Rex Foundation releases The Wheel - A Musical Celebration of Jerry Garcia

On Tuesday March 29, 2011 the Rex Foundation will release 12 tracks from The Wheel – A Musical Celebration of Jerry Garcia. Recorded at The Fillmore in San Francisco, this special live album features some of Garcia’s oldest cohorts playing some of his most well-known songs.

Hosted by the Rex Foundation at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium on December 4, 2010, the benefit concert entitled “The Wheel – A Musical Celebration of Jerry Garcia” was a historic night. Among the evening’s unique music experiences was the bringing together of Jesse McReynolds, Peter Rowan and David Nelson.

McReynolds, Rowan, and Nelson each shared a deep connection with Garcia dating back to the early 1960s. In 1962, when Jerry Garcia began playing the banjo and exploring bluegrass music, he formed a band called the Hart Valley Drifters with David Nelson on guitar. In 1964, as part of his bluegrass pilgrimage through the American South, Jerry sought out the even-then legendary bluegrass musicians “Jim and Jesse” (McReynolds). Garcia held Jesse’s mandolin playing and music in high esteem for many more years to come. In 1969, as the Grateful Dead released Aoxomoxoa, Jerry was also collaborating with other musical friends. He reconnected with David Nelson and John “Marmaduke” Dawson to form New Riders of the Purple Sage. He formed another bluegrass band, Old and in the Way, with David Grisman, John Kahn, Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements. Coming full circle, in October 2010, McReynolds released Songs of the Grateful DeadA Tribute to Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, collaborating with none other than David Nelson.

At the December 4th benefit event, the featured artists, along with members of their respective bands, which included Garrett McReynolds, Steve Thomas, Jody Stecher, Keith Little, Paul Knight, Barry Sless, Robin Sylvester, John Molo, Mookie Siegel, and special guest Matt Butler of The Everyone Orchestra, had the exceptional opportunity to play Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter and traditional American roots songs together.

Following the show many people noted that this remarkable music should be made available to those who could not attend, as well as to extend the reach of the benefit to provide additional charitable support to the Rex Foundation. On Tuesday March 29, 2011 this will be the case with downloads and CDs available from nugs.net for all to enjoy. As a special bonus, nugs.net is offering a free album listening party during the week of the release exclusively at nugs.net/wheel.

Spring into Sound at Kimock's NYC Residency

Fresh off a sold-out run in California, Steve Kimock kicks off his NYC residency at Sullivan Hall this Wednesday, March 23rd. The weekly Wednesday performance runs through April 6th and features an array of special guest performers such as New Orleans legend Henry Butler, Marco Benevento, Adam Deitch, John Molo, Pete Sears, John Morgan Kimock, with other special and surprise guests. Regarded as a true "musician's musician," Kimock has been coined, "an unknown legend" in a recent CNN piece, and a master of his craft, it's no wonder that Jerry Garcia dubbed him one of his favorite unknown guitar players.

Kimock has gone out of his way to maintain an authentic relationship with his instrument and his sound. Many focus on music specifically, not dealing with sound as the main component. For Kimock, the sound is the reason that he plays and the music is the vessel. With excitingly stunning guitar explorations coupled with melodic mastery and remarkable improvisation, Kimock's distinctive ability to elevate sonically, creates indescribable moments of transcendence for his loyal audiences.

Blending genres from rock, jazz, blues, to middle-eastern and almost everything in between, Kimock has played with some "main" bands over the years, most notably Zero, KVHW, the Other Ones, and was part of the legendary Phil & Friends lineup in '99, a few incarnations of The Steve Kimock Band and most recently the electronica outfit PRAANG. With his keen ability to step onto any stage at any time, and constantly raise the bar with all sorts of bands through a wide-range of genres, Kimock's guitar playing is the stuff of legends.

The Sullivan Hall residency will kick off promptly at 9 PM for three consecutive Wednesday night performances beginning on March 23rd and will run through April 6th -- and in typical Kimock fashion, each night will have its own flavor, sure to bring some unexpected surprises.

Tickets $20 and available at www.kimock.com and http://www.sullivanhallnyc.com.

Umphrey's McGee Hosts UMBowl II

UMPHREY’S MCGEE brings the ultimate fan experience back to Chicago with UMBowl II on April 2, 2011 at Park West. The uniquely interactive state-of-the-art intimate concert event will keep both band and fan on their toes with the audience calling all of the plays during four, 45 minute musical quarters (see full breakdown below), each with a different interactive theme. Quarter One invites the audience to choose the opening song / set list, Quarter Two will be a “Stew Art” (S2) full improvisational set, Quarter Three’s “Special Teams” is new to UMBowl this year with special band line-up changes and anything goes configurations, Quarter Four closes the show with an all request fantasy team of musical concoctions that have never been heard before.

“With UMBowl, Umphrey's McGee have furthered their forward-thinking reputation, leveraging their traditional touring, merchandise and recorded music businesses with tech-driven marketing innovation." said Syd Schwartz, CEO of Linchpin Digital who advises the group on digital marketing strategy. “UMBowl brings artist and audience closer together, creating a 'full contact' interactive music experience, continuing Umphrey's stellar track record as a DIY success story."

Tickets went on sale last week and sold out within minutes. VIP Packages are still available through CID Entertainment. Sponsors for UMBowl II include Vienna Beef, D'Agostinos Pizzeria, and Source Audio.

UMBowl II quarterly breakdown as follows…

Quarter One - The fan is the quarterback

Those in attendance will be calling the plays starting with the opening notes of this year's event. A series of choices will be presented to the audience on large projection screens throughout the venue. The fans then decide what song the band will open with. Voting will occur via text message courtesy of Mozes, and the results will be tallied in real time in front of the audience and the band. The audience will then have the chance to call an audible and dictate what's next by choosing from a wide variety of UM originals, improvisational styles and cover songs. The audience picks the plays and determines the strategy to make a killer set.

Quarter Two - Stew Art* improvisational set

The band will play a full set of improvisation based exclusively on themes, ideas, scenes, and concepts presented by fans. Entries will be submitted via text message and the best will be added to the playbook. Expect handoffs and hail marys as one musical idea is lateraled to another. The selected themes will appear before both the band and audience in real time so split second decisions will be paramount.
* Stew Art set is named after the Jimmy Stewart Ballroom in Chicago where the band recorded their first successful improv session.

Quarter Three – Special Teams

UM are thrilled to introduce the Special Teams quarter, a brand new concept for the UMBowl. Constantly evolving line-ups will keep everyone guessing as the quarter unfolds with various teams taking the field. Everything is possible – solos, duos, trios, and quartets as the band adapts to the conditions inside the stadium. You won't know who might pop up behind the drum kit or on the keyboards. Any configuration of the band may take the stage, although not likely the one you're used to.

Quarter Four – All Request

UM is looking to go out with a bang and want the audience’s help. Last year's All Request quarter was the overwhelming fan favorite and it’s back by popular demand. All ticket buyers will receive a ballot to vote for the songs they’d most like to hear. Expect everything from older, more rare choices to bizarre, alternate versions of "the hits" to curveball covers. There will also be a write in category for fans to submit their own requests. Challenge the band to rethink old favorites. Everything is fair game.

About American Legacies:

American music fans have an unprecedented opportunity to hear two masterful groups explore the common ground where bluegrass and jazz meet when the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band release their collaborative American Legacies project on April 12th via McCoury Music and Preservation Hall Recordings.  Inspired by the success of the Del McCoury’s participation on 2010’s PRESERVATION, a PHJB project made with multiple artists to benefit New Orleans’ unique Preservation Hall venue and its Music Outreach Program, the set offers a dozen songs filled with deep respect and joyful virtuosity.  Complementing the release, the two groups have announced a joint tour that will feature them performing on their own and together in a groundbreaking concert experience.

American Legaciesis a no-holds-barred tour of songs and sounds that sum up the simultaneous (and often intersecting) histories of two distinctively American musical forms—the jazz that has drawn music lovers from around the world to New Orleans for more than a century, and the “hillbilly jazz” of bluegrass, created more than 60 years ago by Del McCoury’s one-time employer, Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys.

2010 was a remarkable year for The String Cheese Incident, with more than 15 years of touring under their belt the band entered a new phase where select events and special destinations took the place of long stretches on the road. This new touring model was highlighted by sold out stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Horning’s Hideout, and monstrous “Hulaween” Incidents at Hampton Coliseum. 2010 also found SCI launching the acclaimed classic archival series Rhythm of the Road, which kicked-off with the legendary Vol 1: Incident in Atlanta - 11.17.00 show from Atlanta, GA.

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under is her latest offering as a solo artist. A collection of live and studio tracks with an Antipodean theme, the album berates a lover for his love of vegemite and celebrates a lady’s nether regions with the new single “Map of Tasmania” which you can download HERE.  All materialfor this album was lovingly penned for and recorded in Australia and New Zealand. It includes some special tributes in the form of covers of Nick Cave and New Zealand’s Peter Jefferies.

Having just struggled to be release from her major label contract, Amanda has been trailblazing in Internet and creative distribution with an effective new model for distribution of music. Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under will be available exclusively for her Down Under fans as a physical release through Liberator. However, true to Amanda’s unique and successful music model, fans will be able to choose their contribution for download, packages and once in a lifetime experiences.  As with her latest release Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukulele, check out her website for package details.

“This whole record is a love letter to Australia and New Zealand,“ Amanda says flirting wildly with her southern neighbors. Amanda has made no secret of the fact that she’d love to relocate to her “second home” in Melbourne during the New York winter and keep her summer home in the Big Apple the rest of the time. “I have a special relationship with the Australian people. It was the first continent where Dresden Dolls landed and it was Beatlemania. I have a huge resonance with the place and the people. Plus I hate being cold,” she says.

Anyone who’s ever seen or heard Palmer – whether raising eyebrows as the gender-bending “emcee” in the prestigious American Repertoire Theatre’s production of the musical ‘Cabaret’, delivering dramatically direct, wildly theatrical performances as one half of the cabaret-punk duo The Dresden Dolls or, most recently, as a solo artist whose uncompromising vision has frequently made her a flashpoint for both admiration and controversy – will attest to the fact that being a musician and rock star is not merely a job, and never has been.

Instead, Palmer is her art. And, in turn, her art is an extension of who she is, and is always becoming: a voracious seeker of creative catharsis and emotional release, a bold participant in games of truth or dare (she always opts for both) on a life-sized stage and above all, an utterly un-categorize-able work-in-progress. She’s a fearless singer, songwriter and an audaciously expressive pianist who simultaneously embraces – and explodes – traditional frameworks of composition.

Palmer has collaborated with indie-pop pianist Ben Folds (who produced her most recent solo work Who Killed Amanda Palmer) and teamed with acclaimed author Neil Gaiman for a storybook of photography that beautifully expands the conceptual and narrative ideas outlined in her ambitious solo album.

Amanda Palmer Goes Down Undercoincides with the Opera House “Australia Day Spectacular” with Amanda inviting special guests husband Neil Gaiman, cabaret darling Meow Meow and Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentleman to join her on this January 26th celebration.

Amanda Palmer will also be touring January & February taking in the MONO FOMA festival in Tasmania as a special guest of curator Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes. She will also be reprising her much lauded performance at the Forum Theatre in Melbourne.  She will bring the spectacular to the Adelaide Fringe in early March.

Amanda Palmer brings her special brand of humor to Australia w/ headline performances across the country.

Over the Rhine Announces CD & Tour Dates

Over the Rhine is ready to make waves in 2011 with a new release and spring tour dates that will take them to theaters throughout the Midwest and the East Coast. The Long Surrender, the new studio album from the southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Karin Bergquist, is something rare and wondrous — an intimate epic.

The record, to be released February 8, 2011 on OtR’s own Great Speckled Dog label (named for the couple’s Great Dane, Elroy), marks 20 years since their 1991 debut. It’s the bountiful result of a collaboration between the couple and producer Joe Henry, whose songs they’ve long admired.

“Joe has been quietly making records (well not that quietly, he has won at least two Grammys) that don’t sound like other records bring made,” says Detweiler. “They are a little bit dark and cinematic and funky and unpredictable. It seems like he loves to help performers who have already covered a lot of miles — Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, Loudon Wainwright III, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Mose Allison, Allen Toussaint — rediscover the soul of what they do in a new light.” The Long Surrender was recorded at Henry’s Garfield House studio in South Pasadena, Calif.

The band recently previewed The Long Surrender over a series of tour dates last fall, culminating in a weekend long December trifecta of hometown shows in Cincinnati. Performances included the Holiday Homecoming Show, their annual (15 years and counting) Christmas show at the 2,400 seat Taft Theatre; The Christmas Soiree, an intimate Sunday afternoon gathering featuring an acoustic performance, poetry reading, and Q&A with Karin and Linford; and The Long Surrender Premiere, a very special live start-to-finish performance of the album for the donors who made the fan funded record possible.

Earlier that month in Los Angeles, the band was joined onstage at the Troubadour by Joe Henry and Lucinda Williams (and supporting artist Lucy Wainwright Roche, whose special guest was her father, Loudon Wainwright III).

Over the Rhine promises to bring their smoldering live performances to every corner of the globe in 2011 . . . and here is the first round dates:
