Wanda Jackson to play LP release show at ACM@UCO

The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma will kick off the 2011 spring semester Jan 28 when Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson comes to the Performance Lab for a free, release week concert celebrating her new Jack White-produced album, 'The Party Ain't Over' (out Jan 25).

It's been an unforgettable 2010 for ACM@UCO. The school hosted master classes and exclusive mentoring sessions with top artists, including Jackson Browne, the Mountain Goats and Local Natives. Many of the artists also performed concerts at the school's brand new music venue, The Performance Lab, which offers students hands-on experience in the world of live music booking, promotion, and production. Additionally, this semester's Industry Link seminar connected students with key industry figures, including high-profile managers and staff from Pitchfork, Sesac, and more.

Since its creation, The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma has generated worldwide buzz with its innovative, groundbreaking approach to music education - the first of its kind in the United States. The school, which grants a two-year associate's degree in music performance and production, is the U.S. branch of Britain's groundbreaking Academy of Contemporary Music, based in Guildford, England.

Beats Antique at the Boulder Theater

Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.

Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.

The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk  road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.


David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.


Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2  major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.

All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”

In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.

Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised.

LivePhish Limited Released Today

On Sunday June 27, 2010, Phish played their sixth headline show (since 1998) at Merriweather Post Pavilion and the second show of a two-night stand to a hot, sticky summer crowd.  Merriweather Post is a wooden-roofed music amphitheater designed by Frank Gehry with excellent acoustics and a capacity of about 19,000.  The band opened set one with "Walfredo" which includes lyrics about Phish's first visit to the venue opening for Santana in 1992.  This rarity, performed only a half dozen times and for the first time in a decade, began a string of breakouts.  The number two spot featured Bob Marley's "Mellow Mood" (played for the first time since 2003’s IT festival), "Divided Sky" and 2010's first "Tela".  A couple more covers, Clifton Chenier's Bayou swinging "My Soul" and Norman Blake's "Ginseng Sullivan", were clustered mid-set along with "Sample In A Jar."  Set one wrapped up with "Brian And Robert" - bookended by Phish classics "Bathtub Gin" and "Run Like An Antelope", the latter of which contained teases of "Brian And Robert."  Set two was a seamless affair rooted in the show's theme song, "Saw It Again" (also played at Merriweather for the first time since IT).  This playful set hinged on exploratory playing and transitions like "Meatstick" > "Saw It Again" > "Piper" > "Ghost" which, like the rest of the set included deft teases of "Saw It Again".  Phish sealed the fate of this uncommon set by weaving their debut of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" back into "Saw It Again".  The remainder of the show: "Contact", "You Enjoy Myself" (with teases of "Jumpin' Jack Flash") and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" also included multiple nods to "Saw it Again" among its sonic treasures.

On Saturday July 3, 2010, Phish returned to the Atlanta area for the first time since 2003 to begin the final two-night stand of Leg 1 of their summer tour.  Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park is a general-admission multi-purpose amphitheater with a capacity of about 12,000.  Phish had played this exact date in Atlanta eleven years ago in 1999.  The band kicked off the show with "Character Zero" and the only "Destiny Unbound" of Leg 1, followed by "Rift".  A request from the audience earned a trip to Gamehendge for "McGrupp And The Watchful Hosemasters" before a concentrated "Bathtub Gin" and the year's first "Mountains In The Mist".  The combination of "NICU" > "Gumbo" > "My Sweet One" spotlighted Page (aka "Leon") and Fish, who penned the latter two songs.  Set one concluded with "Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan",  "Strange Design”, the only "Sanity" of summer and "Run Like An Antelope" to close the set.  Set two began with an opening sequence of the The Velvet Underground's "Rock And Roll" > "Prince Caspian” (with a jam that entered "Dave's Energy Guide" territory) > "Tweezer" > "Slave To The Traffic Light".  This sublime Tweezer/Slave combination was featured on LiveBait Vol. 02.  Set two continued with "Bouncing Around The Room" > "Possum" and "Backwards Down The Number Line" > "Harry Hood" > "Loving Cup".  The Encore, "Sleeping Monkey" > "Tweezer Reprise", capped a great first performance at Alpharetta.

On Sunday July 4, 2010, Phish celebrated their second Independence Day in the Atlanta area (they played Lakewood Amphitheatre July 3 and 4, 1999).  The second show of a two-night stand and the last show of Summer Leg 1 began appropriately with an A capella performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by a return to Gamehendge for "Punch You In The Eye" > "Colonel Forbin's Ascent" > "Fly Famous Mockingbird"(narration-free except for Trey pointing out the Mockingbird).  Next came some animal songs in the form of "Camel Walk" and "Ocelot" before a three-song combination of "Heavy Things" > "My Friend, My Friend" > "Lawn Boy" after which the rowdy crowd began to chant "USA, USA."  Set one concluded with "David Bowie" and a fiery "Gotta Jibboo".  After more patriotic chanting by the crowd, Phish kicked off a mostly non-stop set two with "Down With Disease" > "Piper" > "Ghost" > "Waste" > "Julius".  "Mike's Song" > "Tela" was next and was the first and only time in nearly fifteen years that these two songs were paired this way.  After an Independence Day greeting from Trey, the band dropped into the year's only performance of "Harpua".  Trey used his holiday "Harpua" narration to educate Atlanteans and visitors alike about "the history of our country as we know it", pointing out that both the real and alternative history books in schools are full of lies.  Instead, he explained, the nation's true history is to be found within Phish's music.  This rap led perfectly into the band's first and only performance of Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name", sung by Fish with all the spirit of the holiday.  A burst of energy from the crowd acknowledged the message was received.  "Killing in The Name" returned to "Harpua" > "Weekapaug Groove", capping this unique Mike's Groove.  The instrumental "First Tube" filled the Encore slot, closing Leg 1.

National Jazz Museum in Harlem Jan. 3 - Jan. 9, 2011

The electric bass was actually Christian McBride’s first instrument. He began playing at age 8 when Jaco Pastorious was the bass guitar's standard bearer, having created masterpieces with the group Weather Report as well as his eponymously titled first solo recording. Jaco Pastorious transformed the bass guitar into an instrument of fine art, and there are few better, if any, to discuss Pastorious than McBride. This will be a night to remember - whatever you do, make it to this free class, and bring a friend.

The possessor of a unique style, this is a rare solo performance in New York City. Along the way, Eldar’s had the good fortune to work with masters such as Dr. Billy Taylor, Dave Brubeck, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, among others. The performance space is a wonderful place to hear acoustic music – no microphones, just a lot of wood to give the sound depth and warmth. This is a wonderful way to break in the New Year with live music!

Blix Street Records To Release "Simply Eva" by Eva Cassidy

She left us way too soon, in November of 1996, but Eva Cassidy's voice has continued to resonate with fans around the world since the music she left behind began to be released two years after her passing from melanoma at the age of 33.On January 25, 2011, independent Blix Street Records will release SIMPLY EVA, a collection of 12 acoustic versions of songs with which she has been associated, all previously-unheard guitar and vocal only performances.

This "Eva only" collection showcases Cassidy's extraordinary voice and superb guitar work as well as her unusual arrangements of sometimes familiar material to create a new and different listening experience for even the most devoted fans of her music. Whether it's her spare interpretation of Christine McVie's "Songbird," (which was the title cut of the initial breakthrough 1998 compilation from the Cassidy canon), the bluesy stylings of "People Get Ready" or the folk versions of "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Wade In The Water," it's Cassidy's voice that is front and center, unadorned. The new version of Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" is extended to include three additional verses that did not appear on the previously released version.

In addition to including Eva's previously unreleased, re-defining version of "San Francisco Bay Blues," SIMPLY EVA is the first album to include the Blues Alley guitar/vocal performance of "Over The Rainbow" from the Rainbow video that triggered Eva Cassidy's rise to the top of the British Pop Charts in March, 2001. Recorded five years after the 1991 version heard on SONGBIRD (which country superstar Martina McBride recently cited among her favorite recordings on the ABC News Nightline "Playlist" feature, saying "I never get tired of it"), the included fully evolved version literally redefined this all-time number one popular song (according to a BBC radio poll). Other songs include "True Colors," "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," "Time After Time," "Autumn Leaves" and Eva's a cappella performance of "I Know You By Heart."

Blix Street President Bill Straw compiled the selections for SIMPLY EVA after initially searching the archives for a possible holiday track. "In doing so," he writes in the liner notes, "I literally heard Eva for the first time, again. That I was hearing the same songs in a different way actually added to my sense of re-discovery."

A special by-product of his quest was the discovery of a Cassidy rendition of "Silent Night," which has just been made available via iTunes and other digital outlets in time for the holiday season. Recorded in 1988, Eva's performance of the traditional Christmas classic is destined to become a holiday staple for years to come. It will be included on the iTunes digital download version of SIMPLY EVA as a bonus track when the album becomes available.

Born in Washington, DC, Eva Cassidy recorded and performed in the area for several years until her untimely death. She left behind a small, but impeccable body of recordings that have been meticulously curated and compiled by Blix Street Records with the support of her parents, Barbara and Hugh Cassidy.

In April, 1998, Blix Street posthumously released SONGBIRD, a collection chosen primarily from two other Cassidy albums, LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY and EVA BY HEART. It featured Eva's unqualified signature performance of "Over the Rainbow" as well as Sting's "Fields of Gold." Later that same year, Blix Street also released LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY and EVA BY HEART, the first national exposure for both albums, followed in May, 2000 by TIME AFTER TIME, a new compilation selected from her unreleased material.

But it was in 2001 that Eva Cassidy became an "overnight sensation" when the SONGBIRD compilation reached No.1 on the British charts. By the end of that year, the album had been certified triple-platinum in England (for sales of more than 900,000 sold) and gold in the U.S. (more than 500,000 units); the album, now six times platinum in England and platinum in the U.S., eventually hit No. 1 on Billboard's Internet Albums chart and topped the publication's Pop Catalog survey for 32 weeks. IMAGINE also hit No. 1 on the British charts in 2002 and commandeered the top slot on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. AMERICAN TUNE, another No. 1 in England in 2003, ultimately made it to No. 4 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. WONDERFUL WORLD, a compilation of tracks from all the previous albums other than SONGBIRD, came out in 2004. SOMEWHERE, a collection that included two songs co-written by Cassidy as well as impressive covers, was released in 2008.

SIMPLY EVA now joins this classic catalogue that has already sold more than eight million CDs around the world.

Albert King/Stevie Ray Vaughan on PBS

PBS has announced that the Albert King with Stevie Ray VaughanIn Session program will air as a special on its stations  throughout the month of December (check local listings). Grammy Award winning bluesman Robert Cray will serve as special fundraising host on the public television broadcasts.

In 1983, when legendary blues guitarist Albert King, then age 60, was joined by his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan, then age 29, on a Canadian sound stage for the live music TV series In Session, magic took place.  Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session is not simply a television program: it’s a summit of two master musicians. The only known recording of King and Vaughan performing together, this is the concert that blues fans in general, and Stevie Ray Vaughan fans in particular, have been waiting for.

The audio recording of the performance went on to sell more than 325,000 units from two releases: the first in 1999, the second in 2009. On November 9, 2010, Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group, released In Session as both a DVD and a deluxe DVD/CD combination.

SonicBoomers.com noted: “Both men are gone now, but rare recordings like In Session remind us of a time when blues giants still walked the earth side by side.”

"As a document of what was probably the greatest night in the musical life of SRV (Stevie Ray Vaughan), this belongs in the collection of every true fan,” said the Austin American-Statesman.  Musicologist Samuel Charters says in his new liner notes for the package, “it’s also clear, nearly 20 years later, that this was a special moment in the careers of each of the two men.  It was evident from the first choruses that they were playing for each other. And that was the best audience either of them could ever have.”

An hour and 45 minutes, approximately, was taped of the two. What will thrill viewers who are fans of the blues, players of the blues, and who adore SRV, is that the televised concert includes at least one SRV tune — “Texas Flood” — that was not included on either of the two CD releases of the session.

The innovative Canadian television series was conceived with the intention of pairing musicians who were related stylistically, but seldom had an opportunity to play together. Albert King wasn’t sure whom he’d been booked to jam with on December 6, but he recognized the young Texan immediately — not as fast-rising star Stevie Ray Vaughan, but as Little Stevie, the skinny kid who’d been coming around and eventually sitting in every time Albert passed through Austin.

Stevie idolized Albert, as did many other “modern” electric axe-men. Albert may have been overshadowed by B.B., but Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Robbie Robertson, Mick Taylor, and Joe Walsh — all of them listened to him, listened again and again, and were heavily influenced by his style.

At the time of the taping, the buzz may have been around Stevie, but Albert was clearly in charge of the music.  Earlier in the year, in May, David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” featuring Stevie at his blistering Albert King-inspired best, hit the top of the Billboard pop singles chart; in June, SRV’s debut album Texas Flood came out, and MTV put “Pride and Joy” into their rotation. He never looked back.

During their performance, Albert ruled over the proceedings like a benevolent father, retaining control while allowing his guest loads of solo space in which to display his awesome command of the electric guitar.  The interplay between the two blues masters is uncannily empathetic, and Albert’s fans will find special pleasure in hearing him play rhythm parts at such length.  Aside from SRV’s two vocals — “Pride and Joy” and “Texas Flood” — all the other tunes are from Albert’s repertoire.  Viewers have the ineffable treat of seeing Albert King perform “Born Under a Bad Sign,” his trademark blues hit, as well as “Call It Stormy Monday.”

Sadly, King and Vaughan would not share a stage together ever again. Vaughan, 31 years King’s junior, died in a helicopter crash in the fog on the way back from a concert in 1990. King outlived him by two years, dying of a heart attack in 1992. They didn’t meet often, and their careers took different paths. But we can all be grateful for that one long day in a television studio when sparks flew and this timeless performance was forever captured.

EOTO will cap off 2010 in the southeast after logging over 170 national live performances this year. The dynamic duo will conclude their 30+ day winter tour with stops in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida before landing in Colorado for their New Year's Performance at City Hall in Denver --- an event that also features some of the nation's top DJ's including Dieselboy, Liquidstranger, Heyoka, NastyNasty, Nit Grit, Freddy Todd, Rumblejunkie, Jantsen, S.P.E.C.T.R.E., and Ishe among others.

EOTO takes the free-wheeling party vibe of a DJ set to the next level by using organic instruments, innovative performance technology, and uncharted musical exploration, forging a new path in the way electronic music is produced and performed. Live drums, guitars, keys, and vocals are mixed, remixed, and sampled on the fly using cutting-edge programs. This is all done without a script, and without a net.

The project consistently brings a new level of improvisational skills to the table with a style and genre of music that is completely their own. Some may call it Dubstep or others may find their unique sound rooted in House/Breakbeat or even drum & bass --- but one thing is for sure, they experts at detonating the party thermometer.

The group features long time friends Michael Travis and Jason Hann; a duo that is known for holding down the rhythm section for a variety of internationally renowned touring bands including Youssou N'Dour, Isaac Hayes, Dr. Dre, Loreena McKinnett, SCI, and a slew of other established artists.

The soundwave of EOTO is building to epic proportions with an endless barrage of live dates around the country bringing a dance heavy party that is second to none. The February co-headline tour includes such highlights as a double bill at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore Auditorium, a Grammy eve performance at L.A. Live’s Conga Room and a very special show during Fan Appreciation Week celebrating the new Austin City Limits Live venue at Moody Theatre.

Trombone Shorty, who possesses “the presence of a rock star” (The New York Times) and has built his reputation on “blistering, bold, exuberant and cutting edge” (USA Today) live performances, has a style perfectly complemented by co-headliners Los Amigos Invisibles, who “emanate pure Groove . . . walking bass lines, percolating percussion, scratchy guitar and relentless drums of a band that knows no difference between arty fun and sensual fire” (Rolling Stone).

Both artists have developed into global touring machines, each with a high level of swagger and visibility.

Los Amigos Invisibles were originally discovered by David Byrne in a Manhattan record shop. The multi-dimensional disco funk stars signed with Luaka Bop, moved to New York City from their native Venezuela and soon established themselves in the dance music scene with their elevated grooves.  Los Amigos have appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and played major festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.  The band won their first career Latin Grammy in 2009 with an acclaimed studio album, Commercial (Nacional Records), which includes guests Dimitri From Paris and Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade. Their new EP, Not So Commercial, features B-sides and alternate versions from the group’s award-winning album’s studio sessions.

For Trombone Shorty and his six-piece touring band, Orleans Avenue, 2010 was a breakout year.  Their live performance schedule caught fire when Backatown debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart, holding the top spot for nine weeks and currently at #3 over six months later. Shorty and the band headlined concerts across North America, including a triumphant set with special guest Mystikal at Jazzfest, a rousing return to Bonnaroo, and a debut performance at the Hollywood Bowl for the Playboy Jazz Festival.  They made their Japanese debut at the acclaimed Fuji Rock Festival, followed by gigs in Rio and Sao Paolo.  After an historic performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival (and breaking the Festival’s all-time CD sales record), Shorty set off on a cross-Europe tour, highlighted by five shows in the coveted opening slot on Jeff Beck’s U.K. tour. This November Shorty and Orleans Avenue support Dave Matthews Band on tour and in December, Troy will serve as curator for the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Red Hot + New Orleans, a premiere concert event dedicated to funding AIDS research.

Trombone Shorty’s visibility quotient on national television continues at an explosive pace including recent appearances on the Late Show With David Letterman, NFL Kickoff 2010, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show, Austin City Limits, and HBO’s hit New Orleans drama Tremé. The band’s “Hurricane Season” was heard weekly on MTV’s The Real World, New Orleans as the opening title track and there is much more to come.
