B.B. King at the Boulder Theater - Jan. 22nd

Since the 1950’s, there has been only one King of the Blues – Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King.  Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940’s, he has released over 50 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live At The Regal,” and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together For The First Time.” In 2008, B.B. King released his Grammy winning “One Kind Favor” featuring one of his personal favorites, “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” with Lemon Jefferson.

B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound.  His singing is richly melodic, both vocally and in the “singing” that comes from his guitar.  In B.B.’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille.”

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Mississippi outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola.  He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night.  With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career.  Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competitive musical community where virtually every black musical style was heard.

Guitarist Mike Keneally + Drummer Marco Minnemann = Evidence of Humanity

One bright morning, world-renowned drummer Marco Minnemann (Eddie Jobson's UZ, Nina Hagen, Necrophagist, Paul Gilbert, David Torn and countless others) settled down behind the DW kit in his secluded hideaway, punched the record button, and proceeded to pound out an astounding 52-minute improvised solo. When it was finished, he christened it Normalizer 2 and offered it as a sort of gift to a handful of his favorite guitarists, hoping that they would each add their own signature madness to the mix.

Multi-instrumentalist Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Dethklok, Joe Satriani and, again, countless others) was someone Marco hoped would dig the idea. In the throes of recording his intense and complex Scambot 1 album (released last year on Exowax), Mike leapt at Marco's offer-- the creation of Evidence of Humanity would be a joyous, freewheeling counterpoint to his meticulous work on Scambot. "A fun ride," Mike would recall.

Frequently, while recording his parts, Mike would respond improvisationally to a section of Marco's drum solo, recording a melodic statement on guitar, keyboard or bass, and then overdubbing orchestrational support to the original improvised part. On other sections, Mike would compose movement strenuously in unison with Marco's initial improvised outburst.

The ecstatic result is something like two of the world's foremost musicians improvising together, but not at the same time. It's a record unlike any other that Mike has recorded (but probably closest to Nonkertompf, his indefinable, mostly instrumental 1999 solo extravaganza). Evidence of Humanity seems to have a life of its own, mutating and maturing with each listen.

Accompanying the Evidence of Humanity CD is a DVD, containing a tasty reimagining of the original concept. This time, Mike and Marco got together in real time and vaulted into the ether for another 52-minute musical improvisation, a feat that was videotaped for your pleasure and entitled Elements Of A Manatee. The DVD also includes an insightful conversation between the two kindred musical spirits, shot in the back seat of a car hurtling toward the Southern California desert's dilapidated Salton Sea.

Colin Stetson Announces US Dates w/ Arcade Fire

Colin Stetson has performed the solo saxophone music of New History Warfare in practically every type of venue that music inhabits, and although this music may seem challenging on it's surface, every audience in every room in every city has received it with a warm and energized embrace.

From chanting and clapping crowds of rock fans while opening up for the Arcade Fire in a string of Get out the Vote rallies for the Obama Campaign last summer to a captivated and curious standing room only in rural Germany. The monks at the National Shrine of St. Francis Assissi were so thrilled with an easter sunday performance that they had him back for two more in the years to come. It is a spectacle of physical extremes (Lexy Benaim of the Harlem Shakes likened it to watching the Olympics, and Alex Green at Caught in the Carousel calls him "the Roger Federer of avant-garde instrumental music") and an intense and cathartic experience of sound and lyricism.

Both sonically vast and melodically accessible. Allmusic.com's Sean Westergard had this to say: "Colin Stetson is an absolute master of the saxophone...New History Warfare, Vol. 1 is a truly impressive, fully formed, and highly individual musical statement... Stetson's compositions and ability to tell a musical story are what make this a great album. You haven't heard saxophone music quite like this".

Aside from his work as a soloist, Stetson has brought his unique voice on winds and brass to stage and studio with dozens of artists, including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Fiest, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Marc Ribot, David Byrne, Jolie Holland, Sinead O'Connor, LCD Soundsystem, My Brightest Diamond, Angelique Kidjo, Anthony Braxton, and The National.

Marking the 15th Anniversary of his passing and as a way to honor Jerry Garcia's musical and community legacy, Kimock contributed a live performance of a Jerry Garcia song to Jerry Jams for Rex which will benefit the Rex Foundation.

Available now at Livedownloads.com, Jerry Jams for Rex includes Kimock's performance of Stella Blue from 12/18/09, along with four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident and Keller Williams & The Keels. Other artists featured on the 12-track compilation include The Black Crowes, Yonder Mountain String Band and more. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation, the Grateful Dead's charitable arm.

The Dresden Dolls Announce First Tour in 3 Years

After a long hiatus, The Dresden Dolls are thrilled to announce their first live tour in 3 years! The pioneering and influential "punk cabaret" duo comprised of Amanda Palmer (piano, vocals) and Brian Viglione (drums, guitar, bass) will be kicking off a few weeks of dates starting on Halloween at Irving Plaza in NYC. The date marks the exact 10th anniversary of the birth of the band (Viglione met Palmer on Halloween night of 2000, at an art/salon party at Palmer's house, at which she was playing her solo songs on piano.) "Amanda's songwriting was so brilliant and raw, I couldn't have designed a more perfectly suited counterpart. I knew then I'd found my musical accomplice.", says Viglione. They will also make a stop in New Orleans for a special gulf oil spill relief-benefit for BTNEP, an organization that is working to preserve, protect, and restore the Barataria and Terrebonne estuaries of Louisiana.

Since The Dolls' last performance (which was at Rock The Vote in DC on the Inauguration Day of President Obama), Palmer has been tirelessly busy building her solo career and online empire, centered around the 2008 release of her Ben Folds-Produced solo album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer". The album was accompanied by a hardback-book of the same name and included a collection of dead photographs of Palmer and short stores by author Neil Gaiman (to whom Palmer recently became engaged). Palmer also recently released a donation-based Radiohead covers ukulele EP titled "Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele", setting the tech community abuzz about how a donation-based model can earn a mid-level artist a living wage.  Before they embark on tour, Palmer will be starring as the Emcee in the American Repertory Theater’s production of Kander & Ebb's dark weimar musical "Cabaret". Meanwhile, drummer/producer and talented musical jack-of-all-trades Brian Viglione has appeared on 30 albums since 2008, most notably, Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I–IV". Viglione's latest hard-hitting album, "Face Of The Sun", which he produced and co-wrote, is available digitally via Bandcamp and will be featured on his new website , www.brianviglione.com. Amidst the busy recording and teaching schedule, he's toured internationally with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz Nicolay, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Martin Bisi, Botanica, and The Cliks.  "A great strength of the band has always been that we've always given each other time to explore creative areas outside The Dresden Dolls, then bring what we've learned back to the table. Our love for the music and playing together is mirrored by the continual support of our fans, and we're more than ready to deliver the goods to them."

The current wave of theatrical artists are citing The Dolls and their flamboyant emotional and theatrical antics as an inspiration, from up-and-coming theatrical-pop artist and Dolls’ fan Marina & The Diamonds to Lady Gaga (who lists The Dresden Dolls as an influence on her MySpace).

"It's been really inspiring to see an evolution towards theatrical freedom among indie bands over the last ten years", says Palmer. "When we were starting out in 2000, we were surrounded by the likes of The Vines and The Strokes. People often wrote us off as a gimmick because of our weird theatrical bent. Now we're surrounded by comrades...Antony, The Scissor Sisters, The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, CocoRosie, the list goes on and on. People aren't as afraid take risks onstage. It's inspiring, and I'm proud we've played our little part in the continuum of empowered freaky people."

Beats Antique Play DENVER At Ogden Theatre

Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.

Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.

The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk  road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.

David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.

Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2 major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.

All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”

In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.

Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. Here We Go Magic To Headline Bowery Ballroom

Here We Go Magic is a five-piece band made up of members Luke Temple, Kristina Lieberson, Michael Bloch, Jennifer Turner, and Peter Hale. Several of them had collaborated consistently in years prior, but the five finally came together with a single unified vision in early 2009, buoyed by the release of the self-titled Here We Go Magic album (Western Vinyl).

The band's creative momentum since has been unwavering. Together they have developed a broad array of musical material and honed an explosive live sound all their own. They spent much of 2009 on successive North American and European tours with bands such Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear, and the Walkmen, before retreating to a house near East Branch, NY to record their second full length LP.

Pigeons, out now on Secretly Canadian, was recorded to analog tape in the livingroom of a rented house in upstate New York. It represents a full-on collaborative work by a band with an uncanny musical chemistry. The album is produced by bassist Jen Turner and features thick full band arrangements by all members of Here We Go Magic. As they were immersed together in a very reactive and spontaneous creative process, most of the arrangements and textural treatments were born at the same moment as the songs themselves. Songwriter Luke Temple's evocative melodies and lyrics are thus complimented and fleshed out in completely organic ways.  Taken as a whole, Pigeons is a unique and fascinating journey from start to finish, rooted in driving repetitive rhythms, swathed in a celestial haze, and maintaining a consistent and comfortable expressive breath throughout.

First and foremost a live band by nature, Here We Go Magic will be touring almost without stop through the remainder of 2010. They have been invited to play many of the world's leading festivals, including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork Festival.

Antibalas 'Who Is This America?' Reissued by Ropeadope

Antibalas is set to have their modern day afrobeat classic, Who Is This America?, reissued by Ropeadope on August 17. While it's common for influential recordings to receive reissue treatment decades later or around specific anniversaries, Ropeadope has made the decision to bring back the Brooklyn-based collective's 2004 album just six years from its initial release for one primary reason: "The questions and powerful social statements on the record are as relevant today as they were in 2004. 'Big Man' is a powerful musical essay on consumerism and the system of continued oppression that it supports, while the title track is even more poignant as our nation continues the struggle for its collective identity in the face of a changing world."

The third album to be recorded and released by Antibalas through that point in time, Who Is This America? was conceived in post-September 11th New York City. As George Bush tried (and later succeeded) in holding on to his presidency, Antibalas was fueling the fires of protest with its powerful musical rhetoric. The 17-piece band simultaneously indicted politicians, ignited a musical tsunami and turned a new generation of listeners on to afrobeat for the first time. In a May 2004 review of the seven-track effort, Pitchfork declared: "Who Is This America?, which in the midst of the current trickle-up afrobeat revival, has Antibalas bringing a more galvanized and urgent righteous noise than ever before, and proving they lead the pack when it comes to the re-imagining and recreating of Fela's archetypal art-form."

Who Is This America? will be reissued on CD with a previously unreleased track produced by Scott Harding entitled "Money Talks." The iTunes version of the reissue will include the exclusive cut, "Paz." Additionally, a special limited edition package featuring the CD, the album download and a reprint of the original Ropeadope "Running Man" t-shirt will be sold at both Antibalas' and Ropeadope's websites.

Formed in Brooklyn circa 1998, Antibalas has shared its dynamic afrobeat and funk sound with 35 countries and over 1000 performances. From humble beginnings at Brooklyn block parties and community benefits, Antibalas has since been featured at prestigious festivals including Coachella, Glastonbury, Montreux, Newport Jazz, and at venues from Riker's Island to Carnegie Hall. Drawing on musical lineages steeped in jazz, funk, Afro‐Caribbean and West African music, the collective is widely recognized for its mastery of and innovation in the afrobeat musical form created in the early 1970s by Nigerian composer/activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Members of Antibalas teamed up with the Dap‐Kings to create the grooves for Amy Winehouse's multi‐platinum Back to Black and continue to work with producer Mark Ronson. The horn section is featured prominently on albums by TV On The Radio and Medeski, Martin & Wood, while winning a Grammy Award for their work on Angelique Kidjo's Djin Djin. Most recently, members of the collective were at the heart of the Tony Award-nominated musical FELA! Born from a series of workshops with director/choreographer Bill T. Jones in late 2006, Antibalas' musicians Aaron Johnson (musical director), Jordan McLean (assistant musical director) and Stuart Bogie helped create what associate producer Questlove called, "the most uncut funk production ever!" After a triumphant Off‐Broadway run, the show opened on Broadway in November 2009 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.

BoomBox NEW Album "downriverelectric" out NOW

Once again, the otherwise understated area of Muscle Shoals, Alabama finds itself in the limelight. Recognized for inspiring legendary recordings from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones and The Allman Brothers, Muscle Shoals has played host to some of the most creative music in popular culture. The town is so legendary that even current platinum selling artists such as The Black Keys have recently have made it a point to record recent releases there.  This leaves no doubt that a musical revival is imminent and the locally bred electronic duo BoomBox is leading the charge.

BoomBox was born in Muscle Shoals, AL. Not just figuratively, but literally. The duo grew up just a few short blocks from the famous “Muscle Shoals Sound Studio” where legend claims the most famous recordings in history have been inspired. As luck would have it, the two met in 2004 during a recording session, and haven’t looked back since. In recent years, BoomBox, in addition to the likes of the Drive By Truckers, have become one of a few acts that are being recognized for their unique take on “the Shoal’s” musical history.

Featuring Producer/Engineer/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/Vocalist/Instrumentalist Zion Rock Godchaux, BoomBox draws their inspiration from the roots of the region including elements of Motown, Folk and Vintage Rock while infusing modern elements of IDM, Disco and Funky House. Add layers of raw guitar riffs, catchy songwriting and signature psychedelia poetry lyrics and the result is like nothing else on the scene today.

As thousands of units of their debut release Visions of Backbeat continue to move and tracks like Stereo hit dancefloors worldwide, BoomBox releases their sophomore album, downriverelectric on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

While many electronic acts typically record within digital production formats, it happens the very same organic setting that was the impetus in the create the movement of BoomBox ultimately became the final inspirations for the completion of downriverelectric. Through tapping some of the same vintage gear of their Muscle Shoal predecessors, the duo pays respect to the musical memoirs of Muscle Shoals’ as well as the rhythms of the Tennessee River with a different, yet familiar, flavor.

From new cuts such as Dungeons and Watergun to live favorites Headchange and Mr. Boogieman, downriverelectric deliberately weaves a variety of dance frenzy beats filled with catchy songwriting and soul shuttering lowend.  While the album took a bit longer than expected, the final product foretells yet another groundbreaking release from the area worth recognition.  What’s yet to come from the Muscle Shoals music scene is hard to tell, but one thing is for certain, with acts like BoomBox infusing the rich lore of the area into their current sound, history is guaranteed to repeat itself.
