Molly Sweeney: Gold Rings and Fur Pelts

One of the most compelling new voices to emerge from the Montreal music scene, singer-songwriter Molly Sweeney's debut album Gold Rings and Fur Pelts features nine songs that conjure up an elemental world of longing, passion, and poetry in a classic concept-album format. From a journey foiled by fate to a poignant French chanson of faithless love, these folk-infused torch songs explore the dark side of rapture, showcasing her sultry, dramatic vocals and enigmatic lyrics.
A regular on the Montreal circuit, Molly has shared the stage with a diverse slate of musicians including White Magic, Elfin Saddle, Josephine Foster, Scout Niblett, MV and EE, Simon Finn, Matana Roberts and Sally Seltmann, and performs with Sam Shalabi's Land of Kush both onstage and on their critically acclaimed 2009 release Against the Day and 2010 release Monogamy.

Greensky Bluegrass CD Release

The music that Greensky Bluegrass performs can best be described as a breath of fresh air, relaxing, invigorating and a welcomed change from the current climate.  The Kalamazoo, MI based quintet uses traditional bluegrass instruments – dobro, banjo, guitar, upright bass and mandolin – to create original songs that are unique, yet familiar and cover songs unconventional to their roots (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan).

The Midwestern boys had an incredible 2010, touring nationally, performing alongside Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead and featured at the Rockygrass Festival in Lyons, CO, on the main stage at the Grey Fox Festival in upstate New York and in front of an audience of thousands at the All Good Festival in West Virginia. Additionally, the quintet delighted campers at the All Good Festival by performing a surprise midnight to sunrise ‘Guerilla Grass’ jam session that was captured by CNN and featured here.

Greensky Bluegrass has quickly become one of the most exciting touring acts on the road today, performing their trademark sound nationwide at over 160 spirited shows a year. This energy is captured perfectly on their live double-CD releases, All Access: Volume One and Volume Two. All Access is a series of recordings of select shows from the road, Volume One was released and subsequently sold-out in 2010 and Volume Two was released later in that same year.  Each installment offers nearly 30 songs, originals and covers.

Since winning the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, Greensky has been touring constantly and all the hard work is certainly paying off. Recent highlights are too many to list, but include selling out venues in many parts of the country, sharing the stage with musical heroes, getting asked to play shows with the likes of Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth. Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin).

Check out Greensky Bluegrass at Sullivan Hall in NYC on February 10th.

We seek to provide that communal experience. Join in on the project, sing along, learn some history and contribute any way you can. The society is always accepting new, honorary members who are willing to delve deeper into the music, both intellectually and spiritually and physically.

Vincent Minor News & MP3!

Singer/songwriter Vincent Minor, will release his self-titled debut album, September 21 on Social Science Recordings. The album fuses indie pop with classic Tin Pan Alley tunesmithery and then lights the bonfire with colorful, often discordant orchestral arrangements. Unexpected passages of strutting brass, apocalyptic strings and malfunctioning kitchen appliances bring subtlety and life to Minor's stories of danger and heartbreak.

From the fuzzed out guitars and driving beat of “Late Night Show” with it’s tale of LSD in the desert and double-dutch with Morrissey to the gorgeous “Pin Drop Silence” with its escalating piano and strings that sonically recall Bowie’s epic “Rock’n’Roll Suicide”, the album never stops evolving, surprising and mesmerizing. Humor, an unusually wry and dark variety, is also pervasive, as evidenced in tunes like “Heavy Metal Lover” which tells the tale of someone who manipulates through drugging a lover's tea with arsenic rather than dealing a kosher break-up.

Vincent Minor assembled some amazing LA area talents to round out his grand vision including producer Tom Biller (Fiona Apple, Sean Lennon, Where the Wild Things Are), keyboardist Zac Rae (Annie Lennox, My Brightest Diamond), horn player Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe, Rachael Yamagata), and upright bassist Ed Maxwell. The result is a collection of wryly humorous and troubling tales carried by Minor's tuneful baritone and his orchestrally lush production.

To introduce this album to live audiences Vincent Minor will be embarking on a national tour this summer. He will spend a week in each city and assemble an entirely new band for each show. For an early listen, check out the “Late Night Show” MP3 premiered on the Advocate yesterday. You can download the MP3 here. We encourage you to post & share this MP3 & look out for one of the year’s most exciting debuts!
