Paper Bird & Elephant Revival @ Boulder Theater

Paper Bird - photos by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web

Paper Bird is best understood not by a description of their music (which you could call ragtime, jazz, modern folk or Americana), but by a rundown of their unique instrumentation: 3 Female Vocals on a bouncing bed of Banjo, Trombone, Upright Bass and Guitar. Paper Bird has been called "black and white twentieth century America at its best" (Syntax Magazine), "a musical manifestation of the roots and philosophy that Coloradans share" (Boulder Weekly), and "a more beguiling Jolie Holland with the sublime, mellifluous, old-timey harmonies of the Chordettes" (Westword).

Elephant Revival is a soulful, seductive quiver of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists that reign from points all across America. Since Oct 06' Elephant Revival have herded in a greatly applauded neo-acoustic gyptic revival at festivals, theaters, clubs and house concerts. The Revival plays entirely original music with a few carefully chosen traditionals and eclectic cover tunes but their precise genre is hard to pin down. As independent film director Mikey Eberle elaborates, "When I hear Elephant Revival I am struck by my inability to define it. I am forced to confront the music as it is, connecting to it with a virgin spirit of mind. Consequently it feels like I am experiencing music and all its joys for the very first time."

Hot Buttered Rum & The Travelin' McCourys @ Boulder Theater

HBR - photos by Sanjay Suchak- for the Grateful Web

Hot Buttered Rum, one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising stars in the musical firmament, has become, over the last five years, a group that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, the band melds blues, folks, bluegrass, jazz, and rock, and the members' varying degrees of classical training lead them to invest heavily in group composition. The widespread appeal of HBR's music stems not only from the band's musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together. It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success.

The Travelin' McCourys, Ron McCoury on mandolin, Rob McCoury on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and Alan Bartram on bass, with featured guests on guitar and vocals, is the latest incarnation of the most awarded band in the history of bluegrass -The Del McCoury Band. Known for their individual prowess on their instruments and their rapidly expanding reputation as collaborators with the members of numerous musical icons from Vince Gill to the Allman Brothers and Phish, this touring unit blends the best of the Appalachian tradition with the improvisational magic of jazz. Unique live collaborations are the hallmark of their performances, and demonstrates why critics and musicians across the country hail them as the best bluegrass band in the world.

Dark Star Orchestra's Two Night Celebration @ Boulder Theater

photos by Laura McDaniel- for the Grateful Web

A two night celebration of the Dead! Giving homage in a continually evolving artistic outlet, the Dark Star Orchestra recreates historic Grateful Dead set lists with compelling accuracy. Each night, the Chicago-based band decides on performing one show from the over 2,500 that the Grateful Dead originally performed during their 30 year tenure as fathers of improvisational rock.

Dark Star Orchestra presents the complete original set list, song by song, and in order, with uncanny faithful interpretation. To date, DSO has covered more than 1,500 different Grateful Dead shows The group has their craft so well-refined that even members of the Dead themselves, rhythm guitarist/singer Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, and late keyboardist Vince Welnick, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters.

Precision is king with this group, who position the stage plot based on the year of Grateful Dead show they are performing. Dark Star Orchestra adapts their phrasing, voice arrangements, and even arranges specific musical equipment for the various eras in which they perform.

At the end of every performance, the band announces the date and venue where the original show just covered took place. Dark Star Orchestra dips into every incarnation of the Dead, so most fans can "see" shows that happened long before some were born.

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue @ Boulder Theater

photo by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review was formed in 2005 from the top players of the foremost Grateful Dead tribute bands in the Rocky Mountain region, Shakedown Street & Dark Star Orchestra. Based originally on a premise of player interchangeability to suit the situation, compatibility and success have coalesced the band into its present configuration. The band's forte lies in its faithful rendering of Grateful Dead material, both originals and covers, and the Grateful Dead's trademark style of improvisation. Achieved through a careful balance of comprehension and execution of the more defined musical elements of the material with a fearless passion to connect with the elusive "X factor" that Jerry Garcia affectionately spoke of, RMGDR remains aligned with the Dead's creed of playing off the energy of the audience and making them an integral component of the overall dynamic.

Todd Snider @ Boulder Theater

Todd Snider- for the Grateful Web

Keith Richards said humor was rock and roll's greatest weapon, Bob Dylan proved it and Todd Snider takes it to heart. For twelve years, Snider has been a satirist, class cutup and the rare artist who understands and celebrates the connections between the Stones, Dylan, Bill Hicks, John Prine, Mitch Hedberg, Kris Kristofferson, Hunter S. Thompson and Randy Newman. Snider's records are fun even when they aren't being funny, funny even when they're sad, and no less truthful for the laughs.

For fans of rock 'n' roll, folk, country and Americana music have long been held in Snider's sway. His last album, 2006's The Devil You Know, landed him on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Night With David Letterman, and it appeared on numerous year-end Top 10 lists. Peace Queer, his newest release, is just the beginning of his typically unique vision. It is the first in a trilogy. Even as we celebrate the release of Peace Queer, Snider is already working on the follow-up, with Rolling Stones producer Don Was. After that, there will be a rock album called Shit Sandwich.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo @ Boulder Theater

Ladysmith Black Mambazo- for the Grateful Web

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the GRAMMY® Award winning vocal group from South Africa that has conquered nations in its own way with a joyous and spiritually charged brand of vocal music and native choreography, pays tribute to this historical icon with their new Heads Up International release, Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu. Ilembe celebrates not only Shaka Zulu but the sense of perseverance, creativity and pride that he has inspired in generations of descendants.

For more than thirty years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past three decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with.

Femi Kuti & the Positive Force @ Boulder Theater

Femi Kuti- for the Grateful Web

Four years after the DVD Live@Shrine, Femi Kuti returns with a generous, powerful and timeless new album, continuing to explore and push back the frontiers of Afrobeat. Thirteen titles that grab your belly, your feet, your heart and your head. From the ghettos of Lagos to the palaces of corrupt politicians, Day by Day takes us through the winding roads of African paradox. Why is such a rich continent inhabited by the world's poorest people?

Day by Day is Nigeria in all of its states. We find elaborate instrumental patterns, both in their texture and in their structure ("Demo Crazy") refrains as soulful as the best old hits Curtis Mayfield hits ("Eh Oh") and hot numbers to set light to any dancefloor. His group, Positive Force, built the foundations in Lagos and, during timely visits during sessions in Paris, other artists brought their building blocks to the structure. Keziah Jones made his guitar swing on "Tell Me" and "Dem Funny," Femi's young son, Madé, also joined the adventure, participating in all the tracks on this delicious album – to be released on November 18th.

Copying note for note his Father's music has never been Femi's goal. If he accompanied Fela's musicians during his youth, he decided as early as 1986 to free himself up and create his own band. Whilst always respecting his musical heritage, Femi has refined over more than twenty years, an afrobeat with soul-jazz nuances that is entirely his own.
