The Motet @ Boulder Theater

KGNU & Colorado Daily present
THE MOTET
w/ Albino
Thursday, July 9
doors 8:00pm, show 8:30pm

Dual CD Release Party!

Founded by Dave Watts, The Motet has become one of the most recognized improv-dance bands touring today. Fusing Afrobeat, afrocuban-funk, jazz, and electronica, much of the distinctive character of The Motet's sound comes from having a diverse body of material created from a drummer's perspective.

The SF Music Award-winning Albino is a ten-piece Afrobeat ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Nigerian musical revolutionary Fela Kuti. Albino's high-energy grooves and explosive stage show thick with hypnotic percussion, a heavy horn section, African dance, outrageous costumes, and infectious group choreography have established the band as the West Coast's premier Afrobeat act.

The Seldom Scene @ Boulder Theater

The Seldom Scene are approaching 40 years of service as progressive pickers and beautiful harmonizers.

Since its inception in 1971, the Seldom Scene has thrived on playing bluegrass a little differently than everyone else. If other bands used a fiddler, the Seldom Scene used a Dobro; if others relied on old standards, the Seldom Scene played rock classics like J.J. Cale's "After Midnight." Through skilled musicianship and an urban approach to bluegrass, the Seldom Scene has become one of the most influential -- if not the most influential -- bluegrass band of their time.

Band du Jour @ Boulder Theater

Band du Jour, the Jam band sensation from the 90’s returns to Boulder with soulful vocals and high energy jams. Their original brand of soul n' roll made them an institution in the 90's in Boulder where they brought the funk to enraptured audiences time and time again. Now Band du Jour returns, with the soulful vocals and high energy jams that will keep the audience boogying all night long once again.

Band Du Jour's style was concocted from a wide array of influences including rock n' roll, New Orleans style funk, soul, R&B and reggae. Their unique and compelling original songs are complimented by their psychedelic jams. With five vocalists in the band supported by a rhythm section, two guitars, and a Hammond organ player/pianist, the band has an authentic rootsy sound. This year, the entire original line up will be performing, including the legendary Sherri Jackson whose raw vocal power and electrifying charisma light up the stage.

Members include Danny Brandt Schults, the founder of Band du Jour, Sherri Jackson, John Ohnmacht and Bill McKay.

Tower of Power @ Boulder Theater

For over 40 years, Tower of Power has been creating their own kind of soul music. Since 1968, Tower of Power has delivered their unique brand of music to their fans, appearing before sold out crowds as they tour the world each year. Tower’s sound can be hard to categorize, but the band's leader and founding member, Emilio Castillo, has labeled their sound as "Urban Soul Music."

2009 will see the release of the “Great American Soulbook”, the bands first studio disc in five years.  "Great American Soulbook" is a bit different then pervious albums.  This time the group played some old songs by lifelong favorites.  “In the old days,” says the group’s co-founder, saxophonist Stephen “Doc” Kupka, “the thought of doing other peoples’ songs would have been unthinkable, but this felt like a really good way to go - our take on classic great soul songs that we listened to on the way up.”

Larry Carlton @ Boulder Theater

KUVO presents: LARRY CARLTON w/ guests. Thursday, August 20. doors 7:00pm, show 8:00pm

Larry Carlton is an American jazz fusion, pop, rock, guitarist and singer, dividing his recording time between solo recordings and session appearances with various well-known bands.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, Carlton was a busy session musician in Los Angeles, making up to five hundred recordings a year, including albums by Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Quincy Jones,  the Partridge Family, and Charly García's Clics Modernos. His loopy, dazzling guitar work on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" from their 1976 LP The Royal Scam has been listed as the third best guitar solo on record by Rolling Stone Magazine. From 1971 to 1976 he played with the jazz-rock group The Crusaders. In 1977 he signed with Warner Bros. Records for a solo career.

Over his career, Carlton has won three Grammys for his performances and compositions, including the theme music for the hit television series, "Hill Street Blues" (1981).

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers @ Boulder Theater

Legendary rock and roll revolutionaries Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers (RCPM) bring their high-energy nationwide tour to Boulder Theater (2032 14th St.) with Railbenders on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 9:00 p.m.  Tickets ($21.50) for the 21+ show are on sale now and can be purchased at Boulder Theater and online by visiting here.

RCPM’s 2009 Tour has included stops at the acclaimed Tempe Music Festival April 3, The Pima County Fair in Tucson April 26 and will include the annual band-hosted celebration of life and music, Circus Mexicus in Rocky Point, Mexico, June 6.  With an intriguing array of unrivaled songs (laced with flavorful melodies, etched-in-your-brain hooks and inventive lyrics), RCPM injects a signature brand of high-energy showmanship into each of its live performances.  Fans of the band know there’s nothing quite like a live Peacemakers show.

Glow In The Dark, RCPM’s new live web-only release, captures the spirit and vigor of RCPM live.  The band once again loaded their guitars, drum sticks and amps onto the tour bus and traveled thousands of miles across North America in ‘08, delivering the kind of high energy rock show night after night that has become a Peacemakers' trademark. Music fans can experience the energy and excitement from one of the standout shows of the year with Glow In The Dark, which was recorded at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, New Jersey.  To commemorate this memorable performance, RCPM is raising one more round with fans to celebrate with the unconventional release of the new live album.

Beginning on February 2, fans were given a unique opportunity to not only hear the show, but to watch the band perform a different song, both from the RCPM and Refreshments catalogs, each week for a consecutive 14 weeks. Producer extraordinaire Clif Norrell, the man behind The Refreshments' classic Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy as well as RCPM's No More Beautiful World and Turbo Ocho, was also there with trumpet in hand to work his magic on and off the stage.

Similar to 2008’s Turbo Ocho VivaCast, a page has been set up on www.azpeacemakers.com where fans will find one new song from the show as well as the accompanying concert footage, each week through May 2009.  Each song and video will be streaming from the site to enjoy free of charge. As soon as a new song is posted on the site, it becomes available for purchase in RCPM’s digital download store. Fans can either buy a new song each week, or at the end of the 14 weeks, purchase the entire Glow In The Dark album at once. Glow In The Dark will not be released in standard CD form – only as a digital download available only through the RCPM website.

In March 2008, RCPM released the ambitious CD/DVD Turbo Ocho.  Featuring rock and roll in its purest form – edgy, careless and celebratory – the release was a result of the first-ever RCPM “VivaCast” (a term the band self-coined), which included a web cast that brought daily audio and video updates to thousands of homes during the recording process, culminating with a sold out concert in Cholla Bay, Mexico. With Turbo Ocho and now, again with Glow In The Dark, RCPM continues to break through old definitions of what is expected of a rock band to forge its own path directly to what matters most – the fans.

It’s no wonder RCPM’s out-of-the-box approach to recordings and releases garners a lot of attention, but at the end of the day, creating great music and making the live music experience an unforgettable one is the band’s primary focus.  Clyne’s songwriting is often compared to the greats of Rock and Americana music, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp and Steve Earle.  As frontman for mid-90s The Refreshments, Clyne scored hits with the singles “Banditos” and “Down Together” and also secured a place in TV history when he penned and performed the theme for the hit animated FOX-TV show, King of the Hill.

Old 97's @ Boulder Theater

The Old 97’s, one of the most acclaimed and beloved bands to spring from the 90s indie rock scene, formed in Dallas in 1993, and are often considered one of the pioneers of the Alt Country genre, although their influences are as varied as The Kinks, The Beatles, The Pixies, David Bowie, Johnny Cash (hence the name) and Merle Haggard. Their career got off to a fast start in 1994 with their debut release, Hitchhike To Rhome.

Old 97’s are comprised of: Rhett Miller, bassist/vocalist Murry Hammond, lead guitarist Ken Bethea and drummer Philip Peeples.

Their latest album, Blame It On Gravity, superbly combines the various elements of rock, punk, classic country and pop displayed on previous releases and the collection is easily the band’s most wellrounded stack of songs recorded for a single offering to date.
