Europe '72 | The Wait is Almost Over!

The production stage is coming to end for everyone working on the release...which means Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is about to truly begin for all of you! Dead.net is proud to announce the final disc tally is a whopping 73! Pressing is underway and they're on target to meet their expected ship date. As a special project-ending taste of the box set, they've got this tremendous version of "The Other One" from 4/11/72 in Newcastle, selected by David Lemieux. He considers this to be one of the finest, most dynamic, most powerful jams of the entire tour, high praise for a tour that included mind-blowing and mind-bending jams virtually every night of the tour.

Dead.net is now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 72 CDs (our last count said over 60 but much to our surprise, the final count is 72) and 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead. You can purchase it now by clicking here.

Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata Resurrects Lost "Sound of Music"

Fans of the Broadway version of "The Sound of Music" will notice an old favorite on Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata's (BRO) 'The Hills Are Alive' (Canal Records, 3/8). That's because BRO has included "No Way To Stop It," a song that was previously only used in the musical's Broadway production, on the Brooklyn collaborative's bold re-imagining of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein's score.  Soulful, pointed and tightly orchestrated, "No Way To Stop It" begins slowly and softly before building to an inspirational ballad, giving Carolyn Leonhart room to stretch her crystalline vocals across founder Peter Kiesewalter’s warmly-arranged musical canvas.

One listen to the alternative take explains why the team at the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization has granted BRO unprecedented artistic license, citing their "affection, skill and superb musicianship."

Ellie Goulding To Release Special Version Of "Lights"

Already a success in her native England, 24 year-old UK singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding will release a special US full length of LIGHTS March 8th on Cherrytree/ Interscope Records. The US version will include three songs (“Lights,” “Animal,” and “Your Song”) not available on the original UK version. Produced by Starsmith, Goulding’s full length release LIGHTS shot to #1 on the UK chart in March 2010. This past December “Your Song” hit #2 on the charts and #1 on the iTunes Chart and the video has received over 6 million views. “Starry Eyed” has already received over 12.5 million views on YouTube.
This past September, Ellie made her maiden voyage to the US in support of her EP, AN INTRODUCTION TO ELLIE GOULDING.  She performed in New York and Los Angeles to rave reviews. The New Yorker called Ellie “the future of music” and the Los Angeles Times raved, “her set seemed to cement her pop bona fides.” “She can reel off some powerful drum and guitar chops and her voice is a serious and sure instrument in person.”
Ellie has received numerous accolades from her motherland in the form of The Critics Choice Award at the 2010 Brit Awards and topped the BBC sound of 2010 poll. Goulding’s debut CD has garnered much critical praise. NME calls Lights, “never less than stunning…it marks the emergence of a smart, sincere and talented new pop star,” and Q declares, “There is undeniable greatness afoot here.”
Described as “electro-folk-acoustic-pop,” Ellie’s songs mix heartfelt emotion with other-worldly atmospherics, spinning electronica into dreamy warmth.

Marty Nelson of the original Manhattan Transfer Returns to Performing

It has been more than thirty years since Marty Nelson has performed live.  He returned to the stage last month at Chico’s House of Jazz in Asbury Park, NJ.  His show “A Tribute to Sinatra, plus . . .?” is true to its name. Marty uses his favorite Sinatra hits as the core of his show, but adds many personal touches.

Marty explains how he started as a teenager with the original Manhattan Transfer (Capitol Records) and then went on to produce for Lifesong Records, and eventually became a New York City freelance studio singer.  He performed and recorded with artists that ranged from Frank Sinatra to The Village People to Leonard Bernstein.  He also sang on more than 1,000 national radio and TV commercials – and this is where the “plus . . .” of his show’s title comes into play. Marty was often asked to do solos on commercials that called for a Sinatra “sound,” and he not only gives the audience tasteful renditions of many classic pop/jazz songs, but he also sings some of his better known commercials.  (The audience really enjoyed hearing these memorable jingles.)

As the show develops, Marty reveals more of his creative side with original arrangements of “Black Magic” (based on the Billy Daniels hit) and a version of Minnie the Moocher that features an extended vocal scat where he takes the audience on an improvisational journey, touching on classic rock hits from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen and more.  He peppers the show with stories about his experiences in the music business and even does an interactive segment with the audience where he brings a person onstage and does an impromptu scat lesson.

His energy is infectious and his intimate soulful ballad renditions draw you in (especially a marvelous version of “Send in the Clowns” where Marty performs it almost entirely with only stand-up Bass accompaniment).

If you are looking for a Sinatra sound-alike lounge review, you won’t get it here.  But if you want an evening of great music with a touch of fun, you’ll really enjoy Marty Nelson’s show.

Blix Street Records To Release "Simply Eva" by Eva Cassidy

She left us way too soon, in November of 1996, but Eva Cassidy's voice has continued to resonate with fans around the world since the music she left behind began to be released two years after her passing from melanoma at the age of 33.On January 25, 2011, independent Blix Street Records will release SIMPLY EVA, a collection of 12 acoustic versions of songs with which she has been associated, all previously-unheard guitar and vocal only performances.

This "Eva only" collection showcases Cassidy's extraordinary voice and superb guitar work as well as her unusual arrangements of sometimes familiar material to create a new and different listening experience for even the most devoted fans of her music. Whether it's her spare interpretation of Christine McVie's "Songbird," (which was the title cut of the initial breakthrough 1998 compilation from the Cassidy canon), the bluesy stylings of "People Get Ready" or the folk versions of "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Wade In The Water," it's Cassidy's voice that is front and center, unadorned. The new version of Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" is extended to include three additional verses that did not appear on the previously released version.

In addition to including Eva's previously unreleased, re-defining version of "San Francisco Bay Blues," SIMPLY EVA is the first album to include the Blues Alley guitar/vocal performance of "Over The Rainbow" from the Rainbow video that triggered Eva Cassidy's rise to the top of the British Pop Charts in March, 2001. Recorded five years after the 1991 version heard on SONGBIRD (which country superstar Martina McBride recently cited among her favorite recordings on the ABC News Nightline "Playlist" feature, saying "I never get tired of it"), the included fully evolved version literally redefined this all-time number one popular song (according to a BBC radio poll). Other songs include "True Colors," "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," "Time After Time," "Autumn Leaves" and Eva's a cappella performance of "I Know You By Heart."

Blix Street President Bill Straw compiled the selections for SIMPLY EVA after initially searching the archives for a possible holiday track. "In doing so," he writes in the liner notes, "I literally heard Eva for the first time, again. That I was hearing the same songs in a different way actually added to my sense of re-discovery."

A special by-product of his quest was the discovery of a Cassidy rendition of "Silent Night," which has just been made available via iTunes and other digital outlets in time for the holiday season. Recorded in 1988, Eva's performance of the traditional Christmas classic is destined to become a holiday staple for years to come. It will be included on the iTunes digital download version of SIMPLY EVA as a bonus track when the album becomes available.

Born in Washington, DC, Eva Cassidy recorded and performed in the area for several years until her untimely death. She left behind a small, but impeccable body of recordings that have been meticulously curated and compiled by Blix Street Records with the support of her parents, Barbara and Hugh Cassidy.

In April, 1998, Blix Street posthumously released SONGBIRD, a collection chosen primarily from two other Cassidy albums, LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY and EVA BY HEART. It featured Eva's unqualified signature performance of "Over the Rainbow" as well as Sting's "Fields of Gold." Later that same year, Blix Street also released LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY and EVA BY HEART, the first national exposure for both albums, followed in May, 2000 by TIME AFTER TIME, a new compilation selected from her unreleased material.

But it was in 2001 that Eva Cassidy became an "overnight sensation" when the SONGBIRD compilation reached No.1 on the British charts. By the end of that year, the album had been certified triple-platinum in England (for sales of more than 900,000 sold) and gold in the U.S. (more than 500,000 units); the album, now six times platinum in England and platinum in the U.S., eventually hit No. 1 on Billboard's Internet Albums chart and topped the publication's Pop Catalog survey for 32 weeks. IMAGINE also hit No. 1 on the British charts in 2002 and commandeered the top slot on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. AMERICAN TUNE, another No. 1 in England in 2003, ultimately made it to No. 4 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. WONDERFUL WORLD, a compilation of tracks from all the previous albums other than SONGBIRD, came out in 2004. SOMEWHERE, a collection that included two songs co-written by Cassidy as well as impressive covers, was released in 2008.

SIMPLY EVA now joins this classic catalogue that has already sold more than eight million CDs around the world.

Will Hoge Releases "The Living Room Sessions"

Critically-acclaimed Nashville rocker Will Hoge is releasing an EP aptly titled THE LIVING ROOM SESSIONS on Ryko on Oct. 12 and will be joining Shinedown on tour throughout November and December.

The six-song acoustic EP was recorded in only two days in Hoge’s living room and features stripped-down versions of essential songs (“Long Gone,” “Favorite Waste of Time,” “Goodnight/Goodbye,” “Too Late Too Soon” and “Even If It Breaks Your Heart”) from his latest album, THE WRECKAGE, and the fan favorite, “All Night Long,” from Hoge’s 2003 album,  BLACKBIRD ON A LONELY WIRE.

“I like acoustic recordings that try to be different from the album versions,” says Hoge.  “We just got together and camped out at my house for a couple of days… it’s not a home studio, no real fancy set-up or multi-tracking.  The console was a laptop on a card table, and that same table also served simultaneously as the keyboard stand. There were no real overdubs or re-dos or pitch correct.  We just did it ‘til we liked it and let it be…not out of laziness, it just seemed to fit.”

Hoge, the relentless road warrior, kicked-off his headlining tour last weekend in Nashville, which will continue through October.  He’ll then join rockers Shinedown on their “Anything & Everything” tour kicking-off Nov. 4 in Tampa, Fla. and wrapping up in New Orleans, La. on Dec 9.  The tour spans over 25 major cities throughout the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast regions of the United States.  More dates will be announced shortly.

Greensky Bluegrass Performs with Grateful Dead Drummers, Announces NYE Run in Denver

As summer fades and autumn arrives, the music of Greensky Bluegrass is piquing new ears and peaking out. This past weekend at the Hoxeyville Festival in Northern Michigan, the band offered the crowd of thousands two surprise guests to close out their Saturday night show by inviting the Grateful Dead drumming duo of Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart on stage for a bluegrass-infused version of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider”. The set closing sit-in was filmed and can be viewed on YouTube here:

Additionally, Greensky Bluegrass announced today that the quintet will be ringing in the New Year in Denver, Colorado with two nights of raging bluegrass at Cervantes' Other Side December 30 and 31. Tickets for both shows will go on sale September 6 at www.cervatnesmasterpiece.com or www.greenskybluegrass.com with special hotel rates available for fans at the band’s website.

To celebrate the New Year’s Eve announcement and the special guest appearance of the Rhythm Devils over the weekend, the band wants to share a free download from their most recent double live CD All Access: Volume 1. For a limited time, an extended 13 minute version of the song “Train Junkie” is available for a free download here.

MMJ's Carl Broemel Shares Video Performances of Three Solo Songs

Leading up to the release of his solo album All Birds Say, which is out next week on August 31st (ATO Records), My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel has been steadily revealing performances of some of the tracks off the record.   You may have seen Broemel do a rendition of “Questions” over at MOG, creating an epic solo version of the track that builds to a thrillingly noisy climax.  He also played the earnest and whimsical “Enough,” which recently debuted at My Old Kentucky Blog. Lastly, his version of “Carried Away,” a contemplative and heartfelt ballad that My Morning Jacket recently performed, premiered at JamBase.  Please feel free to post and share all three videos!

As evident by these three clips, Broemel is a sophisticated songwriter  and an elegantly effortless performer.  He has the lyrical perspective of an individual who truly reflects and learns from his life’s experiences.  However, Broemel favors a Zen-like approach, keeping his philosophical musings from getting anywhere near being preachy.  Needless to say, MMJ fans who know him solely from the fiery riffs and guitar solos he performs with the band are going to see a whole other side of him.

Click HERE for photos of Carl, an mp3 off the album (which you are also welcome to post/share), and more info on him.
