Dark Star Orchestra confirms '10 New Year’s Eve

Closing in on the 1900 show mark, Dark Star Orchestra has confirmed plans to ring in 2011 with a New Year’s Run including Penn’s Peak in Northeast PA December 28, and celebrating New Year’s Eve with a pair of shows December 30, 31 at The Klein in Bridgeport, CT. Tickets go on sale today, September 29, through DSO Fan Club and will go on sale to the public on October 3.  There will also be a limited number of VIP tickets available which include reserved seating, access to a private bar, an exclusive show poster, party favors, and a champagne toast.  More information, NYE tickets and hotel packages are available here.

For the final tour of 2010, Dark Star Orchestra will offer a new twist on their Grateful Dead setlist concept. The ‘City Near You’ Tour features DSO recreating Grateful Dead setlists taken from the town or region where the show is taking place. The tour starts November 26, the day after Thanksgiving, with a pair of shows at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom; where for instance, DSO will recreate a show that originally took place in or near the Bay Area, and so on, throughout the rest of the tour that winds mostly down the West Coast and ends in Denver at the Fillmore December 11.

Additionally, the members of Dark Star Orchestra are thrilled to announce the recording and release of an original song co-written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter called “Run Mary.”  The upbeat song features combined vocals from Rob Barraco, Lisa Mackey and Rob Eaton.  Available shortly on iTunes, “Run Mary” can be heard streaming online. A free download of “Run Mary” is available when purchasing DSO tickets through its Fan Club Ticketing. As always, DSO continues to play Grateful Dead show recreations and elective setlists as its main focus.

Dark Star Orchestra @ Boulder Theater

DSO sing entire shows from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates the original song for song performance set list for an entirely new generation of, as well as old school, Deadheads. Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of nearly 1500 shows since forming, the band's determined commitment to "raising the Dead" has drawn national media attention.

Precision is king with DSO; the band adapts their stage positioning, vocal arrangements, specific musical equipment and instruments to fit the era of the show they are performing. Following each performance the band announces the date and venue of the original performance. Dark Star Orchestra could dip into any incarnation of the dead at any of their shows, allowing fans to experienceˇ shows that happened long before they were born.

Important Announcement from DSO

Thank you for joining us and being a part of this continuing, long strange trip these past 12 years. Your support and excitement for the music has kept us going strong for over 1700 shows. Throughout the years, we've had transitions both difficult and uplifting, yet the positive energy of our fan base has continued to propel our mission onward for performing this important music and for keeping this vibrant scene alive.  That said, we, as a band are entering another chapter in this story.

Dark Star Orchestra's lead guitarist and one of its founding members, John Kadlecik, has decided to resign from DSO. John's last show with us will be on Dec 5 in Buffalo. DSO is supportive of John's choice and we wish him the very best.

Dark Star Orchestra will continue to bring you this music at its highest level. In our 12 year history we have gone through three drummers, three keyboard players, three bass players and numerous rhythm guitarists and we have always managed to keep improving the sound and the experience. We will be taking on a new player with his own talents and energy and turn yet another chapter in DSO history.

Veteran guitarist Jeff Mattson, of the Zen Tricksters and currently w Donna Jean Godchaux Band, will be joining us this week, on the New Year's Run, Jam Cruise, and for our upcoming Winter Tour that begins in February. We assure you all the things you love about the Dark Star Orchestra experience will continue and we ask for your patience, friendship and positive energy as we keep truckin' on...

Our 2008 Annual Report is now available on-line.  We hope you enjoy reading through all that was accomplished in 2008 because of your support.  With care about the environment as well as costs, we'll soon be mailing the Report, though only to those supporters not receiving e-mail updates.  Let us know if you want the hard copy of the Annual Report. E-mail info@rexfoundation.org or call the office at 415-561-3134.

Check out the video recently done at the Rex office, featuring me and Rex Board members Carolyn Garcia and Nick Morgan, where we describe the positive impact of Musical Caravan events like the two described here.  Our main message is that your support, whether as direct contributers, musicians putting on Caravan events, fans at festivals and other Caravan events, adds up quickly to make it possible for Rex to provide the seed grants to non-profits doing such important work, like Good Cents for Oakland pictured here.  We crossed the $1 million in grants since beginning our renewal because of you!
