LivePhish Limited Released Today

On Sunday June 27, 2010, Phish played their sixth headline show (since 1998) at Merriweather Post Pavilion and the second show of a two-night stand to a hot, sticky summer crowd.  Merriweather Post is a wooden-roofed music amphitheater designed by Frank Gehry with excellent acoustics and a capacity of about 19,000.  The band opened set one with "Walfredo" which includes lyrics about Phish's first visit to the venue opening for Santana in 1992.  This rarity, performed only a half dozen times and for the first time in a decade, began a string of breakouts.  The number two spot featured Bob Marley's "Mellow Mood" (played for the first time since 2003’s IT festival), "Divided Sky" and 2010's first "Tela".  A couple more covers, Clifton Chenier's Bayou swinging "My Soul" and Norman Blake's "Ginseng Sullivan", were clustered mid-set along with "Sample In A Jar."  Set one wrapped up with "Brian And Robert" - bookended by Phish classics "Bathtub Gin" and "Run Like An Antelope", the latter of which contained teases of "Brian And Robert."  Set two was a seamless affair rooted in the show's theme song, "Saw It Again" (also played at Merriweather for the first time since IT).  This playful set hinged on exploratory playing and transitions like "Meatstick" > "Saw It Again" > "Piper" > "Ghost" which, like the rest of the set included deft teases of "Saw It Again".  Phish sealed the fate of this uncommon set by weaving their debut of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" back into "Saw It Again".  The remainder of the show: "Contact", "You Enjoy Myself" (with teases of "Jumpin' Jack Flash") and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" also included multiple nods to "Saw it Again" among its sonic treasures.

On Saturday July 3, 2010, Phish returned to the Atlanta area for the first time since 2003 to begin the final two-night stand of Leg 1 of their summer tour.  Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park is a general-admission multi-purpose amphitheater with a capacity of about 12,000.  Phish had played this exact date in Atlanta eleven years ago in 1999.  The band kicked off the show with "Character Zero" and the only "Destiny Unbound" of Leg 1, followed by "Rift".  A request from the audience earned a trip to Gamehendge for "McGrupp And The Watchful Hosemasters" before a concentrated "Bathtub Gin" and the year's first "Mountains In The Mist".  The combination of "NICU" > "Gumbo" > "My Sweet One" spotlighted Page (aka "Leon") and Fish, who penned the latter two songs.  Set one concluded with "Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan",  "Strange Design”, the only "Sanity" of summer and "Run Like An Antelope" to close the set.  Set two began with an opening sequence of the The Velvet Underground's "Rock And Roll" > "Prince Caspian” (with a jam that entered "Dave's Energy Guide" territory) > "Tweezer" > "Slave To The Traffic Light".  This sublime Tweezer/Slave combination was featured on LiveBait Vol. 02.  Set two continued with "Bouncing Around The Room" > "Possum" and "Backwards Down The Number Line" > "Harry Hood" > "Loving Cup".  The Encore, "Sleeping Monkey" > "Tweezer Reprise", capped a great first performance at Alpharetta.

On Sunday July 4, 2010, Phish celebrated their second Independence Day in the Atlanta area (they played Lakewood Amphitheatre July 3 and 4, 1999).  The second show of a two-night stand and the last show of Summer Leg 1 began appropriately with an A capella performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by a return to Gamehendge for "Punch You In The Eye" > "Colonel Forbin's Ascent" > "Fly Famous Mockingbird"(narration-free except for Trey pointing out the Mockingbird).  Next came some animal songs in the form of "Camel Walk" and "Ocelot" before a three-song combination of "Heavy Things" > "My Friend, My Friend" > "Lawn Boy" after which the rowdy crowd began to chant "USA, USA."  Set one concluded with "David Bowie" and a fiery "Gotta Jibboo".  After more patriotic chanting by the crowd, Phish kicked off a mostly non-stop set two with "Down With Disease" > "Piper" > "Ghost" > "Waste" > "Julius".  "Mike's Song" > "Tela" was next and was the first and only time in nearly fifteen years that these two songs were paired this way.  After an Independence Day greeting from Trey, the band dropped into the year's only performance of "Harpua".  Trey used his holiday "Harpua" narration to educate Atlanteans and visitors alike about "the history of our country as we know it", pointing out that both the real and alternative history books in schools are full of lies.  Instead, he explained, the nation's true history is to be found within Phish's music.  This rap led perfectly into the band's first and only performance of Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name", sung by Fish with all the spirit of the holiday.  A burst of energy from the crowd acknowledged the message was received.  "Killing in The Name" returned to "Harpua" > "Weekapaug Groove", capping this unique Mike's Groove.  The instrumental "First Tube" filled the Encore slot, closing Leg 1.

Blottopia 2010

“There is no decoder ring or secret handshakes required.”  -Mike Bloger

Blottopia is the Midwest local band festival of longtime loyalists.  The heartland paints a portrait of the Fox River, fine accommodations, and family reunions for all ages.  This year being the 11th annual, boasts the biggest Blottopia ever.  While they did not release official attendance numbers, estimates range from 1500 to 2000 people with weekend passes.

The family reunion spills from onstage to the dance floor made of some of the softest grass available.  The lush Fox River valley provides a forgiving floor inside Vasa Park, otherwise known as Scandinavian Park.  The quaint camping ground comes complete with empty barns, very nice restrooms, playgrounds, and 25 acres of open space and oak trees’ shade.  The line-up this year included: Hoss, Robert James & the Cough, Green Sugar, Little Chris, Wyatt, Barefoot Fred, Snuckafoo, Ekoostic Hookah, and of course the notorious Mr. Blotto.

The Saturday lineup was sounding like Widespread Panic, a little like Phish, some southern rock, orchestral philharmonic white striped fun.  Little Chris can’t be more than 15 years old and he wailed out some bass plucking finger strumming guitar.  His version of “circles” was in the stylings of Keller Williams.  I look forward to seeing him progress.  After the live music ended Saturday night, Little Chris set up shop to keep on playing acoustic with a drum circle.  He’s got a lot of material waiting to be transformed.

Green Sugar was pure rock and roll.  Just short of an hour long set, they started and finished with a drummer that was high energy the entire time.  Does Pat, the drummer for Green Sugar consume nothing but pure sugar?  He’s a live wire that connected with the audience bolstering the back row to the front man that clearly feels comfortable on stage.

Wholesome traditional Ekoostic Hookah took the stage just before the big Blotto show commenced.  It was a different әkoostic Hookah from what I had seen in the past, no dreadlocks, no percussion guy smiling so hard I thought his face would cramp afterwards, but still a solid set.  The players may have changed, but the game is still the same for this Midwest best longtime playing band.

Vitamins, Scotch, & Cigarettes (a Capella vocal trio)

Friday night only Blotto took the stage for 2 full sets and a fantastic Echoes (Pink Floyd) encore.  Saturday night began about 6:30 pm and raged on until midnight when it was all said and done.  The extensive versatility of this band was clearly demonstrated with guest spots from Meddle Bloger doing spoken word in the second set to the infamous 3rd set.  Blottopia’s tradition is do an entire album as the 3rd and final set.  This year was a spot-on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club BandPaul Bolger showcased his sitar skills and the crowd returned the love exponentially.  Who doesn’t love the Beatles?

In response to the crowd’s demands for more, Mr. Blotto couldn’t deny.  They have a strict noise policy they respect inside Scandinavian Park, but still managed to bend the rules for one more tune.  They did a cappella trio entitled, Vitamins, Scotch and Cigarettes. When asked about this little ditty, bassist Mike Bolger responded, “Vitamins, Scotch, and Cigarettes is an a cappella thing that Paul, Dave Allen (our former keyboard player-who is an avid Beatle Freak who we brought back for Saturday only) and I came up with a while ago. It's an original based on our drummer Alan's statement on the bus one day when asked if he needed to eat. He said that he didn't need food. Just vitamins. And scotch. And cigarettes.  We used to encore with it from time to time, but haven't done it recently.  It seemed appropriate to close the weekend with it.”

While considering how to describe this band - Mr. Blotto - words escape me.  It’s that band that everyone knows.  It’s that band that everyone from just about a 200 miles radius from Chicagoland area has a story about.  They have had all sorts of collaborations and musical masterpieces from the past 20 years and yet, are virtually unknown on the national scene.  Mr. Blotto is their own band. They put on their own UNsponsored music fests 3 times a year, Blottopia, Blottumnal Equinox Fest in the fall, and Hotel Blotto in the winter.  They take over an entire hotel for a weekend.  They associate with the “Industry of Cool” without falling down the black hole.  Is that what makes Blottopia so special?  The secret is that there is no secret, just a deceivingly good time filled with the usual suspects and the family you have come to count on. I will be back again to investigate further.

Bob Log III Announces US Summer Tour

Bob Log III is a One Man Band Slide Guitar Party.

A perverse product of the Arizona desert, Bob Log III has been diligently travelling the globe since 1996, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dexterous limbs and digits, this super star sonic showman has to be seen to be believed.

Clad in his cannonball man, extra tight jumpsuit and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum, stomping his homemade foot cymbal and playing slide on an old archtop guitar.

His endless pursuit for musical mayhem and a downright party has seen his unique talents utilised for children’s birthday parties, obscure beer barns, mammoth music festivals and everything in between.

Yet beyond these mesmerizing visuals, lies the true reason for Bob Log’s international, cult status and superhero adoration. It is quite simply the guitar playing - finger picked lightning, sliding up and down, stopping when it wants to, then starting again when it feels like it, all in a way that makes people move uncontrollably, smile and reel.

The upcoming release of his long awaited new album, MY SH*T IS PERFECT, begins the onset of another slew of adventures. Geography be damned, Bob Log III intends to take these songs and his unique slide guitar party to the good people of the world. There is no town too remote, there never has been.

But don’t take his word for it, let the guitar speak for itself.

Bob Log III RUMORS

Yes, we have all heard the rumors...

He has a monkey paw instead of a hand, girls like to sit on his knees and bounce while he plays, occasionally various people from the crowd jump onstage and put their boob in his drink, he rides in an inflatable dinghy over an ocean of fans…

These whispers are all best explained in the following article, which has been translated from its original publication in French, using the Transitron Whizgig 4000-

“Msr. Bob Log appears, and so joy! It is of many nights and one thousand ladies, the guitar defeats us to dance. On the top, a crown. Never has this in time! Maybe not future. Only the now, her glowing hand, can be seen.  Thunder of foot escapes the stage, chasing wild tempo with sound animal.  We, the entourage, are not free.  Arrested! But not of shame.  Many times more we ask it. Encore, Captain , Encore!”

And so you see, it is all true.

All Bob Log asks is that you do the math. And if you do it (correctly) you will find that with the single exception of Hasil Adkins, Bob Log has out guitared, out drummed, out sweated, out driven, out boated, out bounced, out custom agented, out inspired all other one man bands. Numbers never lie. Bob Log III. MY SH*T IS PERFECT.
