Christopher Paul Stelling Reveals NYC Residency

Christopher Paul Stelling arrived in New York City in 2008 with nothing but his guitar and a duffel bag. Not necessarily concerned with making a name for himself, circumstance and necessity soon found him singing and playing guitar on the subway platforms. Although he still turns heads while playing in the subway every now and then, Stelling has since graced some of New York’s finest stages, and now we’re thrilled to announce his Rockwood Music Hall residency April, taking place each Tuesday night at 8pm.

CPS also took time to link up with Break Thru Radio to film a compelling video for “Flawless Executioner,” which was recorded in a horse stable near Prospect Park in Brookyln. The video went live today, so head over to BTR and check it out!

The years prior to Stelling’s arrival in Brooklyn had seen him through something of an odyssey. He’s studied under a master guitar builder in Colorado, slept in a closet in North Carolina, managed a used bookstore in Florida, and wandered aimlessly through Seattle, all without a said plan in mind- and completely unaware that something was being stitched together beneath it all.

His guitar playing style would seem more appropriate for a man twice his age, bringing to mind the likes of Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and Sandy Bull. His songwriting reaches deep, tugging emotional heartstrings, all while conjuring up imagery from religion, mythology and folklore.  Having already self-released a 20 song album on his own, and a live session with Daytrotter, his first official full-length is currently in the works.

Joe Deninzon's Exuberance

Progressive jazz violinist Joe Deninzon, is honored to announce the release of EXUBERANCE. Recorded with bassist Robert Bowen, and guitarist Stephen Benson, EXUBERANCE is the essence of three musicians in a room, playing live with no overdubs or production; a completely raw experience.

The group draws influences from jazz stylists including the gypsy explorations of Django Reinhardt and the hot swing of violinist Stephane Grappelli along with rock and pop standards of the past 40 years including songs by Steely Dan, Alice in Chains, Jimmy Webb and Radiohead.  A few choice covers by Radiohead (“The Tourist”), Alice in Chains (“Heaven Beside You”), Steely Dan (“Bodhissatva”) and Fat's Waller's “Jitterbug Waltz” show just how wide the group's range goes.

One of the group's original songs, “Sun Goes Down” (featuring Luba on lead vocals), has been featured in the independent film, “What's Up Scarlet?” and a recent winner in the Jazz category of the Billboard and John Lennon International Songwriting Contests.

The album is also a tribute to Robert Bowen, who was killed when a car struck him as he rode his bike in Manhattan late August.  Live, the band performs with bassists who were friends with Robert, plus drummer Luciana Padmore (from Joe's band Stratospheerius).  The group has donated some of its earnings and CD sales to Robert's children.

Best known for his work on the 7-string electric violin and lead singing with the rock group Stratospheerius, Joe Deninzon plays acoustic violin in this Trio.  Joe has performed as a solo violinist with the New York City Ballet, and on album or in concert with Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Jane Monheit, Everclear, Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, Smokey Robinson, and Les Paul.  A 10-time BMI Jazz Composer's grant recipient and a winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, his original music has been used on CMT, MTV VH1, Comedy Central, National Geographic, the Travel Channel and the History Channel.

Infantree Instigate Cockfight in “Mourning Glory”

Three-fourths of California quartet Infantree may still be under 21, but with their startlingly sophisticated songwriting chops and lush vocal harmonies the young musicians are already composing timeless music.  Signed to Vapor Records (Jonathan Richman, Everest, Tegan & Sara), the prolific band has released both an EP and a full-length this year.  The latter of which, titled Would Work, will be re-released in early March with extra tracks and a bonus disc of video content.  Neil Young also invited the guys to perform at this year’s Bridge School Benefit alongside artists like Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Modest Mouse, and Grizzly Bear.

With three songwriting members that take turns on lead vocals, Infantree have no true frontman.  As a result, their highly collaborative approach creates a unique chemistry and the details of each of their songs are masterfully tailored.  It also allows for a diverse set of influences to find their way into the band’s music.  The band weaves in sun-soaked Americana, intricate baroque pop, dreamy psychedelia, and infectious Spanish melodies, to name a few.

The group has made a video for Would Work track “Mourning Glory.”  The song slyly and seamlessly shifts between a forlorn, banjo-driven section and a wistful Latin-flavored groove.  If you haven’t seen the video yet, click HERE to watch the boys don chicken suits and duke it out in a human cockfight.

Infantree’s attention to detail covers all aspects of the band, from consistently churning out charming videos for their songs to the band name itself.  The guys explain the metaphor behind the name “Infantree” in their own words here:

"Trees are carbon dioxide reducing, erosion preventing, oxygen producing, majestic, and sturdy life-forms that grow with their environment - not in spite of it (like industrial-age humans). Infantree is a symbol for growth. Whether it be intellectual, spiritual, physical, or emotional; growth is growth. If left unchecked, exponential growth could devour prosperity as we know it. Only when it's applied within a means does growth reach it's true potential of ceaseless sustanability. Infantree applies this method by way of harmony, like-mindedness, and an articulation of each indvidual's role/capacity as a musician/human-being. At the same time the use of childlike reckless abandon seems key to wading through the water-mark left by the mainstream mindset. This dynamic has helped the members of Infantree to spread their roots as friends while simultaneously growing as a band."

Energetic & Inspiring, Spiritual Rez is delivering the goods

This 6-piece roots-reggae, rock outfit is packing out clubs on a nightly basis and breaking out brand new material off of their newest release, The NexusSpiritual Rez is quickly becoming the talk of 2010.

Winners of the 2007 Boston Music Award for Best World Music Act and Alumni of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, the band provides a fresh blend of Reggae, Funk, Afrobeat and Rock to give one of the most energetic live shows around.

The band’s newest release, The Nexus, is a winning combination of the group’s positive songwriting, energy-filled live performances and their heavily inspired roots-reggae sound. “Alone Again”, showcases the group’s ability to create infectious grooves mixed with bright horn lines and searing guitar, all while giving a nod to the influences of an earlier, gentler, Wailers sound.  The powerful, “Rollin’ Dutches”, captures the band’s Ska-punk roots with tight changes and quick-lipped lyrics. The albums closing cut,  “More Than I Am”, brings everything all together.  The bands positive grasp on life shines through in Toft Willingham and Van Gordon Martin’s lyrics as the rest of the group holds it down.  The dueling patterns of guitar and horns are very tasteful and the ending crescendo reels in the listener, leaving them wanting more.

What really shines about The Nexus, is how the band’s lively stage performance and organic musicianship is captured in the studio.  The Sweat-inducing, body-shaking grooves that are created every night on tour, are recreated and mixed with expertise.  This allowed the band to formulate, The Nexus, into an emotion filled experience that really punctuates the being of Spiritual Rez.

There’s no stopping Spiritual Rez!  After years of touring the country, performing at prestigious events (Bear Creek Music Festival, Camp Bisco and The Lake Eden Arts Festival) and promoting an uplifting mix of music and attitude, the band has been fortunate to share the stage with many of their influences.  These include George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Toots and The Maytals, Steel Pulse and Bernie Worrell (Funkadelic original member, Talking Heads), who has often been a featured member. These experiences have given Spiritual Rez the ability to hone their sound and songwriting, but also share their take on reggae and funk with some of the biggest innovators of those genres.

The Boston-based band has been described by Skipper’s Smokehouse (Tampa, FL) as having “the ferocious live energy and bombast of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and PFunk, to their own blending of chill island grooves with raucous urban tribal vibes.

Their live experience continues to leave a trail of worn-out dancers as Spiritual Rez is now recognized as a band with "a higher consciousness of respect and energy through music" and will continue to grow in the hearts of music fans across the globe.

Parlovr Unveil Cover Art & Tracklisting / East Coast Tour To Be Announced Soon

Meet Parlovr (pretend the V is a U when you say it). Over the last few years, these three Montrealers have been bringing their manic melee of indie pop to the musically-curious masses. They’ve already amassed plenty of attention from tasters and tastemakers alike via their blissfully bizarre tracks and seizure-inducing live shows; however, after recently signing onto the Dine Alone Records roster, the band is ready to make some serious noise in the new decade – in more ways than one…
Initially formed in a Mile-End loft during the winter of 2006 by guitarist/vocalist Louis David Jackson and keyboardist/vocalist Alex Cooper, the current incarnation of Parlovr came about in 2007 when drummer Jeremy MacCuish entered the fold – a catalyst to the fusion of the foiling songwriting styles of the original two. Since, the band has taken off on its own sonic tangent, appropriately dubbed “sloppy pop” in the past; stripped down but salacious and spastic.
The music is about as diverse as the city that spawned it – an interweaving of styles that takes on a shape and shimmer of its own. Raw and reverb-soaked, their independently-released, self-titled debut dropped in late 2008, recorded and produced by Martin Horn at Digital Bird Studios.
The songs found therein are rooted in dramatic dynamics not unlike those that exist between Cooper and Jackson’s foiling songwriting styles – quiet and loud; screams and whispers; sing-alongs and spacey instrumentals; warm low-end and crisp, shimmering leads; short pop jabs and extended epics. You get the idea, right? It’s quirky, it’s catchy, and while it’s full of familiar throwbacks to ‘60s pop, ‘80s post-punk, and ‘90s garage, it’s also refreshing.
Since its release, the album has garnered some great ink in pretty much every well-respected left-of-centre publication here in Canada – Hero Hill, Chartattack, and Hour among them. Even some from the south are taking notice, with Spin magazine calling the band one of the “5 to watch” out of Montreal (it’s pretty much the new Seattle) and The New York Times sharing kind words about their live show. It’s obvious the bandwagon is starting to fill up, and everybody on it is dancing.
Parlovr has spent time bringing their melodies on the road, having toured extensively throughout Canada, New York, France and Europe alongside indie pop peers like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.
With all of the pieces in place, Parlovr seems set to bring their melodic mayhem to a widespread populace for the new decade.
It’s 2010, and it’s finally cool to say you listen to Parlovr music.
