Ziggy Marley "Family Time" @ Boulder Theater

Ziggy Marley presents "Family Time" performing songs from his children's album.

In the wake of his 2006 album Love Is My Religion, which earned his fourth Grammy Award, Ziggy Marley shares his musical love with families - his own and the extended human family. Marley's third solo release, Family Time, is produced with old friend Don Was and will be released this May on Marley's independent Tuff Gong Worldwide label.

An easygoing journey of original tunes and a few covers, the album offers a full collection of family-oriented songs for those already familiar with Marley's beloved work in the genre, and may serve to introduce today's youngest generation to reggae. Highly listenable many times around, a quality that parents will appreciate, Family Time resonates with themes of love, responsibility, unity, freedom and fun (not to mention generosity - proceeds from the sale of Family Time will benefit Chepstowe Basic School in Port Antonio, Jamaica).

The Avett Brothers @ Boulder Theater

North Carolina's Avett Brothers play acoustic music that has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll -- which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett cut their teeth as musicians.

avettTheir songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.

They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that's what you'll find.

Reed Foehl CD Release @ Boulder Theater

Reed Foehl will celebrate on June 11 the release of Once an Ocean at the Boulder Theater with a concert featuring Frazey Ford and Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas and formerly Boulder-based guitar hero Jefferson Hamer.

Opening the special evening of music will be Lyons' own Moody Sisters, followed by a set from Ford and Klein's band.

The new CD, recorded with Tanya's producer John Raham in Vancouver, Canada, is a new chapter in Foehl's already successful performance and songwriting career going back to his days with Acoustic Junction.  Once an Ocean, Foehl's third solo release, features a deft weaving of folk-rock, country and indie pop that reveals an edgy look at love and loss that never sinks into saccharine sentimentality or cold remove.

Advance copies of Once an Ocean, produced by Foehl, Hamer and Raham, are already making waves among industry insiders as a masterfully performed and produced collection of excellent new songs.  The record sparkles start-to-finish with the performance of Hamer on guitar and Raham on drums, and Ford and Klein lending both vocal and instrumental support.  Expect an equally energetic, powerful performance June 11.

Handpicked Holler! | Avery Brewery | Boulder

Avery Brewery in Boulder Colorado has a small tucked away tasting room down the back ally of a local business park. They have a large selection of fresh tasty beers on tap, and I was there enjoying one when four guys drove up in a Green Van from Ft Collins. As they unloaded their equipment, set up their mics, tuned their guitars, and oiled up the Tuba I had no idea what to expect. What I got was a great set of music from Ft. Collins own Handpicked Holler!.

The Robert Cray Band @ Boulder Theater

For thirty-plus years Robert Cray has laid down track after track of good-time, uptown, low-down blues. He’s won five Grammys and been nominated an astounding 13 times.  What he hasn’t done is work this magic on a full-length concert CD, where the fires that drive him onstage burn on disc as well.

Robert Cray is one of a precious few young (at this stage, that translates to under 50 years of age) blues artists with the talent and vision to successfully usher the idiom into the 21st century without resorting either to slavish imitation or simply playing rock while passing it off as blues. Just as importantly, his immensely popular records helped immeasurably to jump-start the contemporary blues boom that still holds sway to this day. Blessed with a soulful voice that sometimes recalls '60s-great O.V. Wright and a concise lead guitar approach that never wastes notes, Cray's rise to international fame was indeed a heartwarming one.

Spring Creek @ Boulder Theate

Spring Creek celebrates the release of their Rebel Records debut "Way Up on a Mountain" at Boulder Theater CD Release Party.

These musical road warriors have held tight to the bluegrass tradition, emulating the first generation greats while presenting a youthful, fresh sound. They eat, sleep and drink their craft within a musical community steeped in bluegrass.  Never satisfied with the ordinary, these four voraciously search for unique or little-known songs, which they mold and shape through intricate instrumental arrangements and pristine vocal harmonies.

In 2009, Spring Creek will join the ranks of Ralph Stanley, Kenny & Amanda Smith and Steep Canyon Rangers as a Rebel Records recording artist. Spring Creek's creative original songs and meticulous harmony vocals caught the attention of the nearly 50 year-old Charlottesville, Virginia, bluegrass label—which has never signed a Colorado-based band.  Spring Creek will release Way Up on a Mountain on May 5, 2009.

Spring Creek have two independent albums on the shelf, including 2008’s Lonesome Way to Go, expertly produced by Grammy award winner Sally Van Meter.  The album has won praise from bluegrass critics and DJs alike, and can be heard on bluegrass radio all over the world.

Spring Creek are the 2007 Telluride and RockyGrass Festival winners, and are the first band to win both titles in the same summer.  Their reputation for excellence made them the most in-demand Colorado bluegrass band this past summer, earning them spots at more than ten regional festivals.  Their songs have already become local jam standards and have been covered by internationally touring acts such as Uncle Earl.  In addition, the band's original crowd favorite "High Up in the Mountains" won the Vox Populi Award for Best Americana Song from the Independent Music Awards.

Soul Rebels Brass Band @ Boulder Theater

Imagine blending the sounds of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock, and reggae so seemingly it defies category. Now shrink that idea into a seven-piece ensemble, add a hip hop sensibility plus a hundred years of New Orleans jazz tradition, and you'll get the Louisiana sound known as the Soul Rebels. This shrewd crew of college trained multi-instrumentalists are forcing listeners to "Let your mind be free" as they "Work it out" on the dance floor. There music is utterly uplifting and hard core leaving fans with a myriad of intrinsic sounds and songs to enjoy.

After parading around the streets of New Orleans in the traditions of the second line and jazz funerals, the Soul Rebels began their professional debut with the famed Neville Brothers in New Orleans at the Hot Spot Tipitina's! The Soul Rebels rocked so hard and so strong they continued opening for the Neville Brothers and beyond. The band was featured in Spike Lee's HBO Documentary "When the Levees Broke". The bands hard funk groove has landed them gigs as an opening act for: Bootsy Collins, A Tribe Called Quest, Better than Ezra, Counting Crows, Olympia Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Roy Hargrove, James Brown, Allen Toussaint, Lionel Hampton, Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis,The Fugees, Digital Underground, The Roots, Brand New Heavies, The Gap Band, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and many more.

Perhaps there latest album, "Rebelution" says it all. The Souls Rebels have rebelled against the music world rapping, soul shouting, and blasting out an assault of what is, in the truest possible way, unquestionably the hottest dance sound around.  The band’s mission is to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. So, bring a taste of New Orleans to your festival, club, or party today with a visit from the Soul Rebels Brass Band.
