Trace Bundy CD Release @ Boulder Theater

photo by Kimberly Kay- for the Grateful Web

Guitar wizard Trace Bundy celebrates the release of his new Studio CD titled "Missile Bell - Part 2" at Boulder Theater.

Trace Bundy must not only be heard, but seen. Listening is one thing, but seeing the fan-dubbed "Acoustic Ninja" play live, it becomes quite confusing how one man can do that with just two hands and ten fingers - harmonics, right-hand tapping, slapping, percussive, looping, multiple capos, lightning fast picking... you name it. Since Trace hit the road as a full-time touring musician, the exponential growth of his fan base resulted in sold-out shows with standing ovations at venues across the country and around the world (throughout the US and 13 countries). Video clips of his playing have quickly circulated across the globe, with views of over 2,500,000 on YouTube. Don't take our word for it, go to and watch the videos.  After all, Trace Bundy must not only be heard, but seen.

Hot Buttered Rum for Two Nights in Boulder - Oct 10 & 11

HBR @ All Good Fest - photo by Sanjay Suchak- for the Grateful Web

In the Fall of 2006, itching to release their first live album, Hot Buttered Rum announced that it would be recording a handful of shows for official release.  Live in the Northeast (released May 2007) beautifully reveals the true core of live Butter: music that is forceful without being flashy, serious without being stuffy, intricate without being inaccessible, and diverse without being distracting.  The performances were professionally multi-tracked and later carefully mixed by Butter's long-time sound engineer, Josh Osmond. The result is striking, presenting the unique energy and improvisational spirit of a Hot Buttered Rum live performance in studio-quality sound.

Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, no prior Butter recording has so perfectly displayed the band's bolder and heavier side.  Their full sound permeates Live in the Northeast - from the reggae-tinged "Return Someday" and psychedelica of "Desert Rat" through definitive covers of the Grateful Dead's "Cumberland Blues" and Leo Sayer's "Feel Like Dancin'" - winding the listener through a robust and intense set of acoustic rock.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, the guys of Hot Buttered Rum grew up on the trails, in the mountains, and on the slopes.  Their ties with nature have only grown and as a group, the band has dedicated much time and energy to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting alternative fuel sources.  As a heavily touring band, Hot Buttered Rum had to face the tough reality of how a national tour can affect the environment and counter it with a positive change.  In response, the band helped to promote the biofuel renaissance, touring the country on recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel as early as 2003.  Band members have participated in numerous Renewable Energy and Biofuel conferences, as well as sitting on discussion panels at such renowned music festivals as Bonnaroo and High Sierra.  Highlighted in the November/December 2005 issue of E: Environmental Magazine, Hot Buttered Rum is commended for trying to "leave an impact on its fans, and not solely on the road that passes beneath its bus tires as it travels from coast to coast".  For more information on Hot Buttered Rum and their greening efforts, visit the band's website.

The band's current list of confirmed tour dates is as follows:

September 07 Rancho Nicasio Nicasio CA
September 13 Mulberry Mountain Music Festival Ozark AR
September 23 Humboldt Brewery Arcata CA
September 24 Stillwater Ashland CA
September 25 Domino Room Bend OR
September 26 Wonder Ballroom Portland OR
September 27 Triple Door Seattle WA Two Shows!
September 28 W.O.W. Hall Eugene OR
October 10-11 Fox Theatre Boulder CO
October 30-31 Las Tortugas at Evergreen Lodge Groveland CA

November 22 Electric Factory Philadelphia PA supporting Dark Star Orchestra
November 23 Fairfield Theatre Bridgeport CT supporting Dark Star Orchestra
January 24 Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Utica NY
February 20-21 Wintergrass Tacoma WA

More dates to be announced.

The widespread appeal of Hot Buttered Rum's music stems not only from the band's musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together.  It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success. The band has performed at festivals as diverse as the Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, Grey Fox, High Sierra and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and has shared the stage with such artists as Phil Lesh, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, Chris Thile, Mike Marshall and Peter Rowan, the last two of whom worked with the band on its critically-acclaimed studio release, Well-Oiled Machine.

Old Crow Medicine Show @ Boulder Theater

Old Crow Medicine Show- for the Grateful Web

With combined sales totaling over 280,000 albums, an appearance on Austin City Limits, two performances on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and multiple appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, various NPR programs and the Grand Ole Opry, OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW prepares for the September 23rd release of TENNESSEE PUSHER, their third album for Nettwerk Music Group and their most personal album to date.

TENNESSEE PUSHER, produced by Don Was (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt), features 13 infectious tracks that offer a virtual American road trip, populated with characters that seem to span a century of the South. Down and outers, hustlers, freighthoppers - these are just a few of the archetypes we meet along the way. OCMS continues to create their special blend of American roots, rock, blues and country, but on TENNESSEE PUSHER, the band has truly found their own voice.  With the exception of  "Always Lift Him Up" by Blind Alfred Reed, all of the tracks on the album are OCMS originals. Also noteworthy are two distinguished session musicians that joined the band in the studio: Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Neil Young, Brian Wilson) on drums and Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) on Hammond C-3 organ.

When asked why he chose to work with OCMS, Don Was explains:  "People ask me what The Old Crow Medicine Show are all about. If I'm in a hurry, I just say that they're The Clash of bluegrass music, but that doesn't really do anyone any justice. I could tell 'em that they're a rock 'n roll band who use fiddles and acoustic guitars instead of Les Pauls and Marshal stacks, but that's only one small part of the story. They're an American Band - even more so than Grand Funk Railroad! In fact, it's not hyperbolic to say that, as musicians, songwriters and singers, they are the smartest and finest purveyors of American music to come down the pike in decades."

OCMS will begin touring in support of TENNESSEE PUSHER on September 3rd in the UK, with stops in Manchester, Edinburgh and London before hitting the US on September 18th. With most of their time spent on the road, OCMS has made a name for themselves as energetic performers with an unbridled spirit. It's a live show not to be missed.

Railroad Earth is Coming to Boulder - Sept 19 & 20

photos by Sanjay Suchak- for the Grateful Web

Anticipation has been building for a new release and for the first time in 4 years, Railroad Earth found themselves back in the studio recording all new material.  It's definitely a home-grown project, much like the band itself.  Railroad Earth's new studio release, Amen Corner, was written and recorded at singer Todd Sheaffer's empty, 300 year-old house in New Jersey's rural countryside. What happened inside the building was the experience of a lifetime for the band's members, resulting in an early creative pinnacle of a gifted young band, and an album that is an instant Americana classic. Amen Corner is a collection of crisp and crafted roots, bluegrass, and acoustic sides that resonates in all the right places. The tunes breathe both on and between the notes. They hit you immediately, but then linger like a good buzz.  Amen Corner hit stores June 10, 2008 on SCI Fidelity Records.

Railroad Earth is currently on tour.  Current confirmed tour dates include:
August 13-14 YarmonyGrass Festival Copper Mountain CO
September 04 9:30 Club Washington DC

"Excuse me sir, can I help you find something?"

"No, I don't think so."

"Well which seats are you supposed to be in?"

"Seats? What do you mean?"

"This is the reserved seating section, you have to have a special ticket to sit down here."

"Oh, no problem. I'm not going to sit, I'm here to take pictures of the band."

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue @ Boulder Theater

Rob Eaton of DSO - photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review is the apex of Colorado's vast cadre of uniquely talented and "Deadicated" musicians. Over the years, many regional bands have offered up their best efforts toward keeping alive the unparalleled music and party spirit of the phenomenon that was the Grateful Dead. From this cross-pollenating web of specialized tribute musicians has shaken out a pool of players deemed most apt, by popular opinion and support, to offer the truest interpretation of the essence of that legendary band.

Unlike many "put a quarter in the jukebox" tribute bands, Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review delivers a caliber of genuineness, spontaneity and artistic integrity by weaving their own measure of "X factor creativity" into the songs, jams and transitional interludes.  Chemistry, both personal and musical, is an important ingredient of the musical high generated by RMGDR. This chemistry exists both among the band members themselves and between the band and their all-important audiences. It is a closed-loop of positive energy that feeds on itself and tends to elevate gyrating bones off the floor.

Perfect harmony with this chemistry emanates when the band is joined by their good friend from Dark Star Orchestra, Rob Eaton. The consummate Grateful Dead tribute musician, Rob is proudly presented as special guest of Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review at the Boulder Theater. Don't miss what is sure to be a very special evening!

The Next Best Thing, Lez Zeppelin Rambles On Through Boulder

Anyone out there who might have read any of my previous Grateful Web publications, and I'm hoping there is at least one of you out there, may have noticed my slight fetish for Led Zeppelin references, analogies, and generalized words of praise. What can I say, I love the classics.

Matmos Takes on Boulder Theater July 15th

Matmos- for the Grateful Web

Matmos' approach is quickly pushing them to the center of the experimental music world.  Straddling pop and serious electronica, they've toured and recorded with pop icon Bjork, performed in Lincoln Center and the Whitney Museum of Art, given seminars at Harvard and worked with some of the top musicians in the classical world. They're collaborating with the Kronos Quartet and composer Terry Riley, the city of Verona commissioned a re-think of Verdi's "Aida" from them last summer, and they're now readying a new work for the prestigious Group de Recherches Musicales in Paris.

"It's fascinating, what they're doing," says David Harrington, founder and first violinist of the Kronos Quartet, who commissioned a piece from Matmos after hearing one of their early recordings. "They invent these incredibly beautiful, thought-provoking sounds, and bring them together in ways that seem totally unique and natural. And there's nothing precious about it; there's a kind of openness about their music that attracted me immediately."

The new album finds the dynamic duo taking a holiday from conceptual responsibility, skipping the outré sampling antics in favor of a light-hearted "cosmic-pop" record made entirely out of synthesizers. Expect the unexpected.

Opening for the duo is Offthesky, multi tasking interdisciplinary artist Jason Corder from Lexington, Kentucky. Presenting Phonograffiti, a portmanteau that describes an interactive artistic community performance project where the musician and public audience are able to interact together on an intimate level. It is an event where everyone is able to become a performer. Offthesky has invited local painters to take the stage, painting on canvas hooked up with contact microphones. The painting creates the sound for the musician to process via brush strokes or light tapping while painting on the canvas during the performance.

Radio Ready

Celebrating 30 years of independent community radio, Communikey presents Matmos in honor of KGNU. Matmos will make a special appearance at KGNU performing live from the studio on Monday July 14th. A portion of proceeds from the 30 Year Anniversary Celebration show at the Boulder Theater on Tuesday July 15th will go to benefit the station. Doors are at 8:00pm and the show is all ages.
