Rebirth Brass Band at Fox Theatre | 07.22.11

Z2 Entertainment is proud to present Rebirth Brass Band at the Fox Theatre on Friday, July 22nd. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 17th at 10:00am.

Hailed by the New York Times as “a New Orleans institution,” the Rebirth Brass Band have been at the forefront of the brass band revival that they helped kick off almost 30 years ago. Formed by the Frazier brothers, Phil and Keith, along with Basin Street labelmate Kermit Ruffins in 1983, The Rebirth Brass band has gone from playing on corners in the French Quarter to selling out concert halls across the world and appearing in David Simon’s HBO hit “Tremé.”

It’s been a long road, but The Rebirth Brass Band has become one of the most beloved brass bands in New Orleans and around the world.

Since their founding, they’ve developed a signature brand of heavy funk that they expand upon on their latest effort, Rebirth of New Orleans. Opener “Exactly Like You” starts the album off with a rollicking, Mardi Gras stomp. “The Dilemma” and “Do It Again” find the group locking in to a down-tempo, Latin-influenced grooves, anchored by Phil Frazier’s tuba. And “Shrimp and Gumbo” and Feelin’ Fine” find the band effortlessly perfecting the New Orleans-style brass lines that put the city on the map.

Rebirth Brass Band were featured in the opening scene of David Simon’s hit HBO show “Tremé” as well as on the GRAMMY® nominated soundtrack. No band exemplifies the essence and soul of New Orleans like Rebirth Brass Band.

Delta Spirit Announce US Winter Tour

Let’s start here with a short list of the things that we lose along the way. It seems that the men of Long Beach, Calif., who make up Delta Spirit and who have written and recorded the 11 songs that comprise History From Below, would like this little process. It would make sense to them, this brief focus on what’s gone missing, on what’s been loved and remembered.

It’s not about dwelling on the losses, but recognizing how the losses make all that remains so much more meaningful. It shapes us more than we know – rounding off and enhancing the joys that are still around, that are yet to be made. But we do lose, sometimes without gain, just pain and heartache. So, we lose, in no particular order – chronologically or as importance goes – the following, in varying degrees: our youth, our safety, our comfort, our spirit, our innocence, our grandmothers, our grandfathers, our curiosity, our love, another of our loves, still another of our loves, our wives, our mothers, our fathers, our sight, our hearing, our husbands, our daughters, our drive, our sons, our pets, our time, our hair, our reflexes, our spryness, our brightness, our shine, our guts and we’re just getting started.

We lose nearly everything before we’re done, before we’ve been finished off or written to a stop. We’re wrecked to the point that we need saints and saviors because there’s no doing it on our own. There’s no human being that can get us through these ruts. It must be out of body. It must be something other, something that breathes new breath and something that runs interference with the losses, something that softens them.

Delta Spirit makes music that softens our losses, sure, but it’s a band that makes music to soften their own losses, whatever those may be (see above for a good start). It finds a pleasing heat in a fever and it finds a comfort in a chill, knowing that they will become the other with a long enough wait. They find “churches” wherever they travel and they find those willing to embrace with them in a pageant of the losses, making them feel as if they were three parts sweetness and one part regret. The losses make them realize that so much of our histories come from our hardships, whether we like it or not, and it’s decisive. We can’t help but feel absolutely included and vulnerable when, on “Bushwick Blues,” lead singer Matt Vazquez sings, “My love is strong, but my heart is weak,” with a drawn-out pause, before finishing with the words, “after all.”

Sweet Apple Makes Grand Debut At SXSW

More than 2,000 bands played South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. But how many can say they played AND practiced for the first time ever -- in public?
Sweet Apple, which features members of Dinosaur Jr., Cobra Verde and Witch, played six shows at SXSW. The band, which features members spread out over Vermont, Massachusetts and Ohio, received raves -- even if it had never practiced before.
"We all live far apart and me and J (Mascis) were in Australia and Singapore," says bassist Dave Sweetapple. "So we never had a chance to practice -- we barely even made it to our first show."
The Austin Chronicle lauded Sweet Apple’s first official show at Roky Erickson’s Psychedelic Ice Cream Social: "A first outing for J Mascis' new bruising Detroit-rock style outfit Sweet Apple was as immediate and memorable as the free ice cream."
The band premiered songs from its forthcoming album, Love and Desperation, out April 20 on New York-based Tee Pee Records. Sweet Apple also drew raves from spinner.com: "Sweet Apple may be new, but based on the supergroup's first batch of super-catchy concoctions, they should stick around for a long while yet."
Sweet Apple almost didn’t make it to its show at Austin’s legendary Waterloo Records, though.
"We were running late from one show to another and couldn’t find a parking spot," says singer John Petkovic. "So J suggested we park in the Whole Foods across the street."
"I have a Whole Foods gold card, I must’ve spent $10,000 in that place last year," says Mascis. "Isn’t that worth a parking spot?"
A security guard wasn’t swayed. The band was told that parking spaces were reserved for customers only, not bands playing SXSW.
"So J suggested we go shopping," says Sweetapple. "He could spend all day in that place."
They did, with Mascis, Sweetapple and Tim Parnin carrying their guitars around the store.
"People kept asking us if we were performing a Whole Foods showcase," says Sweetapple. "But we couldn’t find the stage."
