Infantree Instigate Cockfight in “Mourning Glory”

Three-fourths of California quartet Infantree may still be under 21, but with their startlingly sophisticated songwriting chops and lush vocal harmonies the young musicians are already composing timeless music.  Signed to Vapor Records (Jonathan Richman, Everest, Tegan & Sara), the prolific band has released both an EP and a full-length this year.  The latter of which, titled Would Work, will be re-released in early March with extra tracks and a bonus disc of video content.  Neil Young also invited the guys to perform at this year’s Bridge School Benefit alongside artists like Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Modest Mouse, and Grizzly Bear.

With three songwriting members that take turns on lead vocals, Infantree have no true frontman.  As a result, their highly collaborative approach creates a unique chemistry and the details of each of their songs are masterfully tailored.  It also allows for a diverse set of influences to find their way into the band’s music.  The band weaves in sun-soaked Americana, intricate baroque pop, dreamy psychedelia, and infectious Spanish melodies, to name a few.

The group has made a video for Would Work track “Mourning Glory.”  The song slyly and seamlessly shifts between a forlorn, banjo-driven section and a wistful Latin-flavored groove.  If you haven’t seen the video yet, click HERE to watch the boys don chicken suits and duke it out in a human cockfight.

Infantree’s attention to detail covers all aspects of the band, from consistently churning out charming videos for their songs to the band name itself.  The guys explain the metaphor behind the name “Infantree” in their own words here:

"Trees are carbon dioxide reducing, erosion preventing, oxygen producing, majestic, and sturdy life-forms that grow with their environment - not in spite of it (like industrial-age humans). Infantree is a symbol for growth. Whether it be intellectual, spiritual, physical, or emotional; growth is growth. If left unchecked, exponential growth could devour prosperity as we know it. Only when it's applied within a means does growth reach it's true potential of ceaseless sustanability. Infantree applies this method by way of harmony, like-mindedness, and an articulation of each indvidual's role/capacity as a musician/human-being. At the same time the use of childlike reckless abandon seems key to wading through the water-mark left by the mainstream mindset. This dynamic has helped the members of Infantree to spread their roots as friends while simultaneously growing as a band."

New Rubblebucket Mp3: "Michelle" (Beatles Cover)

Fresh off the release of the Triangular Daisies EP (Sin Duda Records), Rubblebucket is giving away the second track from the EP, “Michelle.” The track is the band’s left-field take on The Beatles’ Rubber Soul classic, which finds the band turning McCartney’s somber ballad into a spacey, orchestral groove. The band is currently on their “Triangular Tour,” which so far has taken the band from San Francisco to Maine and will end in Live Oak, FL for the Bear Creek Music Festival. After wrapping up this tour, the band will begin recording their next full-length with Eric Broucek (!!!, Holy Ghost!, Hercules and Love Affair) at DFA Studios in New York City, which should be released in early 2011.

Since the band formed in 2007, pinning down their sound has remained a difficult task.  At times, the band sounds like Brooklyn’s answer to Fela Kuti, with frenetic afrobeat rhythms rubbing elbows with infectious indie-pop hooks and catchy synths. Frontwoman/saxophonist Kalmia Traver explains, "We're children of this noisy age, with access to so much music from across time and space. We soak up all the sounds. What comes out can be unpredictable, but it will be uniquely ours."  Uniquely their own, indeed.

Regardless of where you place the band on the spectrum, the Triangular Daisies EP is a dramatic step forward for the band.  Opening with the title track, “Triangular Daisies” (listen HERE), the band pairs down the fiery grooves found on sophomore album Rubblebucketto craft a psychedelic indie-pop gem, complete with plaintive horns and infectious whistling. The EP also features the band’s undeniably contagious single “Came Out of a Lady,” (watch the video HERE) the recording of which was featured in the first episode of The Masters of Their Day project at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The Triangular Daisies EPends on a high note with the hypnotic live track “L’homme,” recorded during their set at Higher Ground this past May.

Rubblebucket started — like most great bands — at an art show in a defunct milk bottling plant in Burlington, VT.  Kalmia Traver met Alex Toth and soon formed Rubblebucket, building an eight-piece band from scratch with Toth as bandleader and trumpeter, and Traver taking on lead vocals and sax.  The band released their debut album, Rose’s Dream, as The Rubblebucket Orchestra in 2008.  The following year proved to be a big one for the band, with Rubblebucket releasing their self-titled sophomore album. SPIN hailed the band as a "must-hear artist from the 2009 CMJs,” and the band won that year’s Boston Music Award for Live Act of the Year. The band then relocated to Brooklyn, and has since been hard at work recording the follow-up to Rubblebucket, which is slated for release in early 2011.

Tapes N' Tapes at the Fox Theater

Tapes ‘n Tapes is a rock band from Minneapolis, MN, made up of Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion.

Grier said he formed the band in 2003, to “have fun with my friends.  I always wanted to see if I could play music with others and for others.”   Grier and his buddies amassed “tapes ‘n tapes” of noodling, experimental jams and declared themselves officially a band.

In the winter of 2004, the band now known as Tapes ‘n Tapes bought some recording equipment and headed out to a rustic cabin in the woods of Wisconsin.  They recorded their self-titled, now long out of print, seven song EP in three days.  Songs like “Beach Girls” and “50’s Parking” from the EP are still in their live set today.

Next up for the band was recording their critically acclaimed follow up, The Loon.  Appelwick recorded, mixed and produced the eleven song record with the band in one week at a friend’s home studio.  The Loon came out in November of 2005 on ibid records, and no one was ready for what came next.   People started to notice the foursome’s jangly, melodic brand of rock and the band started touring – gaining more and more attention from music critics and fans all over the world.  Even the Thin White Duke took notice.  “’Insistor’ is the first single, and it's cracking. It was a slow grower, but once that chorus digs in there's really no escape,” said Mr. David Bowie.  The prestigious XL Recordings re-released The Loon in July of 2006, the same month Tapes ‘n Tapes made their national television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The band then toured around the world for the next few years- playing shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Wrens.  In 2006 they were honored to play Reading/Leeds, and 2007 saw them rock out at Lollapalooza and Coachella.

When starting to work out songs for their follow up, Walk It Off, the band was asked who their dream producer was.  The obvious answer to them was Mr. Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT).  With twelve songs in hand, the band made the jaunt to upstate New York to live and work with Fridmann for two amazing weeks- one week in September 2007 to record and one week in October 2007 to mix.  However, years of touring, the political climate, and distance from friends and family had changed the band, and given them a different point of view- one that seemed to pervade their sound.  Spin praised the record saying, “the tunes are tighter and performances far more dynamic and aggressive…..they can now pull off jittery punk and understated, graceful melancholy.”  XL released Walk It Off in April of 2008, on the same day the band made their debut on Conan O’Brien.

After touring and supporting Walk It Off for the following year, it was time for a little R & R- rest and relaxation.  They purposefully took their time and tried to get back to a place where the band was fun, and not work.  They also decided to go back to their roots and do everything on their own, with no label involvement.  They cut ties with XL, and re-launched ibid records, their own label which initially released The Loon.  The brothers tapes had saved their pennies over the years and set out to make the record they’ve always wanted to make – Outside.  They wanted to record at home and self-produce, which they did over two weeks at The Terrarium in Minneapolis, MN in March of 2010.   The next step was getting the talented Mr. Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his ears to the mix.  Grier spent two more weeks in Bridgeport, CT, while Katis mixed the record to perfection.  The result is twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show.   Grier said, “We had a great time making Outside and we wanted our enjoyment of the process to be audible in the recording, and I think we succeeded.”  One thing is for sure, Tapes ‘n Tapes feel like they are making music for the right reasons – fun and pure love for music.  And as Grier always says, “Everything else is gravy.”  Outside will be released on January 11, 2011.

DeVotchka @ Boulder Theater | 10/29 & 30

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic and Bolero music with American punk and folk roots.

The quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song How It Ends was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. DeVotchKa composed and performed the majority of the music for the film's soundtrack and were nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

DeVotchKa's latest studio album, A Mad & Faithful Telling, was released on March 18, 2008. DeVotchKa is currently doing a worldwide tour in support of the album's release.

Since its debut performance on Valentine's Day 2009, the band has played numerous shows including sharing the stage with the likes of Amazing Baby, Pink Mountaintops, Wovenhand and The Entrance Band.

With songs as seductively venomous as its name suggests, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake began in October 2008 when veterans of the underground music scene in Denver decided to pursue a mutual interest in darkly atmospheric music with a grounding in dance rhythms. More Info / Buy Tickets

B.B. King at the Boulder Theater - Jan. 22nd

Since the 1950’s, there has been only one King of the Blues – Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King.  Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940’s, he has released over 50 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live At The Regal,” and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together For The First Time.” In 2008, B.B. King released his Grammy winning “One Kind Favor” featuring one of his personal favorites, “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” with Lemon Jefferson.

B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound.  His singing is richly melodic, both vocally and in the “singing” that comes from his guitar.  In B.B.’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille.”

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Mississippi outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola.  He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night.  With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career.  Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competitive musical community where virtually every black musical style was heard.

Vincent Minor Live in NYC This Thursday, Debut AlbumOut Today!

Vincent Minor’s self-titled debut album is out today Social Science Recordings! In celebration, he is playing Piano’s in NYC this Thursday 9/23. The gorgeous indie pop meets Tin Pan Alley melodies juxtaposed with witty and insightful naratives have garnered praise from The Advocate, Venus, CMJ, and many others.  He recently released the “Heavy Metal Lover” MP3 which premiered on PopMatters.  He also recently released the spellbinding first video from the album for “The Trap” which you can see HERE.

Vincent Minor assembled some amazing LA area talents to round out his grand vision for the album including producer Tom Biller (Fiona Apple, Sean Lennon, Where the Wild Things Are), keyboardist Zac Rae (Annie Lennox, My Brightest Diamond), horn player Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe, Rachael Yamagata), and upright bassist Ed Maxwell.  The result is a collection of wryly humorous and troubling tales carried by Minor's tuneful baritone and his lush orchestral production.

Shadow Shadow Shade Release White Horse Trilogy & Debut Album

Los Angeles’ majestic septet Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as Afternoons) are prepping the release of their eagerly awaited, self-titled debut release.  Those who have seen their acclaimed live show know what to expect:  a lush sound that is both grand in spectacle and remarkably intimate.  With seven members that often sing in unison, the group’s haunting melodies sculpt an ethereal, choir-like effect.  Shadow Shadow Shade will be released on October 5th through the group’s own label, Public Records.  It will be available via Junket Boy and at CIMS stores nationwide as well as select additional indie outlets.  It was produced by Grammy-winning Producer/Mixer/Engineer/Musician and SSS member, Tom Biller (Karen O, Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon, Kanye West).

Before the album is released the band is unveiling the three-part epic, post-apocalyptic short film known as the White Horse Trilogy that features several of their songs.  The clip stars Jason Ritter (of NBC’s upcoming drama “The Event”) and Anna WilsonWhite Horse’s director Michael Graham describes it as “an existential science fiction film that personifies and investigates the inner struggle one might go through under the distress of being ripped apart from their lover by the current world they live in, most importantly - war.”  The film is set in the future during World War III, when an unknown force has enslaved the human race.

SSS began as an art project amongst likeminded friends before evolving into an actual band that performed and recorded.  Upon hearing their demos, artist Shepard Fairey became one of the band’s early supporters  He soon designed posters for them that ended up getting plastered all over their hometown of LA.  After playing just one show, the group was offered the coveted residency at Spaceland and subsequently sold out all four weeks – this led to the SSS being invited to perform at IFC’s 2010 SXSW Showcase.

The group has created a stirring pastiche of sounds that takes cues from traditions such as psychedelia, orchestral music, shoegaze, opera, and indie rock among others.  Their enigmatic lyrics seem to have been plucked from a classic, timeless novel that hasn’t been written yet, and every song they compose builds towards a thrilling catharsis.  Click HERE to stream/download the mp3 for the album’s first single, “Say Yes.”

The Black Ryder Announce Tour Dates With The Cult

Straight from the land of OZ, The Black Ryder are set to release their full length Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride on September 21st via Mexican Summer. Harping a comforting 90's sound of rhinestone drone, this amazing record is a true trip from start to finish and will be released digitally, on CD, and vinyl.
Previously released only in Australia in 2009, Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride is chock full of brooding vocals and dark mysterious paths on a pitch black open road. Complimented with comfort by a tambourine beat of dreams, singer Aimee Nash's voice is a soothing romp, effortlessly partnered with guitarist Scott Van Ryper. TBR is a carefully thought out process of melody, sound, texture, time, space, dynamics, mood, and effect. Says Nash "It is a labor of love that is carefully constructed with particular emphasis on melody, harmony, and placement. This makes more sense to me than trying to draw comparisons or categorizing ourselves into any one genre or style of music." Standouts like "All That We See" and "Gone without Feeling"  are psychedelic markers of calm on this strong debut.
Whilst this collection of recorded works was all done by the band themselves, The Black Ryder has had the great pleasure of working with Peter Hayes & Leah Shapiro of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Graham Bonnar (ex-Swervedriver). The band made their live debut on the B.R.M.C Australian tour (January 2008) and have since opened for The Raveonettes, The Brian Jonestown Massacre & The Charlatans.

Tea Leaf Green, Oct. 14 @ the Fox Theatre

San Francisco-based band Tea Leaf Green got their start in the relationship formed between guitarist Josh Clark and drummer Scott Rager, who played in a high-school band together in Arcadia, CA. After graduation, Rager enrolled at San Francisco State College, where he met bassist Ben Chambers. When Clark moved to San Francisco, the three began playing together as a trio. Their first paying gig was attended by Trevor Garrod, a singer/songwriter and keyboard player who had moved to San Francisco looking for other musicians to play with. Garrod met the three others, and soon they were playing together as a quartet. They built a following in Northern California and self-released the albums Tea Leaf Green, Midnight on the Reservoir (2001), Live at Slim's, San Francisco CA (2003), Living in Between (2004), and Live at the Independent (2004).

They issued their first national release, Taught to Be Proud, in 2005 and within a year they were opening for Gov't Mule, Trey Anastasio, Dave Matthews Band and a host of other lauded musicians. In 2007, longtime bass player Ben Chambers left the band and was replaced by Reed Mathis, formerly of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Mathis's stylistic versatility on bass proved to be the perfect fit for the band. In 2008, Tea Leaf Green went on to re-release their first three studio albums as the triple-CD compilation entitled Seeds. Later that year the band followed up with their next studio album Raise Up the Tent.

In June 2010 Tea Leaf Green released Looking West, their first studio album in 2 years. The release is a compilation of road-tested, fan favorite songs that the band has never recorded in the studio. The album marks a new chapter for Tea Leaf Green and represents the artistic and individual growth of the band since their formation more than a decade ago.

In a few short years, these road warriors have built a strong following, consistently filling venues across the country and becoming a warmly received, go-to band on the festival circuit with stand-out performances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, 10K Lakes, and The Echo Project, among others. Sharing some of the style and substance of musical contemporaries My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, and the Raconteurs, Tea Leaf Green conjures the spirit of bands like '70s Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead, taking classic sounds and giving them a present-day polish. Tea Leaf Green reminds us at every turn just how alluring rock 'n' roll can be.
