Rex Foundation: New Grants, Upcoming Events & More

support the Rex Foundation- for the Grateful Web

The Rex Foundation recently distributed $72,500 in grants, including the 2008 Jerry Garcia, Bill Graham and Ralph J. Gleason Awards.  With these, we have now donated over $1 million since December 1, 2001, the launch of the Rex Foundation's renewal in the absence of direct Grateful Dead concert funding.  In this 25th Anniversary year, let's celebrate the $8.4 million grants to over 1,000 grassroots programs, reflecting our collective power to keep furthering what the Grateful Dead started!

With all the current financial tumult, now is the time for Rex's philanthropic community to show its strength.  Please join Rex at their upcoming benefit concerts to connect with kindred spirits and enjoy great music.  Help Rex continue supporting grassroots programs that are doing the vital work toward a healthy environment with thriving communities:

Saturday, November 29th, a Black Tie-Dye Ball with Dark Star Orchestra at the Nokia in New York City.  Enjoy a pre-concert party, mingling with the musicians, great concert seating and premium balcony access.  Click here for details.  Help us celebrate the month-long DSO Rex Caravan Tour on the East Coast, where $1 of every ticket sold is contributed to the Rex Foundation.

Saturday, December 13th, our 25th Anniversary Black Tie-Dye Ball at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.  Save the date for this very special evening of music.  Details will follow soon.

Read their just-published newsletter Perspectives on The World As It Could Be to gain new insights and inspiration about how we can, individually and collectively, visualize and move toward a global community that promotes hope and justice for all, while being economically and environmentally sustainable for generations to come.  With the imminent November 4th election, we hope the writings encourage voting and support for continuing civic engagement.

Check out the video of this year's original performance called The World As It Could Be - Where There's A Will There's A Way, created by the youth of the Destiny Arts Center Performance Troupe.  Because of the success of this performance and overall creative project, Rex is now working with Balboa High School in San Francisco to create pilot curriculum on using the creative arts to deepen the teaching of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as part of the overall The World As It Could Be Human Rights Education Project.  This is all possible because of the support of project sponsors and your generous contributions.

All that Rex is doing is captured by the Rex Community Caravan, their virtual vehicle for traveling together to connect the arts, community and grassroots philanthropy.  Your contributions and participation in their events make all the difference!  Help them celebrate.  Let's show how contributions of $5 or more add up quickly and how we can, together, further what the Grateful Dead started for another 25 years

Steve Kimock News & Upcoming Dates

photos by Phil Emma- for the Grateful Web

Two things have always driven the likes of Steve Kimock and Billy Goodman, guitars and great songs. That's what you'll find when you hear the Big Red Barn Sessions.  Ten great songs guaranteed to grow on you with every listen. Steve Kimock's masterful sonic understanding creates the atmosphere and carries the day.

What started out as a demo recording in Kimock's barn (studio) turned in to a small underground cluster of heartfelt songs and performances with a nicely old school vibe. Starting with the ballad for late guitar hero Johnny Thunders, it moves on to fingerpicking duets, twelve string guitar riffs reminiscent of the early Byrds, front porch offerings taking us back to Workingmans Dead, all the way down to the slide guitar instrumental favorite "Cowboy".

The songs are anchored by John Morgan Kimock on the drums, Captain Jim Kost on Hammond B3 and Peter Fritz playing bass. Enjoy your dinner....

You can get your hard copy of Big Red Barn Sessions HERE. Big Red Barn Sessions is also available for digital download.

Billy and Steve recently played their first duo show, warming up for their Europe tour, to a packed house at the Wildflower Cafe in Bethlehem, PA on April 5th. They played two and a half hours of originals, old blues classics and cool covers by Ry Cooder, Stones, Beatles etc with some amusing banter from Billy. Download your copy of this live show HERE.

ZERO: A Tribute to Martin Fierro will feature surviving/former members of ZERO and many special guests, all celebrating the incredible spirit and music of Martin Fierro.

Beloved jazz-rock saxophonist and our dear friend Martin "Meester" Fierro, passed away on March 13, 2008. His good humor, shining spirit and pure music will be deeply missed more than words can say.  In his honor, a memorial concert is set for 8/8/08 at the Fillmore in SF, CA.

A small allotment of pre-sale tickets for fan club through kimock.com go on sale April 16th @ 9:00AM PST through Friday, April 18th.  Public on-sale starts on 4/20 through Ticketmaster.

For those of you who wish to make contributions in Martin's memory, a trust for Jessica Fierro (Martins 8 year old daughter) has been established for her education fund. So, if you feel the urge, please donate here:

Upcoming Kan'Nal Tour Dates

photos by Amanda Bell- for the Grateful Web

Kan'Nal is an authentic Rock & Roll band. Formed through natural evolution across 4 countries, 6 years, and 10's of thousands of miles traveled. The sound is rock & roll infused with a primal tribal core. Tribal Psychedelic Rock.

The core 5 members of Kan'Nal came together over a 2 year period between 2002 - 2004. All were on solo backpacking missions though Mexico and Central America when their paths crossed. First Lead Singer/Songwriter TZOL met TIERRO (lead guitarist) in a small town in Guatemala. Cut off from the outside world, San Marco, Atitlan was the perfect spot for the two to work on their musical direction. The 1st CD was conceived and later that year delivered in a studio in Toronto Canada.

Tzol and Tierro returned to that same town in Guatemala almost 1 year later to the day and met Rodolfo (BASS) and Teresita (Performance act/vocals) soon to be core members of the growing tribe. Later that year the 4 headed to the states for a small tour and recruited Rodolfo's life time friend Gilly Gonzalez from San Antonio, TX for drums. Aaron Jerad joined up in the Yucatan Mexico as a didgeridoo.

The band was set... Traveling by foot, hitching, car, jeep, van, bus and plane, the group has now played over 500 concerts since their inception. Highlighted by performances in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala, river side in the jungle palace of Palenque Mexico and high profile rock festivals across America including SXSW, High Sierra, Wakarusa, Earthdance, Burning Man and many more.

Their talent, drive and potential was recognized by Colorado producer Dik Darnell (John Denver, Earth, Wind and Fire, Caribou records) in 2005, and his contributions helped push Kan'Nal up to the next level. New CDs were made, and bigger and better tours were taken on. That same year Akayate (performance artist, dancer and costume designer) joined the crew and the bands stage presence was now at seven performers.

Today in 2007 the band Kan'Nal has a hungry passionate fan base across 15 states. Over 10,000 CD's sold, a 6000 plus true fan mailing list, and supporters from all walks of life. The group is about to launch a new CD, a DVD, and a summer tour to back both. All 100% independent. 100% authentic. 100% true to creativity. 100% passionate for music. 100% passionate for life.

Rex is pleased to announce that Theresa Reed-Hayle is the new Associate Director of the Rex Foundation.  Theresa brings depth of experience in event and artist management, along with tremendous enthusiasm for the Rex Foundation and its legacy, all that will contribute greatly in helping Rex carry out fundraising activities and communications.

On April 14th the second performance of The World As It Could Be - Where There's A Will There's A Way takes place at Oakland Tech High School in Oakland, CA.  This original dramatization about the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the will that is needed to manifest its words, is a recent initiative of the Rex Foundation.  The performance is one of three creative arts components carried out by Rex grantees under the direction of Ellen Sebastian Chang.  As part of this effort, we're working with Balboa High School in San Francisco, once attended by Jerry Garcia, to develop pilot curriculum that utilizes the creative arts to raise awareness of the UDHR.  Read more about this special project and its generous supporters.  And, you can post your comments about public school education and other topics on the Rex Foundation blog.

Look at page 41 of the April/May 2008 Relix Magazine that's in newstands now and available on-line to see the full-page Rex Foundation 25th Anniversary thank-you to the musical community for all their support.

Check out Rex Community Connections to learn about upcoming activities of Rex beneficiaries and other community connections, in this case, recent Jerry Garcia Award winner Jazzmasters Workshop, Ambassadors of Hope & Opportunity and Wavy Gravy's special birthday.

Rex is immersed in planning summer festival participation, benefit events across the country, a new website design and more.  Rex will be sharing more news soon.

As you read the details of these various announcements, enjoy viewing the positive achievements that your support makes possible.  We are connected as kindred travelers on the bus of the Rex Community Caravan, continuing to expand our grassroots philanthropic community.  Let's make this a breakthrough 25th anniversary year, moving those grant dollars way past the $8.3 million distributed so far, demonstrating our collective power to further what the Grateful Dead started in the fall of 1983.
