EOTO: A Vicious Bass Onslaught

Dubstep has arrived. It's in the clubs. It's on TV, insidiously creeping into commercials and terrorizing radio waves around the world; from Berlin to New York City and everywhere in between, Dubstep is a force to be reckoned with. The once-underground phenomenon crossed the pond and went mainstream. Thanks to its growing popularity, amateur producers just flip on their low frequency oscillators and take a nap. Drab and derivative, the genre has been co-opted by DJs simply regurgitating the work of others. There is one act, though, that has been leading the way and setting the standard for live performance Dubstep/Electro/House for over five relentless years. One force that does it live.

The cyber-kinetic bass juggernaut EOTO is Dubstep's savior and innovator. Two twisted demons blasting razor-bass and shrapnel beats from coast to coast and beyond. Snarling and brutal, these psy-dub beat sorcerers create Dubstep from the ground up, night after night, using only real instruments and their sonic wizardry. No pre-programmed loops, no heavy samples snatched from other producers, Jason Hann and Michael Travis bring Dubstep to life in real time, and push the movement into unexplored territories. Their soul-shattering brand of lazerstep is as mesmerizing as it is evil.

Those who haven't been exposed to the two-headed, buzzsaw-juggling behemoth best check their schedules. EOTO is in the process of throwing down an unprecedented 60 performances in 64 nights. There's no break, there's no solace, just a vicious bass onslaught from the South to the Rocky Mountains to the West Coast, and back across the Midwest. And that's before festival season even kicks off. Beginning with Summer Camp, and running through Wakarusa, The Big Up, and Nateva in August, EOTO is already charting its course of summer destruction. You can bet they're planning something perverse and especially warped for the season's most anticipated gathering of subsonic junkies: Sonic Bloom Festival.

There is no stopping EOTO from spreading a near lethal dose of dance music to the masses. The duo just unleashed a FREE 10-track sampler from their 2011 Colorado tour on SoundCloud and is also expected to release the third rendition of their annual live tour compliation called "K-Turns and U-Turns" on May 17th (Album Art). The 39-song-collection was recorded live in 2010 with each disc meticulously mixed to flow like a live show.

To educate and prepare the unwitting masses for their awesome destructive power, EOTO just wrapped up filming for their soon to be released live DVD. Soon, the world will be able to witness these two dark ninjas maneuvering in precise symbiosis through technology, slaying crowds in high definition, and will understand that Travis and Hann have been, and always will be, true pioneers of Dubstep. Their debut concert DVD will capture their entirely original, completely improvised sonic assault. Beware of the release date, to be announced this summer.

Jake Shimabukuro Believes Music is Good Medicine

"If everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place." -Jake Shimabukuro

Jake Shimabukuro is recognized as one of the world's most exciting and innovative ukulele players and composers, having "given the ukulele a new respect altogether" (All Music Guide), as he demonstrates on his forthcoming album ‘Peace Love Ukulele,' out January 4, 2011 on Hitchhike Records.

But as his career continues to blossom, Shimabukuro, a Hawaiian, is also busy giving back to his island community, using the ukulele as his tool. He’s currently the head spokesperson for Music is Good Medicine (MIGM), a living-healthy community program that tours schools, hospitals and senior centers around Hawaii and on the US mainland, as well as in Guam, Saipan and Japan.



Shimabukuro’s belief that music is good medicine goes all the way back to his childhood. "Ever since my mother first put a ukulele in my hands at the age of four," he says, "this magical instrument has been a positive force in my life – helping to steer me away from drugs, violence and other negative influences. It fueled my passion for music, which has helped me to develop in mind, body and spirit."

He points to the therapeutic, stress-reducing benefits of playing music and says the ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn, as well as one of the most affordable. "This tiny, four-string instrument is a universe of joy and healing, with a childlike quality about it that returns us to our youth and energizes us."

Crytal Castles @ Boulder Theater | New Years Eve

Formed
in 2003 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Crystal Castles consists of
producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. They are named after the
lyrics "The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles" and "Crystal
Castles, the source of all power" both from the theme song for She-Ra's
fortress. They are known for their melancholic lo-fi sound and their
explosive live shows. Their debut album was included in NME's "Top 50
Albums of the Decade".

Crystal Castles musical style has been
described as "ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped two-dimensional
Gameboy glitches and bruising drum bombast that pierces your skull with
their sheer shrill force, burrowing deep into the brain like a fever".
The band has headlined numerous tours in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and
Australia and have also appeared at festivals around the Globe
including Ireland's Oxegen Festival, Coachella, All Points West, Leeds
Festival in England and will also take part in Australia's "Big Day
Out" 2011 Tour.

The music and live show of the Crystal Castles is not one to miss. As the band themselves say,

The Contribution: -- 'Which Way World'

When members of New Monsoon, Railroad Earth and String Cheese Incident come together to create an album the result is Roostsy Americana bliss. Contribution, an appropriate name for a group whose members have bestowed many a musical gift to the masses with their previous bands, will drop Which Way World on March 30.

An album bursting with country gumption and raw poetic flare, this debut showcases the artistic veracity and harmonious nature of some of the best musicians on today’s jam circuit. A balanced blend of old-time charm and aggressive string-heavy muscle, this collaborative effort exemplifies the razor-sharp skills of Tim Carbone (violin, vocals Railroad Earth), Jeff Miller (guitar, mandolin, vocals, New Monsoon), Phil Ferlino (keyboards, New Monsoon), Keith Moseley (bassist, the String Cheese Incident), and Jason Hann (percussion, the String Cheese Incident).

From the initial notes, “Come Around” takes off like a tumbleweed in a dust storm, moving with force, freely charting out its own territory in a sandy soundscape of earnest handclaps, vocal harmonies and a fierce web of strings. Chameleon-like in nature, this opening track captures both a mischievous apathetic side and one of comforted hope. The dichotomous lyrics of “Never mind/never mind/why?” and “Sometimes you gotta lose yourself/find yourself/come around again” play out like a fencing match of internal conflict. The track rounds things off with a whiskey soaked “I don’t care!” from Carbone.

“Time Was Only Yesterday” initially breathes saloon-singer vulnerability, and holds that vintage desire to relive the past. Unexpectedly, lyrics about a “carnival parade” are quickly met by a collage of festive circus-esque clamor. The colossal racket is spiked with the scream of brassy horns and faded shouts you would imagine escaping from the lips of a vagabond ringleader.

“Better Days” proves to be one of the most lyrically poignant tracks on the album. The need for nostalgia, once again, resurfaces. While it gets off to a mellow start, the harmonized sturdy chorus of ‘Gone gone away are better days,’ which culminates with the tinge of tambourine, stands out like a mighty oak left upright after a forest fire.

Brilliance isn’t limited to the instrumentals when you stop to absorb the momentous metaphors and similes just swimming around in the ocean of sound – “Couldn’t see the danger there/ like children scaling rocks beside the sea…”

“Fear of Nothing” hits the listener like a sun shower on a sweltering day. Cool, refreshing and unapologetic, it reigns down with honky tonk tenacity. The upbeat, electrifying piano-laden, tune exudes a sense of rock n’ roll, gospel and blues. Sprinkling a ferocious feminine energy to the mix, are the Black Swan Singers who come equipped with fierce pipes—strong enough to stir a corpse. By far the most danceable tune on the disc, it resembles a hybrid of Great America Taxi meets the Black Crowes.

‘Wind Me Up’ is more spoken then sung and comes across like a sincere monologue of someone who has grown tired of, but accustomed to, going through the motions. The accompaniments and vocals are reminiscent of something quirky country alt-rockers Wilco would create.

“Which Way World,” the title track of the album, captures a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young vibe and yet at times it sounds more like a top ten contemporary country radio hit. Slow, steady and straight up Zenful, it’s a letter to our spinning sphere inquiring bout the very nature of its direction.

“Samsara” opens with piano playing that is rapidly coated by the lush emotion-evoking violin, proving that there is nothing like strings to set a melancholic mood. Capturing a rather dark tone, it sounds like a Celtic pagan homage to the earth— “I am the sky/speak through the wind/I am a shadow/darkness within...”

Let the musical monsoon of earthy cheese-coated goodness splash full force in a downpour that will have you tossing the umbrella and caution to the wind.

Femi Kuti & the Positive Force @ Boulder Theater

Four years after the DVD Live@Shrine, Femi Kuti returns with a generous, powerful and timeless new album, continuing to explore and push back the frontiers of Afrobeat. Thirteen titles that grab your belly, your feet, your heart and your head. From the ghettos of Lagos to the palaces of corrupt politicians, Day by Day takes us through the winding roads of African paradox. Why is such a rich continent inhabited by the world's poorest people?

Day by Day is Nigeria in all of its states. We find elaborate instrumental patterns, both in their texture and in their structure ("Demo Crazy") refrains as soulful as the best old hits Curtis Mayfield hits ("Eh Oh") and hot numbers to set light to any dancefloor. His group, Positive Force, built the foundations in Lagos and, during timely visits during sessions in Paris, other artists brought their building blocks to the structure. Keziah Jones made his guitar swing on "Tell Me" and "Dem Funny," Femi's young son, Madé, also joined the adventure, participating in all the tracks on this delicious album – to be released on November 18th.

Copying note for note his Father's music has never been Femi's goal. If he accompanied Fela's musicians during his youth, he decided as early as 1986 to free himself up and create his own band. Whilst always respecting his musical heritage, Femi has refined over more than twenty years, an afrobeat with soul-jazz nuances that is entirely his own.
