Jeff Tweedy of Wilco - Boulder Theater's 75th Anniversary Kick Off!

The Boulder Theater is proud to announce two special performances with singer, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Tweedy on January 7th and 8th, 2011.  These concerts celebrate opening weekend of the 2011 concert season, and will be the first in a series of events commemorating this cultural institution’s 75th Anniversary.

As the founding member and leader of the ground-breaking American rock band Wilco and co-founder of the alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy is one of contemporary American music’s most accomplished artists. Since starting Wilco in 1994 Tweedy has written original songs for seven Wilco albums, sold millions of records worldwide, won two Grammy Awards, and earned rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Wilco’s latest studio album, 2009’s Grammy-nominated Wilco (The Album) landed on many critics’ lists as one of the year’s best albums and Rolling Stone magazine cited Wilco’s 2002 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as the 3rd best album of the decade.

While maintaining a full schedule of recording, releasing albums and touring extensively with Wilco, Tweedy has also toured frequently as a solo artist, playing intimate unscripted acoustic sets that draw from his 400-plus song repertoire.  A departure from Wilco’s carefully orchestrated, sonically complex performances, the solo concerts showcase Tweedy’s prolific output as a songwriter, his proficiency as a guitarist and his wry sense of humor.

Tweedy’s most recent work includes the launching of Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA and producing soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples’ latest release, the 2010 Grammy-nominated You Are Not Alone.

Come celebrate the Silver Anniversary of The Boulder Theater, which opened for business on January 9th, 1936 with a screening of the Paramount Pictures film, "A Bride Comes Home".

Tickets are on sale at Boulder Theater Box Office. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets by phone.  Tickets are also available through the Boulder Theater website @ www.bouldertheater.com.

Acoustic Africa @ the Boulder Theater | 03.16

Boulder Weekly & Z2 Entertainment are proud to present Acoustic Africa ft. Habib Koite, Oliver Mtukudzi & Afel Bocoum at the Boulder Theater on Wednesday, March 16th, 2011.

The second installment of IMN’s exhilarating musical journey focuses on the richness of the African guitar tradition. The Acoustic Africa tour includes Habib Koité, the Malian superstar whose exciting concerts have endeared him to audiences worldwide, Oliver Mtukudzi, the best-selling artist in his home country of Zimbabwe, and Afel Bocoum, a guitarist, singer, and composer from Mali whose songs evoke the evolution of traditional Malian society.

One of Africa’s most exciting performers, Habib Koite plays music that reflects the diverse musical traditions of his Malian homeland. Accompanied by his band Bamada, Koite has released a number of successful and critically acclaimed albums and has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and in major magazines such as People and Rolling Stone. Over the past 10 years, Habib and his band have performed over 600 concerts for adoring audiences in far-flung locations such as Japan, Australia, Brazil and Kazakhstan. With their engaging stage presence and expert musicianship, Habib Koite and Bamada always put on a show to remember.

Lovingly called “Tuku”, Oliver Mtukudzi began recording in the mid-1970s as a member of Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured Thomas Mapfumo. After Wagon Wheels rolled to fame in Southern Africa, Tuku formed Black Spirits, the band that has backed him throughout his career. Mtukudzi has been heavily influenced by chimurenga, the genre pioneered by Mapfumo that is inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano). His music also incorporates pop influences, South Africa mbaqanga, the energetic Zimbabwean pop style JIT, and the traditional kateke drumming of his clan, the Korekore. While Tuku’s music is undeniably contagious, it is his lyrics that have captured the hearts of his people as his songs invariably deal with social and economic issues. One of Tuku’s biggest fans is Bonnie Raitt, who has not only called Tuku “a treasure,” but has also used his music as inspiration for the song “One Belief Away” on her album Fundamental.

Afel Bocoum began his music career with his uncle Ali Farka Toure in the group Asco, a collaboration which lasted some thirty years. In the 1980s, he founded his own group named Alkibar, in which he plays the guitar, sings, and composes. Bocoum sings mainly in Sonrai, his mother tongue, but also in Tamashek, the language of the Tuareg, and in Bambara. In spite of his growing success, Bocoum remains gentle and unassuming, modestly directing the energy this recognition brings him towards the welfare of his people and the inspiration they give to his music. In 2002, Afel collaborated with the lead singer of Blur, Damon Albarn, on the extremely popular album Mali Music. The gigs they played together were well received, especially the concert at the Barbican in London in June 2003. Damon also made a guest appearance beside Afel on a larger stage at Roskilde in Denmark in front of 65,000 people. With remarkable subtlety and a sure talent, Bocoum has proved that he is a true “messenger of the great river,” and it’s certain he will actively contribute to keeping Malian music at the forefront of the international scene.

Tickets are on sale at Boulder Theater Box Office. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets by phone.

VibeSquad at the Boulder Theater - 03.11.11

Z2 Entertainment is proud to present VibeSquaD at the Boulder Theater on Friday, March 11th.

VibeSquaD, aka Aaron Holstein, is Colorado’s most beloved bass music producer/performer/innovator. His trained musical background contribute to his unique take on bass music, which carries him around the country playing packed clubs coast to coast.

Since VibeSquaD’s inception in 2007, he has released three full-length albums, two previous EP’s, as well as remixes and singles for Interchill, Multi Music and Proboscis. The New Creatures EP is his next release, showcasing his top-notch production skills and originality over the course of six tracks. The EP is charged with the energy and positivity that has come to define VibeSquaD’s signature sound and vibrant stage persona.

In addition to his deep electronic production abilities, New Creatures shows the influence Aaron’s twenty plus years experience playing live music in various touring groups has on his sound. As a trained multi instrumentalist with a jazz background, VibeSquaD adds melodic sensibility to these gems of bass music and truly delivers on in this six-track EP. Equipped with tweaked vocal samples, polyrhythmic textures, and trunk rattling bass, these tracks grab hold and refuse to let go. Swirling, soaring synth textures weave throughout hard-hitting drum patterns on top of crushing bass thick enough to send any dance floor into a frenzy.

Tickets are on sale at Boulder Theater Box Office. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets by phone. Tickets are also available through their website @ www.bouldertheater.com.  Tickets are On Sale Now!

Great American Taxi announces Boulder charity event

Great American Taxi will host a night of music at the historic Boulder Theater here to raise money for the Mark Vann Foundation charity.  In its eighth year running, the holiday benefit concert this year includes Great American Taxi, Todd Snider, Bill McKay Band, Bonfire Dub, Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce and others.

“It’s our own little way of keeping alive and nurturing the joyous spirit of Mark Vann,” said Chad Staehly, executive director of the foundation and keyboardist/singer for Great American Taxi. Vann, the banjo player for the Boulder-based band Leftover Salmon, died in 2002; the foundation in his name assists various nonprofit groups.

This year funds will directly benefit There With Care and CareConnect.  Previous beneficiaries include Rock-the-Earth, The Rex Foundation, Tipitinas Foundation Artist Relief Fund, ConservationValue, Community Food Share (Boulder & Broomfield Counties' Food Bank), The Music Maker Relief Foundation, The Van Go Mobile Arts Project and JAMS, and the Steam Powered Preservation Society.

The evening also includes an art exhibit and silent auction. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20. People are encouraged to wear a fun or favorite hat.

Great American Taxi, revered as one of the most energetic country-, rock- and bluegrass-influenced Americana bands in the land, is currently in the midst of its Fall Harvest tour, playing with some of the most innovative and acclaimed players currently on the jamband/newgrass and Americana scenes.

Taxi’s latest CD release, Reckless Habits, remains active on both the Jambands.com radio chart and the Colorado radio chart, complemented by two months in the Top 25 on the Americana radio chart.

Kyle Hollingsworth Unveils 2010 Fall Plans

Following The String Cheese Incident’s Hulaween shows at the famed Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth is right back at it one week later. Sunday, November 7th, Kyle joins television’s hit children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba, live at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO, bringing his own brand new children’s tunes with him. The following week, Kyle Hollingsworth Band travels to the Midwest with St. Louis’ Messy Jiverson supporting all dates before heading to the East Coast to perform with Bonerama, Steve Kimock and Terrence Higgins (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) for three nights as a special guest.

To wrap up 2010, Kyle will host Hoppy Holidays, a unique brew tour experience and blowout run with Kyle Hollingsworth Band. DJ Logic and Liza Oxnard lend a hand to the party, jumping on board with KHB at both Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO, and Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins, CO. Once again, Kyle has teamed up with renowned local breweries to craft two signature beers – this time with Boulder Beer and Avery Brewing – that will be available at each show. 30 years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and incredible ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know the band can move from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only on stage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

His recent release, titled Then There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.
