Groundation's 10th Annual Bob Marley Tribute Tour

Groundation began their annual Bob Marley Tribute Tour in 2000 as a means of celebrating the life and material of a true musical prophet. Marley's impact is hard to overstate. No other musician of the 20th Century is more well known across all parts of the globe than Marley.

His music united people of all classes and creeds through its easily relatable parables of overcoming social injustices by ways of unity and love. And though his music is often associated with the downtrodden and dispossessed, for surely those were who his music was made, mainstream media outlets served notice too; Time magazine famously listed Marley's Legend as the best album of the last 100 years.

But Groundation does not simply rest on the well known hits from Marley's hugely successful 'best-of' albums. Their tribute tour differs than other bands' similar outings by exposing those people familiar with Marley's music and message to the lesser known material of his catalog. While true that the inescapable sing-alongs do occur at these tribute shows, more often than not even the most seasoned Marley aficionado will hear songs they have yet to see performed live.

Groundation has drawn international recognition through their musicianship, which is unrivaled in the genre. A nine-piece band featuring swirling horns and keyboards, multiple percussionists, thundering b3 organ and bass, and a trio of lead and harmony vocalists, Groundation covers all bases with their wide ranging sound. Their live shows are renowned for over the top improvisational energy and positivity and their progressive sound is catching on, having played in 35+ countries on four continents in just the last few years, including headlining slots at major multi-genre festivals the world over.

These are not lame imitators attempting to replicate Bob's music. Groundation uses the template of Marley's music and liberally adds their own colors of the sonic palate creating altogether new and unique versions of timeless tracks. Groundation is the biggest, most respected American Reggae band in the world today and their tribute to the King of Reggae music is unlike any others. Come join us and find out why...

Marshall Ford Swing Band To Release Debut Album

Marshall Ford Swing Band — the “young and refreshing” Austin five-piece whose vocals, piano, guitars, bass and beat combine for a swing sound that sometimes goes country and sometimes scatters some jazz — releases its first studio album, the bright and buoyant IT’S ABOUT DAM TIME, on February 16 with CD release shows across the state.

Marshall Ford Swing Band members — Emily Ann Gimble (vocals and piano), Greg Harkins (guitar and vocals), Jeremy Wheeless (guitar), James Gwyn (drums) and Kristopher Wade (upright bass) — give it their all, onstage and now in the studio.

Word of mouth in Austin music circles and gigs in some of the city’s most popular restaurants and other venues, as well as time at the fiddle camp of legend Johnny Gimble (yes, Emily’s grandfather), have pushed the band’s evolution from its traditional country start to one embracing Western swing and its most engaging elements: retro shout vocals, twin guitar leads (by Harkins and Wheeless), an animated piano, and lyrics simple and straightforward.
Like the album, the band’s shows are full of up-tempo old-time swing tunes that band members love and love to play and country- and jazz-infused originals — all of which set toes to tapping and couples to dancing.
“This group’s tunes are reminiscent of the early days of swing music, where the bass kept the beat and the mandolin was a prominent fixture,” said the Austin American-Statesman.
Marshall Ford Swing Band upcoming shows include:
February 14, Sengelmann Hall, Schulenberg*
February 18, Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton*
February 19, The All Good Café, Dallas*
February 20, Saxon Pub, Austin*
February 26, Poodie’s Hilltop Bar & Grill, Spicewood
February 27, Dosey Doe, The Woodlands*
March 6, Auslander Biergarten, Fredericksburg*
March 8, Sam’s Burger Joint, San Antonio*
March 11, The Continental Club, Austin
March 26, Camp Street Café, Crockett
April 9, Central Market North, Austin
May 29, The Cain Center, Athens, Texas

The Motet perform "The Best of Halloween"

We are very excited to announce that on January 22nd and 23rd The Motet will be performing "The Best of Halloween" at CERVANTES' MASTERPIECE BALLROOM'S Grand Re-Opening 7th Anniversary Party. For these shows we will be featuring the fantastic vocalist JEN DURKIN (Deep Bannana Blackout, Mickey Hart Band, Bernie Worell Band) and the slamming east coast horn duo of Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis (Soulive, Lettuce), aka "THE SHADY HORNS".  Get ready for these guys to blow the roof off the joint!  We are also extremely excited about the virtuosic guitarist DAN LEBOWITZ (ALO, magicgravy) coming in from San Francisco to join us for these two epic nights of great music!

And as this is somewhat of a reunion gig for us, don't be surprised to see our old friend and guitarist Ryan Jalbert (Brett Dennen Band) up there rocking out. Also, flying in direct from Portland Oregon will be vocalist exraordinaire Jans Ingber. And, per usual, we will have Motet regulars: Garrett Sayers on bass, Joey Porter on keys, Dave Watts on drums, Scott Messersmith on percussion, Gabe Mervine on trumpet, Kim Dawson on vocals, Matt Pitts on bari, and perhaps a few others yet to be named...

Yes folks! You heard it right, this will be a 13 member band including a four piece horn section, three vocalists, two guitars, and percussion. The concept, of course, will be for us to perform music by the artists of our past Halloween shows: Talking Heads, Tower of Power, Jamiroquai, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, and Herbie Hancock. This is going to be a once in a lifetime band, so please get your tickets soon.

Now as a added bonus, MAGICGRAVY, the ever exciting trio of Dave, Dan, and Garrett will be opening both nights! Be ready for some mad-improv-soul-jazz insanity to warm your body up...

This will also be the grand re-opening of Cervantes. They are putting a lot energy into upgrading the P.A., the stage, the restrooms and overall appearance. So, please come support one of the best live music venues in America!!

Dark Star Orchestra @ Boulder Theater

DSO sing entire shows from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates the original song for song performance set list for an entirely new generation of, as well as old school, Deadheads. Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of nearly 1500 shows since forming, the band's determined commitment to "raising the Dead" has drawn national media attention.

Precision is king with DSO; the band adapts their stage positioning, vocal arrangements, specific musical equipment and instruments to fit the era of the show they are performing. Following each performance the band announces the date and venue of the original performance. Dark Star Orchestra could dip into any incarnation of the dead at any of their shows, allowing fans to experienceˇ shows that happened long before they were born.

The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker Announce New Years Shows

The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker today announce a very special New Year's run with indie rockers Band of Horses; two shows at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia on December 30 and 31.

Fresh off an epic European tour in support of their brand new studio album Burn It Down (released September 2009/Outta Sight Records), The Dynamites are living proof that soul music is here to stay.  With "deep grooved, superbad brashness" (Las Vegas City Life), Nashville's white-hot deep funk band are cooking up a "genuine soul revival" (Blurt Magazine) in even the most underground hipster circles.

The Dynamites will support Band of Horses for a scorching southern New Year's celebration.  Show details are as follows:

New Year's with Band of Horses and The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker
Wednesday, December 30 and Thursday, December 31 @ 9 PM
The Tabernacle

152 Luckie Street NW, Atlanta
All Ages Welcome

For tickets and information visit www.tabernacleatl.com or call (404) 659-9022

For their 2nd LP, The Dynamites and their soul-shouting frontman Charles Walker deliver a slate of tunes that arrives right on time. It's a new day, and Charles Walker and his band have something to say. It's the kind of story where you gotta tear it down to rebuild it, the greedy man ultimately gets his due, love rules the day and everybody gets down in the end.  It's a timeless tale, as relevant as ever, and Burn It Down tells it in a righteously funky fashion. Strike a match, light the fuse and Burn It Down.

The release of Burn It Down marks the highly anticipated follow-up to Charles Walker & The Dynamites' first LP, Kaboom.  As the New York Times hailed:

"New York City has the Dap-Kings, Nashville has the Dynamites, whose approach is about three quarters James Brown with touches of Memphis, Motown and New Orleans. [And] The Dynamites have found a singer to put them across: Charles Walker, who has been on the soul circuit since the 1960s. His voice rivals better-known headliners; he's an authoritative, gospel-steeped shouter and a dramatic ballad builder. It's old-school music that works up a genuine sweat."

Charles Walker
doesn't imitate, emulate or try to resuscitate a bygone nostalgic era.  He is soul, the real deal, still carrying the flaming torch of funk and soul lit back in the late 60's at the Apollo Theater where he opened up for icons like James Brown and Wilson Pickett.  What's more, the fresh songwriting approach of Bill Elder, a.k.a. Leo Black, continues to push the deep funk envelope, propelling Walker to sound equally at home singing a scorching hot, up-tempo rocker as he does on a heart wrenching 60's-style soul ballad.

An essential authenticity comes across in The Dynamites music and message. Without a doubt, Burn it Down acknowledges that not all is right in the world, but it doesn't get stuck there. Times might be rough and people might be grumbling about doomsday, but Charles Walker and The Dynamites are here to remind us that "it's a sunny day." Sure we could bitch and moan. But we could just as well get down to some funky assed grooves and burn that negativity down.

The Dynamites are: Charles Walker (vocals), Bill Elder, a.k.a. Leo Black (guitar), Chris West (saxophones and flute), Jon-Paul Frappier (trumpet), Charles Treadway and Tyrone Dickerson (organ), Chris Patterson (percussion), Derrek Phillips (drums), Jonathan Jackson (saxophone) and Rich Brinsfield (bass).

From Good Homes Reunite for Two Shows - Dec 18 and 19

The members of From Good Homes have announced today that the band will reunite for a weekend of special shows- their first in 10 years.  The shows, scheduled for December 18th & 19th at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ will mark the first time the band has performed together since the band's legendary "farewell show" in August 1999.

The genesis of From Good Homes dates back to a high school band, when childhood friends Todd Sheaffer, Brady Rymer, and Patrick Fitzsimmons came together in rural, Northwestern New Jersey.  Originally called "Old Crow", and later evolving into "The Dogs", the core line-up remained.  With the addition of Dan Myers in 1988, and Jamie Coan in 1990, the band From Good Homes was fully formed.  The band's upbeat approach, solid songwriting, and unique sound allowed them to quickly develop a dedicated following on the touring circuit. Bringing together rock, jazz, folk, celtic and jam-band influences under one umbrella, rooted in Todd Sheaffer's inspired songwriting, From Good Homes forged their own, instantly lovable music. Their unique style prompted one critic to affectionately label the band's blend of influences as "Hick-Pop".

From Good Homes released 5 albums during their career- 3 on RCA Records- and performed over 1,500 shows across North America, including two tours with Dave Matthews Band and shows with Bob Dylan, Ratdog featuring Bob Weir, Widespread Panic, Hootie & The Blowfish, Blues Traveler and many more.  In 1998, From Good Homes received an achievement award from Billboard Magazine and Irving Plaza for the most consecutive sold-out performances ever (12) at the New York City venue.

After disbanding in 1999, band members went on to embark on individual projects.  Todd Sheaffer formed the bluegrass-influenced Railroad Earth, which has released 5 records and continues to sell-out shows throughout North America.  After starting a family of his own, Brady Rymer began a career making music for children and families; his most recent release "Here Comes Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could" was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award in the Best Musical Album for Children category.  Drummer Patrick Fitzsimmons has had a very successful run as a singer/songwriter, releasing 5 records independently and touring regularly in the Northeast.  Saxophonist Dan Myers runs a production company, Dirt Floor Studio, and has worked on records with Adam Green, Sam Champion, as well as with Rymer and Fitzsimmons.  He also appeared as a guest soloist on "Live Trax Vol. 16" the latest live release from Dave Matthews Band.  Multi-instrumentalist Jamie Coan continues to write, perform and record and currently plays fiddle and Dobro with The Red Top Ramblers in the Charleston, SC area.

"It'll be great to get back on stage with the guys and play again" says lead singer Todd Sheaffer.  "It's been a long time since the From Good Homes family was together and I know this is going to be a whole lot of fun".

Tickets for the shows are $28 in advance and $33 on the day of show.  They are on sale now through Tickets.com.  All information is available at www.wellmonttheatre.com and www.fromgoodhomes.com.

From Good Homes is:

Todd Sheaffer - lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Brady Rymer - bass, vocals
Patrick Fitzsimmons - drums
Dan Myers - saxophones, melodica, vocals
Jamie Coan - acoustic guitar, violin, mandolin, vocals
