DJ Shadow: Something to be Thankful for in Denver

On November 21, DJ Shadow (Josh Davis) is bringing his world famous mixing chops to the Ogden Theater in Denver. Live from Shadowsphere, it is the beginning of an easy work week for most people, and the DJ plans to start the week off right with guest Pigeon John at 8 pm.

DJ Shadow is widely considered as a prominent figure in the development of experimental and instrumental hip hop. His debut album Endtroducing got him on the map, and also in the Guiness Book of World Records for the “First Completely Sampled Album” in 2001. Shadow is also a producer, and has produced tracks for the Mo’ Wax team featuring the likes of Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Richard Ashcroft (the Verve), and Mike D (Beastie Boys). After releasing several more successful albums with elite rappers such as: Keak Da Sneak, E-40, and Q-Tip (Tribe Called Quest) and a David Letterman performance, Shadow opened his own web store www.showDJShadow.com for fans to get his freshest tracks. Last year, Shadow became involved in the video game industry with DJ Hero, which features Shadow as a playable character and several of his tracks. While currently working on his new album, which he calls a “return to form,” during a gig in Antwerp this summer, he stated that it’s not quite ready yet, but he will keep working on it to have it ready for future tours.

Fans can be getting the first look at his new projects. Whether you get your tickets through Ticketmaster, at Twist & Shout in Denver, or at the venue itself, this will be a gig that’s not to be missed. As always, you can buy tickets, add comments, and upload photos at the DJShadow.com/Tour show pages, and on the DJ Shadow iPhone App. Just click on the show you are attending (or the show you plan to attend). 30 years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and incredible ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know the band can move from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only on stage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

His recent release, titled Then There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Danielle Ate the Sandwich | Gothic Theater

Before attending Danielle Ate the Sandwich at the Gothic Theater on October 8th I was unsure as to what kind of sandwich exactly she may have eaten. However, after speaking to Danielle before her show and watching her exuberant performance I was certain said sandwich must be chock full of wit, talent and brilliance.

Bop Skizzum's New EP "Push" Now Available

Looking for a new album that inspires you to get up and get down? The 2010 Bop Skizzum release Push is now available on-line and ready for mass consumption. This short and sweet EP is pumping with ballsy rock adrenaline, singable hooks and danceable beats. It's a tasty cocktail of musical mojo that somehow manages to be both squeaky clean and grimy, laced with an addictive honey-pop sensibility that will cause it to linger in your rotation and make you crave more of what this delicious funk trio is dishing out.

Since it's founding more than ten years ago Bop Skizzum has always taken pleasure in concocting songs that enable you to blow off some steam by getting on the floor and burning it up. Screaming horn lines, block-rocking beats, and lyrics squarely stamped with Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" seal of approval all point to one thing: Bop Skizzum's mission is to make you dance.

Comprised of Andy "ROK" Guerrero, Serafin Sanchez, Erin Jo Harris, and a rotating cast of the best musicians known to science, Bop Skizzum is all about making booty-shaking music in accordance with the founding fathers and mothers of funk. From the sweat-inducing grooves of James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone, the visionary jazz-soaked R&B of Stevie Wonder, the explosive pop of Prince and Michael Jackson, to the modern retro soul of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Janelle Monáe. Bop Skizzum is following in these big footsteps to get your motor running any and every way it knows how.

Bop Skizzum was formed in 2000 by funk-lovers Andy "ROK", best known as the founding member and guitarist from the socio-political hip-hop rock group Flobots, and his friend, saxophone wielding sex symbol Serafin Sanchez who graduated from The University of Colorado at Boulder with a master's degree in Jazz music. NYU-trained soul-singing bombshell Erin Jo Harris was invited by ROK and Sanchez to join the duo in late 2009, and the freshly-minted trio started churning out songs like hot cakes. They enlisted the most bad-ass rhythm and brass sections available: tone master Chris Harris on bass and beat savant Tohbias Juniel on drums, along with two-man trumpet power punch Joe Ferrone and John Lake, and all headed deep into the studio to unearth their new signature sound.

Push emerged at the famed Blasting Room Studios in northern Colorado under the supervision of award-winning master engineers Jason Livermore and Andrew Berlin, best known for their work with gold-record-selling rock bands like Rise Against and cult favorite bands like NOFX and Alkaline Trio, to name a few. The final result is a meaty slab of party-starting funk & roll sliced and diced in the tradition of the original founders of funk, served up with a colossal helping of cojones grandes. The five-song Push EP was released to a score of hungry fans in May 2010, garnering good reviews and grabbing the attention of the Denver music scene like never before.

From the roaring guitar and blaring brass of "Prove It To You" to the soaring, soul-crushing vocals of their sole ballad, "What I Wanna Hear", to the heart-thumping bass and bone-breaking beats of the title track, Push is guaranteed to get anyone with an ounce of soul and a pulse shaking their tail feathers and banging their heads.

The new album is now available for download on iTunes, Amazon, emusic and all other on-line outlets as well as on www.bopskizzum.com. Be on the lookout for updates on the band including concert appearances along with the band's video segments outlining their mission to save the funk at www.savethefunk.org.

Kinetix Announces New Album And Summer Tour Appearances

Denver, Colorado rockers Kinetix continue to build upon their DIY success of the previous five years, having spent 2009 logging more than 10,000+ miles criss-crossing the country setting concert hall and music festival audiences on fire with their soul-powered rock and roll. Now in 2010, the band has rededicated themselves to the studio and have produced their finest album to date. Uniting soaring vocal harmonies, muscular guitar riffs, deep bass, R&B flavored electronic organ drenched in reverb, a tireless work ethic and extreme attention to detail on the production of both their new album and live shows, Kinetix is set to continue assembling an army of intensely loyal fans from coast to coast.

With a band name derived in part from motion and energy, Kinetix's rise from their humble Denver roots into a popular nationally touring band has been nothing short of spectacular. Formed by a group of college buddies at Lamont School of Music at Denver University, Kinetix was originally merely a vehicle to blow off steam and play music at weekend hangouts. Their popularity during those early days became a phenomenon that quickly outgrew the rowdy house parties where the band cut their teeth.

Within two years of forming, minus any street team, radio play or mainstream media attention, Kinetix was easily selling out theatres in their hometown based solely on word of mouth. The shows translated to thousands of song downloads and album sales of their debut and sophomore album releases. And sure enough that word-of-mouth buzz spread nationwide, quickly racking up sold out shows in numerous cities far away from the band's Denver base.

The eleven tracks of Let Me In were produced by Andy Guerrero of the Flobots and engineered and mixed by Jason Livermore at the legendary rock and roll Blasting Room Studios. The new album builds upon the band's reputation as a live tour de force, but now heralds the rock quintet as studio musicians capable of creating an album worthy and almost certainly destined for mainstream radio play. Early listens of the new Kinetix album have garnered praise among fans and industry insiders alike as a more mature continuation of the keyboard and guitar driven sound Kinetix has always been known for.

While previous album efforts showcased the band's excellent musicianship, the new album plays up the addition of more emotionally insightful lyrical and vocal development, most notably heard on "Wishing Well" and "To See You Go". Other standout album tracks such as "Fighting For" showcase massive guitar riffs layered atop head-bobbing hard rock grooves so fat you could walk on them, while the decidedly up-tempo pop flavored "Anything", "Let Me In" and "Spinning Out" bring to the forefront the band's striking vocal harmonies, rhythm and blues flavored chord progressions, and deft keyboard work. Best of all, Let Me In showcases an emotional journey of peaks, valleys, that culminate in the stellar closing track "Out Of My Head", which showcases all of the musical elements that have been used by fans and the press alike to describe Kinetix as one of the best up and coming bands in the country.

Denver-Based Guitarist Grant Gordy To Release Debut Album May 11

Grant Gordy, the Denver-based guitar player whose lifelong study of music, from Bill Evans to The Beatles and beyond, has informed his own writing and arranging, will release his self-titled debut album on May 11.

“[He] belongs to the new elite family of American acoustic practitioners who are pushing the ever-expanding envelope of a musical frontier … Bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, classical and even ‘dawg’ are all audible influences in Grant’s musical vision,” says David “Dawg” Grisman, whose David Grisman Quintet Gordy subbed in and would ultimately join as guitarist. “[His] guitar stylings offer a rare blend of flat-picking virtuosity, jazz exploration and classical sensibility …”

“Pterodactyl,” “Grapes” and “Lila” are just three of the compositions on the new CD, which also includes Gordy’s “Blues to Dawg” that he invited Grisman to contribute his signature mandolin playing to. Each song in the collection exemplifies Gordy’s spirit of adventure and sense of self.

Gordy describes himself: “At heart, I'm really an improviser; that's what very first drew me to playing music — the idea that you can make things up as you go along — but I'm also very interested in composition. I like the idea of a group of musicians having as much room and freedom to explore and improvise as they want, but within a context of a compelling arrangement that can be exciting for, and draws in, the listener.”

Gordy’s touring behind the release include:

Friday, June 11, KRFC Radio-Fort Collins, “Live at Lunch” show
Saturday, June 12, Brewgrass Festival, South Pearl Street, Denver
Saturday, June 12, Little Church in the Pines, 536 Gold Run Road, Salina

The Everyone Orchestra Performs in Colorado

The Everyone Orchestra embarks on a run of Colorado shows at the end of May including a stop in Fort Collins and three performances in Denver from May 20th – May 23rd. This rendition of the project features a stellar line up of nationally renowned talent including Steve Kimock (SKB, Zero), Kyle Hollingsworth (SCI), Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Dave Watts (The Motet), Jamie Janover (Zilla), Garrett Sayers (The Motet), Jamie Masefield (Jazz Mandolin Project) and YOU.

How do you fit into the Everyone Orchestra? The fully improvised performance is the brainchild of founder Matt Butler, who incorporates the skill set of the assembled all-star line up with the voices and sounds of the audience for a unique and fun musical experience.

Literally an orchestra where everyone in the room takes part, the Everyone Orchestra brings together a form of musical improvisation that is rarely accomplished to this degree. While the band actually only consists of one key player – conductor Matt Butler – each show features a rotating cast of up to a dozen players on any given night. Drawing on the wealth of talent local to the area he visits, or those performing at a festival, the concept lures local and national players who are often performing for the first time together and the audience of course, is performing right along.

The four-night traveling event will kick off at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on May 20th and will continue to Quixotes True Blue (formerly Owsleys) on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22nd. The Sunday, May 23rd performance is billed as a happy hour show featuring an acoustic set (minus Hollingsworth), and with other special guests yet to be announced.

The locally based organization, Conscious Alliance, will also be hosting a food drive, benefiting the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. All patrons that donate 10 non-perishable food items will receive a free limited- edition Everyone Orchestra 2010 Colorado Tour poster created by the very special artist, Ryan Karrigant. Donations can be made with Conscious Alliance representatives at the front entrance of each venue.

Advance tickets for the Denver performance are on sale now at www.quixotes.com and for more information about the event and line up check out Everyone Orchestra.
