Infantree Instigate Cockfight in “Mourning Glory”

Three-fourths of California quartet Infantree may still be under 21, but with their startlingly sophisticated songwriting chops and lush vocal harmonies the young musicians are already composing timeless music.  Signed to Vapor Records (Jonathan Richman, Everest, Tegan & Sara), the prolific band has released both an EP and a full-length this year.  The latter of which, titled Would Work, will be re-released in early March with extra tracks and a bonus disc of video content.  Neil Young also invited the guys to perform at this year’s Bridge School Benefit alongside artists like Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Modest Mouse, and Grizzly Bear.

With three songwriting members that take turns on lead vocals, Infantree have no true frontman.  As a result, their highly collaborative approach creates a unique chemistry and the details of each of their songs are masterfully tailored.  It also allows for a diverse set of influences to find their way into the band’s music.  The band weaves in sun-soaked Americana, intricate baroque pop, dreamy psychedelia, and infectious Spanish melodies, to name a few.

The group has made a video for Would Work track “Mourning Glory.”  The song slyly and seamlessly shifts between a forlorn, banjo-driven section and a wistful Latin-flavored groove.  If you haven’t seen the video yet, click HERE to watch the boys don chicken suits and duke it out in a human cockfight.

Infantree’s attention to detail covers all aspects of the band, from consistently churning out charming videos for their songs to the band name itself.  The guys explain the metaphor behind the name “Infantree” in their own words here:

"Trees are carbon dioxide reducing, erosion preventing, oxygen producing, majestic, and sturdy life-forms that grow with their environment - not in spite of it (like industrial-age humans). Infantree is a symbol for growth. Whether it be intellectual, spiritual, physical, or emotional; growth is growth. If left unchecked, exponential growth could devour prosperity as we know it. Only when it's applied within a means does growth reach it's true potential of ceaseless sustanability. Infantree applies this method by way of harmony, like-mindedness, and an articulation of each indvidual's role/capacity as a musician/human-being. The Savory Collection may well redefine the critical view of jazz in the late 1930s. Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies, provides proof of this claim in the New York Times by "citing the case of Herschel Evans, a saxophonist who played in the Count Basie Orchestra but who died early in 1939, just before his 30th birthday. Evans played alongside Lester Young, who was one of the giants of the saxophone and constantly overshadowed Evans on the Basie group’s studio recordings.

“There can never be too much Lester Young, and there is some wonderful new Lester Young on these discs,” Mr. Morgenstern said. “But there are also some things where you can really hear Herschel, who is woefully under-represented on record and who, until now, we hardly ever got to hear stretched out. What I’ve heard really gives us a much better picture of what he was all about.”

2010 ACFNY FALL JAZZ FESTIVAL

During the week of October 19 – 23 a new generation of Austrian jazz musicians will hit the New York scene. For this year’s installment of the annual series, the Austrian Cultural Forum has found a new partner in Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club. The Festival will showcase Austria’s foremost young artists on five consecutive nights, and tap into a unique blend of Austrian and American creativity. This year’s Festival kicks off on Tuesday, October 19th at the Austrian Cultural Forum: one of Austria’s leading jazz musicians, Wolfgang Puschnig will perform with his American musical partner and free funk bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Martin Reiter will also present his new solo program. Join us for some late night jazz sessions at exclusive Jazz Club Dizzy’s where Christian Maurer’s band Mausi will appear together with Jack Walrath and versatile alto voice Ali Gaggl on Wednesday, October 20th. On Thursday October 21st, the program at Dizzy’s continues with young jazz singer Simone Kopmajer, who will perform with talented young musicians from New York. The Austrian-born drummer Gernot Bernroider and his band Oulipians will appear together with the extraordinary vocalist Chanda Rule on Friday the 22nd. The series will conclude with Franz Hackl and his Acoustic Band on Saturday, October 23rd, featuring Kenny Davis and special guest Randy Brecker.

Members of Austria’s hip young jazz scene move freely and fluidly among the multifaceted styles in the world of jazz, always intent on finding and refining their own modes of expression. There is no other city in Europe where opportunities for musicians to mingle with each other are as diverse and spontaneous as in Vienna. The spirit of openness is part of Austria's musical heritage, as is a joy of connecting with musicians from other countries.

The Mynabirds Stop By Daytrotter, Kick Off Tour Today

Laura Burhenn has had a busy year.  She released What We Lose In The Fire We Gain in the Flood (Saddle Creek), her acclaimed debut album as The Mynabirds, and opened for everyone from Al Green to Built to Spill.  Burhenn and her band also recently stopped by Daytrotter to record a session, which was just posted today.  Click HERE to listen to them perform 3 songs off the album plus the new song “Lemon Tree,” which was recorded for the first time.  The band is also about to hit the road on a national tour, including dates with Crooked Fingers and David Bazan.

After the break-up of her former band, Georgie James, Burhenn wrote a collection of songs that meditated on the themes of loss and recovery.  She recorded the compositions with Richard Swift and the results are the ten tracks on What We Lose.  A potent mix of soul, gospel, and country, Burhenn created The Mynabirds’ aesthetic based on how she thought Neil Young would sound doing Motown.  Serendipitously, she later found out that Young once collaborated with Rick James for a Motown project under the name The Mynah Birds!  Click HERE for more info on The Mynabirds, plus photos and mp3’s to listen to.

Steve Cropper & Felix Cavaliere reunite for new album, 'Midnight Flyer'

Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T. and the MGs and one of the primary architects of the unmistakable Stax sound of the 1960s, and vocalist/keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, the voice of the Rascals and the pivotal figure in the blue-eyed soul movement of that same era, have reconvened for their second collaborative recording. Sparks fly at the crossroads of Memphis soul and East Coast R&B when Stax Records releases Midnight Flyer on June 15, 2010.

Midnight Flyer, recorded in Nashville and mixed by the legendary David Z, is the followup to Nudge It Up a Notch, the 2008 maiden voyage by Cropper and Cavaliere that scored critical acclaim from the music and mainstream press. The San Francisco Chronicle called Nudge It Up a Notch “an unexpected delight,” while Blues Wax heralded the project as “one of the great surprises of 2008, and further evidence of Concord’s genuine commitment to the revamped Stax imprint.”

The Stax legacy — and Concord’s commitment to it — are very much alive in Midnight Flyer, an album that once again showcases the songwriting prowess of two towering figures from one of the most seminal periods in the history of American pop music. Assisting with the songwriting throughout most of the album’s 12 tracks is drummer/percussionist/vocalist Tom Hambridge, who also lent a hand with the crafting of the previous album.

“Felix and I come from pretty much the same musical school — but from different geographical locations,” says Cropper. “He’s a Jersey boy at heart, and I grew up in Memphis, but when soul meets soul, what can you say? There are no borders. There are no boundaries.”

But geography does play a role in the making of great songs, says Cavaliere. “Steve has that Southern vernacular, which is something I really like,” he says. “It’s almost like another language to those of us from the East Coast. It has a certain folky quality to it. Some of those idioms are part of the hit songs that Steve has written and recorded over the years, and they’re part of this record as well.”

The impact of both of these musicians and songwriters on pop music is nearly impossible to quantify. As part of Booker T. & the MGs — the house band for the Stax label in its original incarnation during the 1960s — Cropper co-wrote and produced classics by artists like Eddie Floyd (“Knock On Wood”), Wilson Pickett (“In the Midnight Hour”) and Otis Redding (“Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”). In subsequent decades, he lent his instrumental and production skills to a range of artists including Jeff Beck, the Blues Brothers, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and many others.

Cavaliere came to prominence in the mid-’60s as vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter for the Rascals (initially known as the Young Rascals). Cavaliere wrote and/or sang several of the band’s biggest hits, including “Good Lovin’” (1966), “Groovin’” (1967), “It’s a Beautiful Morning” (1968) and “People Got To Be Free” (1968). The phrase “blue-eyed soul” was coined during the Rascals’ heyday, due in large part to the group’s highly successful forays into R&B and soul — styles that had been developed and previously dominated by African-American artists.

Co-produced by Cropper, Cavaliere and Hambridge, Midnight Flyer captures the synergy and brilliance that can only emerge when two powerful forces of nature come together. The result is a range of styles and shades, from heartfelt ballads like “When You’re With Me” to the soul-charged “I Can’t Stand It,” a churning vocal duet featuring Cavaliere and his daughter Aria. “Sexy Lady” harkens back to the soul stylings of the ’70s, while the funky instrumental “Do It Like This” digs into a tight groove and makes plenty of room for Cropper’s tasty riff work to close out the set.

“The main thing we both take away from this record is how much fun we had making it,” says Cavaliere. “We may have used a lot of new technology that didn’t even exist when Steve and I were recording back in the day, but the songs themselves are still the most important part of the process, and we just had a blast writing and recording them. I think that spirit comes through on the record.”

Cropper notes a timelessness about Cavaliere that serves as a metaphor for the music itself. “Felix is ageless,” he says. “Sure, you can look at him and see that he’s gotten older since those early days, just like we all have. But if you close your eyes, he sounds as young and energetic as he did when he was making records back in the ’60s . . . Working together on records like this reminds us of the kinds of things that go into the making of a good song. We’re still doing that, and we’re still having fun doing it.”

Cymbals Eat Guitars and Freelance Whales in DENVER

To call them multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone.  The kids in Freelance whales are really just collectors, at heart. They don't really fancy buffalo nickels or Victorian furniture, but over the past two years, they've been collecting instruments, ghost stories, and dream-logs.  Somehow, from this strange compost heap of little sounds and quiet thoughts, songs started to rise up like steam from the ground.

The first performance of these songs took place in January of 2009, in Staten Island's abandoned farm colony, a dilapidated geriatric ward, in one of New York's lesser visited boroughs. A seemingly never-ending jigsaw of small rooms, the farm colony ate them whole and threatened to never regurgitate them. And even though the onlookers were only spiritual presences, the group was still palpably nervous and visibly cold.  After a bit of singing, strumming and stomping asbestos, they realized that they'd found a good crowd.  They heard a bit of clapping from an adjacent room, also some laughing, but not a single soul asked about their record.

Weathervanes, the groups debut LP, finished tracking just a few nights earlier.  Swirling with organic and synthetic textures, interlocking rhythmic patterns, and light harmonic vocals, the record works to tell a simple, pre-adolescent love story: a young male falls in love with the spectral young femme who haunts his childhood home.   He chases her in his dreams but finds her to be mostly elusive.  He imagines her alive, and wonders if someday he'll take on her responsibilities of ghosting, or if maybe he'll join her, elsewhere.

Since their brief residency at the Farm Colony, Freelance Whales have taken to city streets, subway platforms, and stages with their swirling nostalgia.  Many people who found them playing in those public spaces, managed to forget what train they were supposed to take; some of them forgot what language they originally spoke.  And so, after playing in New York City, almost exclusively, for about a year, they embarked on their first tour of the United States, and Canada.  They saw buffaloes posted on hilltops, armies of windmills, and lots of lovely people who let the music run their blood in reverse.

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival Featuring 'The Young Lions of Gypsy Jazz 'at Birdland

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival carries on the legacy of the virtuoso gypsy guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT and his 'hot swing' style of playing that started a musical revolution in France and the world in the 30's and 40's when he teamed with master Jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli in the Hot Club Quintette!

The Festival, produced by Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta, goes into gear with a sizzling cast featuring young players.  Many of "The Young Lions of Gypsy Jazz" come from Europe starting with SAMSON SCHMITT from France, son of legendary gypsy guitarist DORADO SCHMITT – this year Samson comes on his own.
 
ANDREAS OBERG hails from Sweden and is a virtuoso 'rock star' of the gypsy guitar.  We are delighted to present him at the Festival for the first time on the heels of his new CD just out on Resonance Records.  LUDOVIC BEIER, a regular from Paris, is an accordion and accordina master along with being an accomplished Composer… a bright star on the horizon! 
 
Joining the band is TIMBO, French swing violinist and regular of Samson's band in Europe along with 18-year old BRONSON, rhythm player and younger brother of Samson coming to the US for the first time. KRUNO SPISIC, from Philadelphia, a swinging gypsy guitar player, with movie-star appeal, returns to Birdland to wow the audiences.  Add to all this the new American gypsy band, The HOT CLUB of DETROIT made up of 5 young musicians who have deep Jazz Gypsy roots and swing like mad! Their new CD is on Mack Avenue Records.

The veteran of the group is bassist BRIAN TORFF. He plays a mean bass and holds everything together as Musical Director.

Every year, we have a Jazz great from this side of the ocean as a Special Guest each night including JOEL FRAHM who plays the sax as hot hot as it can be.  EDMAR CASTANEDA, virtuoso on the Colombian Jazz Harp, brings an original excitement to the music.  HOWARD LEVY is a Harmonica Master (classical and Jazz) whose rip-roaring technique and personality are a great match for the gypsies. It will be a 'first' with WYCLIFFE GORDON, trombonist, playing the music of Django, with his special magic, as will DAVID LANGLOIS who plays the 'washboards,' an unusual percussion instrument that is great fun!

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival is known for 'hot swinging/romantic' music in the style of Django Reinhardt.  There will be smiles on and offstage, sheer joy, original collaborations, ...and most importantly, gypsy swing on the highest level.

Everest announces fall tour dates w/ Neil Young, Wilco & Death Cab for Cutie

Everest will warm stages for some greats this fall. The LA boys have been handpicked to be the steady opening guest for Neil Young's fall tour.

Everest will open for Neil dates with Death Cab for Cutie from October 14 through November 5 on the West Coast and East Coast with Wilco from November 29 through the tour's conclusion at Madison Square Garden on December 15th.

This weekend the band will perform at the Outside Lands Festival on August 23rd in San Francisco and will wind their way around the Northwest with a string of tour dates.

Adrienne Young will be featured on today's edition of NPR's "All Things Considered".  Check with your local station for broadcast times of Elizabeth Blair's interview with Adrienne.

Adrienne Young recently released Room to Grow on her own AddieBelle label (5.22) with distribution through Ryko.  Recorded in upstate New York at Levon Helm's studio, in Virginia at Sound of Music Studios and mixed by Jason Lehning in Nashville, Room to Grow reveals the maturation and sensitivity that have evolved in Young's songwriting and vocals.

Branching out from the themes that defined her last effort, 2005's The Art of Virtue - a study and exploration of Benjamin Franklin's 13 Virtues - Room to Grow is more introspective in its focus but wider in its aim.  As in the past, Young tackles heady subjects - longing, regret, fear, desire, contentment, purpose - but manages to artfully sidestep the melodrama, extending instead a rational but hopeful approach to the pilgrimage of life. Young's NPR piece will also focus on her commitment to sustainable food and farming, her involvement with the Food Routes Network and the Community Gardening Association.   Young will be donating a portion of proceeds from Room to Grow to the Community Gardening Association.   

Adrienne Young's New CD Streets On May 22nd

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Adrienne Young is such an ardent supporter of sustainable agriculture that she bundled seed packets into the liner notes of her Grammy-nominated first album. But it's her third release, the forthcoming Room to Grow - due out May 22, 2007 on her own AddieBelle Records and distributed by Ryko Distribution - that she feels will bear the most significant fruits of her labor. Young has integrated a national responsible-farming awareness campaign and fund-raising effort into the release of Room to Grow, a perfect marriage between her convictions and her talent.

The album features guest appearances by legendary bassist Mike Gordon (Phish, Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon), Gordon Stone (Phish, Gordon Stone Trio), long-time collaborator and Nashville heavyweight Will Kimbrough, guest vocals by bluegrass siren Dale Ann Bradley, and co-writes with Mark D. Sanders, one of Music Row's most successful tunesmiths (No. 1 songs for George Strait, Lee Ann Womack, Alan Jackson and others).

 
Branching out from the themes that defined her last effort, 2005's The Art of Virtue - a study and exploration of Benjamin Franklin's 13 Virtues - Room to Grow is more introspective in its focus but wider in its aim. As in the past, Young tackles heady subjects - longing, regret, fear, desire, contentment, purpose - but manages to artfully sidestep the melodrama, extending instead a rational but hopeful approach to the pilgrimage of life.

 
"It's such a rare place to be, where you're reduced to wagering everything on the pertinence of your perspective," Young shares. "Deciding to produce this record on my own forced me to confront many qualities within myself that have served both as hindrances and strengths. It was not necessarily my intent that those struggles be apparent in the songs themselves, but expression that touches people requires the revelation of truth. I feel this album has the potential to both inspire and challenge simultaneously and am so grateful we had the chance to make it."

 
ayYoung, together with the Food Routes Network (www.foodroutes.org), which she has represented nationally since 2004, have formed an alliance with the American Community Garden Association (www.acga.org). Working with these national non-profits based in Philadelphia and Boston, Young will donate a portion of every record sold to a newly established fund. Proceeds will support local farming efforts in a variety of ways, from supplying non-GMO organic seeds to community gardens, to assisting progressive agricultural entrepreneurs.

 
FoodRoutes executive director Tim Schiltzer is excited about the partnership and feels confident that Young continues to be the appropriate national figure for the organization's mission. Adrienne's music is one way to introduce our mission both to farmers and the public. We could not ask for a better spokesperson who not only helps spread the word but also leads by example in her contributions to community based food systems."

 
In the fall, Young will unveil an inaugural sustainable living tour featuring eco-vendors, educational workshops on self-sufficient living practices, national live music acts as well as local artists and artisans representing the traditions specific to their region. One of Young's goals is to acquaint people with the resources available in their own backyards. "Our intention is for this tour to affirm the power inherent in tightly bound communities, by reinvigorating an awareness of and affection for local neighborhoods, cultures and economies."
