2011 Outside Lands Festival Part II

Bragging of Friday night’s extensive substance abuse while exposing their bare midriffs to the golden, mellow California sunshine, throngs of eager fans poured into Golden Gate Park for a Saturday morning encore.  Attendees threw back booze with gusto all throughout the day, padding promoters’ profit margins with $7 glasses of Heineken.

Zach Deputy Celebrates Another Day

On his upcoming release Another Day, soul-singer and guitarist Zach Deputy-- with the help of Grammy-winning producer Scott Jacoby-- taps into the spirit of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder, creating a soulful rhythm and blues album rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs. The record will appeal to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, while retaining a classic sound and feel. Full of hope and anticipation of the promise of another day, a new day, it is a pivotal point in the career of a touring musician heretofore known as a master of live looping and a staple in the grass-roots club and festival circuit.

An appropriately titled album, Another Day is truly an album in the classic sense— a collection of songs that come from the same time and place, inspired by the same muse. Reflective and introspective, it provides a glimpse at the soul of an artist and the depth of a songwriter. As a boy, the music of Zach Deputy's Puerto Rican, Cruzan and Irish heritage was cooked up in the South Carolina heat. The Calypso rhythms and folk songs of St. Croix competed with the R&B / soul of pioneers like James Brown and Ray Charles for space on the family stereo. As Zach honed his craft, a unique hybrid of these influences emerged, ultimately creating the signature Zach Deputy sound-- what he calls "Island-infused, Drum 'n' Bass, Gospel-Ninja-Soul" that has made him a hot up-and-coming artist. However, this is the one-man-band sweaty dance party side of the coin. That same gumbo of influences has the humid, sultry, quieter side, too. This is the side of the slow dances... the bodies pressed close together and the quiet voices whispering in each other’s' ears. Another Day is a warm, mellow album, one that is perfect for after hour soirees... and if Zach Deputy is about sunshine,Another Day is about sunsets.

Best described as soulful rhythm and blues, Another Day features 11 original tracks produced with Grammy award winning Scott Jacoby over just 5 days in Mission Sound Recording in Brooklyn, NY. To handle the ever-present Latin, Caribbean and African elements in Zach Deputy's backbeat and place them in the contemporary soul / pop format of the songs, Jacoby tapped Graham Hawthorne (Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, David Byrne) for the drum kit. Bassist Al Carty came into the studio after having played four church gigs that day. Despite the list of artists he has recorded or toured with (Lou Reed, De La Soul, Carrie Underwood, Gavin DeGraw), the church gigs alone proved that Jacoby was on the mark with this choice for the low end. Zach Deputy is, after all, a soul singer whose music is underpinned by Gospel as much as by any other musical idiom. Equally at home in the Gospel tradition, pianist / organist Will Buthod (Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Alicia Keys, The Harlem Gospel Choir) completed the studio trio that fleshed out Zach's vision for the recording-- a vision made real by Jacoby's pitch perfect choice of accompanists. These four accomplished professionals met for the first time on the first day of recording and worked as if they were old friends with a common purpose.

Another Day will hit the streets on September 27th following four shows in two days at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. The event will kick off a full-scale national tour with dates booked throughout the country. For ticketing and performance information check out www.zachdeputy.com.

The Festy Experience is More Than Just Great Music!

The 2nd annual Festy Experience will take place October 7th - 9th, 2011 at the Concert Grounds at Devils Backbone in Nelson County, VA. Curated by bluegrass-bending group The Infamous Stringdusters, The Festy revolves around the essential festival elements of good music, local sustenance, and the great outdoors. A confirmed lineup is listed below and tickets are currently on sale. More bands and activities will be announced in the coming weeks.

"The Stringdusters are practically obsessed with festivals," admits Travis Book of the Infamous Stringdusters.  "We learned to play at festivals, we met at festivals, and we love the community created by festivals. The Festy Experience is amazing music, local food and libations, and a legit outdoor lifestyle experience. It's our ideal weekend; a good hang and an awesome party in a beautiful place."

Of course live music is an integral part to The Festy Experience. Despite The Infamous Stringdusters forming numerous connections to the “bluegrass” world, The Festy does not strictly feature bluegrass talent. Instead, The Stringdusters invited the diverse bands and musicians they've met on the road and at other festivals. Featured performers include Railroad Earth, David Grisman Sextet, Brett Dennen, Jim Lauderdale, Emmitt-Nershi Band, Toubab Krewe, The Wood Brothers, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and more.

Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, and only a short distance from the historical Appalachian Trail, The Festy provides a premiere location for camping and outdoor enthusiasts. Just up the road from the Concert Grounds (and accessible by shuttle for spectators), the Virginia Off-Road Series will host the Devils Backbone Challenge mountain bike race. Trail blazers can take part in the Blue Ridge Burn 5k/10k run hosted by Blue Ridge Outdoors, and nature lovers of all levels are encouraged to hike mountain trails, and participate in yoga classes.

The Festy has also taken major strides to provide exceptional and sustainable food options for their attendees. Community partners The Rock Barn, Devils Backbone Brewery and Java Depot offer on-site dining and sustenance options. Locally brewed beer is supplied by Star Hill and Devils Backbone breweries and select wines will be available from Nelson County Vineyards.

A limited quantity of weekend festival tickets including camping are available for $99 and currently on sale through The Festy website at www.thefesty.com. Day passes will not be sold if the festival sells out in advance.

2011 Gathering of the Vibes | Part III

Clouds and a breeze. That’s all it took. Last night when I lay down I was sure that the heat would never break. Why should it? There wasn’t a cloud in the sky at 2AM and yet the heat hadn’t let lost on its grip of the weekend. The hope of a quick temperature change had no meteorological phenomenon left to hold onto.

2011 Gathering of the Vibes | Part I

Is there a festival with a cooler name than Gathering of the Vibes? Immediately all festivals with the word festival or fest are eliminated from the name competition- I hope I don’t have to tell you why.
