Elephant Revival

The neo-acoustic transcendental folk quintet from Nederland Colorado, is touring in support of their new album, ‘Break in the Clouds’ released on Ruff Shod Records, an independent label created by Chad Stokes of State Radio. The album was released regionally on Nov. 22nd 2010 with a full national release scheduled for June 14th 2011. ‘Break In the Clouds was produced by David Tiller of Taarka. Their sophomore effort expands upon the group’s multi–genre musical approach, threading together dynamic instrumentation and a diverse rhythmic sound while exploring the depths of all five of the groups’ gifted songwriters. The album debuted at #2 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart, and was featured as a new and noteworthy independent release. “Break In the Clouds,” was also the top album sold in Colorado for four weeks in a row, and top radio spins for a Colorado artist in Colorado for the month of January 2011.

Steep Canyon Rangers

The past year has taken the Steep Canyon Rangers to new heights.  In March 2011, the band released its first collaborative record with Steve Martin, “Rare Bird Alert,” which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Chart and at #43 on the Billboard Top 200.  In 2010, the latest solo record from Steep Canyon Rangers, “Deep In The Shade,” remained in the Bluegrass Top 10 on Billboard for 18 weeks.  While headlining festivals like MerleFest and Bonnaroo alongside Steve Martin with Steep Canyon Rangers include “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Colbert Report” & “Austin City Limits.”

With smooth vocals, smart songwriting, ferocious instrumentals and jaw-dropping harmony, the Rangers are bringing Bluegrass to music lovers across the USA and around the world.  Steep Canyon Rangers are:  Mike Guggino (mandolin/vocals), Charles Humphrey III (bass/vocals), Woody Platt (guitar/lead vocals), Nicky Sanders (fiddle/vocals), and Graham Sharp (banjo/vocals)

String Cheese Incident releases Winter Carnival 2011

The String Cheese Incident announces the digital release of Winter Carnival 2011, a live, 21-track compilation of songs culled from the band’s recent Winter Carnival run at Colorado’s brand new 1STBANK Center. Available exclusively at iTunes beginning May 24, 2011, Winter Carnival 2011 catches all of the energy and excitement from this epic run of hometown shows.

Four years had gone by since the last "Winter Carnival", The String Cheese Incident's annual celebration of ski slopes, music, Mardi Gras, and the Winter/Spring Solstice. From humble beginnings in Boulder in 1999, through seven years at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium, the band's annual Winter Carnival run always offered up a chance to welcome SCI’s musical heroes, as well as a few emerging favorites, to share the stage. Guest highlights over the years are numerous, including Little Feat, Bruce Hornsby, Del McCoury Band, Warren Haynes, Los Lobos, The Funky Meters, Olatunji, Dr. John, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe - and the list goes on and on.

Picking back up the tradition, for Winter Carnival 2011 the band welcomed OTT, JD Crowe and the New South, and Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk to join them on stage at the celebration’s new home, the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado. A brand new venue just outside of the band's hometown of Boulder, The String Cheese Incident had played there only once before – hosting the now-legendary “Fourmile Canyon Revival” benefit concert. Now, it was time for SCI to lay down roots at this venue that would run deep. And indeed the 1STBANK Center proved to be a natural fit for this epic run of "Incidents."

Check out Grateful Web's review of the Fourmile Canyon Revival.

19th Annual Microbreweries For The Environment

KGNU and the Boulder Weekly proudly present the 19th annual Microbreweries for the Environment benefit on Friday, April 22 at The Boulder Theater.

Since 1993, the Microbreweries for the Environment benefit has raised over $120,000 for local environmental causes. The proceeds from this year's benefit will further the environmental efforts of four local non-profit organizations: CU Environmental Center, Flatirons Neighborhood Farm, The GrowHaus, and Sprout City Farms.

Nineteen Colorado microbreweries serve their best beers for only $2 each. Participating breweries include: Asher Brewing Co., Aspen Brewing Company, Avery Brewing, Boulder Beer Company, Breckenridge Brewery, Bristol Brewing Company, Crabtree Brewery, Dillon Dam Brewery, Great Divide Brewing Company, Fort Collins Brewery, Left Hand Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing Company, New Planet Beer, Odell Brewing Company, Oskar Blues Brewery, Pumphouse Brewery, Ska Brewing Company, Twisted Pine Brewing, Upslope Brewing Company.

The evening's entertainment features music by P.K.B. followed by two sets from Head for the Hills. These local bands’ innovative sounds are sure to harmonize well with Colorado's finest brews.

P.K.B. is Pete Kartsounes on guitar, Kevin Malone on bass, Ryan Sapp on drums, and Greg Schochet on guitar and mandolin, and Bill McKay on keys. P.K.B. combines electric and funk sounds with slamgrass undercurrents. Armed with an acoustic guitar, blazing skill, powerful voice, and relentless heart, Pete inspires and entertains on a quest to make a difference in people’s lives. P.K.B. will stretch boundaries and bend genres to create tasteful blends of original melodies and lyrics, captivate audiences and foster good times.

Head for the Hills, the acclaimed Colorado Bluegrass quartet, has been receiving nation-wide recognition in response to their refreshing take on acoustic music. Rooted in the tradition of bluegrass but described perhaps more accurately as progressive acoustic/modern roots, H4TH produces a vibrant mixture of homegrown compositions, traditional harmonies, and improvisation. In the live setting, H4TH effortlessly ventures into a myriad of musical styles and sonic landscapes that appeal to a boundless array of listeners.

The benefit is a zero-waste and carbon-neutral event. We encourage people to walk, bike, or bus to the event. Doors open and beer tasting starts at 8:00pm, and music will run to 1:00am. Admission costs $20 ($22 day of show) and includes a commemorative pint glass. Tickets are available at the Boulder Theater Box Office (303-786-7030 or www.bouldertheater.com). This event traditionally sells out in advance.
