye.

Long, who is unsigned and whose demanding tour schedule will continue into the summer, appeared live on Free at Noon on March 12 from Philadelphia's World Café Live venue, where he also played to an SRO audience in their upstairs room the following evening.  The prolific singer-songwriter-guitarist's set list included a selection of his better-known songs-"The Bounty of Mary Jane," "In the Frost," "Penance Fire Blues," "Dead and Done," "Two Years Old" and "Who Have You Been Loving," the song that first brought him to the attention of WXPN's music staff.  He also performed two of his newer compositions, "A Happy Winter" and "A Stranger Song."

A new Bobby Long single entitled "My Darling Bell" will be available for download from all digital outlets, including iTunes and amazon, beginning today (April 13, 2010). "My Darling Bell" appears on the new live collection of highlights from his DANGEROUS SUMMER 2009 tour, which is available exclusively at his live appearances.  Long has previously released two songs digitally from DIRTY POND SONGS, the first CD he recorded to make available at his live shows.  The first-"Left to Lie"-reached #1 on iTunes' Unsigned and #8 on its Folk charts. "The Bounty of Mary Jane" was released at the start of last summer's tour, followed by a live version of "Being A Mockingbird" recorded at Arlene's Grocery in New York during one of Long's very first U.S. appearances.  "My Darling Bell" is his first new digital release in almost a year.

Though still unsigned, Long is nearing completion of his much-anticipated studio debut recording, produced by Grammy®-winning producer Liam Watson (The White Stripes).  The CD was recorded at Watson's analog Toe Rag Studios in London with studio musicians backing him up on most of the tracks, but several songs will receive the spare, acoustic guitar accompaniment his fan base has come to know and love.  A review in Jambase of his recent SRO show at New York's Mercury Lounge comments on his finger-style guitar playing:  "The majority of [Long's] catalog builds off relatively simplistic chord progressions, but he shows a remarkable knack for adding color via accent notes with his unorthodox two-fingered picking attack and construction of fuller, brighter chords than the standard singer-songwriter fare. Notably, he walks the line between country blues and the more uplifting traditional I-IV-V type structures, while taking the crowd energy through high peaks of heavy strumming howls and low valleys of quiet, whispered picking."

Here We Go Magic On Tour Now | LP Pigeons Out June 8th

Here We Go Magic is a five-piece band made up of members Luke Temple, Kristina Lieberson, Michael Bloch, Jennifer Turner, and Peter Hale. They originally came together in New York in early 2009 through a series of chance encounters, overheard conversations and supernatural occurrences.

From disparate musical backgrounds, the five found immediate common inspiration in a collection of unique 4-track recordings created by lead singer Luke Temple. These recordings were released in February, 2009 as the self-titled Here We Go Magic (Western Vinyl).

Since this initial spark the band's creative momentum has been unwavering. Together they have developed a broad array of musical material and honed an explosive live sound all their own. They spent much of 2009 on successive North American and European tours with bands such Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear, and the Walkmen, before retreating to a house near East Branch, NY to record their second full length LP.

Pigeons, set for release on Secretly Canadian on June 8th, is an entirely self-produced album, recorded by Here We Go Magic over four months living together in late Summer and Fall of 2009.

Six Bing Crosby Reissues/New Albums Set For May 18 Debut

BRITISH SINGER-SONGWRITER BOBBY LONG RETURNS TO U.S. FOR 2010 TOUR

British singer-songwriter Bobby Long returns to American shores this week, kicking off a tour that will include his first appearances at the annual South By Southwest Conference (SxSW) in Austin, Texas. Long, whose 2009 "Dangerous Summer" tour of the U.S. and Canada comprised more than 100 shows and was extended through December, will begin his 2010 U.S. run at World Café Live in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 13. Following the string of his own shows, Long will join popular Philadelphia indie band matt pond PA (mppa) for 16 shows during May in support their new album The Dark Leaves.

Bobby Long will also be the special guest on WXPN Radio's weekly Free@Noon broadcast, live from Philadelphia this Friday, March 12. Last fall, WXPN began playing cuts from Long's DIRTY POND SONGS CD-a collection he recorded in his London bedroom to be available exclusively at his shows-and made him their "World Café Next" artist of the week in December. The broadcast will be streamed live at www.xpn.org and www.npr.org.

Long is also set for several performances at SxSW next week: Thursday, March 18 at 11PM at the Hilton Garden Inn Creekside as part of "The Bedford at SxSW" event, Friday, March 19 at 2PM at Bug Music's event at the Continental Club and again at 7PM at the SxSW Second Play Stage at the Hilton Hotel Austin. His final SxSW appearance will take place on Sunday, March 21 at 1PM at the UHCU Headliner Stage. Other highlights of the spring tour will be appearances at the eclectic Bamboozle Festival on both coasts, the March 28 event at Anaheim Stadium in California and the May 1 event at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Long started the year with three weeks of shows in Europe, playing several countries for the first time.  He is currently recording his much-anticipated debut studio album for release later in the year with producer Liam Watson (The White Stripes' "Elephant") at the helm. "I'm feeling really good about it all," he says.  "I'm really pleased with the time in the studio and to have had an opportunity to work with amazing musicians and with a producer like Liam Watson.  Everyone worked together, and I really feel like we have put together a great sound and something that will make people stand up and listen. I've recorded around 18 songs and now just have to pick the ones for the album."

He has already sold more than 10,000 copies of the 10-song collection of original material called DIRTY POND SONGS.  "Left to Lie" and "The Bounty of Mary Jane" from that CD are available for download from iTunes and other digital outlets.  "Let Me Sign," a song he co-wrote with Marcus Foster, is part of the American Music Award-winning soundtrack of the blockbuster film "Twilight."  He has also compiled a new DANGEROUS SUMMER TOUR CD of live performances from his marathon 2009 tour, which will be available for sale at the upcoming shows.  Included in that collection are some of his newer compositions, "The Borough Mill," "In the Frost," "My Darling Bell" and "Girl From the Keys," among them.

Fans first discovered his compelling brand of acoustic music via the film, YouTube and his continually-updated MySpace page (www.myspace.com/musicbobbylong), which is now closing in on two million page views.  Music critics and selected radio programmers have jumped on the Long bandwagon early, praising both his songwriting and his style.

Jakob Dylan & Three Legs ft: Neko Case & Kelly Hogan

Live radio show with Nick and Helen Forster featuring music and conversation with the Jakob Dylan & Three Legs (ft: Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Paul Rigby, Jon Rauhouse, Tom Ray & Barry Mirochnick). Being the son of one of the most influential, innovative, eccentric, and unique songwriters in the history of Western pop music probably opened some doors for Jakob Dylan when he started his own musical career, but being Bob Dylan's son was just as likely a heavy load to carry as well, and the good news is that the younger Dylan has handled the pressure with relative élan.
He studied at private schools in L.A. and New York, and eased into the music business in the late '80s when he formed the Wallflowers with guitarist Tobi Miller, keyboard player Rami Jaffee, bassist Barrie Maguire, and drummer Peter Yanowitz. Featuring a classic heartland sound that was closer to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers or John Mellencamp than it was to anything Bob Dylan recorded, the band signed to Virgin and released a self-titled debut album in 1992, but it sold poorly and Virgin dropped the band.
Dylan assembled a second version of the Wallflowers -- guitarist Michael Ward, bassist Greg Richling, and drummer Mario Calire -- keeping only Jaffee. The "new" group signed to Interscope Records and recorded its second album with producer (and Dylan family friend) T Bone Burnett. Bringing Down the Horse was released in 1996, producing the alternative radio hit "6th Avenue Heartache." A second single from the album, "One Headlight," followed later in the year, and by the spring of 1997 it had become a Top Ten hit, firmly establishing the Wallflowers as a legitimate commercial band, and while the media naturally played up Dylan's connection to his iconic father, the Wallflowers had their own sound and Jakob's similarities to his dad as both a singer and a songwriter were only occasional at best. A third single from Bringing Down the Horse, "The Difference," was issued in 1997, and the album hung on as a big seller throughout 1997, and in 1998 "One Headlight" won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The obvious next move would have been to rush out a third album, but Dylan and the Wallflowers instead took a long four-year break from recording, returning in October 2000 to release Breach. The album, although quite impressive, went largely ignored. The more mainstream Red Letter Days appeared a year later in 2001, and following a two-year hiatus, Rebel, Sweetheart was issued in 2003, closing out the band's deal with Interscope. Dylan signed a solo contract with Columbia Records, his dad's longtime label, in 2006, and issued the acoustic-based Seeing Things, produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at Rubin's Hollywood Hills studio, under his own name in 2008, leaving the status of the Wallflowers up in the air. Jakob's new record, "Women & Country" will drop April 6, 2010.
In 2006, SPIN Magazine called Neko Case "one of pop music's best" voices, and Interview Magazine hailed her album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood as "one of the most original, beguiling, honest records of the year." The album also earned Case Female Artist of the Year honors from the PLUG Independent Music Awards, and a Top 10 placement in the Village Voice's annual Pazz and Jop Critics Poll of the year's best releases. Fox Confessor was Case's first album to debut in the Billboard Top 100, and has sold nearly 200,000 copies in the U.S. alone.

Kelly's Hogan's voice is so versatile it can wrap itself around any song, in any style, be it torchy jazz, country weepers, soul-fueled bump and grinders or long-lost pop nuggets, and transform them into something all her own. Hogan began to hone her mellifluously spooky welter of torch songs and honky tonk anthems when she fronted the legendary peg-legged cabaret quartet, The Jody Grind, and then fanned the flames of her bummer-rock fixation while playing guitar for Orbisonic southern gothic punks, The Rock*A*Teens. She has also kept her bad self busy with appearances on some clever and popular Bloodshot compilations, and she did a split single with Neko Case. The past few years has seen Kelly singing with fellow Georgians the Drive By Truckers, the kiddie-punk ensemble Wee Hairy Beasties, the hopped up jazz combo The Wooden Leg and recording and touring with Neko Case as her back up singer.

Anne McCue's new CD, 'Broken Promise Land,' returns to raw sound

Anne McCue describes her new album, Broken Promise Land, due out on May 18, 2010 on Flying Machine Records Records, as “a bit dirty, a bit rockin’, a bit swampy and a bit bluesy, with a touch of mysteriousness to it.”

What isn’t mysterious is McCue’s musical talent and range. She was voted the Roots Music Association’s Folk Artist of the Year in 2008, performed in a Jimi Hendrix tribute at the 2007 International Guitar Festival and was included in the Four Decades of Folk Rock box set alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and Wilco. Heart’s Nancy Wilson has described her as “my Aussie clone,” while Americana icon Lucinda Williams had this to say: “Initially, her stunning voice hooked me in. Then I got inside the songs. The first chance I got, I went to see her perform . . . I was floored! The combination of her tomboyish beauty mixed with the precision and assertiveness with which she approached the guitar, her surrounding languid and earthy vocals created an intoxicating blend.”

The new, self-produced album is one that she has long wanted to make. Combining heartfelt songwriting with gritty guitar playing, the record harkens back to McCue’s breakout Roll release, although she says that the new disc’s sound is even more raw than its predecessor. While earlier albums covered a range of roots-rock styles, Broken Promise Land focuses on McCue’s hard-charging “cosmic biker rock” sound.

The new disc lets McCue showcase her rockin’ ways and six-string virtuosity. The title track cuts loose with a blistering Hendrix-like bluesy guitar solo. The first single, “Don’t Go To Texas (Without Me),” boasts the dirty guitar sound of late ’60s English bands like the Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones, while “The Old Man Talkin’” exudes a slinky J.J. Cale vibe.

The music’s strong, visceral energy results from a strategy to record as much as possible live. “I didn’t want to have a lot of layers. I wanted it to be pretty much what I can do on stage,” McCue asserts. She sought to capture the vibe of the old Albert King albums that she loves, which were recorded in only a few days, and she included a brass section in the sessions. By recording to tape, McCue also created the textures and dimension that she admires in T-Bone Burnett’s work.

On Broken Promise Land, McCue utilized the veteran rhythm section of Bones Hillman (Midnight Oil) and drummer Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo/Wilco). “Bones and Ken are very developed as musicians,” she says. “It’s great to have that type of depth to the musicianship.” This powerful trio demonstrates their musical breadth throughout this disc, whether it’s building “The Lonely One” into a surging rock ballad, conjuring a spooky atmosphere in Amelia White’s “Motorcycle Dream” or roaring through a cover of Rose Tattoo’s “Rock ’n’ Roll Outlaw.”

McCue’s love for music was nurtured in Sydney, Australia, where she grew up in a house filled with music. Her father, while not a professional musician, played a variety of instruments and her mother sang in the church choir. All of her seven older siblings were heavily into music too, and sounds ranging from Billie Holiday to Led Zeppelin filled the McCue home. “Every type of music except hardcore blues,” the blues-loving McCue admits, “so I definitely didn’t get burned out on it as a child.”

Although McCue played guitar growing up, she wasn’t encouraged to be a musician. A longtime film buff, she got a degree in film studies at Sydney’s University of Technology. Her cinema studies are an influence. “To me, my songs are like short films,” she reveals, “I try to be very visual and cinematic with my music and now I am making videos for the songs too.”

After college, McCue joined an all-female band, Girl Monstar, which was very popular in the Australian indie rock scene. She later became a part of the folk-rock trio Eden AKA that performed on the Lilith Fair tour and recorded a never-released album for Columbia Records. Her ill-fated Columbia experience landed her in America, where she set up shop in Los Angeles and became a vital part of the city’s roots music scene. During her time in Southern California, she recorded two attention-grabbing albums — 2004’s Roll and 2006’s Koala Motel.
Both releases accumulated a bevy of critical accolades. Entertainment Weekly exclaimed that McCue “represents a new generation of hard-bitten, country-inflected singer-songsmiths,” while Billboard heralded her as  “the virtual definition of ‘triple threat.’ A potent singer, thoughtful songwriter and tough guitarist.” Austin Chronicle critic Jim Caligiuri noted that “these days, there are very few women working the same territory as McCue, who can combine tough and vulnerable. That she does it with poise and a self-deprecating sense of humor makes her an artist worth seeing again.”
A few years ago, McCue moved to Nashville, a place she finds quite fertile for making music. “There’s more room to think, more creative space,” she explains, “but there are so many great musicians that it really raises the bar and makes you want to get better.” Last year, she self-produced a limited-distribution acoustic album, East of Electric, on which she played a variety of instruments. A terrific example of her folkier side, it stands as a quiet side-trip to the full-bodied rock ferocity that Broken Promise Land delivers.
“This is the kind of music I love playing,” says McCue talking enthusiastically about her Broken Promise Land songs. “There’s nothing I could look more forward to than playing a whole set of bluesy, rocky, swampy music.”

White Rabbits Announce US Tour With Here We Go Magic

After spending the better part of two years on the road (including festival stops at Lollapallooza, Glastonbury (UK), Sasquatch, Monolith and tours with The Walkmen, Spoon, Richard Swift, The Cribs, White Denim and Tokyo Police Club). White Rabbits hunkered down in their Brooklyn practice space to set about re-envisioning the dark pop of their debut Fort Nightly, while adding new sounds and influences to achieve an original work.  The result is It’s Frightening, their second full-length album.

White Rabbits signed to TBD Records (US home to Radiohead/Other Lives/Hatcham Social) and erected a makeshift studio in their basement rehearsal space to demo new material.  Band members popped in and out over the course of several months lending ideas and personality to a new batch of songs that defy instant categorization. After enlisting tourmate, friend and songwriter Britt Daniel (Spoon) as producer, the pair began the process of exchanging demos between Brooklyn and Portland.  White Rabbits recorded It’s Frightening over the course of four weeks, only taking a break to play the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes, France.  The sessions were recorded by visionary engineer Nicholas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter) at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, NY.  Taking special care to recreate the unhinged nature of the original demos, the band utilized the wide range of tools in the analog-friendly studio to shape the personal spirit infused in the new tracks.  Upon the completion of tracking, White Rabbits traveled to Austin, TX to mix the record with studio wizard Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail Of Dead) using his exceptional ears to transform It’s Frightening into a uniquely rewarding headphone experience.

It’s Frightening plays like a classic reel of tape from start to finish. Opening with the visceral drums of “Percussion Gun,” it is clear that time-off from the road has served the band well.  The many highlights include the emotional centerpiece “Company I Keep,” the new sonic territory of “Lionesse” and the macabre lyrics of “Right Where They Left.”  Fans of Fort Nightly will find much to go weak in the knees over and new listeners are in for an awakening as White Rabbits flip the switch on an already impressive beginning. It’s Frightening is a journey into the playfully dark musings of Everyman.

Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra | Rex Jazz & Blues Bar

Award winning Jazz Composer Chuck Iwanusa's latest composition, entitled "What Do You Want?", will be premiered by the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra. The fourteen minute piece features tenor saxophonists Quinson Nachoff and Kelly Jefferson. Chuck's compositions have been professionally performed by bands in Western Australia, Kazakhstan, and Switzerland, as well as by numerous college and university ensembles.

Heralded as Canada's "Jazz Big Band of the Year" by The Jazz Report, the Toronto based Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra has toured throughout the world with performances from Moscow to New York City .  The DMJO has recorded six albums for Sackville Records, The Jazz Alliance and The Canadian Music Center, one of which was nominated for a Juno Award.

Marco Benevento | 'BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL'

Back with his third full length studio album in as many years, Brooklyn-based pianist and sound sculptor MARCO BENEVENTO delivers BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL on May 11 via his label Royal Potato Family.

BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL was initially conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin Marco Benevento (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked and his trio, including bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr, over three days. The material was drawn from fragments of melodies and song ideas that Benevento had been collecting over the last year. To achieve the colors he envisioned for these compositions, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs. Additional drum parts were added by Matt Chamberlain. As a last step, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang), Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala) for final mixes. The results range from the day-glo electro-pop of "It Came From You" to the simply-stated lullaby "Katie's Song" to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem "Two Of You."

2009 was a breakout year for Marco Benevento. In February, he released Me Not Me, an album featuring interpretations of songs by My Morning Jacket, Leonard Cohen and Deerhoof among others. Touring it across the U.S., Benevento and his trio made a number of high profile performances, including San Francisco Jazz Festival, Earshot Festival and Carnegie Hall. At the end of '09, Benevento released his first ever DVD, Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency, a two hour-plus documentary with performances and interviews from his historical five week 2008 engagement at the downtown New York City venue Sullivan Hall, featuring special guests like Brad Barr, Kaki King, Billy Martin, Stanton Moore and Steven Bernstein. As if all this wasn't enough, he toured and recorded with post jazz cognoscenti Garage A Trois, became a full time member of indie pop experimentalists Surprise Me Mr. Davis and welcomed his second daughter into the world.

With the release of BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL, Marco Benevento continues to define himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era, blurring genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation. He speaks in modern sonic tongues, all cut-and-pasted, tweaked-out and glitchy, but full of wide-eyed wonder that rejoices in the limitless horizons of sound and melody.
