Girl Talk's New Album, All Day, Out Today

Celebrating 10-plus years of sample-obsessed production and relentless touring, Gregg Gillis returns with All Day, his fifth album as Girl Talk, and his most epic, densely layered, and meticulously composed musical statement to date.  Continuing the saga from the previously acclaimed albums, Night Ripper and Feed The Animals, Gillis lays down a more diverse range of samples to unfold a larger dynamic between slower transitions and extreme cut-ups.  With the grand intent of creating the most insane and complex pop collage album ever heard, large catalogs of both blatantly appropriated melodies and blasts of unrecognizable fragments were assembled for the ultimate Girl Talk record (clocking in at 71 minutes and 373 samples).

Earlier this year, Girl Talk finally took a break from touring, festival dates, and college shows, in order to create this album that is now being released immediately after its completion.  While posting the album as a free download on the Illegal Art label's site allows All Day to reach his fan-base quickly and with minimal cost, Gillis spent more time on this album than any previous release and considers it the most fully realized and evolved manifestation of the Girl Talk aesthetic.

Download Girl Talk’s All Day here for free.

(There are no strings attached to this free download – no email address needed, no potential donation, or anything of that nature, and it will remain this way indefinitely.)

Since the release of Feed The Animals, things have flourished for Girl Talk. He's played almost 300 shows and hardly taken a full week off from hitting the road. He's playing even larger venues and making even more of a spectacle -- he's employed a small crew of toilet paper launching stage hands, who also propel confetti, balloons, and inflate oddly chosen props into the audience. For the New Year's Eve show to ring in 2010, a team was hired to build a life-size house, with attention to fine details, on the stage at Chicago's Congress Theater.  Described as the craziest house party ever, Girl Talk continues to please live audiences as the mass of sweaty bodies at his shows continually grows. Touring highlights from the last couple of years include the Vancouver Olympics, large festivals such as Coachella, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, V-Fest, Sasquatch, Rothbury, Monolith, Planeta Terra, and trips to Australia, Japan, South America, Europe, and Mexico.

As previously announced, Girl Talk will be touring extensively in 2011 in support of this release.

HAAM Benefit Day 2010 The Best Ever

The 5th Annual HAAM Benefit Day, held on Tuesday, September 21, brought in the largest amount of funds ever raised for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, its member-musicians and the healthcare service programs they participate in: $195,000, the organization reported today.

It was a record-breaking day all around, with the largest number of Austin area businesses making a donation or pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds — more than 200 — and the most musical performances (more than 140) heard on any HAAM Benefit Day.

“We at HAAM are incredibly pleased with the response to the fifth HAAM Benefit Day,” said Keith Carmichael, HAAM Benefit Day 2010 Committee chairman. “The number of businesses and the number of entertainers participating — not to mention the amount of funds raised, the largest ever — shows us how much this city and the people in it appreciate live music and what this organization is doing to make sure it flourishes.”

In addition to acknowledging Whole Foods Market for its generosity in serving for five consecutive years as HAAM Benefit Day presenting sponsor, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians is grateful for the tens of thousands of dollars donated not only by Whole Foods Market but also by C3 Presents and South by Southwest® over the years of HAAM Benefit Day.
It also recognizes Texas Heritage Songwriters Association for its donation that matched the contribution of the Austin community on September 21 as residents ate out, shopped and donated on behalf of their favorite music-makers.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians also announced today the date for the 6th Annual HAAM Benefit Day: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, when business, the music community and residents will again unite to keep music alive and well in Austin.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides access to affordable healthcare services to Austin’s low-income, uninsured working musicians with a focus on prevention and wellness. Since HAAM’s 2005 start, more than 2,200 of the city’s battalion of hard-working musicians have joined and gained access to regular, cost-effective healthcare services. Medical, dental, mental, hearing and vision health services are provided by Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Foundation, The SIMS Foundation, Estes Audiology and Prevent Blindness Texas. HAAM’s annual Corporate Battle of the Bands and HAAM Benefit Day have become signature events behind a great cause: maintaining the health of the musicians who help make Austin such an enviable place to live and work. Sidi Touré Releases New Album, 'Sahel Folk'

Sidi Touré, born in 1959 in the ancient town of Gao, Mali, made his first guitar as a child, constructing it from his wooden writing slate. Growing up, Sidi Touré faced a conflict between the inexorable pull of music and the expectations of family and society, plus the significance and onus of a past that came with being born into a noble family. The Touré family had been sung about, and sung to, by traditional griots for centuries, but until Sidi Touré challenged the rules as a small boy, the Touré’s did not sing. Despite his family’s disapproval, Sidi became the lead singer of his school’s band, and then became the youngest member of Gao’s regional orchestra, the Songhaï Stars, who played bi-annual festivals like the Bamako Biennale and toured both regionally and nationally. After winning the award for best singer twice, he took the band to the northern regions of Mali and to Niger, and toured much of the western Sahel region. Throughout his time making music, Sidi’s sound has both captured and challenged his roots. His music moves from the translucent swaying takamba to the trance inducing Holley, while the lyrics often address many non-traditional issues. Sidi has a critical mind and his songs have a purpose.

At its heart, Sahel Folk, Thrill Jockey’s debut release with Sidi Touré, is an album of friends reuniting around a glass of tea. It’s Sidi Touré’s second album, but the first time most of his collaborators have been documented. Chronicled in a live “field-recording” style at Sidi’s sister’s house, the simplicity of the takes highlight the beauty of the songs and the skill of the players. Each track on the album is a duet recording of Sidi and one friend, a product of a very specific two-day process. On the first day, the friends would meet, play, and choose a song over a glass of tea. On the second day they would record the song, allowing themselves just two takes to retain the spontaneity of the recording and reunion. It was the original intent of Covalesky, the album’s producer, to create an historical document about the traditions of Gao, and to mix the audio of Sidi and his friends’ songs with street recordings and interviews. However, once the recording started, everything changed. Covalesky puts it best when he says “In the face of such beauty and power delivered so simply by Sidi Touré and his friends, there was nothing to add. Everything was there.”

Thrill Jockey Records is honored to be releasing Sidi Touré’s second album, Sahel Folk, due out January 25, 2011.

Honda Returns to Austin City Limits Music Festival as Official Eco-Partner

In the tradition of American Honda's sustainability efforts at music festivals, Honda will once again serve as an official eco-partner at 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) in Austin, Texas taking place October 8 through 10. Honda will sponsor one of the main stages, called the Honda Stage, at the annual music festival and present the Honda Hybrid Zone, which will feature Honda's entire hybrid vehicle lineup: the CR-Z sport hybrid coupe; Insight hybrid sedan; and the Civic Hybrid sedan.

As one of the premier contemporary music festivals in the country, Austin City Limits is a three-day event held in Austin's historic Zilker Park. The festival brings together more than 130 bands on eight stages and draws almost 200,000 attendees to experience noteworthy music in a sustainable, environmentally friendly atmosphere. These two priorities match well with Honda's long-term support of the arts and overall environmental leadership. Over the course of the three-day festival, 15 bands are scheduled to perform on the Honda stage, including headliners Sonic Youth, Matt and Kim, and The National.

"It was a natural fit for Honda to return to ACL with an even bigger presence this year considering our deep commitment to environmental initiatives and long standing contribution to the arts community," said Tom Peyton, senior manager of Honda national advertising.

Along with the stage, there will be a special Honda Hybrid Zone display which will feature the entire lineup of Honda hybrid vehicles and several eco-minded activities such as a mobile device "charging center" powered by bicycles. Attendees to the Hybrid Zone will also have the opportunity to enter to win an all-new 2011 CRZ sport hybrid coupe.

American Honda is continuing its industry-leading efforts to address the environmental challenges of global climate change, emissions reduction, and energy sustainability through a comprehensive approach. This approach involves further improvements to gasoline-engine fuel efficiency; the development of real-world alternatives to gasoline, including natural gas and the hydrogen-powered fuel cell car; and technology for refueling alternative fuel vehicles. Over the past 33 years, Honda has remained a fuel-efficiency leader, including 24 years at the top of the EPA's automobile fuel-economy rankings.

Tell President Obama to increase fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks

Every day our cars and trucks guzzle an eye-popping 378 million gallons of gasoline, spewing millions of tons of global warming pollution into the air. This accounts for about 40 percent of U.S. oil consumption, with freight trucks adding another 14 percent.

Saving oil in transportation is crucial for reducing our perilous foreign energy dependence and addressing the climate challenge. Improving vehicle technology also would keep our domestic auto industry competitive in a world where fuel efficiency has become a significant advantage in the global marketplace.

About Moog Music:

Asheville is the headquarters of Moog Music, the company Bob Moog formed in 1963.  Moog’s push for continual innovation permeates the company’s culture to this day.  In 2008, they produced the groundbreaking Moog Guitar and more projects are currently in development.  2010 marks a landmark in the company’s history as the 40th anniversary of the MiniMoog, one of the most popular of the Moog synthesizers, which will certainly be a focus of the MoogFest 2010 weekend.
