First Aid Kit Head Into The Studio With Producer Mike Mogis

First Aid Kid - the Swedish duo of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg - are currently recording with acclaimed producer Mike Mogis at his ARC Studios in Omaha, NE.They'll spend the next month working on the follow-up to their highly praised debut album, The Big Black & The Blue, released last year on Wichita Recordings. In addition to being known as a member of Bright Eyes and Monsters Of Folk, Mogis is a renowned producer who has worked with artists including The Concretes, Cursive, Lightspeed Champion, Rilo Kiley, Sea Wolf, and Pete Yorn, among many others.

"We met Mike at Austin City Limits last year. He saw our show there and we got talking about recording an album together," said Klara and Johanna. "Bright Eyes was the band that got us inspired to start making music, so working with Mike is quite surreal for us. We feel honored. So far things are going really well and we believe we're in the process of creating something very special. This truly is a dream come true."

First Aid Kit broke out last year with the release of The Big Black & The Blue, garnering praise from AOL Music's Spinner blog, NPR's All Songs Considered, Nylon, and SPIN ('Breaking Out' artist), among others, and earning spots on HearYa, Nylon, and PasteMagazine.com's 'Best of 2010' lists. The year proved to be one of 'firsts' for the young band, who were only 17 (Klara) and 19-years old (Johanna) at the time of the album's release.

March 2010 saw First Aid Kit perform in the US for the first time at SXSW, which they followed with their first stateside headlining tour in June that included a sold-out stop at New York's Mercury Lounge. In September, they toured Australia and released a 7-inch single for album standout "Ghost Town," which featured a spectral cover of Fever Ray's "When I Grow Up" as a B-side in tribute to mentor Karin Dreijer Andersson (Fever Ray, The Knife), whose label Rabid released their debut EP Drunken Trees in 2008. First Aid Kit returned to tour the US again in October, with stops at the Austin City Limits festival and the CMJ Music Marathon (featuring a second sold-out NYC show at Joe's Pub).

The band rang in 2011 with the January release of a Third Man Records Blue Series 7-inch that featured covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and the classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too" (a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version), recorded with Jack White at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, TN.

Andrew Belle live on the Lennon Bus in Austin

At SXSW this year, Andrew Belle was invited aboard the Lennon Bus to perform the track that won the John Lennon Songwriting Award for excellence in their pop category. On the Lennon Bus, Andrew recorded an intimate, live version of "The Ladder," which premieres today on Paste.
.
After his performances at SXSW and the South Beach Food & Wine FestivalAndrew Belle has returned to hometown Chicago to prepare the limited edition re-release of debut LP The Ladder featuring new music and new artwork and has planned a celebration around the release with his biggest Chicago show to date.
Andrew Belle is a new artist on the pop singer/songwriter scene. Residing in both Chicago and Nashville, he is currently touring clubs and universities across the country, and is also a member of the critically acclaimed national tour Ten Out Of Tenn. Andrew released his debut EP All Those Pretty Lights in 2008, containing songs featured in hit TV shows including “90210”, “The Real World”, “Ghost Whisperer” and “Keeping Up With The Kardashians”.
His debut full-length album The Ladder was released in February 2010 on 1L Music. The Ladder reached #1 on iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, scored a spot in the Top 100 chart on iTunes and charted in the Top 25 on the Billboard Heatseakers Chart.  His songs have garnered nationwide airplay including Chicago’s WXRT, Nashville’s WRLT, and Los Angeles’ KCRW. Andrew recently was named “Best Breakout Artist, Chicago” by MTV. Recently, Andrew was awarded with the John Lennon Songwriting Award for excellence in their Pop category for the title song off The Ladder. Fans and critics often refer to his songs as “smart pop”—nuanced melodies and sophisticated, contemplative lyrics coupled with bold, infectious hooks.
2009 saw Nashville / Chicago resident Andrew Belle invited out on the second generation Ten out of Tenn Tour and after an overwhelming response on the road, invited out for the Ten out of Tenn Holiday Tour.  Ten Out of Tenn is a diverse and unique community of artists making organic pop music in the shadows of Nashville's slick commercial country music industry on the road supporting each other every night!  The original Ten out of Tenn debuted in 05 with ten musicians who were at the forefront of the vibrant Nashville pop music scene with over thirty albums released between them.

MilkDrive Releases Studio Album ROAD FROM HOME

MilkDrive, Austin’s phenomenal alt-folk-progressive acoustic string band, will release on April 5 its debut studio album, ROAD FROM HOME, which captures the quartet’s soulful, textural, multi-layer mix of rhythms, tempos, flavors, improvisation and its harmony vocals.

After its Austin CD Release Show, on Friday, April 8, at Saxon Pub, MilkDrive plays a number of nationally acclaimed music festivals: Old Settler’s on April 14, “Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour” on May 9, Pagosa Folk N’ Bluegrass in Colorado in June, and Rockygrass in Lyons, Colo., at the end of July.
ROAD FROM HOME was recorded at Mountainside Audio Labs in Nashville, produced by MilkDrive and Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck), and engineered and mixed by VornDick.
Like its independently released debut live album, the band’s new studio album features fingers flying at “unbelievable” speed, original tunes that go beyond extraordinary and “impeccable” arrangements. Both “Back” and “Dry Creek Inn” from ROAD FROM HOME have the old-school sound, with haunting mandolin and fiddle, but thoroughly modern lyrics on topics such as love and death bring it into the 21st century.

Woodcock Group Debuts 'Water Stories'

Woodcock Group's trio gives jazz listeners a piece of music works that evoke a great characteristic of eloquence impressive for an artist that has not even released its debut CD to stores, until now with Sunset Jazz. This Serbian jazz trio also composes and arranges its music and every song on this ten (10) song full length CD. Woodcock Group’s new debut album, Water Stories (Sunset Jazz Recordings) gives jazz aficionados great evidence there are new music artists in jazz that can carry a wide-ranged music of original songs taken as a conceptual, the album is now available to pre order at Amazon. The Jazz label is continuing to set up the full length CD for the May 3rd street day, with its' Sunset Classics & Jazz (SC&J) division, Sunset Distribution Company and then via Republic Universal for digital distribution into stores.

Woodcock Group is a band that is no doubt aware of its mixing modern jazz with traditional jazz music influenced by, among others, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans and Art Blakey. Born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, in the spring of 2009 pianist and composer Aleksandar Jovanovic founded the "Woodcock Group." What is now a trio with (Aleksandar) Jovanovic, Marko Fabry is on the bass while Aleksandar Cvetkovic does the drum work on the ten (10) song CD. Their first performance was at the "Umbria Jazz Balcanic Windows" Music Festival 2009 in Belgrade, which they won in a competition winning over 28 bands from the south-eastern Europe regions. Not to mention, they were listed in the top six as best young jazz band in Eastern Europe this year. "I not only plan on using this album to springboard a new sense of direction at Sunset Jazz (Recordings)", says label head, Don Lichterman, "we are also in hope of using Alex's (Aleksandar Jovanovic) A&R chops to gain more jazz acts for the label."

The debut album being released at Sunset (Jazz) is inspired by "water" as in a state of a "form" and (Don) Lichterman says that he, "loves the concept" of it. He (Lichterman) goes on to say that he also "loves the deep traditional style of this band (Woodcock Group)." Woodcock Group's debut recording entitled, Water Stories, has already gained international radio play with "Vrelo," the first song being worked to radio this year. And the CD has received great critical acclaim after the label released its initial press to blogs and social networks. Look for the CD to be available in stores everywhere that sells cds along with being made available at every retailer that sells downloads, ringtones and streams, on May 3rd this year!

Ex-Kumbia Kingz / All Starz Frontmen, Ricky Rick & DJ Kane Form New Group 'LA FORMULA'

Grammy award winning artists Ricky Rick & DJ Kane, formerly members of The Kumbia Kingz and Kumbia All Starz, have united their artistic talents to form a new and much needed Kumbia Fusion group called ‘La Formula’. This dynamic duo is currently in the midst of producing and recording their debut alum also called ‘La Formula’ and which is being released on indie label, The Art Of Sound Group. The first single released off their debut album is “Contigo Me Voy”, a danceable fun track with ballad like lyrics, which was released on 1/1/11. The song is destined to become a sensational hit as its popularity with DJ’s across the country is rapidly rising causing its fast climb on radio charts and digital sales worldwide including, Asia, a usually uncharted territory. The song, written and Produced by Grammy & ASCAP Award winning production team Robert “Bobbo” Gomez III & Emilio “YEYO” Cancio-Bello, blends upbeat Kumbia beats with influences of pop, hip hop and dancehall style raggae. The video for the single was recently shot in Las Vegas, Nevada by Director Zues Ali who also directed the famous Lil Wayne Mini Movie. The video illustrates a warm tropical feel of summer, dancing and all around good time, which is in tune with the danceable rhythms set to the love story based lyrics.

This newly formed team are the creative minds behind hits like “Mami”, “Rica y Apretadita”, Por ti baby”, “Shhhhh”, “No tengo dinero” and many other international hits and came together after the recent rupture of the Kumbia All Starz (formerly known as Kumbia Kingz). It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and in the eyes of these talented artists and their innovative producers it was necessary to bring back the genre with new faces, new beats and a whole re-invention to electrify their public. When asked why they chose the name ‘La Formula’ as the name of their new band, they responded “Because putting us together was like a secret formula for great music and a new twist on the Kumbia-Pop genre”. Most recently the group was selected to perform at the prestigious SXSW Festival at the Barbella Patio Stage on Saturday, March 19th and will be performing at the Latin Billboard Conference. Together, they have sold over 20 million copies and have toured through the US, Central and South America as well as performed in major events including Premios Lo Nuestro, Latin Billboards and many more.

Art Of Sound is an indie music bi-lingual label based in Miami and headed by Grammy nominated and ASCAP award winning producer and writer, Emilio “Yeyo” Cancio-Bello. Art of Sound is based on the concept that music is the universal force that bounds cultures together and that language and geography is never a boundary for creativity.

Thomas Dolby's 'Oceana' breaks 20-year silence

Reclusive solo artist Thomas Dolby is preparing to break his 20-year silence with a brand new studio album, A Map of the Floating City, due out this summer. But first, on March 28, Thomas is releasing Oceanea, a three-track EP filled with soaring melodies, intriguing storytelling and vividly cinematic textures. Featuring guest vocals by Eddi Reader, Oceanea sees a return to Dolby’s melodic and atmospheric roots. “The new songs are organic and very personal,” explains Dolby. “The songs on Oceanea are a reflection of my natural home on the windswept English coastline.” These days he writes and records aboard a solar and wind-powered 1930s lifeboat in the garden of his beach house in East Anglia.

Now living back in his native U.K. after 25 successful years in the U.S., Dolby is busy completing A Map of the Floating City, which features appearances by special guest artists Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor, Eddi Reader, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Woolley and Imogen Heap. Says Thomas, “This album does not sound electronic at all. I have zero desire to add to the myriad of machine-based, synth-driven grooves out there. What I do best is write songs, tell stories.”

Thomas Dolby’s impressive recording and production career now stretches over 30 years. His commercial breakthrough came with the 1982 release of his very first album, The Golden Age of Wireless, which featured the hit “She Blinded Me With Science.” Go back a year and Dolby’s innovative synthesizer work was already making its mark: Foreigner’s massive hit single “Waiting for a Girl Like You” with its weaving synth intro — Dolby’s work. Cue 1983 and Thomas Dolby is guesting on Def Leppard’s Pyromania album. In the same year he appears as producer for U.S. rap wonders Whodini, who release an absolute B Boy classic with “Magic’s Wand.” 1984 saw the release of Dolby’s second album, the expansive masterwork The Flat Earth, which alongside Talk Talk’s Colour of Spring (1986) raised the artistic bar considerably. The Flat Earth featured Dolby’s biggest single success, “Hyperactive!,” a fine piece of pop-art funk that was originally written for Michael Jackson. (It still sounds like the eccentric English cousin of Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit.”) The 12” released in the U.K. on the collectable Parlophone Odeon label is treasured amongst beat-head DJs.

From 1985-1992, Thomas Dolby released two more albums — collaborating with George Clinton on the bold Aliens Ate My Buick and 1991’s Astronauts and Heretics, which featured Grateful Dead supremo Jerry Garcia alongside Siouxsie and the Banshees’ Budgie. In addition to his solo output, Dolby produced Prefab Sprout (the classic Prefab albums Steve McQueen and Jordan: The Comeback), Joni Mitchell (Dog Eat Dog), appeared with David Bowie at Live Aid, was part of the all-star cast in Roger Waters’ 1990 “The Wall: Live in Berlin” concert, and performed at the Grammys® with Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.

Dolby quit the music business in the early ’90s and spent many years in Silicon Valley, where he founded tech company Beatnik Inc. and co-invented the polyphonic ringtone synthesizer embedded in more than two billion Nokia mobile phones. In 2001 he became Musical Director of the TED Conference, an annual event in Long Beach, California that attracts some of the world’s foremost thinkers, inventors, and speakers. In this capacity he provides live musical introductions to sessions, sometimes with an eclectic TED House Band, as well as helping secure guest musicians and entertainers for the event. At last year’s conference, Dolby was joined onstage by David Byrne for an inspiring performance of Talking Heads’ “(Nothing But) Flowers.”

Following his involvement in Beatnik Inc., Dolby returned to his musical career and the live arena in 2006. Dates in the U.S., an appearance at O2 in Hyde Park, and a triumphant night at London’s Scala reaffirmed this performer’s importance on the big stage. A 2007 appearance at America’s SXSW festival was followed by a string of further U.K. shows and in 2009 EMI released The Singular Thomas Dolby, which brought together all of Thomas’s great singles on one ace compilation. In 2010 Dolby released Amerikana, a download-only EP exclusive to his online community, The Flat Earth Society. A particular highlight is the richly atmospheric “17 Hills” featuring some virtuoso guitar from Mark Knopfler. Along with Oceanea, these EPs help consolidate Dolby’s fanatical online fan base while previewing music from his upcoming album.

Thomas Dolby has created a further way for fans to get early access to his new material in the shape of an extraordinary social network-based game, The Floating City, to be launched this spring via Facebook, Twitter, and The Flat Earth Society. By building a post-apocalyptic, barter-based trading culture around the objects and places named in Dolby’s songs, solving puzzles related to his lyrics, and discovering clues embedded in unique remixes, players will be able to win a sneak peek of other new songs from the album, as well tickets for a private one-off concert this Summer at which he will perform the new album in its entirety.
