Innova Disc Golf Names Zach Deputy Celebrity Ambassador

Zach Deputy has been appointed as one of the first "Celebrity Ambassadors" for Innova Champion Discs, the industry leader of disc golf, one of America’s fastest growing outdoor sports. Zach Deputy, an emerging international musician, recording artist, an avid disc golfer is excited by the opportunity. He looks forward to helping expand the game by turning new people on to it.

Innova, recognizing that Zach Deputy represents both an active, popular spokesperson for their company and the sport, is equally excited for him to join the Innova family. "Zach, in so many ways, is the embodiment of this sport. His passion and enthusiasm for the game represents everything that is good about disc golf. It is a game everyone can enjoy and we are in a time when recreation is extremely important." Deputy, for his part, agrees with this characterization but warns people who think of him as merely a celebrity face: "I’m no Ken Climo, but I’ll beat your grandma!"

For the past three years, Zach Deputy has been touring North America and playing disc golf regularly across the continent. As a touring musician, Zach had only random opportunities to get some exercise and outdoor fun between all the travel and performances. Disc golf was presented to Zach by his Tour Manager (an avid disc golfer and course designer) as a great option. Soon Zach, Brian (Tour Manager) and Jeremy (Production Manager) were spending every spare hour at the links and at shops buying newer, better, specialized discs. The affordability and ease of play made disc golf an ideal fit for Zach and his crew.

In November of 2011, Deputy hosted the disc golf tournament at the Bear Creek Music Festival (Live Oak, FL). The registration proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in Haiti. In March of 2011, Deputy hosted his own music and disc golf event at the same location. He has recently been invited to host Disc Jam 2011, a music and disc golf event in Sturbridge, MA, this June. The convergence of Deputy's love of performing music and playing disc golf is perfectly presented in Disc Jam 2011. The event represented a bit of regional saturation from a business standpoint, but given the disc golf aspect of the event, Deputy and his management were able to justify participation. "I am really psyched to play music, of course", says Deputy, "but I see this as more of a disc golf event. I look forward to hosting another tournament, turning others on to the game, and using disc golf to enhance the concert goer’s experience." Through Zach Deputy's involvement, Disc Jam 2011 is now officially sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).

Since its origins in the early 60's, following the success of Wham-O's Frisbee, the PDGA was established in 1975, and is now the governing body for the sport. Disc golf has grown at a rate of 12-15 percent annually for more the past 3 decades, with nearly 3,000 courses in the United States and well over 3,000 globally. Disc golf is now played in over 40 countries worldwide, primarily in North America, Central and Western Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Regardless of which reality has fueled the other, Innova (established in 1983) has emerged as the clear leader in disc golf equipment and accessories during this time of dramatic growth. The Celebrity Ambassador position is a new one for Innova, and includes other notable public figures and entertainers, including the likes of hydrofoil world record holder Billy Rossini, Eric Friedman (Creed) and the Nashville-based band Framing Hanley. For Innova, Zach Deputy's audience represents a key segment of the population who ought to be playing the sport. Innova Team Manager Jonathan Poole said recently, "Zach is special. Positive energy just pours out of him and touches you immediately. The world needs more of that. His personality shines through on the golf course, just as it does on stage.  Zach is a perfect fit for disc golf and for our company, and we are honored to lend him our support."

The Wailers and Duane Stephenson: Two Reggae Powerhouses in Aspen

The Wailers, the world’s most celebrated reggae group in the world, are getting back to their roots with their new 3-singer line-up when they embark on their 2011 U.S. Tour.  The new line-up includes Yvad, Koolant and Danglin as well as original member and the band’s musical director Aston “Familyman” Barrett. The band will be using the tour to bring attention to their new single “A Step For Mankind“ which was written by Duane Stephenson specifically for the World Food Programme.  They will be donating unused funds from the band’s hospitality riders directly to the United Nations’ World Food Program to help stop world hunger.

“A Step for Mankind,” recorded in Jamaica specifically for Oniric Records’ Solution for Dreamers: Season 3 is the band’s first studio song in more than 16 years. The band has been supporting the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) efforts to eradicate hunger throughout the world.  The new song calls for world unity and strength to support the ongoing struggle against world hunger. The band is joined on the track by the Wailers’ new singer Koolant, a fresh talent from the heart of St. Thomas known for blazing a positive future for reggae music with his work. The track also introduces Dr Dre protégé Bishop Lamont, an up-and-coming rapper, who contributes a magical flow in the track’s breakdown.  Graced by the Wailers’ undeniably distinctive groove, “A Step for Mankind” is a small taste of more music forthcoming from the legendary group.

Formed in Jamaica in the late 1960s, The Wailers are one of the most successful reggae bands of all time, selling 250 million albums, and playing live to an estimated 24 million people worldwide. Wailers’ bass player Aston “Familyman” Barrett is recognized throughout the world as the architect of reggae.  A revered innovator, he joined The Wailers in 1969, quickly becoming singer-songwriter Bob Marley’s right-hand man and musical director. On record and on stage, his inimitable style became an essential part of the Wailers’ sound. Following Marley’s death in 1981, “Fams” took the reins as the band’s leader, spearheading performances to adoring crowds the world over, as well as the band’s involvement with the fight against global hunger.

Duane Stephenson recognized one of reggae’s most talented sons, is promoting the release of his latest album, “Black Gold”, and is joining the tour as special guest. This is Stephenson’s sophomore album, following the top-selling “August Town”.  He is also the writer behind “A Step for Mankind” which he will be performing on tour with the Wailers at each performance.  His new 15-track studio album with 14 original songs and is riding high in the charts sees Stephenson working with legendary reggae producer, Dean Fraser, the mastermind behind the majority of production on Black Gold.

Black Gold encompasses Stephenson's growth mentally, emotionally, and musically. From ballads to roots reggae, his musical skills and heartfelt sentiments on this album will resonate with reggae fans and be sure to gain him new ones. Such is the quality of Black Gold , Steve 'Flash' Juon of Rapreviews.com raves that “...so powerful is his vocal tone and the diaphragm which pushes it out over the microphone that almost every word will make perfect sense to even the most jaded listener who thinks they can't understand Caribbean music...”

“A Step for Mankind” calls for world unity and strength to support the ongoing struggle against world hunger.

Formed in Jamaica in the late 1960s, The Wailers have gone on to become the most successful reggae band of all time, selling 250 million albums, and playing live to an estimated 24 million people worldwide. The Wailers’ leader and musical director Aston “Familyman” Barrett, helped forge the template for reggae with his booming, thunderous bass patterns. But more than just a bass player, Family Man was also the right-hand man of former band leader Bob Marley. He also played a large part in arranging Marley’s songs and co-produced a number of the late icon’s albums and even taught Marley how to play guitar. This year celebrates Familyman’s fortieth year with The Wailers.

“For more than forty years, The Wailers have been about spreading a positive message to our audiences,” says Fams. “With the World Food Programme’ campaign, we want to get the word out beyond the audience – so even if these people can’t feel it musically, they can feel it spiritually. I can’t think of a better way to give thanks for forty years in the Wailers than giving back to the people.”

The Wailers continue their relentless touring schedule bringing their message of peace and “one love” to their audiences worldwide.  They will be spreading their message throughout the U.S. in 2011.

“A Step for Mankind” is available at iTunes with ALL proceeds from the song going towards the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) to help stop world hunger.

Help protect Arctic wildlife

The Western Arctic Reserve may be less well-known than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, but its wildlife populations are every bit as unique, spectacular and endangered.

Please take a minute to ask the Obama Administration to grant the strongest possible protection to the Western Arctic Reserve.

Nearly a century ago, the Western Arctic Reserve was set aside as a “National Petroleum Reserve”, but it remains one of our continent’s last, largely untouched tracts of wilderness and wildlife habitat.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is developing a new area-wide plan for the Reserve, providing an ideal opportunity to safeguard its greatest natural treasures -- so-called “Special Areas” -- from destructive oil and gas development.

These Special Areas -- some established at the direction of Congress in the late 1970’s and others proposed by conservationists -- include the Colville River, Teshekpuk Lake, Utukok Uplands, Kasegaluk Lagoon, Dease Inlet, Peard Bay, Ikpikpuk River and the DeLong Mountains and Foothills Special Areas.

The vast network of coastal lagoons, deep lakes, sedge grass meadows and streams that make up the prized Teshekpuk Lake region provide the critical calving grounds for one of the largest caribou herds in Alaska, as well as summer habitat for polar bears. A staggering variety of birds also take refuge in these wetlands, some migrating from as far south as Antarctica.

Along the northwestern coast of the Western Arctic Reserve, up to 3,500 beluga whales gather in the Kasegaluk Lagoon every year to feed and bear their young.

The vast wilderness of the Reserve supports more than just Arctic wildlife. Inupiat Eskimos have subsisted here for thousands of years by following the caribou herds.

Many of these areas have not yet been disturbed, and this may be our last best chance to preserve them for the future. Please tell the BLM that it’s time to grant the Western Arctic Reserve the protection it deserves.

Thank you for taking action to protect our last Arctic wildlands and wildlife.

Then we make first time stops at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheatre in Wilmington, NC and the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA before a weekend run through some of our favorite east coast stops including The Norva, Rams Head Live and 9:30 Club. Along the way we will celebrate our time in Baltimore and DC with a Cap Centre Weekend. On 9/17 and 9/18 DSO will choose from the legendary Grateful Dead Capital Centre shows and will recreate that show in its entirety. We will then round off our tour with a special acoustic set at Mexicali Live along with stops in Munhall, PA, Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, Albany, Toads Place in New Haven, CT, Syracuse, Northampton and Lowell, MA before closing out the tour in the 'Big Apple' at the Nokia Theatre.

Visit our Tour Dates Page for complete details.

From A City Near You Tour

DSO is celebrating our return to the West Coast by recreating shows From a City Near You. Each night Dark Star will choose a Grateful Dead show from a city close to that venue and will recreate that show in its entirety. This will be the perfect time to gather your tour buddies and relive the experience or for you to see that show for the first time that you have only heard stories about.

The tour kicks off in the "Golden State" with 2 nights in good ole San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. From there we head up to Sacramento then over to the banks of Lake Tahoe for a stop at the Crystal Bay Club Casino before returning to Cali for shows in Anaheim and LA before a Saturday night stop in 'Sin City' and a Sunday/Monday run at the Belly Up Tavern in Solona Beach. The last week of tour brings us back to the Mile High City with stops in Tempe and Flagstaff AZ, Salt Lake City and the tour Closer at the Fillmore in Denver.

Visit our Tour Dates Page for complete details.

The Rex Foundation and DSO

In addition to continuing the Grateful Dead concert experience at our shows we are working with The Rex Foundation to continue their legacy of giving. We have recently created a donation module on our fanclub-ticketing page that allows you to make a donation to the Rex Foundation while purchasing tickets to our shows.

For our summer tour former Grateful Dead tie-dye artist Courtenay Pollock designed a backdrop for us. We are pleased to raffle this off with part of the proceeds benefiting the Rex Foundation. If you would like to bid on this one of a kind tie-dye design on 4 10' x 10' panels, please send your bid and contact info to: brett@darkstarorchestra.net.

August 9, 2010 marks the 15 year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia's death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit the Rex Foundation. The album includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident, and Keller & The Keels. Other artists in the order they appear on the album are: Railroad Earth, The Black Crowes, Moonalice, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Waybacks, Widespread Panic, Hot Buttered Rum, and Steve Kimock Crazy Engine. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation.
