KELLER WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES WINTER TOUR DATES

photos by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web

Keller Williams hits the road this winter to tour southern U.S. states.  The one-man-band has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house—all by himself. He's been called a "solo cult-hero" and "music's mad-scientist."

For over 100 shows a year, Williams has proven himself to be a master of improvisational performance art. In his one-man show, he pads barefoot from guitar to bass to percussion stations, using looping effects—and enough instruments to stock a strip-mall music store—to layer sound atop sound until the stage swirls with a full-blown composition.

Keller Williams' current list of confirmed tour dates is as follows:

Additional dates to be confirmed.

While Keller has made liberal use of technology throughout his solo career, he also knows that musicianship is ultimately a human undertaking. With a seemingly unquenchable thirst for all genres of music - bluegrass, jazz, and—who'd-a-thunk-it—hard rock – occasionally Williams puts unyielding faith in a backing band, as he did for his September 2008 release LIVE.  On LIVE, Keller taps into the world-class talent of Keith Moseley (bass – The String Cheese Incident), Gibb Droll (guitar – Marc Broussard, Brandi Carlile), and Jeff Sipe (drums – Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon). The musical horsepower of four friends playing together on stage proves stronger than even Keller had dreamed. Recorded at select live shows during a winter 2008 tour, and featuring seventeen tracks that span Keller's career, Live is a testament to how a band, with the right chemistry and chops, can take a song to places even the writer couldn't have imagined.

Turbine Announces US Winter Tour

photos by Sam Holloway- for the Grateful Web

The versatile four-piece band Turbine have jam-packed their calendars with coast-to-coast US tour dates, spanning December through February. True to their native New York City, the quadraphonic barrage is a genre splitting melting pot of rock, funk, bluegrass, and Americana. Hitting the road for nearly two straight months, Turbine is creating a marked buzz on the music scene with their infectious songwriting skills and high-octane live performances.

Having already been declared an "On the Verge" artist by Relix magazine, Turbine is making noise on all levels. The group has also been featured on the Relix CD and has garnered press from Hittin' The Note magazine. Their new album, Reward, showcases a band unafraid to write or play in any style possible. With an invigorating blend of trans-genre music, Turbine weaves their way through improvisational instrumental arrangements and contagious lyrical passages. Melodic guitar runs, wailing harmonicas and danceable rhythms add to the Turbine experience.

Kicking off the tour in Cleveland, OH on December 18th, Turbine will wind their way through the Midwest. The December 19th show at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago pairs Turbine with fellow Relix "On The Verge" artist Lubriphonic. They will then make stops in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, before a special six night run to end the year in Colorado. January will find the group in Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada before they work their way up the west coast with a run of shows in California, Oregon, and Washington. Alaska in Winter's sophomore release 'Holiday'

Alaska in Winter- for the Grateful Web

Alaska In Winter began when art student, Brandon Bethancourt spent a semester writing and recording music in an isolated cabin on the south coast of Alaska. Upon arrival back in New Mexico, he teamed up with Zach Condon of Beirut, Heather Trost of A Hawk And A Hacksaw and other friends, and thus began work on the album Dance Party In The Balkans. This debut release was released by Milan Records in July 2007 in the US after a release in the UK by Regular Beat a few months earlier.

After his critically acclaimed debut release, Bethancourt decided to quit his job, move out of his house and relocate to Berlin, Germany – a city he had been to before and had always dreamed of living in.  He has spent the past 6 months writing and recording this upcoming release Holiday and begins his tour of Europe in late September.  Holiday will be released on Milan Records on November 18, 2008.

Bethancourt takes much of his influence from his early years of growing up in the American South West, immersed in the musical low-rider culture of Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a slight Arabian influence on the part of his parents and their Byzantine church music. He combines these traditional sounds with programmed beats and use of the vocoder among other new technologies and techniques.

Because Bethancourt is the sole member of Alaska in Winter and does not read or write music, he uses multi-track recording to build his musical layers, using a variety of techniques.  "For Holiday, I recorded everything in my living room on a laptop and an old micro cassette tape recorder and used a German ghetto blaster as my monitor speakers. The only things I brought with me to Europe were my Powerbook laptop, an effects processor, a small midi keyboard, a microphone, and the hand held micro cassette tape recorder," he explains.  "Because I didn't actually have any instruments with me (aside from the elements I recorded before I came to Europe), the album turned out very electronic, very synthy as those were the only tools I had."

In comparing how Holiday differs from Dance Party in the Balkans, Bethancourt explains, "I've definitely been influenced by Berlin on this album - much more electronic than the last, heavily based on synths, bass, and dancier drums and with hints of minimal house elements creeping in ever so slightly. Even within the album itself I can hear a progression of the Berlin electronic music scene influencing me more and more with the amount of time I spent here.  The Berlin techno parties and all night dance marathons were big inspirations for me."

U-Melt- for the Grateful Web

It is our pleasure to announce U-Melt's 2009 Winter Tour! The tour will kick off on Thursday, January 22nd at Mulcahy's in Wantagh, NY and conclude during the last weekend of February when U-Melt returns to Phildelphia's North Star and a stop at Hunter Mountain for the first annual Winter Jam. In between, U-Melt will be returning to some of our favorite spots in the Northeast, including Boston, S. Burlington, Baltimore, Ithaca, Albany/Troy, Syracuse, and Northampton, as well as debuts at Maxwell's in Hoboken, The Ocean Mist in Wakefield, RI and The Fairfield Theater Company in Fairield, CT.

Following that show, U-Melt will be making stops in Raleigh, Wilmington, Charleston, Charlotte, and Atlanta, where we are very excited to be performing a late night show at Smith's Olde Bar following Umphrey's McGee's performance at the Varierty Playhouse earlier in the evening. King Blues Club on Friday, April 10th, when U-Melt will perform an Umphrey's McGee After Party, following Umphrey's show at Nokia Theater earlier that night. U-Melt will be re-uniting with Wyllys on a progressive series of events that touch on different aspects of electronic music. The two artists will perform interlocking sets with the middle set focused on particular styles of beats native to the areas they play. In Chicago this past December, we riffed on legendary Chicago house music and in New York, we will drop some drum and bass like they use to at Concrete Jungle. RICHIE HAVENS ON TOUR THIS WINTER

photos by Laura McDaniel- for the Grateful Web

A sense of timelessness rings throughout Richie Havens' latest release, Nobody Left to Crown, as though the passing years have only strengthened the meaning of his soul-filled folk rock. Nobody Left to Crown, recently released to the US on Verve Records this past July, attests that Richie Havens has never been more relevant, necessary even, than he is today.

Gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music, Richie Havens has a soulful singing style that remains as unique and ageless as when he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s. It's a voice that has inspired and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 - coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The Garden", in 1999. Richie Havens is not a man to easily abandon his hopes for a better world. "We are at the dawn of major change", he declares with a broad smile.  Nobody Left to Crown is his heartfelt and unwavering contribution to these fine aspirations.

For over three decades, Richie has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, he continues to view his calling as a higher one.  As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me.  I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business.  That's what it's about for me".

Richie Havens tours this summer and fall in support of Nobody Left to Crown.  His current list of tour dates is as follows:

The Bridge Ride 'Blind Man's Hill' Coast To Coast On Winter Tour

The Bridge- for the Grateful Web

Baltimore's favorite sons, The Bridge, head out for a 30-city, coast-to-coast, U.S tour this month that stretches through the end of February. The band begins with dates in the mid-Atlantic region before heading south for shows in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas, next making a full run up the West Coast to Washington before winding down to Colorado. The Bridge are touring behind Blind Man's Hill, their brand new album on Hyena Records.  The 12-track collection hit number seven this week on Americana Radio chart, while the six piece unit is coming off a sold out New Year's Eve show with the Rebirth Brass Band in Baltimore. After playing numerous summer festivals last year, as well as dates with Mike Gordon, Little Feat and Dark Star Orchestra, The Bridge have a growing word-of-mouth buzz based on word of their incendiary live performances. But while The Bridge's sets are often laced with fierce improvisations that touch on numerous corners of American roots music, it's the songwriting of founding members Cris Jacobs and Kenny Liner, resonating with odes to honey bees, poison wine and lives born to ramble, that is the cornerstone to their antique charm.

Upcoming tour dates for The Bridge are:

Lotus Announces Winter 2009 Tour

photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Lotus hits the road this winter for a run of shows in the country's southeastern states.  The tour comes on the heels of a huge year for Lotus, one that offered widespread exposure for their new album Hammerstrike and massive growth for the band.

The band's 2008 successes, including a coveted cover story in Pollstar Magazine and sold out shows from coast to coast, haven't distracted these humble musicians with Mennonite roots. As their relentless tour schedule proves, Lotus is ready to work. Their winter tour dates are as follows:

February 13       Recher Theatre                         Towson, MD
February 14       Recher Theatre                         Towson, MD
February 15       The Lantern Blacksburg              Blacksburg, VA
February 17       V Club                                      Huntington, WV
February 18       THE DAME                                Lexington, KY
February 19       Minglewood Hall                         Memphis, TN
February 20       The Valarium                             Knoxville, TN
February 21       Masquerade - Heaven Room        Atlanta, GA
March 6             Langerado Music Festival             Miami, FL

Spring tour dates will be announced soon. For more information and updates visit www.lotusvibes.com.

Lotus' most recent album, Hammerstrike (released in October 2008),  finds the band reaching back in order to move forward.  Primarily recorded live in one room to analog tape by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man), the album captures a sound that harkens back to the 70's but never slips into nostalgic retreads.  The compositions are focused and melodic, filled out with orchestration including swelling violins and cellos, banjo, wordless choirs, and electronic noises.  Though the tracks range from dance floor ready rockers to soaring post-rock instrumentals, the album is held together by a sanguine spirit pervading each track.  The big guitars, feedback, and distortion serve an optimistic purpose.  It is a decidedly American feel that invokes big skies, open roads, and a zealous yet naïve pursuit of the idea that defeat will never be conceded.

Lotus formed at a Mennonite college that had banned on-campus dancing as late as the 1980's, and has been creatively fusing electronic dance music with instrumental post-rock for the past eight years. Armed with a massive light rig and one of the most energetic shows on the circuit, Lotus was a go-to act for late night festival slots this past summer, performing at ROTHBURY, Summerfest, Camp Bisco, and others. Also in 2008, Lotus saw advance sellouts in venues throughout the U.S. including Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh, two nights at World Café Live in Philadelphia, two nights at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Higher Ground in Burlington, and Kinetic Playground in Chicago. The band's remix album, Copy Paste Repeat: Lotus Remixed was released in spring of 08 to critical acclaim
