String Cheese Incident releases Winter Carnival 2011

The String Cheese Incident announces the digital release of Winter Carnival 2011, a live, 21-track compilation of songs culled from the band’s recent Winter Carnival run at Colorado’s brand new 1STBANK Center. Available exclusively at iTunes beginning May 24, 2011, Winter Carnival 2011 catches all of the energy and excitement from this epic run of hometown shows.

Four years had gone by since the last "Winter Carnival", The String Cheese Incident's annual celebration of ski slopes, music, Mardi Gras, and the Winter/Spring Solstice. From humble beginnings in Boulder in 1999, through seven years at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium, the band's annual Winter Carnival run always offered up a chance to welcome SCI’s musical heroes, as well as a few emerging favorites, to share the stage. Guest highlights over the years are numerous, including Little Feat, Bruce Hornsby, Del McCoury Band, Warren Haynes, Los Lobos, The Funky Meters, Olatunji, Dr. John, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe - and the list goes on and on.

Picking back up the tradition, for Winter Carnival 2011 the band welcomed OTT, JD Crowe and the New South, and Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk to join them on stage at the celebration’s new home, the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado. A brand new venue just outside of the band's hometown of Boulder, The String Cheese Incident had played there only once before – hosting the now-legendary “Fourmile Canyon Revival” benefit concert. Now, it was time for SCI to lay down roots at this venue that would run deep. And indeed the 1STBANK Center proved to be a natural fit for this epic run of "Incidents."

Check out Grateful Web's review of the Fourmile Canyon Revival.

Swallow Hill Music Announces 5th Annual Rootsfest

Swallow Hill Music’s Rootsfest returns for its 5th annual celebration of roots music featuring quintessential folk musicians David Crosby & Graham Nash on Saturday, April 9th at Denver’s historic Paramount Theatre.

Presented by 97.3 KBCO, this year’s Rootsfest will also feature performances by local legends Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore, as well Anaïs Mitchell.

For over thirty years, Swallow Hill Music has provided a place to celebrate music that is rarely heard elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. The Denver-based organization, serving as a unique source for roots, folk and acoustic music, is one of the largest nonprofit institutions of its kind in the United States. In 2010, the organization served more than 100,000 people through its concert, school and outreach programming. In addition to the annual Rootsfest and a slew of events year-round at Swallow Hill Music’s three onsite venues, it also books the highly regarded summer music series at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Look for the 2011 Botanic Gardens summer schedule to be announced soon.

But first up, singer-songwriters David Crosby and Graham Nash will headline the 5th annual Rootsfest. On tour this spring throughout the U.S. but only in Colorado for this one show, their legendary harmonies will be accompanied on the road by an ace-backing band featuring James Raymond (keyboards), Dean Parks (guitar), Kevin McCormick (bass), and Steve DiStanislao (drums).

The show will mix acoustic and plugged-in performances. "Touring with a full band gives us the opportunity to do selections from our catalogue that Graham and I haven't performed live together before," says Crosby. "We will also be introducing some brand new songs we've written, that have never been heard onstage or on record."

Crosby and Nash are also launching their own record label, Blue Castle Records, with the first-ever digital and vinyl editions of the live album Another Stoney Evening, recorded forty years ago, in 1971 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. "This album represents the very beginning of our musical relationship as a duo," says Nash. "Whatever David and I do well together, it's wonderful that we're still doing it well. For the upcoming tour, with a rock 'n roll band, we've gotten fantastic advance response. It's exciting to be bringing this great new show to people."

Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore met at the legendary Denver Folklore Center, married, had some kids, played in some bands and now have released their first studio cd as a duo, Saints & Sinners. Released in September, five-star reviews are starting to come in calling this a “landmark recording of Americana music” (Driftwood Magazine) and “a high water mark for the pair” (thebluegrassspecial.com). Acoustic Music says this about the cd : “Miss it at your peril.”

Anaïs Mitchell, a rare musician who is equally comfortable wielding an acoustic guitar alone onstage, sharing a disc’s worth of alt-country duets, or scripting a vast operatic journey into the underworld, rounds out the 2011 Rootsfest celebration. Praised as “a songwriter of startling clarity and depth,” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Mitchell “weaves her stories into an effortlessly beautiful and cohesive tapestry with the skill of an artisan’s carpenter, showing no seams.”

A Hot Rize Halloween at the Boulder Theater

Hot Rize has marked 32 years in bluegrass, keeping its legend growing by delivering first-class music and entertainment as only it can. The band rose to prominence in the early 80's, appearing frequently on such national broadcasts as "A Prairie Home Companion", Austin City Limits, and on The Nashville Network. Their stage show gained renown, featuring their soulful and distinctive bluegrass combined with their wacky but musically deft "alter-ego" country swing band, Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. The group performed in almost every state, as well as Europe, Japan, and Australia.

The traditional-yet-progressive foursome started in January, 1978, based in Colorado and naming itself after the secret ingredient of Martha White self-rising flour, the product Flatt & Scruggs promoted in the 50s and 60s. With national touring and multiple #1 bluegrass radio hits Hot Rize became a premier attraction and stylistic trend-setter. In 1990, the band was feted as Entertainer of the Year by IBMA at its first annual Awards Show. Throughout the 1990s, the group continued to perform occasionally for a loyal and growing fan base.

Following the untimely passing of original member Charles Sawtelle in 1999, the group reorganized in 2002 with Nashville studio ace/multiple Grammy-winner Bryan Sutton on guitar, and has continued to play selected shows each year, delivering its signature sound to a new generation of followers. Hot Rize has remained a top attraction in bluegrass, well into its fourth decade. In 2009, the band was selected to co-host the 20th annual IBMA Awards Show. The year 2010 will see increased activity, including major festivals and new studio recordings. More Info / Buy Tickets

HAAM Benefit Day 2010 The Best Ever

The 5th Annual HAAM Benefit Day, held on Tuesday, September 21, brought in the largest amount of funds ever raised for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, its member-musicians and the healthcare service programs they participate in: $195,000, the organization reported today.

It was a record-breaking day all around, with the largest number of Austin area businesses making a donation or pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds — more than 200 — and the most musical performances (more than 140) heard on any HAAM Benefit Day.

“We at HAAM are incredibly pleased with the response to the fifth HAAM Benefit Day,” said Keith Carmichael, HAAM Benefit Day 2010 Committee chairman. “The number of businesses and the number of entertainers participating — not to mention the amount of funds raised, the largest ever — shows us how much this city and the people in it appreciate live music and what this organization is doing to make sure it flourishes.”

In addition to acknowledging Whole Foods Market for its generosity in serving for five consecutive years as HAAM Benefit Day presenting sponsor, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians is grateful for the tens of thousands of dollars donated not only by Whole Foods Market but also by C3 Presents and South by Southwest® over the years of HAAM Benefit Day.
It also recognizes Texas Heritage Songwriters Association for its donation that matched the contribution of the Austin community on September 21 as residents ate out, shopped and donated on behalf of their favorite music-makers.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians also announced today the date for the 6th Annual HAAM Benefit Day: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, when business, the music community and residents will again unite to keep music alive and well in Austin.
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides access to affordable healthcare services to Austin’s low-income, uninsured working musicians with a focus on prevention and wellness. Since HAAM’s 2005 start, more than 2,200 of the city’s battalion of hard-working musicians have joined and gained access to regular, cost-effective healthcare services. Medical, dental, mental, hearing and vision health services are provided by Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Foundation, The SIMS Foundation, Estes Audiology and Prevent Blindness Texas. HAAM’s annual Corporate Battle of the Bands and HAAM Benefit Day have become signature events behind a great cause: maintaining the health of the musicians who help make Austin such an enviable place to live and work.
