Country Mice Announce Summer Tour Dates

What does Country Mice front-man Jason Rueger have in common with less than 300 people in the US?  Growing up in Beattie, that’s ruralest of rural Kansas. On a farm of course, that was passed down through three generations of his family and old enough to be on the Pony Express route. “Family, friends, and working the land gave us a good wholesome life”.
Walking dirt road paths, working and living off the land, squinting his eyes at the sun, but with headphones on, it is not the bucolic atmosphere but music that most inspires him.  At an early age, Rueger sets his sights for something different than the surrounding dirt and milo that stung his eyes and cut his hands.
Breaking away from the close-knit ties of friends and family, Rueger moves east, not to Nashville, where you might expect a country boy to venture, but to Brooklyn.  It doesn’t take long to hook up with fellow Midwest transplants Ben Bullington (guitar) and Kurt Kuehn (drums) as they all quickly band together, finding comfort in their shared sense of displacement.  Eventually, as the trio becomes more assimilated to their new surroundings, they recruit upstate New Yorker Mike Feldman (bass).
As Country Mice, they rally together to craft apocalyptic ballads through amplifier hazes that thicken into funnel clouds, drums that stomp-clap sedately before the storm peaks, and bass tones that thicken the bloodstream. Rueger draws on his small town rearing with sophistication beyond the ordinarily romantic and reductive Americana troubadour, and his songwriting is anything but dime a dozen.
Strong traces of Neil Young and Wilco are mixed into modern experimental guitar sounds that any fan of mid-90’s Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. will love. Living and gigging in Brooklyn, Country Mice begin to fully develop their sound, which becomes by influenced the other hardworking bands of Brooklyn's fast-paced scene.
Their debut album Twister is out now.It's a record that sonically chisels through the calloused shell of glossy rock & roll to find the dissonant live wire beneath and play it for all its worth. It tells a tale of strained memory: the hardships, joys, and love of growing up in a small town in the Midwest, with the hopes and dreams of traveling the world – a record for every kid seeing the big world from his small bedroom window.

The People’s Key – the band’s seventh studio album – is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2077’s acclaimed Cassadage.  Since 2006 the once revolving cast of Bright Eyes players has settled around permanent members Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott, with additional musicians joining them in the studio and on tour.  Fully realized and bursting with charisma, The People’s Key is an assured and accomplished album, artfully arranged and filled with the engaging and mesmeric songwriting for which Conor is renowned.

Bright Eyes’ success snowballed in early 2005 when the simultaneous release of the sister albums “I’m Wide Awake,” “It’s Morning and Digital Ash In A Digital Urn” saw the Nebraskans hurled into the limelight and the Billboard Charts.  To say that the band became a househole name would be an overstatement but for a few months they seemed ubiquitous; from magazine covers to late night talk shows, they were name-checked by everyone from sports casters to country stars.  Conor Oberst has spent much of the last few years recording and touring with friends and musicinas, The Mystic Valley Band, as well as releasing a highly acclaimed album and tour as part of the so called indie supergroup Monsters of Folk.

Panther Style "¡Emergencia!" + June 11th Chicago Record Release Show!

May 31, 2011 brings the highly anticipated debut release from Chicago rock band, Panther Style. The "¡Emergencia!" LP will be available on 180 gram vinyl, digital and CD formats, all including a cover of "Blind Eyes Open" by The Posies.

This project of heavy tasty pop was started by Chicago rock veterans Jeanne McClure, Al Rodis, Dan Lutger, & Melissa Koehl (Mary Tyler Morphine, Siderunners, Dyslexic Apaches, Reptoids) out of a mutual desire to make some beautifully catchy songs that rocked. Drawing influences from The Posies, Big Star, New Order, and U2, along with the seductive feel of in-your- face screaming tube amps and chest pounding bass from The Cult, Fugazi and Failure, their sound brings a refreshing blend of sweet melodies and thick distorted guitars all held together with an air-tight driving rhythm.

"¡Emergencia!" was recorded at B-Side Audio in Chicago with Neal Ostrovsky on a 16-track analog tape machine to capture the warm tones and genuine feel of the band's live sound. All of the music was recorded live with everyone in the same room. It was mastered with Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. "Blind Eyes Open" was also released on the "Beautiful Escape" Posies cover compilation, by Burning Sky Records.

Soon after the formation of Panther Style, Dan and Melissa got hitched. Soon afterwards Dan and Jeanne jumped in to complete the rhythm section of Melissa's other established project, Reptoids. They brought a commanding presence to match Reptoids progression to a heavier sound and will be releasing the "Invasion" EP in the Summer of 2011.

First Aid Kit Head Into The Studio With Producer Mike Mogis

First Aid Kid - the Swedish duo of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg - are currently recording with acclaimed producer Mike Mogis at his ARC Studios in Omaha, NE.They'll spend the next month working on the follow-up to their highly praised debut album, The Big Black & The Blue, released last year on Wichita Recordings. In addition to being known as a member of Bright Eyes and Monsters Of Folk, Mogis is a renowned producer who has worked with artists including The Concretes, Cursive, Lightspeed Champion, Rilo Kiley, Sea Wolf, and Pete Yorn, among many others.

"We met Mike at Austin City Limits last year. He saw our show there and we got talking about recording an album together," said Klara and Johanna. "Bright Eyes was the band that got us inspired to start making music, so working with Mike is quite surreal for us. We feel honored. So far things are going really well and we believe we're in the process of creating something very special. This truly is a dream come true."

First Aid Kit broke out last year with the release of The Big Black & The Blue, garnering praise from AOL Music's Spinner blog, NPR's All Songs Considered, Nylon, and SPIN ('Breaking Out' artist), among others, and earning spots on HearYa, Nylon, and PasteMagazine.com's 'Best of 2010' lists. The year proved to be one of 'firsts' for the young band, who were only 17 (Klara) and 19-years old (Johanna) at the time of the album's release.

March 2010 saw First Aid Kit perform in the US for the first time at SXSW, which they followed with their first stateside headlining tour in June that included a sold-out stop at New York's Mercury Lounge. In September, they toured Australia and released a 7-inch single for album standout "Ghost Town," which featured a spectral cover of Fever Ray's "When I Grow Up" as a B-side in tribute to mentor Karin Dreijer Andersson (Fever Ray, The Knife), whose label Rabid released their debut EP Drunken Trees in 2008. First Aid Kit returned to tour the US again in October, with stops at the Austin City Limits festival and the CMJ Music Marathon (featuring a second sold-out NYC show at Joe's Pub).

The band rang in 2011 with the January release of a Third Man Records Blue Series 7-inch that featured covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and the classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too" (a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version), recorded with Jack White at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, TN.

The Mynabirds Play With/Open For Bright Eyes

While front woman Laura Burhenn has been touring as a member of Bright Eyes, the Mynabirds have been anything but quiet. Last month they opened a string of shows for Bright Eyes, adding Richard Swift, producer of their 2010 release What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood, to the band's line-up. Photographer/filmmaker Shervin Lainez was on hand to capture some great behind-the-scenes footage of the tour and set it to WWLITFWGITF's "LA Rain". Mini tour documentary, music video -- call it what you like. You can watch it in all its black and white glory HERE.

If you're itching for some new Mynabirds material, keep your eyes and ears open. Laura's hard at work on new songs, even in the midst of the busy Bright Eyes touring schedule. This September, the Mynabirds will meet up with Richard Swift again in Oregon to record their second album. And they couldn't be happier.

Cat’s Eyes Announce US Tour Dates

As the frontman for British psychedelic-rockers the Horrors, Faris Badwan and his bandmates took a major stylistic leap between the band’s first and second albums, essentially reinventing themselves in the process.  In the same spirit, Badwan has transformed himself creatively once again with his new duo, Cat’s Eyes.  The project is a partnership between him and Rachel Zeffira, a Canadian opera soprano and classical multi-instrumentalist based in London.

The group’s first ever live appearance took place in December, amid some secrecy, at St Peter’s in the Vatican, where they performed a reworked version of their song “I Knew It Was Over” during an afternoon mass attended by several high-ranking cardinals. Continuing to make each of their live shows a truly special experience, Cat’s Eyes have decided to do only three US dates – so don’t miss them if you’re in the area!

In the collision of the two very separate worlds of Badwan and Zeffira, something magical has come into being. Cat’s Eyes eponymous debut album (May 3rd; Cooperative Music USA/Downtown Records) is a romantic pop masterpiece fit to dine at the same table as mid-’60s productions by Phil Spector, Joe Meek or Shadow Morton, but with a fiercely modern, experimental premise, which constantly leaves you wondering just what you’re listening to, and how on earth it was created.

The duo’s album was recorded at RealWorld studios near Bath with producer Steve Osborne. All Cat’s Eyes artwork is designed and photographed by Chris Cunningham, director of iconic videos for Aphex Twin (“Windowlicker”; “Come to Daddy”) and Bjork (“All is Full of Love.”)

Pretty Lights Music, the digital label from Pretty Lights’ Derek Vincent Smith, is launching a new website, and dropping two new EPs today. The purpose of the label and its innovative model is to supply his fans, and fans of electronic music at large, with the dopest beats from the freshest producers. The EPs are offered as free downloads with the option to donate for exactly that reason- releasing good music to as many listeners as possible is our priority for PLM.

Break Science’s new EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, and Paper Diamond’s debut EP Levitate both went up today. Also available on the site is the debut record from Michal Menert, Dreaming Of A Bigger Life, which went up in May 2010.

Kids of Widney High Release Full-Length Documentary

“After I take over the world, I want to learn how to play the bass,” says effervescent, long-time Kids of Widney High member Cain Fonseca. One of nine singer/songwriters, Cain is a young adult from East LA with developmental disabilities who—along with the rest of the Kids—writes, records, and performs his own unique brand of rock music.

Begun in 1988 at special-education high school Joseph P. Widney High, the Kids grew out of an adaptive songwriting class that is still in operation today and continues to churn out specialized musicians and singers, some of whom have formed their own permutation of “Kids of Widney High”-esque bands.

Having in the past been compared to the likes of: Daniel Johnston, Wesley Willis, Langley Schools Music Project, and Florence Foster Jenkins, the Kids of Widney High have been covered in both concert performances and on album recordings by such hot bands as: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Aquabats, and Osaka Popstar (comprised of members of: the Ramones, the Misfits, and Black Flag). They also boast a dedicated fanbase that includes everyone from Marilyn Manson and Fiona Apple to actor James Garner and filmmaker Spike Jonze. Playing the LA leg of the Warped Tour some years back, a prominent record producer handed to the Kids their first album—made by an earlier lineup of members—that had at one time been owned by Kurt Cobain.

In the past, the Kids have worked with musical luminaries Jackson Browne (who assisted them with the recording of the second of four albums they have out to date), Mr. Bungle/Faith No More frontman Mike Patton (who took them on their first tour along with Bungle, and who put out a Kids album on indie pioneering label Ipecac), and various producers/writers from South Park who worked with the Kids and a similar group, MTV’s How’s Your News, on a television pilot some years back. The Kids were also prominently featured in comedic hit film The Ringer starring Johnny Knoxville and Katherine Heigl.

Having now broadened their artistic endeavors to encapsulate: fine art, films, music videos, short documentaries of their own, creative writings, poetry, and fashion designs, the Kids decided upon taking their first headlining, full-length tour up the West Coast (from Los Angeles to Seattle and back) two summers ago. Along the way, the Kids played a number of gigs at high-profile venues, made time for local print/online media syndicates and radio shows, exhibited their artwork and short films, and read their writings (including one oration at Beat epicenter City Lights in San Francisco).

Sponsored in part by Sony PlayStation, this tour was also an opportunity for the majority of Kids members—all of whom come from financially challenged backgrounds—to see a world outside of the city of Los Angeles. But, as Kids member (and self-proclaimed “class clown”) Peewee proudly intones, “We’re not here to tell a sob story. No! We’re having fun. Are you having fun?”

Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a vibrant, life-affirming, funny, and wholly compassionate film that explores just what happens when a specialized group of artists such as the Kids of Widney High finally take to the road as they visit new cities and peoples, teaching their fans about the changing world of the disabled community at large. Along the way, the Kids fight, they love, they grow apart and together, they party—as do all raucous rock bands on such rapid-fire tours!—and come out the other end, as Kids frontman Shelly Goodhope says of himself, “A better man.”

Supplemented by over ten years of footage from various venues, fans, groupies, and the Kids themselves, Act Your Age is also an incredibly intimate portrait of a subculture that has been for far too long misunderstood and, ultimately, disenfranchised in the eyes of the general mainstream public.

Comparable to such independent mainstay music documentaries as: Dig!, End of the Century, and Fugazi’s Instrument, Act Your Age: The Kids of Widney High Story is a poignant and often funny look at a group of artists who are ready to challenge conventional notions about persons with disabilities and contemporary art in America today.

It’s time for everyone to see the world through the eyes of a Kid!
