New era of NRBQ and new CD ushered in by Terry Adams

Terry Adams, visionary, driving force, and “untamed genius of the keyboards” for the great American band NRBQ since its inception more than 40 years ago, resumes his life’s work with the release of a new studio album, Keep This Love Goin’ by NRBQ, due out July 19, 2011. Recorded with the band he formed in 2007 — Scott Ligon on guitar and vocals, Pete Donnelly on bass and vocals, and Conrad Choucroun on drums, formerly known as The Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet — Keep This Love Goin’ features 12 unforgettable songs, from the opener “Boozoo and Leona,” inspired by Adams’ relationship with the great zydeco musician Boozoo Chavis and his wife (Adams produced three albums for and performed with Chavis), to the instrumental closer “Red’s Piano,” a tune written by Piano Red and recorded in one take in that unmistakable NRBQ style. Adams learned the song from Red himself, when the Atlanta legend visited him at his upstate New York home in the 1970s.

In between is the unique Q mix of rock, pop and jazz, and of course no album of theirs would be complete without a classic Adams twist — here, an adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor,” done as a country tune called “In Every Dream.” Original compositions from Adams, Ligon, and Donnelly, written separately and together, and stellar playing throughout make for a true band effort. Former NRBQ bandmate Tom Ardolino provided the front cover art (and sits in on drums on two tracks).

“I found musicians who not only understand NRBQ’s past and traditions but who are open to future impossibilities,” says Adams. “It’s important that their reason for being musicians in the first place is real.”

Chicago’s Scott Ligon is on guitar and vocals. The multi-instrumentalist is, says the Nashville Scene, “an unqualified badass — he echoes Adams’ gift for balancing melody with dissonance.” Philadelphia-based Pete Donnelly, also a member of the Figgs, handles bass and vocals. And from Austin comes drummer Conrad Choucroun, who has played with numerous Texas bands and musicians (Bob Schneider, Kelly Willis, the Damnations, among others).

Adams announced in March 2011 the return of the NRBQ name along with the release of the new album. In the years since 2004, when the most recent Q line-up last appeared regularly onstage, Adams has been steadily rebuilding his health after a cancer diagnosis, and rebuilding the band after the other members decided to form their own band (Joey and Johnny Spampinato) or retire from the road (Tom Ardolino).

Why did he initially call his band the Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet in 2007 instead of NRBQ?

“I didn’t want to call the band NRBQ right away,” says Adams “because I didn’t want Scott, Pete, and Conrad subjected to unfair comparisons. It was clear in the spring of 2009 that we had it onstage, but I wanted to wait until we had more road experience and a new studio album with new songs that we wrote and recorded together. You can hear it on Keep This Love Goin’. The time is right.”

“I’m finally free to let go and move NRBQ forward. That’s what I’ve been doing since I was 18. With all due respect to the past, NRBQ is a living, breathing, ongoing sound. I never intended it to ever become a trip down memory lane.”

The first weekend of April found the band onstage for their first live shows, now billed as “the New NRBQ.”  Said the Albany Times-Union, “ . . . the current incarnation lived up to the legacy. They reclaimed not only the vast NRBQ catalog of songs and loose-as-a-goose sound, but also the band’s wildly unpredictable spirit on stage . . . their willingness to step way out on a limb has always been one of NRBQ’s most endearing qualities, and in the contemporary world of pre-packaged, cookie-cutter pop stars, it’s sure great to have them back.” The Schenectady Gazette added, “the re-branded NRBQ has developed an impressive depth of mutual intuition so that even odd detours took on unanimous glee Sunday. They felt so good and they made everyone feel good too.”

Zoë Keating is a one-woman orchestra. She uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. Increasingly considered a role model for DIY artists, Zoë's self-released albums have sold over 35,000 copies and she has amassed an incredible 1.3 million Twitter followers. Born in Canada and classically trained from the age of eight, Zoë spent her 20's dabbling in computer software while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Inevitably, she combined the two and developed her now signature style while improvising for late night crowds at her San Francisco warehouse. She makes an effort to reach audiences wherever they are and has performed on National Public Radio, television, webcasts, outdoors in the Nevada desert, in churches, concert halls, universities, museums, technology conferences, executive brainstorming sessions, house concerts, bars and rock clubs across North America and Europe.

Panther Style "¡Emergencia!" + June 11th Chicago Record Release Show!

May 31, 2011 brings the highly anticipated debut release from Chicago rock band, Panther Style. The "¡Emergencia!" LP will be available on 180 gram vinyl, digital and CD formats, all including a cover of "Blind Eyes Open" by The Posies.

This project of heavy tasty pop was started by Chicago rock veterans Jeanne McClure, Al Rodis, Dan Lutger, & Melissa Koehl (Mary Tyler Morphine, Siderunners, Dyslexic Apaches, Reptoids) out of a mutual desire to make some beautifully catchy songs that rocked. Drawing influences from The Posies, Big Star, New Order, and U2, along with the seductive feel of in-your- face screaming tube amps and chest pounding bass from The Cult, Fugazi and Failure, their sound brings a refreshing blend of sweet melodies and thick distorted guitars all held together with an air-tight driving rhythm.

"¡Emergencia!" was recorded at B-Side Audio in Chicago with Neal Ostrovsky on a 16-track analog tape machine to capture the warm tones and genuine feel of the band's live sound. All of the music was recorded live with everyone in the same room. It was mastered with Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. "Blind Eyes Open" was also released on the "Beautiful Escape" Posies cover compilation, by Burning Sky Records.

Soon after the formation of Panther Style, Dan and Melissa got hitched. Soon afterwards Dan and Jeanne jumped in to complete the rhythm section of Melissa's other established project, Reptoids. They brought a commanding presence to match Reptoids progression to a heavier sound and will be releasing the "Invasion" EP in the Summer of 2011.

Pepper Rabbit Announce New LP + Tour

Since Pepper Rabbit's debut album Beauregard was released last fall, the band has been touring nonstop, with the likes of Passion Pit, Freelance Whales, Miniature Tigers, and Ra Ra Riot.  The duo made up of Xander Singh and Luc Laurent, is now pleased to announce the release of their new album this summer along with upcoming tour dates with Givers.
On tour, Pepper Rabbit will continue to showcase stand out tracks from Beauregard, like “Older Brother”, as well as tracks from their new sophomore album.

Red Velvet Snow Ball is to be released on August 9th, 2011 on Kanine Records. The Los Angeles duo continues to be inspired by the band’s birthplace, New Orleans.  This album highlights the band’s ability to incorporate 11 instruments into their songs and include influences that span generations, from Portishead to David Bowie and Supertramp to Jamie Lidell to create their own brand of psychedelic pop music.

They Might Be Giants new album, Join Us, is the recording that their fans have been waiting 20 years for! They Might Be Giants unlikely success story started nearly three decades ago with their Dial-A-Song service. THE DEAD KENNY Gs To Tour With PRIMUS

Straight from a three week tour with Garage A Trois, saxophonist Skerik and percussionist/vibraphonist Mike Dillon rejoin bassist Brad Houser in their other primary band, The Dead Kenny Gs, for ten dates supporting Primus in the Southeast at the end of May. The trio will also headline a handful of its own shows during the run. The Dead Kenny Gs are touring behind their critically-acclaimed new album, Operation Long Leash, out now on Royal Potato Family.

Here We Go Magic Premiere New Single "Song In Three"

Here We Go Magic have released The January EP on Secretly Canadian this week with some reviews hailing it their best effort to date.

The second single "Song In Three" is available for download via Pitchfork and you can hear the entire EP streaming on Spinner right now.

The EP's six tracks complete the songwriting cycle that Here We Go Magic began in an upstate New York farm house upon the commencement of their critically-acclaimed sophomore LP Pigeons (2010, Secretly Canadian). The band's signature mix of swirling guitars, krautrock grooves, pulsing synths, and hushed chants provide a foundation for these otherworldly songs.

"Hands in the Sky" (download link below) is a ghostly number that showcases vocalist Luke Temple's lyrical pedigree, his words pushed forward in lockstep with a band heaven-bent on window dressing your headspace like a cosmos for the 20 minutes they've got your attention. At the center of the EP lies what Here We Go Magic does best, a dichotomy between eerie folk sounds and driving art rock. The jangly back-and-forth between the guitars of Michael Bloch and Temple form the backbone to "Song In Three" (download link below), the yin to Pigeons standout "Collector"'s yang. Cyclical in its instrumentation and lyrics, the spooky lullaby "Hollywood" climaxes with a mantra that wouldn't have been out of place on the band's 2009 self-titled release.

The January EP was produced by Jen Turner and recorded live to analog tape in a band-built living room studio.

Here We Go Magic are currently on tour with Aroara and will soon be joined by Cavemen for the remainder of the dates.

STS9 @ Hangout Festival 2011

STS9 kicks off a summer of massive touring, performing at a dozen festivals, including Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores Alabama, amphitheatres and more in support of their upcoming summer EP release on 1320 Records.

Since forming in Atlanta over a decade ago, instrumental electronic rock band STS9 has experienced a meteoric rise to the forefront of the electronic-rock music scene. Recently ranked #25 among Pollstar’s list of top-grossing touring acts for Summer 2010, STS9 averaged more than 4,200 tickets sold per city on a 25 city tour that boasted opening acts such as Ghostland Observatory, Thievery Corporation and Big Boi of Outkast. The band’s tour culminated with two sold out performances at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, with 18,000 fans on-hand to experience the audio-visual force that is STS9.

STS9 truly does it all; from headlining stages at festivals such as Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza and Electric Daisy Carnival, to selling out shows around the country in opera houses and amphitheatres alike, to performing with Jay-Z in arenas, to running their own record label, 1320 Records, to using their voice as a platform for change and raising significant amounts of money towards funding for their activism efforts (including $150,000 this past year to The Make it Right Foundation, paving the way to rebuild a house in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans). Ursa Minor Announces New Release & Show

Fronted and founded by New York singer/writer Michelle Casillas, Ursa Minor has become a mainstay in NYC’s indie rock scene. The band delivers a timeless mix of vocal driven pop-rock with a primal rhythmic undercurrent; sharp and urban, broad and free.
Ursa Minor’s debut LP Silent Moving Picture was released by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, on Smells Like Records. It was a deep and darker picture, slow bumps in the night and big spaces, featuring Casillas’ swampy electric piano and shuddering vocals. Ursa Minor is a band of improvisers, grown from downtown roots. Over many years of live performances and writing, they have pursued their artistic bent without compromise, and coincidentally become a source of naturally catching melodies and themes of a broader life.
From Beaconpass: “This Spring will see the arrival of Ursa Minor’s follow up, SHOWFACE.  The sound is often bigger, louder, more pugnacious: this is the sound of a band playing whatever turns them on. Live, Ursa Minor has been known to take the Violent Femmes' sweet ballad "Please Do Not Go" and turn it into a smoldering reggae slow jam, somewhere between Blondie's version of "The Tide is High" and Patti Smith's "Birdland."  Singer Michelle Casillas and her band can wring every drop of feeling out of a song, whether it's loud or lowdown, sweet or seething.” Many of their peers, some of New York’s most celebrated innovators, are often spotted at their shows, including Norah Jones, Marc Ribot, Joan As Police Woman, and Bill Frisell.

Bass whiz Rob Jost (Imogen Heap, Bjork) and NY heavy hitter Robert DiPietro (Norah Jones, Josh Rouse) equally create the sound, contribute songs of great depth and strength, and sing harmony. Special guests include Chris Brown (Joan As Police Woman, Barenaked Ladies, Abrams Brothers) on organ, and Jim Campilongo (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) and Teddy Kumpel (Rickie Lee Jones) on guitars.

Get Familiar with The New Familiars

Justin Fedor, Josh Daniel, Daniel Flynn, and Patrick Maholland all grew up playing music in some form or fashion and together make up The New Familiars. Together they’ve created a crew of thick-skinned, rowdy, determined musicians and songwriters. Multi-instrumentalist talents of Justin and Josh keeps the ever evolving sound. Willie Nelson, The Band, My Morning Jacket, and Otis Redding are named as a few of their heroes. They’ve shared the stage opening or closing shows with Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers), Levon Helm (The Band), Del McCoury, Emmitt-Nershi Band, and the Infamous Stringdusters. They’re also happy to be in their fifth year in the festival circuit.

“It’s American rock and roll” they’ll tell you. As much as they love bluegrass, rock and roll, and country, they skirt along the edge of all three. Blossoming out of a music scene that’s birthed loads of bands that blur and bend genre lines, The New Familiars happily sit in that place. Regardless, they’ll keep you on your feet, and that’s the important part right?

Their album Between the Moon & The Morning Light is a milestone for their career, which brought band member changes, and united the members that remained. Songs about love, luck, traveling the road, and finding one’s place in the world are what will be heard on Between the Moon & The Morning Light.
