Phil Ramone is the 'Genius' Behind Anticipated Winter Projects

Ella Fitzgerald- for the Grateful Web

With the success of Tony Bennett's 'Duets: An American Classic' (Columbia), 'We All Love Ella' (Verve), the corresponding PBS Special 'We Love Ella! A Tribute To The First Lady Of Song' and now the recently released memoir Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Music (Hyperion), one would think 2007 is already the year of Phil Ramone, but there's even more to come from the protean producer. The next four months bring a medley of new music productions for film, stage and CD.

*'AUGUST RUSH' WARNER BROS FILM OUT NOV 21st, 2007

Ramone produced three tracks sung by actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers for this musically narrated drama. Ramone served as the music producer for the concert prior to the films premiere featuring performances by The Berklee College of Music Orchestra and Choir, IMPACT's Charles Mack, cellist Jenn Kuhn, and guitarists Doug Smith and Christ Trapper with Berklee solo vocalists Jennifer Hirsch, and Kevin Ross and solo instrumentalists Alex Han and Alexis Grapsas.

*RUFUS WAINWRIGHT 'RUFUS DOES JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL' OUT DEC 4TH, 2007 ON GEFFEN

Ramone helped Wainwright recreate Judy Garland's famed 1961 Carnegie Hall concert in its entirety on this two disc 27 live track set.

*ANNE MURRAY 'DUETS: FRIENDS & LEGENDS' OUT JAN 15th, 2008 ON EMI

Some of the finest female voices intermingle on this album of Murray's classic songs. Recorded in Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto, Ramone paired Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Nelly Furtado, Isabelle Boulay, kd lang, Celtic Woman, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, Emmylou Harris, Jann Arden, Shelby Lynne, Sarah Brightman, Celine Dion, Amy Grant, Indigo Girls, Dawn Langstroth (Anne's daughter) and a previously recorded Dusty Springfield track with Anne.

*SHELBY LYNNE 'JUST A LITTLE LOVIN'' OUT FEB 5th, 2008 ON LOST HIGHWAY

Lynne explains how she chose Ramone for this homage to country legend Dusty Springfield, "I needed someone who would understand that these songs stand the test of time, and that Dusty Springfield is timeless.... Then one afternoon [my manager] Betty mentioned the guy who would understand me. He would allow me more room in the studio, and not just being the girl singer. He would choose the right band. So, I picked up the phone and called Phil Ramone."

*2008 MUSICARES PERSON OF THE YEAR HONORING ARETHA FRANKLIN FEB 8th, 2008

Ramone is currently putting together an all-star lineup for this anticipated and prestigious annual event held in Los Angeles two days before the GRAMMY Awards. Honoring the seventeen-time GRAMMY-winning recording artists Aretha Franklin is sure to produce a regal line up.

Richie Havens on Tour This Winter

photos courtesy of Madison House- for the Grateful Web

It has been since 2004 that Grace of the Sun was released. Now, Richie Havens is at it again, making finishing touches on his 27th album.  Recorded last month at Sear Sound Recording in NYC, Nobody Left to Crown will be released in Europe this fall on Polydor Records. The U.S. release date and label imprint will be announced soon.  Special guests on Nobody Left to Crown include Derek Trucks and Harry Manx. For more information regarding Richie's new album release, visit Brightcove.tv

Richie Havens first emerged from New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 60's, and in 1969 inspired and electrified an audience of over half a million with his legendary three hour opening performance at Woodstock.

Four decades later Richie Havens remains one of the most recognizable voices and universal lyricists in popular music.  A truly timeless performer, and a man before his time, today this Brooklyn Native celebrates the reissue of two album classics (Stonehenge and Wishing Well) by Sony RED.

Haven's recently released his 26th album, Grace of the Sun, on his own Stormy Forest record label.  A testament to Havens' continued evolution as an artist, Grace of the Sun is being hailed as one of his most worldly and relevant albums to date. Billboard says, "…this acoustic soul giant truly seems to be getting more inspiring and graceful with age," and Guitar Player echoes, "…as vibrant and purposeful as ever."

Richie Havens' live performance is as captivating as always; a passionate and inspiring display of timelessness and spirit.  His concerts include music from Grace of the Sun as well as a broad selection of songs from his extensive repertoire. On a side note, Richie's 1981 hit "Going Back to My Roots" has hit dance floors in the form of a cool Afro-beat remix by celebrated remixer/producer and club DJ Danny Krivit.

Dark Star Orchestra Kicks Off Winter Tour 2005

DSO @ Cervantes - 12/30/04- for the Grateful Web

Now that the calendar has changed to 2005 and DSO has gotten a little bit of rest, the time has come to 'keep on truckin'! Midwest, Southwest, and West Coast: get ready for some DSO.

The band takes the U.S. by storm in January and February offering performances in every one of the time zones. A handful of multiple night stands take place in Austin at La Zona Rosa for two nights, three nights in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall, and another two night stand at Portland's Crystal Ballroom.

The Winter Tour, kicking off in St. Louis (home to DSO drummers Rob and Dino), winds through ten states and brings the band to such hallowed rooms at the Great Amercian Music Hall, where a band called the Grateful Dead offered a quality performance in August of 1975

On Thursday, February 17, a non-DSO show day in the Bay Area, the members of Dark Star Orchestra will be joining David Gans for The Invitational at the  Sweetwater Saloon in Mill Valley, CA. It is an intimate venue and sure to be an interesting time with other special guests including Henry Kaiser and Eric Thompson. This show begins at 8:30 PM.

DSO has also announced numerous dates for theS pring Tour which begins in Colorado at the end of March then brings them back to the East Coast including an early festival season performance at the Wanee Festival in Florida with the Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule and many other acts.

More Spring Tour dates will be added in the forthcoming weeks. Check out the website for the complete, up to date information.

All Winter Tour shows are on sale now through:

As you may be aware, DSO is drawing national attention with their true-to-life performances. Rolling Stone praises "Dark Star Orchestra's fanatical attention to detail. "USA Today says DSO is "channeling the Dead" and the Washington Post declares them "the hottest Grateful Dead tribute act going Dallas Morning Newsaffirms DSO is "the next best thing to being there", the Denver Post describes Dark Star Orchestra as "a perfection-oriented practitioner of homage" and the Associated Pressnotes that DSO "takes its act to a level of detail that befits a rock band famous for its fanatical following."

Check out Glide Magazine's show review of the December 12 show at the New Higher Ground in Burlington, VT.  Here's a snippet:

"Seeing these guys made me shake my head quite a few times and rub my eyes to be sure that I really wasn't seeing the Dead back in the day. I was immediately pulled in from the first notes and really enjoyed the night thoroughly always feeling at home with what they were playing. To call these guys a cover band would be just plain wrong, they are more like mystical channelers plugged into the source and not letting go!"
